Leaderboard credit for top players?

trampled underfoot.4523

make sure you dont have 0 points in a match and then proceed to ignore the personal scoreboard because it has absolutely no relation to player skill, and as such no it should not reflect in leaderboard ranking in any way.

So if a player gets 5 points and runs around chasing players and ensures your team loses, that should not reflect at all in leaderboard?

Think of it this way, if you have two players who only play as a team and they share every win and loss together. One player is constantly meeting his objectives, capping, defending, rotating properly etc. While the second player is chasing players around the map, generally messing around or not concerning himself with contributing to a win, both players will in theory be rated the same in skill.

Which player would you prefer on your team? Which player would you suggest is “better”? Shouldn’t this be reflected in these overall Leaderboard rankings?

You receive points for defending though. Also, any good player will adapt when he is losing so if he sees that they are avoiding his point he will rotate and assist on others points, thus getting more credit, if he is winning, no need to move as the win trumps all.

I am specifically speaking of losses only.

I wanted to ask about this, since I don’t understand the board, mmr and all of this very well. If it is not already accounted for, there should be reasonable credit reflected on the Leaderboard ranks given to those who even if they lose, are successful in their objectives in the match.

For example, always on top score, top defense of points, capping of points, kills, ressing teammates etc. I think this would soften the blow of players who understand RA and who play better than most for being punished on a team of players who don’t (or won’t).

What do you guys think? The idea of matches and black and white “win/loss” doesn’t truly reflect the skill and or contribution a player makes.

This system is better because it encourages play. Some may not like it, but how fair is it for someone to get on a win streak and not play for a week while others have to climb uphill to catch up?

One thing we can’t have is the old HA approach where spvp players will be spamming for “top ranked, winning players, those on a winning streak only” in order to improve their rank on the board.

It’s never going to be perfect, but they can tweak as they need. I honestly get destroyed in ranked of late anyways. If I had a say I would suggest that they give rewards to those who even though they lose are constantly on top of team in score or objective success.

This is where GW2 is absolutely left in the dust of GW1 and may never be its equal in pvp.

I constantly ran my own creative builds and had a high level of success. Without the secondary class, yes it is easier to balance, but the builds are stale and redundant. Maybe some new skills and more freedom in the future will change this, but I can’t see it happening.

I still run my own builds, I don’t have the time nor interest to follow what all the cool kids are doing. If I end up .500 I suppose that will have to do. I play with some players who know their builds, they are great 1v1, but the most basic concepts such as “fighting on point” eludes them. Sometimes I just don’t have the patience to lead

I looted Tooth of Frostfang from these very forums. Yes, you read that correctly. Someone off these forums gave me a precursor in response to a thread I had posted. (And no it wasn’t Anet).

Funny you say this. Not sure if you are being honest or not, but on two different occasions someone in GW2 has sent me 50g without warning or request. I returned it both times though I forget why the second person sent it, but the first guy sent it because I had lost about 300g in the Mystic Forge, seeking of course, ironically a precursor. I think my story of sorrow affected them so much they tried to comfort my losses hah.

Three Wurms in Bloodtide Coast precursor idea

trampled underfoot.4523

I have yet to meet anyone who has been in a successful group that slayed all three wurms. I just asked a full server in Cursed Shore if they succeeded or knew someone else who succeeded and I only received responses to the contrary. Maybe there are specific servers that succeed (I do recall that another server attempts this even more often than others), regardless. It is a suggestion, not just for this but for other potential massive events in the future. Another suggestion if it is easily beaten (which would defeat the purpose of the reward) ensure it is NOT a scaled event.

My belief is that at least for those who play a tonne that they would prefer a very difficult event as long as there is the appropriate level of reward. It would also dismiss to some degree those who suggest that the ability to obtain a legedary is based too much on luck as now there would be a direct correlation between achievement (beating an extremely tough event) and precursor reward,

Three Wurms in Bloodtide Coast precursor idea

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: trampled underfoot.4523

trampled underfoot.4523

I’ve completed just about everything in the game, but the one elusive accomplishment would be slaying of the three headed wurms in bloodtide coast. Trying to coordinate the number of players to succeed at this event is a task in itself let alone actually completing it, and I cannot see it changing anytime soon with the advent of new events and living stories to pursue. I am on JQ server and have yet to see a successful run.

So, I believe that it would take a massive carrot to be dangled if Aanet has any desire to make this at least a semi-regularly attended challenge. I also think that this suggestion could be applied to any of the large scale, and more challenging events in the future that Aanet might want to draw interest in where little exists. Either guarantee a one precursor award to one lucky participant per successful slaying of all three wurms, or, at the very least, a very large increase in the percentage chances of someone getting a precursor.

