I expected each legend to have a bunch of utility abilities to choose from within the legend.

This is quite disappointing.
I hope I can at least change the order of utilities on the skillbar.

In the stress test beta where we first tried out Revenant, you could indeed swap the order of the 7-9 skills. I did so first thing. I assume this remained true for last week’s beta or people would have lit up the forums about the change.

In the last beta i played utilities been resetting its position every legend swap. Hopefully its olny a bug if not they better change it..

That was just a bug, it’s intended to save each bar’s skills independently so you can rearrange them how you like per legend. It’s already fixed internally.

Hey all,
A heads up: we’re adding an F2 button for the items that you (thieves) steal from enemies.
With the way that stolen items exist, it’s not always the best option to use your stolen item instantly, but often you have to dump it in order to gain access to Steal again. As a quality-of-life change, you’ll now steal from an enemy and see the stolen item in the F2 slot, while F1 will show Steal and its current cooldown. If you steal again without using the stolen item, it will be replaced/overwritten by the new one.
We weren’t able to show this on the core specialization livestream, but wanted to pass the message on so that it’s not just a bomb drop when the core specialization changes happen (when they’re ready).

Thanks for coming out to OS for the GvG support. The number of spectators were insane, I even had a queue to get in and play! I’m not the voice of the GvG community but it seemed to mean a lot to us to see some Anet representation there.

Simply standing there swapping servers was blowing people’s minds. Good times!

I had a blast last night. That was a fun event to be sure. I’ll be back for more!

Evan – this is a problem with a pretty well understood solution under Glicko – you rank players by their point estimate MMR, minus a multiple of their rating deviation (2 or 3 typically).

We actually do this during matchmaking to err on the side of inactivity dropping skill level. If we had a strict Glicko leaderboard now, I think this is an approach we would take.

One problem we really want to solve for a new ladder system is how easy players can understand their rating. With Glicko, we don’t really get that. This is one benefit of the point system we’ve been testing (Though it needs some in-game info).

But as my post suggests, wins should only serve to rectify ties with personal rating. Just like it shows with the link in my last post for the people in rank 23, 24 and 25.

What I was getting at is that Glicko MMR is very granular, and would almost never need tie-breakers to differentiate players.

Also I don’t see a single reason to don’t decay MMR directly. MMR is tool to evaluate player skill, we could say that someone who doesn’t play gets rusty and his skill is going down over time while not playing.

The Glicko algorithm already accounts for this with rating deviation. The problem we’d run into is the values we’d want for leaderboard decay would most likely not match something that makes sense in Glicko.

This way we don’t have to worry about decay or inactivity, we rectify position on the leaderboard based on wins and losses.

This is one thing that the current point system has going for it. We don’t need decay because players can pass each other. However, this gives the impression of grind being how to climb. The point system would have to be much less granular for wins to be a good tie breaker.

Have 2 lists, one for the true MMR, and one for leader board rating.

After every match, do the following:

  • leaderboard_rating += (true_MMR – leaderboard_rating) * 0.1f

This effectively means the volatility of the true MMR is guarded and can only get closer to the real MMR by 10% each game the player played. Leaderboard rating starts at 0, and is reset to 0 every month (season).

I personally really like this idea.
A goal we’ve had for PvP is to make the game very approachable and understandable. While I think this algorithm would solve some of the MMR leaderboard problems, it still uses hidden numbers (Glicko MMR) that people wouldn’t be able to really understand and calculate themselves. I think there are options that will probably give us the best of both sides, though.

No Decay: We can’t decay MMR directly, which causes the problem of people sitting inactive at the top of the leaderboard.

Why not? Lack of tech or something?

If we mess with the Glicko numbers, it directly changes matchmaking. If we were to implement a decay that drops actuall mmr by 10% over a week, that player isn’t 10% worse, we just didn’t want them at the top of the leaderboard. When they players goes to play more games, they’ll be farming lower-skilled players because we dropped their actual MMR. This is why the old decay system was just for display, and snapped back when people played more games.

Also in general.

Why not have two MMR-based systems then. A less volatile MMR/ELO/whatever system that doesn’t fluctuate as rapidly, and is visible to everyone and published on the leaderboard. Then along side that one, the GLICKO MMR (and the one used for matchmaking), which should also be published on the side, that shows perceived/potential MMR. Eventually if both systems are working properly, they should both come very close to each other in showing how each player performs in relation to other players.

This is a good option and would let us choose a system that better fits players’ needs without affecting matchmaking negatively.

Plenty of cool devs already come by Fort Aspenwood, and I don’t think I’ve seen you come by yet. Lawton came by as Helga. Devon is pretty much a regular as Citizen Snips. Even Gaile has been on FA a little bit.

