Any plans on making karma viable again?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

wintermute.4096

As topic, the previous patches have been pretty clear on that you don’t want us to convert karma to gold at any rate, but currently there really is nothing valuable to spend karma on out there. Sure, there are some exotic sets you could get in orr (theoretically speaking) but if you’re decked out in exotics there is absolutely nothing else you could spend it on, besides crafting a legendary maybe, but with the other prequesites in mind, that way is not for everyone.
I would surely like to see the available selection of exotic pieces for karma being extended to other types (berserker etc.), or maybe some gem shop items made available through karma or something.

Oh, and it should really be account wide btw. There really is no reason why it shouldn’t be, it’s not like the equipment you can purchase for karma wasn’t available cheaper at the tp for most of the time anyway.

I have no idea what point you are trying to make, broken traits are broken, no matter how much you try to “make them work”. It’s not like being optimistic about the situation will suddenly make them fix themselves.

If a certain playstyle is underperforming in all areas, simply chosing another one and ignoring the issue is not going to help.

Lots of valid concerns were raised in the ranger forums for example, if only some of them got adressed because of this feedback it was worth it already.

Things supposed to be “super hard” should not be available for a very limited time once a year.

It gives people a feeling of urgency and frustration that should not have during a festival.

Period.

The thing is, it is not super hard by any stretch of the imagination. It is mildly difficult at best.

Personally, I loved the clocktower, but apparently, anet has given in to all the whining and made it so easy everyone will finish it now sooner or later.

Yes they are.

Even though their animation suggests that they are flying, they are still blocked by low obstacles (they can not attack defenders on a keep wall, or just fly down to attackers if you are defending), have to cover the full distance to melee range before attacking and travel at base land speed.

Longbow autoattack range

in Ranger

wintermute.4096

to be fair: you actually get to attack from longer range by pressing #1 repeatedly, so it’s really not much of an issue, since even pressing a button repeatedly is still better then not having to press it and dealing no damage.

What happens is that the buttons are rigged to only light up at a “true” 1200 distance to the target. However, your arrows do not suddenly vanish when they reach the 1200 mark, so you can still hit targets behind it.

That being said, elite skills are crap for most of the classes, there are some that stand out (warrior has the awesome signet, mesmer gets the 1v1 IWIN button), but for most of the classes I’d much rather have just another utility in it’s slot instead.

Name the sigil that is 30% of Grenades please

From the patch notes:

“Engineer kits now inherit the bonuses from currently equipped weapon sigils.
“Grenade” skill now does 30% less damage to balance against using sigils.
Grenade kit damage is now equal in PvP and PvE.”

Engineer Grenade Kit Changes. We didn’t want to totally take away the power of this kit, but when it is able to proc sigil abilities, it becomes very strong due to its powerful AOE nature. So we’ve toned down this kit a little due to the sigils now working on engineer kits.”

So, which sigils did your awesome playtesters use while hauling grenades at the target golems? The 5% one? No, that would be too obvious…

Maybe the aoe one, fire sigil, yes? But that would only be about one grenade’s worth of damage, and only when another grenade crits, once every 5s (or more likely, about once in 7s or something).

I don’t see it, really, enlighten me please.

edit: Meanwhile, weapon stats still do not work with kits, so we are still lacking:

+179 Power
+128 Precision
+9% Critical Damage

thanks for nothing, and please stop “fixing” engies, I don’t want to see what we have to trade for fixing weapon stats…

Can I get banned?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

wintermute.4096

Well hopefully they don’t do that because that would be really stupid. How is anyone supposed to know where the gold came from? Even if I asked and he told me it was legit gold, but it really wasn’t, how is that my fault? If that guy gave 50 people all 5 gold each, are they really going to ban all those 50 innocent accounts? If anything, they should just take the gold away.

I have never been paranoid playing a game before, but this is way over the top. I just want to play a game without having to worry about anything I do risking a ban. It’s way too big brotherish.

Calm down, nobody has been banned solely for buying gold in gw2 yet. People are just spreading this rumor, probably hoping to discourage potential gold buyers.

I’m not trying to defend gold buyers or anything, but I don’t think false information can be helpful in the debate.

Right now, it does work. Say you buy a heavy vigil chest on character A, you can log onto A and transmute the looks of the vigil chest to any unbound heavy chest armor you like, put it into the bank, and then B will be able to take it out and wear it. You will then also be able to keep transmuting said skin onto other chest items for B.

