Consumed Hate – Thief
Unlucky Scrub – Ranger
Metabattle builds are a good start. Not one of my toons WvW or PvE stick to what they put up. I always find a way to make it better for me depending on what I am trying to accomplish. Sometimes I make it worse but continue to tweak. Since I roam a lot my build is for 1v1 or 1vGuards and such. I have a quick note on my desktop what to do when I decide to blob fight that are minor changes but not dying is #1
There are many out there who YouTube post and share their builds as well. My Thief is built off a YouTuber and I die less and win more 1v1 than I used to. Just gotta tweak the builds to work for you.
BAH! I am an Idiot lol… I have two wireless connections at the house… I was on the guest one for some reason tht blocks everything DOH! I am in…..
pulls up chair with bowl of popcorn…..nomnomnom
Queues are ridiculous on Desolation, who aren’t even linked. They’re gonna have to try get people to organize things somehow, but there’s literally dozens of PVE players that won’t cooperate.
Cooperate? I understand your frustration. BUT everyone has the same rights to play any avenue of the game. ANET put armor out of reach for PvE’rs IMO unless they stay. Doubt that will happen. WvW’rs wanted better rewards, ascended armor (better than the RNGesus drops) better skirmishing and better fights. Be careful what you ask for…you just might get it. Truly I understand your frustration and it will soon fade hopefully when people there for what they think they can get, can’t get and leave.
eh… We’ll see
It’s a selling thing. Chance to get any item listed if you buy keys and open boxes. That Ghastly Shield skin that goes for 2800G…. I got it on second ticket. Crap since then but eh I don’t buy keys.
Even when HoT was released I have never experienced the login issue I have now:
2 PCs updated and cannot login with this account or my secondary account
Both accounts on different servers
Error Code: 42:1000:7006:1232
Seems this error code is probably related to the patch and run for backpack and such
Is there a max amount of users who can be logged into ANET servers at any given time? Just curious…
Bwhahaha…I cannot even login to give an opinion. Trying now for 30 minutes… “We’re sorry…the server you are trying to reach is………” Anywho I kind of expected the login issues and queues.
Best part of that video was watching the Guard whine every time he died…lol. Don’t go to point alone against 3 and he may be alive
Good video…. gives me hope for my Reaper if I ever decide to join PvP again
Yet another thread that demeans the openness of the game. Let’s be real…the hardcore people who WvW will still WvW. Will this draw some PvE’rs… sure it will but will they stay?
Remember when PvP had lot’s of PvE’rs to farm, including me getting farmed :P ? Now the farmers complain no one is there. It’s a vicious cycle where not everyone will be happy.
Am I looking forward to the queue depth Tuesday and forward? Nope. But there is a chance that those that come play…stay…and learn their role and class. Hell I did it 5 months ago. Rank 0 to 270 +… met a lot of nice people… learned from others what to do and what not to do. Met some jerks too along the way but eh…trolls will be trolls :P Just ignore and move on.
GIVE IT A CHANCE!
Roaming is the fastest. Do not care about others, switch constantly camps, tower and sentrys, destroy dolyaks. I run from time to time in Zerg, but there is not so much progress.
I agree here. I pop in for dailies first popping boosters while roaming. While in queue I flip camps, down guards, Dolyaks and whatever will make use of my booster. Seems I can get more XP this way since it is constant and not struggling to build and getting pushed back.
For those not in the know, get your 30 min WvW boosters with laurels at the NPC if you are cheap like me and don’t want to waste gems. The gem ones are better but eh..
Then I go to zergs but the past two weeks there hasn’t been much to zerg so map to map flipping what I can and joining up with other roamers flipping what we can.
Thief and stealth go together like Ranger and pet or Necro and their risen friends…. it will never go and in most MMOs that way. Could be like WoW with perma stealth…o could be worse.
I prefer P/P and Staff and do fairly well roaming and groups. But for your choices the D/D definitely. I tried ghost and didn’t care much for it but then again I am not the best thief out there :P
How about if you keep killing the same mob without killing anything else, have diminished returns kick in? If your really not AFK you are not going to be sitting in one spot killing the same mob over and over again and if your just watching and not playing, why would you care? Sure, they could just keep moving to another spot and start on another mob, but at least they would have to be doing something.
