Thief + Rifle = Sniper

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

Hmmmm Sniper could be really cool done right.

I imagine a burst damage driven character. Most abilities are simply ways to do minor damage, dodge incoming damage and control enemies to keep them away. Then, perhpas an “aim gauge” could build up to a shot that would likely one shot the average enemy. So their normal DPS sucks, but is balanced by a huge one shot attack.

On reflection that’s a lot like the adrenaline bar though.

That said, I’d just like a new rifle character XD my love of sniping in other games kinda carries over.

LA Becomes Sylvari Internment Camp

Actually, even if not an “internment camp”, some sort of asylum for corrupted Sylvari could be fasinating.

A place where various levels of corruption in Sylvari are attempted to be dealt with. YOu could have Sylvari who volunteered for asylum, feeling the corruption coming on, trying to fight it. You could have more corrupted ones bashing around their cage trying to escape.

There could be quests and mastery of trying to find cures and helping individual patients. Lots of potential there.

Encountering Mordremoth...

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

The game will be fully playable at launch. including the mordremoth encounter. Anet doesn’t release an unfinished game and update the ending at a later date.

Lots of flaws in that theory.
Remember when WOW releases Cataclysm, with big bad Deathwing on the cover?
He wasn’t fightable until a later patch, after the expansion came out.

Not that this proves a pattern on Anet’s part, but it shows that expansion is no guarantee of any boss or dungeon being available day one.

I’d guess a roll out of Living Story updates leading up to the fight proper. Which could work just fine with the framework the expansion will provide.

IGN: Mastery system

“That we’ve really done is try to make a system that works a little bit more like what we’ve seen in console games like Metroid or Zelda where the progression systems feel a little more natural, feel a little more integrated with the environment and content and allow you to interact with the world around you,”

That’s actually a really cool take on an MMO. Instead of gear grind, it’s unlocking abilities and exploration gear to let you progress. Not bad. Could be interesting.

“Though you’ll find lots of the Mastery content in Maguuma, it’ll expand outwards so you’ll be seeing it in existing portions of the world, too. You’ll even be able to use some of them in the Fractals dungeons. "

A point that’s come up before but bears repeating. Cool that’ll work in fractals, wonder if that implies a new fractal and/or update to the existing ones.

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about “best DPS” in GW2 PVE. It’s not that kind of MMO. I’d worry about what suits your playstyle more. Do you prefer melee, ranged, AOE? How mobile do want to be? How many hits do you want to take, be more tanky or glassy?

"Suggestion" GW2 Dueling

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

I can think of no reason why there shouldn’t be dueling. I’m game for any activity we can do while hanging around between quests and farms.

Seeing randoms dueling in WOW was a fun little spectacle as you ran through an area. Seems a natural addition to PVE frankly.

toxicity of players, harassments, whisper spam, emails with words that makes this forum a kitten bomb (<not done by a filter), events getting ruined, players belittling, the list go’s on.

i am not going in to details because we already have a huge thread about this, it’s a dead horse dug deep and drowned with salt watter still being beaten by earth wurms.

Generally, refusing to add a feature because of the toxic minority is a bad argument. By that mentality, not adding text chat would be a great feature.

And now I’m somehow defending Shaemoor against an Earth Elemental.

I do gotta say, it’s is weird how much legendary models like Quip or The Dreamer clash so heavily with the general art direction of GW2.

More earthy tones with a painterly touch, and you’re rocking what looks like a gun from Care Bears. Not that other characters can’t rock that. But geez, it really doesn’t fit with the rest of the world.

Will PvE give more value to support builds?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

I do feel that the Silverwastes is showing a talent at creating situations where sheer DPS is not necessarily important,

Like, if you don’t use ample control on teragriffs, those things will destroy everything. And with the poison clouds chipping away at health, the pack bull and carriers needing a good heal here and there, I’ve felt more necessity with healing fields with my staff Ele than I ever have before. Healing actually really helpful there.

Just more situations where being glassy for the sake of higher DPS isn’t ideal, and necessitating for healing may just help the stigma against it.

Why endgame content is bad

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

Levelling can’t last forever, and additional modes of progression can’t hold players interests indefinitely. Endgame is an intrinsic part of any MMO.

I do understand the “the game shouldn’t start at endgame” sentiment though. Honestly, GW2 does a lot right in that regard. Level scaling, giving purpose to over levelled quests, dungeons and bosses available at many levels, PVP not locked out to those who haven’t gotten the right gear in PVE.