Almost certainly if the guarantee of one lucky person getting a precursor upon success were enacted the numbers for this event would swell exponentially. Furthermore, it would really generate interest in particular events, these guarantee rewards could even be cycled through various events in a “spotlight” manner to draw attention to some large scale events that players have lost interest in or moved on from. Particularly as the game grows and expands.

Just my two cents, tell me what you think.

They do have some failsafe’s in place as I learned about 2 months ago. Before the new patch, I was trashing a legendary PVP weapon. You could buy for nothing at the time, it was just for show.

As I tried to trash it I received a prompt that asked me to type in the entire name of the weapon (for example “The Bitfrost”) in order to trash it.

Obviously I am not going to try it for my PVE legendary, but I have to assume (I hope) there are similar protections as well. I have sometimes switched a weapon onto my character while salvaging a large number of items for example and almnsot salavaged the weapon I normally use. Shyte happens eh? We just have to be careful.

How I interpret Magic find, suggestions...

In my year of play time I think I’ve only seen only around 50 Exotics drop, none of which was a precursor, and keep in mind that I have done hundreds of bosses, ran the champ trains many times, used the mystic forge, everything…

Since increasing my MF I get alot of rares, which has increased my income substantially due to salvaging them to Globs of Ectoplasm, but that’s it.

Your stats and tactics sound similar to mine, except now I salvage blues and greens for more magic find hope, where as before this was vital merchant currency.

This is why it would be beneficial for players to know the facts about magic find so we can set our expectations accordingly. I don’t know why this important subject has not been transparently addressed by now.

Thanks for that, it is the first time I have seen something quantified. I would still like to see a specific comparison to the top tier loot, some sort of percentage expecation or improvement based on mf level. Isiah can feel free to respond to this or any other Dev in the know if they please.

There is a reason so many people are skeptical. So does the above comment suggest that you will get a better chance at green (say 1/10 category), instead of a blue, which might be a 1/5 category, BUT, the chance of you getting a precursor or exotic is not impacted at all?

Isiah specifically suggested rare crafting material, which is consistent with what I have found as I posted above, but I would like to see them mention precursors in particular…at the very least exotics.

I just believe that the vast majority of players who put in the effort and long hours; the most hardcore are looking at the benefit of the mf beyond mats, greens, blues etc. Again, it might be implied that, say a precursor is in the 1/25000 category or whatever, and maybe your chance improves to 3/25000. Without a specific suggestion to this, I almost have to think that precursors are in a “special class” outside the MF (as chests and the forge is). I;m only going on my experience and that of others who I have spoken to (and read on here).

I was right on the magic find bandwagon from Day 1, had my max gear quite early before the changes, now moving quickly along to the 300% level. I believe that it is overrated, possibly even non consequential when searching for the “Holy Glory loot” such as precursors.

Here is the problem with Magic Find, it seems to me that there hasn’t been any real explanation as to how it works. What I have experienced in over 4000 hours of play is that Magic Find DOES seem to increase the quality of mats I receive in loot (sometimes quantity), but in regards to the most desireable loot, I dont see a difference at all. Zero precursor drops from loot in thousands of hours of “end game” play. So what is the definition of the “improvement”? What is the standard they are using to determine this improvement? Is it more of any loot, improved “better loot” (greens and rares instead of whites), or, as I believe MOST players chase the increased MF number for, is there an improved chance for a precursor and/or exotics in general?

I always felt that Aanet should have clarified generally what MF affects, there doesn’t need to be a promise of getting a precursor obviously, as this is still randomized, but at least explain the percentage difference between someone with 50 MF and the guy who works hard to hit 300. There is an implied value assigned to Magic find, that more is better, but better for what? The only thing I have read officially is that it doesn’t affect boss chests. What about chance for exotics? Precursors? The rarest of drops?

As I was increasing my Agony Resistance on my equipment I realized an obvious and quantifiable explanation as to how each number of AR affects my character per FOTM level, why not something similar for magic find? Below would be an example of what I am referring to.

I"Magic find 0-50, ____ % of an exotic being a precursor", “magic find 51-100, ____ percentage of an exotic drop being a precursor”. They could even get more granular and it wouldn’t really provide any details about patterns so that someone could identify when or even IF the precursor would ever come. He would be assured though that through time and high level gameplay they have a shot at some real high end loot, not simply more greens and/or t6 for example.

That’s my take on this. It’s not scientific, but I have yet to see anything that clarifies the baseline comparison, so we all have to throw darts at the idea.

If anyone has any similar opinions, official information released or experience let me know. Magic find isn’t the end all be all, but I would love to understand that all of the salvaging I have been applying has some real value. As of now, I have to agree with what so many people have stated in-game and elsewhere about this mysterious component of the game.

I cannot agree. Rank is all relative, as long as everyone is bumped (save for that very small number who are already 80) than it doesn’t really matter. Furthermore, it might allow for new higher ranks down the road…if this game lasts 8+ years as GW1 did, this is a possibility.