I thought there were already diminishing returns in play:
Affected activities:
Dungeons, in which the completion rewards for an account are cut severely after the first run for each path.
Open world:
Dynamic events, in which the completion rewards are reduced for a given character after clearing or failing a total of 10 events.
Loot from enemies, in which foes tend to drop less loot of progressively lower quality, for a character remaining in the same area for long periods of time.
@Sarika …love it. Obviously chat is not watched much by GM’s or WvW would be empty from all the bans .
I meant more that defenders should read the map when considering what to do based on your calculations.
For example, during a 20 min defense, it’s often a good idea to have a couple of roamers go out to flip the camps immediately behind the attackers to limit their source of supply. Taking other camps and towers with just a handful of people won’t detract from defense by much, but it will give you points for each tick while you’re defending the keep that you wouldn’t otherwise get.
This right here! When I see a blob against blob and we are generally winning or at least holding, I like to go back and get camps or even take a couple and flip a house or two…hehe…house. Having a camp that can get the yaks flowing is better than not having at all.
Good OP though.
This Solution is needed for NA.
I don’t know the problems of EU and can’t talk about the WvW thereBut NA needs:
A seperated PPK Tier.
The Pro’s are:
1- All Guilds that only want to fight can be in 1 Place, seperated from those Casual Gamers and New Players they hate so much.
2- The old War between the 2 fractions New Players/Casual Gamers vs Ultranerds will be finally over when everyone is with the People they like only.
3- The bunch of Hardcore Players that are trying to build it’s own WvW for years can finally stop messing up everyone’s Game and have a PPK Mode only.
4- New Players can enjoy the Game again after the Hardcore Playerbase is reduced and the Campspawn and guaranteed win/lose Era comes to an End without being forced to join an empty WvW in an empty Tier for that.
6- Overall fights will be better if New players and casual Gamers are no longer mixed with Players that spend much much more time in the Game and are much better organized.
7. Natural balance will get a Chance to recover once the special Players are in their own Special PPK Tier
8. Unlike other fixing WvW Solutions, this change doesen’t cost anything and doesen’t require much Work of the Dev’s.
9. New players can play WvW the way they want without the hate, insults and exclusions they face in higher Tiers.
10. The trolling and Toxicness will get reduced outside of the Hardcore PPK Tier, making it more enjoyable for New and Casual Gamers
11- And probably the most important Point,
Arenanet doesen’t lose Money from Server Transfers to maintain their expensive Servers.Con’s:
There are no Con’s
Absolutely no Con’s
Maybe a few need a new Life-Task other than rebuilding WvW but overall
Fantastic
Win/Win/Win for Newbs, Nerds and ArenanetDetails can be easily worked out because everything needed does already exist.
1. I rarely see large guilds and even if there were enough large guilds how do you cover 24 hours?
2. Nah…people will go to each just to torment each other.
3. Just because there is a PPK tier doesn’t mean everyone will be happy but still think it’s a good idea to test.
4. New players learn from “hardcore”. How will they learn if it’s a buch of nubs running around?
5. You skipped a number.
6. You are segregating which isn’t fair. Sometimes new players enhance the mass which can overcome a blob.
7. Again you segregate “special” players. I still think it will diminish player base.
8. Dev’s can do only what they are instructed to do. Any change needs tested before release and is a lot of work.
9. Sorry but toxicity and insults will still be there because even in the new player mode people will think they are the best and well…. the insults incoming.
10. Elite will troll elite and so on. It will never go away.
11. That would have TBD.
I like your thought process and we all have what we “think” is a solution but what may be right for you or for me may not be right for the whole.
You dont want Mag, we frequently don’t have a commander and when we do its either a random tagged up and no VOIP or a guild is tagless and you arent welcome in their channels.
I guess it depends on what time of day for MAG. After midnight East Coast I have found tags are different than other times of the day. I however cannot VOIP for various reasons so when I get with a tag It’s just follow the leader. Once you run with the same tags you kind of get to know what he or she is doing so it’s not that bad.
I have played every profession and there are reasons why I do not care for some but others love them. For that reason I will only push what ones I like.