Bear in mind though, that this is probably unintended behavior, even though it does only slightly circumvent an obsolete barrier, there is no guarantee it won’t get “fixed” some time in the future.

Does Magic Find Set Helps In Farming

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

wintermute.4096

I bought some power/precision/magic find trinkets, before then I had zero magic find.

with zero magic find I was finding rares pretty often.

with 15% magic find equipped i’m getting junk.

I think magic find is bugging out in the opposite direction.

I strongly recommend avoiding magic find at this time.

I have to agree with that assessment. I did an experiment yesterday, by buffing myself to (as far as I can tell) 104% Magic Find. I found no real difference in what I received after two hours of Cursed Shore gameplay.

Either Magic Find is not well implemented, or drops really are horrifyingly restricted, or there’s a combo platter of both situations, but Magic Find doesn’t appear to really matter at all, despite assurances to the contrary. Worry more about diminishing returns, and ensure you dodge that window, than about bumping up your Magic Find totals.

Please stop calling stuff like this an “experiment”, or “proof” for droprates working one way or another.

Whether it works or not: you definitely will not see a difference in your drops just from casually glancing at it like that. To get anywhere near “proof” about whether they really work in any given area, you would have to farm it for days (or more likely months, if you are not doing it all day), all the while noting every single mob you killed, and all the loot you got/not got in the process. It would literally take thousands of mobs to tell a difference in droprates with any degree of certainty, anything else is anecdotal evidence at best.

That being said, the general consensus seems to be it works.

LFG issue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

I’m writing this as I’m waiting for yet another fractals run to fill. The setup of this dungeon is a pugging nightmare: as the spread continues to increase, it gets harder and harder to find a group of 5 that all need to run the same level.

Right now, LA basically is a glorified lobby for fotm, and it does completely fail at that. Constant, 24/7 overflow that separates players, and even if you get in, it does not even hold enough players to enable groups of all levels to fill in a reasonable amount of time.

At this point, the thing I’m asking is: how could the dev responsible for the basic mechanic design not see this coming? No guesting, no cross server-lfg, yet the rewards require players to play exactly one specific level of about >20 levels widely played.

MF shouldn’t work in dungeons, simple as that. In dungeons, it encourages you to diminish your own contribution to the group as a whole, to selfishly reap more rewards for yourself.

Essentially, it is a contribute less => get more mechanic, which is simply bad design imho. Either spread it over the group somehow or get rid of it as a whole.

Hi hornet, i got a full exotics set of Power, Vit and Toug ( AC one).
I run with exotic GS, Rifle and Longbow.
My trait line is 10/10/25/25.
And i can tell you, im a BEAST.
I can deal really BIG damage with GS, and with rifle and LG conditions damage ( i use the sigils to my conditions last 10% more ).
And i can survive SO much.
Most of time i use some banners, wich makes me and my party even stronger.

I recomend you start using a LG, amazing AOE´s damage, and he deals more damage than Rifle.

Some comments:
If you go 25 in tactics, it’s probably better to go 30 and get either shout healing or regen on banners.
Axe actually does slightly better dps then gs, longbow is usually better at range then rifle. If you try to boost condition duration, make sure you always end up at full second intervals, because damage only tics once every second. 10% condition duration does nothing for you if you end up at 6.6s bleed per rifle shot.

Basically, for a warrior there are only 2 types of gear you could want: Knight’s type (Pwr/Vit/Tuf) or Berserker (Pwr/Vit/Tuf).

What type you want depends on the role you want to fill with your warrior. Personally, I find a mix of berkerker/knight to be the most effective for me. If this is the way you chose to go, bear in mind that crit damage does not scale linearly with other stats because of the low numbers it has on each piece of gear and the way the are “rounded”. What this means is, that depending on which gear layout you chose, you can actually get different stat totals, so planning your layout ahead does have some merits.

For a great explanation, have a look at this:

“As far as gear goes, a balanced between knights and berserker is based on the below stat comparison on what you lose per 1% of crit damage (credit to Reddit – paradiselight).
The tradeoff for 1% of crit damage is equal to:

5 stat points – upgrade slot of trinkets and backpack
10 stat points- traits (not an equipment, but listed for comparison)
12 stat points – glove, shoulder and boots
12.8 stat points – 1H weapons and amulet
13.33 stat points – Earring
14 stat points – Backpack (rare version from guild armorsmith)
14.22 stat points – 2H weapons
14.4 stat points – Coat
16 stat points – Ring, helm and legging"

taken from here:
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/75020-my-final-axemace-dps-dungeon-build/

On a slightly related note:
If you want to replace it with exotics relatively soon, vigil gear is most likely not worth it. Rare gear as well as exotics are relatively cheap on the tp (~2-3g per piece for berserker exotics), or farmed easily in dungeons, so you could very well just jump from greens to exotics.