See I don’t even think it’s Scarlet herself, it’s jsut the fact that the story seemed to find more and more contrived ways for her to do things. It could have been anyone in that place.

For her part, I love the idea of a engineer, pro-technology, anti-pale tree Sylvari, and the character herself was ok. Just the fact that she pulled all these alliances and gigantic machines out of nowhere for little to no explained reason,

I’d like to see the more jokey weapons get some more… character neutral version. As good as Quip is, only a very few characters actually really fit that kinda of whimisical archetype.

That said, I’m not against more whimsical versions of more serious legendaries. At the end of the day, we just need more options to fit more characters.

Honestly I think the Sunrise/Twilight/Eternity set is what I’d consider a good case for a great legendary. Extremely unique (I’ve never seen anything like that in other MMOs), easily able to fit in many character styles, able to be used for a more serious character style, yet has a whimsical painterly effect that works for other characters as well, even has different colour schemes available. I’d love a Sword version of those weapons actually.

The Small Things you want from HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

So the big new features get the spotlight, as they should, I was musing on the little things that could change in the game. I’m not talking gameplay changes, but just small little touches in the expansion.

I’d love to see little social additions to the game. New emotes would be a good start. Given people’s love of the PVP side, taunts would actually be fun.

Honestly, half the fun of GW2 is just hanging out at Lion’s Arch, enjoying a goofy map chat, maybe goofing around with a Box of Fun, or having an impromptu dance off. I remember when Fiery Greatswords were being nerfed, a bunch of people in LA were just hanging near the Mystic Forge spamming Fiery Greatsword skills.

And I dunno… I remember in Destiny, one of the useless but fun things was just kicking around the ball in The Tower. Stuff like that, maybe have a ball you can pass to others. Have a small activity available in the big hubs of the city, that people just standing around between runs can goof around with. Like, maybe have people able to throw coins into the Lion’s Arch fountain when rebuilt. Pointless, but fun, something to just goof around with between runs.

In general, one of the under-appreciated things about MMOs are things you do when you’re not doing the typical questing and dungeons.

Part of the reason I love Fishing in other MMOs is because its just a fun way to just screw around for a bit when you still want to play, but don’t feel like doing another dungeon run or something. I wouldn’t mind if we got fishing.

Little easter eggs and small changes in the world would be nice. Maybe have a few NPCs mention the Pact’s defeat, or the turning of the Sylvari in conversation. The vines cropping up around the world during the LS was a nice touch, I’d like to see more of that.

What are some minor additions and changes that you feel would improve the game?

I see what Anet's strategy is

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

yanipheonu.5798

So apparently I need to give a lesson on, yknow, how capitalism works.

Anet and NCSoft are a business. While they certainly will have their own drive and asperations for making a good game and using the talents of their customers, at the end of the day, they need to make money.

Yes, parts of the Living Story were used to hype what would turn out to be paid expansion. There is nothing “wrong” with that.

This isn’t some form of greed. It’s simply Anet using their own product to instill value into another. That’s certainly not illegal, or intrinsically greedy, or wrong. That’s just a company trying to sell their product.

Their only failure, in the context of the market, is not meeting some peoples’ idea of good value. And if you don’t find value in buying something, its a free market, go elsewhere.

Anet isn’t “your friend”. No company really is. They need to make money to survive, and in this case, they’ve done things to try and make their product more appealing in the Living Story and in the new features only available in the new expansion. They aren’t making free updates of the game out of “the goodness of their hearts”. While the content creators surely may have their hearts in their works, its also a way to make money, even if indirectly through the Gem Store.

And rest assured, this is no bait-and-switch. Guild Wars has had a long history of a buy-to-play model, which seems to have carried over to GW2 (though to be fair, this could have been more clearly stated to players, but to be fair, they may not have settled on an expansion model). A series of free content given over time is no indication that you won’t have to pay for something in the future.

Other games with subscriptions have expansions as well. There is a well established history in the MMO genre for content locked off until expansion, without the benefit of free content between them.

I remember Wow rolling out patches with content leading up to Wrath of the Lich King, even for people who didn’t intend to buy the actual expansion. That’s not some bait and switch trick, just a business hyping their product and creators wanting to have a flow into the next part of their game.

If you don’t find value in the paid expansion, that’s just fine. But there’s no big unethical trick here. It’s simply a product that is being offered.