Condi Necro for ability to drop condi’s, aggro with pets and kiting. In WvW I can either roam or group with my build and do fairly well at 1v1 depending who I am up against.
Thief for power smash and make quick of a mob. Thief in WvW for ability to roam but run and poof when necessary because my build is built for roaming and not really fighting but in a group I can sustain with the buffs I get.
Ranger plays much differently and I have really haven’t decided on which build is better. condi is a little too fast for my fingers but power plus pet can take down mobs in a hurry. I don’t roam in WvW with it as I group for wall attacks of cannons, enemies and such. Just have to know your role and how not to die in any profession. Natural stride for the perma 33% movement is nice when mapping or need to get to the fight in WvW., Best movement speed of the game as it is traited and gives me another slot for trap or what have you.
Last for me is Mesmer. I rarely WvW and use for porting when jumps fail (hehe) and HP runs solo because every HP I can solo with the illusions doing all the dying. I don’t spend much time on her but when I do I just want to have some fun and chill. I can farm HPs in hopes of something worthy to sell.
All in all most time is spent on Necro with Thief as a close second.

The more maps we get, the less populated they will be. What the game needs is not stuff to draw us to a map, but stuff to draw NEW players to the maps.
There will always be players in every map, but often not enough for a successful one unless its was an organized group.
One of the reasons I left WoW was instead of making use of current maps so many more were introduced. Good news in GW2 is I don’t waste time flying point to point so traveling is made easier. New areas are great but once objectives are made why go back? I use only one toon to cover map progression and then just do my thing whatever that may be for the day.
ANET obviously intends to keep new maps rolling which is fine but we need some gear progression and for the record I HOPE they never increase level cap.
Back to maps… mega server has been huge for ANET in that every map has someone in it and must max out before another map is created. A great system especially for events unless you login 5 minutes before the event and get locked out
I hope we never get more gear progression. Most of my friends quit when ascended gear was introduced years ago. I’ve been trying ever since to get them to come back. Gear progression is only a means to an end and once that end is reached, people will simply stop playing. This is precisely what you said “once objectives are made why go back?”
If either further gear progression is introduced or level cap is increased, it will do far more harm than good.
No, what is needed is incentive to come back to the maps introduced. Monthlies are a good idea. Maybe what we need is a PvE reward track with a big shiny at the end.
Let me rephrase because I agree with you. As for gear progression I meant new looks for those who like to make ascended gear or the RNGesus for us that WvW. Not to the point where higher stats are needed. When I left WoW at level 90 and gear / wep progression you could crit for high 100’s of thousands and I hear 5 years later it’s over a million. I have no interest in “re-gearing” or leveling my toons any further and with the history of GW1 not increasing level caps and such I do not think we will see that here at GW2.
The focus on the game should always be end game content and I think ANET has done a fair job at it though they need to clean up and focus a little effort towards the PvP and WVW groups.
Two things:
“Jade server which was a Tier 4 and being face rolled in WvW” – Jade Quarry? This server has not been Tier 4. I’m confused by your post.
“Some of you ask you cannot transfer because of Very High population? I did, but just had to wait for non-peak time. " – Server populations are not calculated based on peak-times anymore. It is a rolling average that updates during NA daytime early in the week, which can seem like non-peak time. So people need to wait until guilds or players leave the server or stop playing WvW on it, not wait for non-peak time.
For statement 1: see above reply…my bad.
Statement 2: I did my transfer on what I would call off peak time for my time zone… Thanks for the clarification though.
I was certain 4 when I set that account up but if I am wrong I was prolly full of wine.
Needless to say current state of map (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH MATCHUP) but more of balance. It is boring when this happens
Again…can’t force WvW on people but there has to be a better way…
@Miyafuji.1340
I see your points on this. I do know it has been a loooooong while since any major changes to WvW and I can see myself getting map bored at some point.
You can’t force anyone to WvW but I think if there was focus on balancing of the servers better where there was more challenges in fights and keeping captures, well then there may be a bigger interest with current players or attract new players. There would be a strategy to break up large groups from train smashing to forcing to defend.
It’s hard when a precedent is already set….