Signet builds are op at low levels due to the missing scaling, when this gets fixed eventually they’ll still be strong but not as “frontloaded” as they appear now.

Is Ascended gear better than Exotic gear for WvWvW?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

It’s 8% per stat, somebody did the numbers in another thread that it can amount up being 26% better.

That’s without us knowing if infusion affects stats too, which it could well do.

Bear in mind that the actual number will depend on the respective build as well. A flat 8% increase in stats does not directly mean a 8% increase in damage for example, since some stats work multiplicatively, and there is a baseline to consider.

For example, 1 point of power does more for your damage the higher your critchance and crit multiplier are. Likewise, Vitality does get more valuable with high Toughness (and vice versa, of course).

What is a Gear Treadmill?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

Anyway rant aside, a “gear treadmill” in an MMO is inevitable as its what these games are built around.

Inevitable you say? I’m pretty sure there’s an extremely relevant counterexample that disproves that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars

LOL man did you even play GW1? there was a very clear defined treadmill in that game, there was ways of obtaining much better gear and HEROES in my opinion actually broke the game… it may not have been as cookie cutter as “GRIND THIS RAID” until the piece you want drops from a certain boss, but for example my buddie had over 1 million gold, much better gear then me, and was way more powerful. This happened cause he had the treadmill on max speed and chose to sprint along on it, while i chose to get off lol

In GW1 they were just alot more inventive, I.E. when FoW and UW first popped up and they were insanely difficult and none one could even beat them for a while… and the gear they provided was only minimal upgrades but it felt like you accomplished something mainly because of the sheer difficulty.

Your definition of what a treadmill is seems a bit off, and what you describe does not resemble a treadmill in any way. In GW1, you could theoretically acquire a set of max-stat armor and weapons within prophecies. This very set of armor would then still be max-stat 6 years from that time, after eotn. This is what no treadmill means. The rarity, and thus, time needed to acquire said gear in prophecies is of no relevance to the treadmill discussion.

Also, FoW and UW did not have any gear upgrades at all.

I mean when he says:

“Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two”

it sounds like the are adressing an issue with the current system, that somehow they are no longer ok with having a “gap” in rewards. He makes it sound as if it was obvious that people want progression, and the question was how to do it. Personally, I’m a bit confused by this, because there never actually was a difference in rewards in the first place. Legendarys were just skins so people could show they grinded for something.

Ascended gear fills a gap that did not even exist before ascended gear, so the real question is: do we want numerical progression at all? Why introduce it now? After reading his reply, the original question is left unanswered.

I understand the agony thing, but isn’t just in the dungeon? Didn’t she also say top tier stuff will be adjusted to remain top tier? Where is the treadmill? .

P.S. Thanks Valhallen for explaining it. Like I said, first MMO. I’m not really familiar with “treadmill” and “gear grinding” lol but they’re pretty self-explanatory.

Legendary weapons will be adjusted, thats all. Under the proposed system, current exotics will eventually completely be phased out. This directly contradicts the core design principles anet themselves announced in their so called “manifesto”. They specifically marketed the abandonment of the traditional WoW-esque gear progression as a unique major selling point, beginning with gw1 and held true to it all that time through the entire life span of gw1, and openly said they would stick to it for gw2 as well.

Under these circumstances, I think it is ok to be slightly pissed now.

Baffled by Ascended items

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

  • The gem store sells cosmetic and convenience items. Presumably players who care about vanity items would be the ones that buy from the store. If gearscores become primary and cosmetics become secondary to the game—gem store loses out. Unless the store starts selling things like infusion boosters or Ascended-item-finder boosters. But this borders on being pay-to-win if infusion and Ascended items are necessary for completing Fractals.

Actually, no. If gear progression means we have to effectively replace our armor every major content update, people concerned about visuals will have to buy a full set of transmutation stones each update as well, just to keep their old looks. Now it does make sense that they did not simply go for the mechanically far superior and elegant solution of appearance slots.

wintermute.4096

Why would everyone stack cond/vit/toughness? Personally, I only need either vit OR toughness…

Because if that stat combo existed; power, precision and crit damage would be irrelevant to ANY trait build.

Care to explain why?