Furthermore, I would argue that the effort and time required to get to r55 is much more consuming than it requires to obtain 100g in pve, especially when some might get it from a boss chest. SPVP takes time and commitment, I am “only” just about to hit r51 and I have played a ton. So it isn’t as if those who hit r55 didn’t put in the effort.

I appreciate and understand the analogy, but if SPVP is to grow and prosper, we as a community have to accept changes; it’s inevitable.

Thanks for the response sendmark.

I agree with you in regards to people willing to engage, I find that if you do it in a “non-authoritative” manner, it helps. I ask others their thoughts during the countdown to the match (for those who are there) and reiterate simple instructions such as “mid and home only plz” or, “dont overextend”, “who is on such and such”. Sometimes it can be frustrating but all you can do is try. Also, it’s important to accept others input and bring weight to it, accepting good ideas and orders during the match.

Ultimately, I think some communication upgrades would help, especially as people become more competitive and driven to move their way up the ladder. Some simple improvements without them being cumbersome go a long way.

Communication in spvp not op builds...

in PvP

Posted by: trampled underfoot.4523

trampled underfoot.4523

There is alot of discussion regarding overpowered classes. In the vast majority of matches the loss comes down to teamwork (or inexperience), not overpowered classes. Everyone knows that balance is impossible, I purposely avoid playing “flavor of the month builds”, or even researching what builds people post, choosing to try different things myself. Oddly I don’t find the same problems many others do in beating such overpowered classes. Maybe because I am slightly naive, but I have thousands of games under my belt.

If you are working well with a team there is NO build that can overcome superior strategy except in a narrow set of circumstances. It’s the ebb and flow of the match, the quick thinking on the fly and ability to execute. It’s the reason I started the Solo Arena with 50 MORE losses than wins at one point and then I realized (outside of the horrible string of 4 man teams I got), that the best thing I could do was take charge, bark orders and try and coordinate the team. I found that too often five players would stand around and just go without any coordination. I was able to get down the difference between my losses to wins to single digits (now since crept up slightly) simply based on a willingness to communicate and encourage others to do the same during the match.

I have a winning record in TA with limited play, the biggest difference to me is the communication. If you communicate in SPVP your chances of success increase greatly. If anything I would love to see them develop some sort of communication improvements, as it stands we only rely on pinging the map and targetting enemies. Maybe we could have players click a drop down menu that states what they are doing (“bunking” etc.) and which location they are at (“far”, “mid”)or headed to in a quick fashion. As it stands we currently type this quickly in chat instead of there being a quick glance option to view it all simultaneously.

I know there is the map and team information and locations that is ongoing that one needs to pay attention to, but if I were going to do anything to spvp to improve “balance” this would be my choice. Obviously many in TA use voice comm, but for solo and even hotjoin (for those who try to win), such improvements might focus the attention on what is important for success outside of the latest popular build.

If anyone disagrees with me I draw this example: would anyone suggest that say, the winning team of any major tournament that Aanet runs; running NO warrior and engineer decap would lose to another average or even above average team that ran only those top “overpowered” classes and/or builds? I would place my money on the coordinated, tournament winning team everytime.

trampled underfoot.4523

I don’t get why there is so much whining and complaining. Here is the fact: there will NEVER be perfect “balance”, the term itself when applied to SPVP can’t ever be achieved.

The best overcome imbalances with team play. Some who wish to run around and battle 1v1 and feel upset that they are at a disadvantage in some confrontations don’t understand the game. How many times have we received the challenge to “battle 1v1” after the opposition loses? I find it amusing that anyone would consider that any measure of success in the game.

It’s a team game, it’s not chess or battleship. You play as a team, communicate, remain fluid and flow like water, adapt, you can beat the vast majority of teams except in a narrow case. Primarily those situations in which your opponent remains a step ahead of you and you are simply outwitted, outmatched (and sometimes yes, facing a difficult class mix).

I am one of those of old school GW1 players, who learned the intricacies of builds, counters and HA strats through trial and error. You take best practices and do your best to execute them during the match. There was a much lower level of complaining it seems, players respected the challenge and realized the obvious limitations. If you can’t play as a team and get on the same page, no skill “balancing” will fix this. You will lose more often than not.

There, it’s off my chest. Take it easy on me when we meet in the arena please.

Yeah they can be annoying, but what would you prefer, the same map for every match?

These additions are important imo because they correct some of the imbalances. For instance, if every map were simple three points it would be a pure bunkfest. The hammer eliminates the hardcore bunker if required it also gives strategic teamplay value over success based strictly on individual builds.

We all let off some steam after a particularly bad beating, you deal with it and move on, maybe even learn from it. I’ve learn to accept the maps themselves and I try to pick up on “best practices”. The more variance the better in regards to map types. I get bored without the differences, I hope to see more in the future.