With mega-servers being introduced way back when, I can create a new account, join any server and still pair up with others from any server and meet someone from any server at any given time.
Warning…long post
I was a native Stormbluff Isle since shortly after release. I picked wrong server and used free transfer within a few days to get to the one my son and others was on.
I started WvW 6 months ago or so (I did dailies rarely before that) and enjoyed it but guild was small and foreign (not being insulting but just difficult to understand at times). SBI held their own… good weeks bad weeks.
Speaking to a friend I had recently met; he was on Mag and said his guild was fun to run with and I should transfer. At the time, I was not as heavy into WvW as I am now and thought eh…ok. After studying up on Mag, we were a Tier 1 at the time and the spank fest was on. Now after this six months or so of WvW I have seen some things shift from server to server. One is my friend left… don’t know where he went. Guild became idle and was not as big as I was led to believe. I have found another smaller guild but they are cool to run with.
I took advantage of HoT price and started second account for no particular reason I guess other than to throw away 20 bucks but I use it to test stuff out with new toons instead of buying more slots and thus not committed to play but what I did at the time was pick Jade server which was a Tier 4 and being face rolled in WvW. It was interesting being on the other side.
Now Jade Quarry is a Tier 1 and this leads me to believe that there must have been many transfers for the hatred of Mag is out there.
SO…. The question is should servers be locked in at character creation with no hope to transfer UNLESS you do the delete all toons option? I read so much anger in posts of how this server is weak and that server is strong and this server is favored and so on, how can this all be balanced? Well I thought, maybe locking of servers. Some of you ask you cannot transfer because of Very High population? I did, but just had to wait for non-peak time. I get it that some servers will always be strong but it is only until the next guild transfer and so on. I have ideas on server matching but it is not allowed to be discussed without locking or delete of thread.
Voluntary transfers is an idea where you are rewarded but then you can lop side another server. The current reward to transfer is you pay in less gems…yeah not a good system there. How about you give gems instead? It seems I only get into WvW now when we are up against a more challenging server and competition is high. Simply face rolling everyone back to their keep gets boring.
Thought? Abuse? Laughter? :P
EDIT: Grammar and punctuation. It’s early…getting coffee

Maybe not in game tutorial for everything but again : https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page
That doesn’t suffice when you are new to the game and don’t understand basic stuff like skill facts (“combo finisher”, the fact that “allies” includes yourself, etc.), how leveling a skill/trait circle equally adds skills and traits to your character and what those do, and so on. It is all very confusing at the beginning. (Also, many of the images and description in the Wiki regarding the Hero Panel are out-dated.)
Then there is crafting that is extremely hard to grasp without explanation (and there is none in-game).
And these are only two of the many aspects that you need to understand in this game.
I was using the wiki more as a starting point. If one cannot get in-game help from others of his or her class there are other ways outside the game.
Learning rotation or finishers isn’t always easy but understanding what each skill does one can usually grasp not to use skill “A” that hits high but only after enemy is below 50% health versus skill “B” which will always hit for a certain amount unless it crits. Save “A” until needed if at all possible. Tooltips are important and often ignored.
And why I dropped out of season 6. Not that I am better than a silver but I liked PvP but loss upon loss from afk’rs on my side and no points if on their side…well pointless. Pun intended :P I see it is getting worse so not going back until somehow it gets fixed….
And be careful of so called “leaks”. I remember Someone released a whole bunch of info on HoT before public testing and there was absolutely nothing in this persons “leak” that was ever in HoT. Not even in the test beta. Oo
So yeah until something official we wait. I do imagine that mastery points will still be used though I wish they didn’t force us to do stuff we don’t want to earn the extra ones. But eh..overall it’s a good system.

If you used the level 80 boost on that Ele then put it aside and level another character to 80 without boosts.
Open up your Hero panel. Look at the achievements. Decide if you want to do any of those. Some will give Mastery points you can use at level 80.
What he or she said above.
Boosts are great but leveling and exploring will only help you learn more. Map chat has not been too toxic to new users so ask around for pointers.
GW2 wiki can offer a lot of information for each map you are in. What’s there, what to do, what to farm just all kinds of good stuffs.