Though in all honesty, I’d be just as happy to see you visit YB or SoS. I haven’t gotten to assassinate a dev yet. (Does the Anet tag show to enemies in WvW? I think I’ve never seen it on an enemy.)

Yes, the tag shows up if we are repping the guild. In fact, I got slaughtered on YB the other night. Pretty sure it was SoS doing the punishing. The tag is like a bullseye.

Where was I last night… erm? Ah, yes. FC. Pretty quiet over there but a good clean fighting squad there.

I probably won’t play on TC for a while as I was there on my play account for months; nor will I play on Maguuma with my GM as that’s my current play server (Toon: Engi; Madi Walker). (READ: I am NOT saying I won’t be working on those servers and continuing to monitor cheats).

Not sure where I’ll be tonight – Lego Worlds came out so, ya know. =)

How long does it take to settle? Could the leaderboards simply filter out players who don’t yet have X games? (Where X is 50 or 100 in my mind? More than enough time for folks to settle, I would think?)

Glicko settles pretty quickly, the problem is that it doesn’t always stay settled. If you leave the game for a while and come back, your next games could throw your rating all over the place again. A strict games played counter wouldn’t solve everything.

Similar to my suggestion above, could the LB just filter out players who don’t have Y games in the past 30 days? (Where Y could be 10, for example, I wouldn’t think it has to be large.)

We could. Do we want people coming and going from the leader board, but still having the same ‘skill’ level behind the scenes? Will people still just front load their games and afk? Not sure if a system we can actually decay is strictly better or not. I’m just a programmer :P

Our next Stronghold public beta begins in about an hour, and I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what has changed in the map since the last time you played.

As a reminder, Stronghold will be available in Unranked Arenas beginning today at 12pm Pacific time (one hour from this post, or 19:00 UTC) and will run for 24 hours (tomorrow at 12pm Pacific, 19:00 UTC). We’ll also be broadcasting tournaments for both NA and EU today, beginning at 12:30pm Pacific (19:30 UTC) at www.twitch.tv/guildwars2.

We’re looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the map! The ArenaNet team will be at work late tonight playing Stronghold – so jump into Unranked Arena and there’s a chance we might face each other on the battlefield!

  • Map Changes
    • A number of crates/boxes have been added inside the strongholds around the lord gate to provide opportunities for line-of-sighting.
    • Made a number of terrain changes.
    • Realigned the trebuchets to be able to hit the “Mist Essence” summoning areas.
  • Lord Updates
    • You can no longer resurrect the lord after the match ends.
    • You can no longer kill the enemy lord after the match ends.
    • When an opposing team’s lord is defeated, the winning team’s lord will now celebrate the victory with a cheer.
    • New skill: The lord will now execute an attack that pulls nearby enemies in, knocks them down, and then does a devastating 360 degree spin. Don’t let it hit you.
  • Lord Room Defending NPCs
    • The locations for the defending NPCs in each stronghold are now identical.
    • The defending NPCs in each stronghold have had their health increased by 10%.
  • Stronghold Guards
    • One set of guards (between the inner and outer gate) have been removed for a total of 4 guards.
  • Mist Essence
    • Mist Champions now spawn at the following minute marks: 12:00, 9:00, 6:00, and 3:00.
    • The 12:00 Mist Essence will now spawn nearest to the side that is behind on score.
  • General
    • Defending Npc names have been simplified from archer, soldier, ect. to all be called “Guards”
    • NPCs that cannot be resurrected lose their icon on the map after being defeated
    • The objective icons appear on the mini map upon entering the map, rather than when the match begins.
    • Trebuchets has been adjusted to make hitting important objectives easier
    • Red-side doorbreakers can no longer be summoned before dropping down from spawn.
    • Players holding max (2) supply can no longer pick up player dropped supply.
    • Players will drop any supply they were carrying when they are defeated
      • This means that if you have 2 supply and die you will drop 2 supply!

How long does /v2/items need to update?

Since we’re doing betas on live, we switched most of the auto-updating endpoints to use an explicit whitelist (wherein I have to click a button before stuff escapes publicly). That said, when you first posted I immediately checked the queue for the pumpkin bisque and it wasn’t there — but it was there this morning.

The way the /v2/items (and /v2/recipes, for that matter) interact with the actual game servers is by monitoring a best-effort event log. Messages get lost and delayed and what not (distributed systems whoo) so I’m guessing the pumpkin bisque just took awhile to land. Should be appearing on the /v2/items list now (+/- 5 minutes) though.

