Let us choose how we activate glider! =(
The length of time you hold down the jump button has no bearing on the distance of the jump.
Tap the space bar, no matter how you press it, the jump is the same.
Don’t keep holding the spacebar while jumping.
It’s a matter of practice, but you’ll be fine.
(but yea, I agree that the glider shouldn’t be opening from a press and hold space, or it should have a toggle option like dodging has)

No this is so dumb!
When I do long jumps I like holding down the spacebar!
That is how I play games that have Jump…
Why should I be forced to change how I play because of this broken system?
Double-tap spacebar should be gliding, NOT this stupid hold space crap…
This is PC gaming… At least give us options ArenaNet =(
Let us decide if we want to hold spacebar, or double-tab spacebar, or keybind it for gliding so everyone is happy!
I want to choose the option to disable hold spacebar = Glide.
I want my glide to activate when I double-tab spacebar to glide!
And I’d also like an option to keybind gliding in case. =(
You might consider posting in the ‘official’ QoL Suggestions Sticky, where the Devs are more apt to see your suggestion(s).
Good luck.

A key binding would have been nice for gliding early on but if they changed the glide key now there would be lots of people crashing if they changed it. Players are used to the jump button being the glide button. It would take weeks for people to get used to it if they are active players. It would be better if they did a key binding to disable/enable gliding globally while keeping the gliding on the jump key but there would still be people forgetting it was disabled.
I do miss being able to fire the bow with my ranger during mid jumps though. It’s harder to do that with the glide.
i notice that if i am nervous, i may activate my glider, you may be accidently activating your glider.

It has in other games since, what, the 80s, though. Muscle memory.

Good b8, m8, I r8 your reply 8/8. I’m on the 12th page, though, not the 8th.
It has been done.
Option 1 – Double Tab Spacebar to Glide
Option 2 – Hold Spacebar to Glide
Option 3 – Select a keybind to Glide
BINGO! PROBLEM SOLVED!
EVERYONE HAPPY! =)
Here are Options that I want to see added too the game:
Option 1 – Double Tab Spacebar to Glide
Option 2 – Hold Spacebar to Glide
Option 3 – Select a keybind to Glide
Problem solved!
Option 2 – Hold Spacebar to Glide
Problem solved!
this is actually how its working right now.

No kitten sherlock…
I don’t like Option 2….
For those who like it we should keep it as an OPTION… I would prefer using the double-tap spacebar to glide and other people prefer the keybind gliding. My suggestion is have 3 options so everyone is happen. I am certainly not happy with how gliding works currently. It ruins jumping puzzles for me.
i see. my fault. well, i dont mind.
so, why not…
Jumping + opening glider on the same button is the fundamental problem, which reduced my ability to do JPs by around 50%.
In addition, the game has no-fly-zones in some JPs and normal gliding in others (+ gliding in the open world).
I would like to see the ability to have a key bind that sets the “tap space bar” mode to “double tap”, which would allow you to rest your thumb on the space bar that 1/10 sec longer on difficult jumps (like in JPs or jumping sections), while you can still save yourself with a double tap from falling to your doom.
But pretty much everything would be an improvement to what we have now.
Still keeps a volume of Kurzick poems ;)
Simple, give us an option to disable gliding. If we fall to our deaths because we forgot to toggle it back on, our bad. It’s just not perceivable to me how long is too long. I could do 8 jumps fine with no glider deployment and then floof, glider and now I don’t make that jump. It’s aggravating as all kitten.

Another l2p issue. You’re used to holding spacebar despite the fact it doesn’t add any distance to the jump.

In all the time since HoT bring us the gliding system, I have had this problem… 2 times.
So, it IS a l2p problem.
That said, it would be great if they add the option. I shouldn’t harm anyone to have that choice available, and it would open the “hold jump” input for some interesting stuff.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”
Hawks
No no no. Holding spacebar (jump) for gliding is perfect way to open it.
It is a great feature!
1) Most JP areas disable gliding.
2) You don’t need to hold “jump” if you dont plan to open glider, just release the button! Only wsad/arrows matter!