Dungeons as you level will help gear, find stuff to sell and other goodies but mostly now you need a guild that is helpful as pugging seems slow anymore.
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page for the best information at your fingertips
Good Luck and Welcome to GW2
Appreciate the responses. I remembered after the post (with my son refreshing my memory) I did try HoT beta because of the Necro and Ranger skills I want to test but other than that I didn’t want to do the content twice and like the exploration aspect when it’s released. Probably will do again for just that reason.
So when a LS pops or some other future updates such as an XPAC why is there no public test servers? Or is there? I thought there was for HoT but don’t remember.
I have come to like the way GW2 is set up. No monthly fee means when work gets busy or vacation or for whatever reason I am not playing I do not feel I am wasting money or forced to feel I have to play because I piad for something.
I don’t mind paying for an X-PAC every couple years and the GEM store gets my gold when I want something and my money when I REALLY want something.
@ AngryBear
Thanks for the clarification. I sympathize with you in that yes, PvP needs work…. and to some of the posts here needs a lot of work. Because S6 was really terrible with the game fixing, smurfing or whatever name someone wants to give it… it left a bad taste in my mouth and I gave up early as there is no point to continue playing when people throw games or DC all the time. They will either fix it or they will have a new PvP crowd.
On the other hand if PvP fails…..well I was merely indicating this game is more than PvP so I do not think GW2 will fail altogether.
Thanks for being gentle in your response :P
So this is my short answer to the OP:
When you play an MMO that offers many game modes like GW, GW2, WoW and others BUT you play only one game mode, it is my belief you set yourself up for burn out or being dissatisfied with changes while others may like the changes.
Longer answer:
It has been my experience when dealing with heavy PvP players, they do not play just one game as you login, do your matches, dailies and such and move to the next game. I played S5 and some of S6 and found WvW to be more exciting and I still do my world bosses and other PvE.
So while you the OP hate on us that like this game YOU can go to the other game’s forums you mention and find the same likes and dislikes you find here. Someone always thinks the particular game they are playing is failing, no one listens to the community and so on.
GW2 is not a PvP only game and to compare to games that are PvP or arena based is unfair as there is a bigger core of people to keep happy here at GW2.
Yes, I would like to see the PvP matchmaking here get better and other improvements. Running from point to point gets boring. However when I reach that state of boredom I have other things to do in this game and though I do not think GW2 will reach the pinnacle of success many PvP or Arena games offer there will always be someone here to PvP.
I use a hybrid short-bow thief for middle line poison / bleed drops. Being able to keep swiftness up for over a minute and being able to escape and retreat when we drop too many.
Sometimes when you repair a wall you get stuck in wall…could be this?
I’ve posted before but I think thread got deleted by user or other. Tracking hackers is done in most MMO’s before ban hammer is dropped. They have to figure out and follow hacker to see what they are doing to exploit the system then close hole and ban user. However this is not always an option and they get banned but come back as another player.
In the end what do you want? Ban player who can start another account and do the same or time and patience as they develop a way to close the hole and then ban?
It is hard to watch these videos and see people cheated but you will NEVER see a post from dev or others on what they do or not do to protect the integrity of the game.
What build were you running I’m curious and what stances as well?
Ok. I did one better. I recorded a short video and uploaded where you can see the build info/gear/stances. ALSO NOTE I am 72 not 76 though I know you get boosted to 80 in WvW. Just weird setup and first run in WvW was interesting.
Interesting set up, would like to see how you play with such a build
Like I said it is completely random but I am thinking of using same stats when I hit it at 80 and see what happens. Oo. Ofc I won’t be changing my asc stats to match as that would be expensive so I will gear it with exotic and test it out.

I am at work so let me get back to you on that. I will post images in an hour or so of what I am actually running.
I have asc gear for clothies – Necro / Mesmer
Working on gear for leather – Ranger / Thief
Have a Guard full asc didn’t like Warrior so started a Rev
All share asc items so builds have to make due. So I am at 76 with Rev and last night decided to jump into WvW with weird gear setup and pick/chose build to rob camps and guards while I try to get the last two rewards for SAB chest. Then…..