For the other ones, I’m not really sure. When they’re bought/sold on the TP they should end up in the queue. I’ll do some more investigating, but my current theory is that they’re exceptionally low-volume items (or ones that have never been actually traded) and, for whatever reason, just haven’t made it into the list of items on /v2/items.

I still don’t think using MMR directly is a good idea for a leaderboard, but I fully understand why people would want it: It is perceived as a better indicator of skill most of the time.

Here is why it doesn’t work well:
Random jumps: Glicko is used to make the best match possible. It does this by adjusting quickly which can result in very large jumps up and down before settling.
No Decay: We can’t decay MMR directly, which causes the problem of people sitting inactive at the top of the leaderboard.

Our best bet is to create a system that lives side-by-side with the Glicko MMR. The original system does its thing and makes good matches while the new one can be a new algorithm, or a filtered glicko algorithm to give us more friendly numbers without negatively affecting matchmaking.

You’re totally right — API keys aren’t usable for authentication. There’s really no way around that, since API keys provide symmetric authorization.

The strategy I’ve recommended to others is a kludge, but the most viable I can come up with: when you get an API key, resolve the account name and world via /v2/account, then bind the account name to the TS3 identity. If the account name has already been used, have the automated system fall back to the usual manual verification step (and de-authorize the account that was using that name). You can add in special process for having multiple TS3 identities with a single GW2 account (presumably people who need multiple idents will be few and well known within the community).

This prevents, at least, sharing API keys as it basically maps each GW2 account to a TS3 identity 1:1.

And maybe account age in the general account API.

Not formal plans, no, but it’ll probably make it in there at some point.

However, it would be nice if the information would not be until next year. Assuming that stand by the information already in a database, and so parts should already be made available from this database, it’s not too difficult to provide also the remaining information.

I can’t really comment meaningfully on our release timeline. The data doesn’t come from a database, per se, but is handled by multiple backend servers that have to be kept in-sync with the normal game release processes. Regardless, I’ll try to get everything out as soon as I can.

I like threads like this because we can nerd out about UI polish.

I agree nameplates should better display team colors and classes. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what profession someone is when they are wearing outfits, or you’re new to the game and haven’t learned all the spell effects yet.

By default, only your targeted or hovered players show nameplates. Is this still too in-the-way? The nameplates themselves don’t have mouse detection, things just have large interact radii. And when your’e ground targeting, you should be able to still click on the ground just fine through people, so maybe there’s a bug?

Is it planned to be able to read this information about the API and the best to even a character image, so you only need an API key and all the information of the members to be able to automatically display on the guild page.

In the long run, I hope to be able to provide all that information, given that you have an API key for each guild member.

I don’t think we’ll allow the guild leader’s API key to act as a skeleton key for their guild members. There’d have to be some kind of opt-in system for guild members, and at that point we might as well just stick to the key per-person approach.

I think those are all items that were at one point sold on the trading post. Not necessarily all items that can be traded.

Guys — so sorry for the long period of non-communication. No, I wasn’t abducted by aliens.

I have been traveling in Europe and return tomorrow. I miss all you guys immensely, but the Internetz on the cruise ship (it was a European river cruise) was sooooo terrible that every time I tried to post the entire thing disappeared. After throwing a dramatic hissy fit about the disappearance of another long (and of course worthwhile, well-written, and pithy!) post in the alleged-computer-lounge (where you might load one web page every 4 minutes, IF you were lucky) I decided to spare my fellow passengers further drama and determined that I should simply fire the forums back up (figurately, NOT literally ) when I’m back in the USA.

You should come hang with us down in the slums of rank 21… We made a comeback on Wednesday to take second place and then suddenly had someone doing stuff like building 10 golems in out garrison while it was being attacked. I wasn’t online at the time, but I know a few people reported them.

I don’t think I have ever seen an Anet tag on FC or the servers we fight.

I’ll drop in later today. =)

Yep, had no idea and can’t find it in the rules. I’m sure Gaile will flog me Monday morning.

The point of my post was to publicly announce that I was there; playing; and joining in the fun for both sides. YBBL has been asking for some ANet love and it didn’t seem fair to only hang with them.

The Human Male PC is still Nolan North, same as in the core version of GW2. Could you be more specific about what you mean when you say it sounds significantly changed?

Tonally, we did shoot for a terser, more urgent and in-command feel to the PC’s lines, as arriving on the scene of the Pact fleet wreckage is a much more intense situation than, say, bantering with Lord Faren at a party (as seen in the Human Noble Personal Story).

Do you plan a translation for Characters (lang=)?

Nah, those values are intended to be the string representation of numerical constants, i.e., meant for machine rather than human consumption. IMO, you should localize them in the application.