I’m NOT using the controls wrong noob.
This is how I use the controls since GW2 beta when doing jumping puzzles. This is how I played it before the stupid gliders came into the game. I shouldn’t be forced to use a jump key any different because they added a gliding option which btw still cannot be disabled by choice.
Problem is people play and use keys differently and this is how I use it.
This system is BROKEN…
It needs FIXING…
Best FIX is to ADD 3 Options I suggested:
Option#1 – Double-tap spacebar to glide
Option#2 – Hold spacebar to glide
Option#3 – Keybind a key to glide
PROBLEM SOLVED….
Seriously…
If you like how it is now then great… But I don’t and I’m not the only one… I mess up a lot because of this stupid gliding system and my suggestion simply adds options for players to play the way they want that works best for them. What works best for me is double tapping spacebar and/or keybinding glider to avoid turning my jumps into glide when doing jumping puzzles.
Also Not all Jumping Puzzle maps have glider disabled!
And even if I’m NOT doing a jumping puzzle, I do not want to accidently glide when I do not want too. ArenaNet your system is broken and the lack of choice on how we can glide is ruining the game for some of us. Please for the love of god, just add the 3 options I suggested so that EVERYONE is happy with the gliding system.

So because you’re too stubborn to evolve your key usage, you expect Anet to change it around you?
edit: and yes I used to have this problem, I would hold space for too long. However I’ve gotten used to it now.

Simply use software to change the functionality of the spacebar, such as AutoHotKey. If you have macro enabled hardware, simply set a macro key to press spacebar.

Evidently you are, your glider keeps opening even though you don’t want it due to your inadequate usage of the controls.
Yet I am the noob somehow?
Cool story bro.

No it does not, you need to learn how to properly use the controls.
I was used to holding the spacebar too, but I adapted.
Instead you demand the developers spend time adjusting the system because you refuse to learn, which is more than a little arrogant.
I do not want to accidently glide when I do not want too.
Then don’t.

And here I thought the ability to adapt to a changing environment is what enabled kitten sapiens sapiens to evolve as far as they did. I guess that’s true of the species, but not of every individual within the species…
Seriously, though. Learn to adapt. Every game since the 80’s had [insert whatever mechanic]. Well, GW2 doesn’t. You either adapt or get left behind. Unless you have a disability that prevents you from executing jumps without gliding, all you need is the will to change. Frankly, the expectation that all games throughout the decades should hold to the same mechanics seems rather unrealistic and reductive, not in the least boring.
Edit: thanks to forum censorship I can’t even write our species’ taxonomic designation without baby cats popping up……

You mean like this?
Double-Tap to Evade — Double-pressing a movement key will make your character roll in the same direction. When disabled, you can only evade by binding a key to the Dodge action. Many players recommend disabling this option for those who use non-standard input devices or who find themselves accidentally double-tapping (and thereby wasting endurance), and especially while completing jumping puzzles.
An option that has been in the game since Launch or Close to Launch.
I thought Gliding had a similar setting but I never checked since it never bothered me.
One thing to consider is that deploying the glider by holding the jump key will result in the glider opening on a predictable point of the jumping arc, and that predictability is useful.
With an alternative deploying method, I fully expect to see “I can’t double-tap fast enough to open my glider at the right time” threads.
I would have preferred for the control for a new movement option to be customizable rather than tying it an existing control key.
Also don’t underestimate that some players have iffy keyboards where the spacebar doesn’t always trigger right away when tapped so there’s a need to press and hold until they see their character jump. Or keyboards that can’t reliably chord some combinations of keys.
Not everyone owns a gamer keyboard with real switches but the mushy keyboards that came with their system.
RIP City of Heroes
Every game since the 80’s had [insert whatever mechanic]. Well, GW2 doesn’t.
Hence this tread.
Please fix this issue!
I am not the only one with this issue ArenaNet.
A lot of us has problems with this and the best solution is to give us the option to double-tap to glide and/or keybind the glide function.
Honestly, this isn’t something I can get used too with current system.
It simply doesn’t work for me at all. The system to me is broken because glide always triggers no matter how hard I try NOT to hold the stupid spacebar but it always triggers. Before gliding was introduced, I did not have this issue and I loved the jumping mechanics but now with gliding introduced, this issue always occurs and I hate it so much.
Consider this: Other people can’t adopt to this broken system. Give us options so it would work for everyone. The 3 options I mentioned honestly solves everything.
Dodging for example, double-tap to evade does not work well for me. Because you have the option to disable it and to keybind dodge, I never had any issues but there are other people who prefer the double-tap to dodge and that is wonderful for them! But it’s not for me! It would mess me up… This is the same case with the gliding system… Give us option to keybind glider and Give us the option to double-tap spacebar to glide and problem solved.
This is an issue for a lot of people…
Sure there are a lot of people who can adopt and like it how it is, but please do NOT ignore the people who cannot adopt to this and who mess up because of this dumb system. I assure you, it is not a waste of time or resources. Gliding is pretty much a vital part of your game and when it becomes something that interference with gameplay rather than enhancing it the gameplay experience then we have a problem. And this problem needs to be solved so please do not ignore it.