How the revenant should start storywise

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

I’d honestly like them to do something like the Death Knights were introduced in WOW. Add a new storyline, since this class wouldn’t make sense to simply pop in during the conventional story, that the player goes though. Though that would also mean that that gameplay section would start at a higher level, which is the main issue.

Gives a good look into the lore of new expansion and overall world, if we see more about what makes a Revenant a Revenant, and even key it into the events of teh world since Point of No Return.

Reduced world-boss map capacity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

Alright let’s be clear here: the world boss zerg is pretty killer on the frame rate. While it’ll clearly run alright if you’ve got a better computer, but for a lot of us who usually run fine in smaller groups and instances, frame rate DIES during the zerg.

Say what you want, but the engine isn’t really optimized for the huge zergs involved in world bosses.

That said, I do love the world bosses, even the timers. They could use some retuning in difficulty for sure, but having that many people in one place is a very nice social aspect of the game. Some of the best in-game chats ive had were during or waiting for a world boss.

But yeah, I always need to lower my settings when I’m doing them.

That’s not really how expansions work.

What happens if more people bought more PVE than PVP content or vice versa. We get a minority niche that gets underserved since the money is in one section and not the other.

Also, from a business perspective, it just makes sense. Why have only one part of your development team contributing to the content released by the expansion, when all of them can contribute to them, all supported by the combined price of the expansion? On the basest level, it just makes more sense to have one big lump of content to pay for on this scale rather than piecemealing it, given the development costs of these features.

The key would be maintain social aspects, thee main concern with housing tends to be it removing some of social aspect of main cities and hubs.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I recgonize that a big part of why we aren’t spgetting new races is that adding their content to the New Player Experience would be a bit hassle, with new voice acting and race specific content and so on.

It goe me wondering, is the NPE really worth it? It certainly was novel first time, as well as the little bits of lore it revealed were interesting.

But honestly, I wouldn’t mind sacrificing the NPE for a new race. Simplifying the basic story down and simply utilizing the existing quests and content in the PVE world to level.

Would you sacrifice the current NPE for the capability of a new race?

While watching Wooden Potatoes talking about the newest HoT trailer, he mentioned the possibility of the Shield Mesmer being a take on the never-released Guild Wars Utopia profession Chronomancer, given the clock motif that character posessed.

While certainly not any sort of confirmation, the past professions not currently in game due to the consolidation of abilites into core classes could really work as a specialization.

Here are some GW classes, including the supposed unused classes from Utopia. I’m no expert so if I’ve missed something let me know.

Assassin
Ritualist
Paragon
Dervish

Chronomancer

Is Anet being too secretive?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: yanipheonu.5798

yanipheonu.5798

Yknow, i was looking back at the original post-Living Story trailer. And I realized that there was really no reason why we could have been told this was an expansion from the beginning.

This wasn’t some strange take on the expansion model that would need proper explanation. It was simply an expansion pack. No real reason to be so secretive about it. All it did was make people argue over what the thing was. People weren’t even convinced it was an expansion.

Why do that?

And I get this suspicion that there’s a bit too much secretiveness for their own good. Some misguided attempt at mystique?

Now we have information only available in interviews, such as only one specialization being available at launch, without any assurances or idea of timeframe for when these things will be expanded.

A good example is the supposed reveal that the “spear” rytlock was using in the trailer was just a staff that the artists messed around with. That doesn’t add mystique. That just confuses people.

Key information such as this being a retail release or whether we need this expansion for certain content were buried in the FAQs, when they should be key parts of the value proposition of the expansion.

Things like specializations or masteries or new areas being revealed over time are things that can certainly be rolled out over time, like a fighting game reveals characters over time.

But we don’t really even know the basics. With the case of specialization, with only one specialization supposedly available, that big selling point may not even figure into people’s builds. This MAY be the framework for new specializations rolled out over LS updates, but we just don’t know.

I’m still excited for aspects for this expansion, but for now, there’s a lot of confusion that may not be warranted for the sake of secrecy.

First legitimate disappointment I’ve had. Seriously, for guys who like to proclaim themselves trying to break from MMO conventions and such, have only one version for each class of a hugely touted feature is remarkably disappointing.

Frankly if there’s only one specialization, there will be many people who don’t bother at all with the supposedly big new feature.

Seriously, it’s your big first expansion. Buck up and give is more than one.