Personally, I was more interested in it because I thought it would be a missing pendant to the power/vit/toughness combination that already exists. You seem to imply that condition damage is vastly superior to power, and while this might be true for condition builds of course, I don’t see it replacing power, or power builds entirely. I’m not saying it isn’t there, maybe I’m just not seeing it, mind you. =)

Elite vs Utility Skills

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

And this is why Arena Net should have went with the GW1 style of Elite Skills, at least in PvE. Having a 2-3min cool down on your bar is NOT the definition of active combat…

The comparison to the way GW1 handled elite skills is quite curious actually. In GW1, elite skills often were more or less blatant copies of regular skills that were made stronger numerically/better/shorter cooldown, and often a build defining piece.

In GW2, the lowest common denominator is that they are something “different” that gets used situationally, because of arbitrarily high cooldowns. They are not factored into the usual gameplay or skill chains, and it seems this is what makes more utilities more desirable in many cases.

I think that the orr area in its current incarnation is less fun then it could be, and it seems to me that this particular, very isolated concern is shared by others as well. To alleviate the issue, I constructively suggest the orr area be torched, the main story rewritten and re-voiced by somebody mildly more articulate in english/their respective language, and lastly, I suggest that the programmers and designers responsible should be either staked, shot repeatedly and/or fired, or all of the above. Cond/Vit/Toughness, will we ever see it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

As topic, it appears lots of different stat combinations were in at some point in earlier bwes, but apparently got cut due to being underused at this stage of the game. If this really is the reason for them being changed, I would assume that them being not available might prove to be unnecessarily limiting for build diversity in pvp. I don’t know how it was handled before, but I do think simply setting your stats in dropdown menus in the hero screen aka “Primary Attribute, Secondary Attribute 1, Secondary Attribute 2” (that do not allow duplicate entries) would actually have been easier then messing around with the amulets like we do now.

Personally, I would greatly appreciate them being put back in, preferrably with a more flexible system to directly set them, but at least putting in some more combinations would probably be a viable solution as well.

Clear cut Condition/Burst weapons sets?

wintermute.4096

Although I think some of the confusion is stemming from the fact that power/crit based damage has apparently become synonymous with “burst” even though they don’t mean the same thing. You can have a burst condition build, or a sustained DPS direct damage build.

What is a burst condition build? The way I see it, burst and sustained damage are usually mutually exclusive. Power based damage can be either burst or sustained, but conditions are always inherently not “bursty”. I don’t see where burst condition does fit in there.

Elite vs Utility Skills

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: wintermute.4096

wintermute.4096

Good point. Personally, I think elites currently feel quite a bit off balance wise, especially in pve, and to a lesser degree in wvw.
Thus, I’d also welcome the ability to slot utilities in the elite slot after all, though on some classes more then others.

Warrior: In PvE, signet of rage is incredibly awesome. 50% base uptime on all of fury, swiftness and 5 stacks of might is so great, I would literally trade that for all of the other elites, on any class, even though they wouldn’t even get the passive part. It’s just that great (in pve, mind you.) Battle standard is decent for the res, and could probably be good in pvp for the stability boon alone, if it were fixed that is. I don’t see any use in rampage besides it’s cc potential, but even then it probably is the weakest of the 3. People just don’t build for something that is available only ~10% of the time. Ironically, it is very prone to cc itself, and the loss of all utilities really hurts it.

Engineer: Embarrassingly bad choices overall. There is absolutely nothing good here, neither of the elites do really work in any situation I could think of.
Supply crate is the least bad one, but that’s not saying much really. It just never really works due to numerous issues. First it’s ground targetted, meaning the 2s stun will miss more often then not in pvp, which is about it’s only use there, since people usually do not stand in range of a flame turret for extended periods of time. In pve, it does not have a niche either, it’s best use is the “free” healing turret which does not even give the initial heal, so effectively only a regeneration boon for as long as it’s up (which is not going to be long usually). Meh.
Mortar is worse then traited grenades (and your engineer does trait grenades, period) in every aspect, never even worth deploying.
Elixir X is utter garbage. A chance to randomly get one of 2 already bad elites is complete junk, I wonder who came up with that… I mean even if for whatever reason you actually wanted (which is not saying I could say why) to change to one of the forms, you still have a 50% chance to end up with the other one, which will probably just get you killed.

Portals by themselves are fine I guess, it just looks much worse then it is because of culling and the 5 target limitation of aoes. If those were gone (aoe limit waived for pvp only), portals by themselves wouldn’t be much of an issue I think.

Can you hide engineer kits?

Like anybody would be able to tell a grenade backpack from a bomb backpack…