I’m NOT being stobborn. I’m being reasonable!
I’m not asking them to change the system, I’m asking them to add options so that we the players can change it so the individual can choose what best suits them.
Why are you so against options?
I played GW2 since BETA… We didn’t have Gliders in Beta!
That is how LONG I have played this game. I tried to get “used to not holding down spacebar for long jumps” but it doesnt work for me! I always ALWAYS mess up because glider activation screws me over no matter how hard I try. This is clearly avoidable with the options I have presented. Giving us options to keybind glider activation and giving us the option to make double-tap spacebar to glide will solve this issue. This is a fact. When you give people choices then problems like this wouldn’t even occur in the first place. Just because the current option works for you doesn’t mean it should work for everybody else. No.. that is not how real life works. What works for some people wont work for others and that is why we need to encourage developers to give us options. This attitude of “Deal with it” or “Get good” is toxic and needs to die. It doesn’t encourage innovation or perfection. It encourages devs to be lazy about an issue that can easily be solved with a few codes…
I’m all for options. When the game started, I had a problem with AoE skills due to my really bad hands using the mouse. I even stopped playing for awhile. Between then and now, they added the option to snap AoE circles to target, which I happily use now to “mouseless” target my AoEs. Options, people! They’re awesome!
So, yes, options are always good. Personally, I love jump-and-hold, because it works for me, but having an option for other people to change it just for them would be awesome.

@DreamyAbaddon Your replies to people are not helping your cause. Your issue is a L2P issue. It may not be an issue you wish to correct at this time, but it is an L2P issue. You’re stuck in muscle memory from other games where distance jumped equals how long you held the spacebar down. So far you are the only person posting in this thread who has any issue with gliding and the spacebar. Telling others that it’s not L2P issue means you don’t really understand the game and its mechanics and hurts your position.
I have L2P issues as well that I’m not bothering to correct. But I’m not using those as a reason to change the game.
I’d personally put this at a low priority on the QoL list. It would be nice, especially for players on iffy keyboards where it’s not necessarily an L2P issue but a hardware issue. Not everyone can afford to buy a new keyboard when the one that they have works for everything but GW2 Jumping Puzzles/Gliding. But the people who fall into that category are a very small minority, so the QoL is not higher than say Build Templates.

I offered the dodge roll because its actually almost the same.. so I figured maybe the same setting options would work as well.
Glider normal = as now
Glider on command = requires a second key or a double jump
Glider off = it will never open
These seem to be the best three settings given discussion and situations
This isn’t a L2P issue…
This is a System/Mechanic issue which can be solved by adding the options neccessary so all players can use the keys that works best for them.
I’m all for options. When the game started, I had a problem with AoE skills due to my really bad hands using the mouse. I even stopped playing for awhile. Indeed! Options are good! That’s is my point!
I’m glad they added the snap AoE circle to target option for players like you who needed it. And I’m glad you enjoy the current glide system. I just hope they add more options on how we get to activate glider cause that is killing the game for me with current system. Clearly this wasn’t an issue until they added the gliding system and now I just can’t for the life of me stand it anymore. It’s broken for me. The current system doesn’t feel natural to how I used to play it. I hope they give us more options so we can choose HOW we want to activate glider.
Choices ArenaNet. Give us Choices! Let us decide what feels natural when it comes to activating glider.
It is an L2P issue. You may not wish to work on it, but that doesn’t make it not an L2P issue.
You don’t mention any personal handicaps, hardware, or internet issues that explain why you hold the spacebar when jumping. Which means the issue lies with you. And that is an L2P issue when it is not due to any issue that you can’t overcome.
This isn’t a L2P issue…
Yes it is.
If it wasn’t, then EVERYONE would be suffering from this “problem”.
The whole issue stems from you wanting to hold spacebar while jumping, something that is not required at all, and your stubborn refusal to adjust your play style accordingly.
I don’t think the devs should spent precious development time on a trivial issue that can easily be overcome by adjusting your play style. When HoT released I had the exact same problem you now have, I was able to overcome it and so can you.

Personally I don’t have a problem with the glider. However I can see why some people might have them. Old habits are hard to kill.
As long as the current method of deploying the glider still remains an option (like suggested by op), I’d say go fot it. More options are almost always good.