WTF I faced rolled a trap guard… ok just lucky…OMG I face rolled a ranger then ele that was with him. NO WAY. Maybe just a bad run of players because literally this toon is days old (I had an 80 Rev once and rage deleted it lol :P)
Yes I did die sad to say but 3 V1 or higher. I ran with a couple of roamers after and I could not believe the damage I was doing. SO…
Am I just lucky, did Rev get better or stumbled onto a build that is well…cheesy level reward gear…a few bought items some blue trinkets mixed with others… randomly picked skills… it was interesting.
Turn off map/say chat during the event?
Good luck.
o yes i forgot it
but then again my rng have to be changed. i need more luck to play more. its more then 4 months ago i looted an expensive item.
I have had like 4 drops maybe 5 from Teq when I found out about world bosses. Got Asc in back to back days. Now I have been holding out for one more for a short bow for my thief….nothing…last night did an 8 hour WvW fest and wouldn’t you know it a weapon crate drops from one of the reward caches.
I have never received armor box from TT but I have a guildie who has outfitted a whole toon plus more on TT drops. Just random and some are luckier than others. My first set of asc armor was crafted after I realized I just wasn’t going to get geared waiting for RNGesus.
Good luck tho
The server crash I am experiencing right now. lol :P
Hi there. If you have questions, the Player Helping Player section would be better.
Basically everything you’re accustom to in WoW or other fantasy MMOs is likely different here. First, no RP or PvP only servers. PvP is a game mode and RP is “around”.
Mostly the standard MMO Trinity of Tank/DPS/Healer is de-emphasized. Some professions are better at one than other but not to the extreme you see in other MMOs (other than the Ranger elite). And tanking is a bit different here, it’s not being a hit point sponge but more about leading a target around.
You don’t split a drop or XP, each involved gets the full reward. Everyone gets a copy of a material node to harvest. The base design philosophy from ArenaNet was a player in PvE should never be worried about seeing another player. Everyone can rez a fallen player or NPC. Most healing is done by yourself on yourself.
Few skills root, combat system is about movement and attacking. Facetanking is difficult as armor doesn’t mitigate damage enough, self-healing isn’t enough and HP is low enough relative to damage being done. Surviving is about NOT being hit, not withstanding it.
Have fun.
Cheers to you mate for a very short but in depth coverage of the difference and playstyle. Couldn’t have said it better.
@OP WELCOME! Have fun.
I like the challenge of roaming or pushing back with a large group. I really just got into not too long ago and there is not much saltiness compared to other modes when in groups
I have been sitting on an 80 Thief for quite some time. I play it mainly to farm the newer areas as well as my other professions.
1. So now I have all the asc acc, amulet and rings with no stats yet.
2. I have all the asc weapons I would need (change stats if necessary)
3. Asc armor…that’s another story but I do have a chest thanks to RNGesus in WvW
4. Going to be sometime before I am able to get more armor b/c ANET likes to put shinies in the market and hence gold to gems… well you know the story.
5. Generally I do soloable dailies in WvW and usually run with a group on my Necro but would like to on Thief.
So I am at an impasse. Meta changes when ANET makes changes and I am more interested in a build that:
1. Goes easy on my aging digits but don’t wanna be a 1 button spammer
2. Something that hopefully I am not going to have to change stats or farm more acc and stuff.
Appreciate any help here. Thanks!
:P I was making some fun…bored…tired. But really if you zoom in using paint it is a typo or 400 crossed out. This is what happene when I am left alone with my mind at 6 AM
Edit…after actually rechecking that it is 480 down to 480.
400 marked down to 480?
They should see the issues in the forums.
But Anet needs to play PvP and WvW to understand. In my opinion, Anet thinks their matchmaking works, but we need to get good instead of complain.
I have been in a few WvW instances where ANET has control of certain areas and people complained about it. So they play they complain they don’t and they complain. Unless you mean to play secretly without ANET tag.
I support your cause oh wise one!
…..and yet we still play the game. Not every release or game enhancement is going to be to the liking for everyone. Take the good with the bad I suppose. When they did fractal rework I left fractals. Many more liked the change and I just went and found other things to do. Since Fractals seems to be doing well it appears it was for the best just not for me.
