Questions about Pricing and Payment [merged]
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I’ll see if we can give more than a wink and a nudge about this sometime soon.
I was thinking last night when I did one of the vistas — yes, I can’t get enough of vistas! — that I’m so looking forward to LA returning to its former beauty. On the other hand, I know how much the devs have on their respective plates, so I’m trying to be real patient.

Gems can be acquired by converting gold that is earned by playing the game into gems. Therefore, no, no payment of real-world money needs to be involved in the acquisition of gold or gems.
BUT… I am not an economic expert and I need to be sure I’m speaking correctly. Therefore, I will see if the good John Smith can verify my comment (or poke holes in it, as he is welcome to do if I’m full of beans.

I can see some BL skins in my Collections but not in my Wardrobe, but I’m not sure how I got those! I think it’s a bug that items appear in the collections but not in the wardrobe, I can’t remember if you could unlock BL skins in PVP before.
Its a bug with black lion collection achievements. Sometimes weapons unlock in the collection without owning them.
^ That’s correct. It’s an issue that we’re aware of. Apologies for any confusion caused by it.
I am deeply sorry to hear that Cyclenurse has passed away. All of us are grateful for her positive energy in the community and for her kind involvement with players, young and old.
Our thoughts and condolences are with her friends, family, and of course with her guild family, as well.

Gibson — please keep in mind that players earn gold in the game. We do not make money from gold acquired in that manner, it’s coming to them through normal gameplay solely with the purchase of the original game. I just want to be sure that I point out that gold does not necessarily indicate a purchase (for real money) of any kind, not by the player nor by anyone else.

We’ve combined a lot of posts about pricing, payment methods, and so forth into this one thread.
Please read the FAQ about Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns to get answers to some of the questions, and we’ll have more information in the future.
In the meantime, this is the best thread for posts about pricing, cost, etc.

Questions about Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

We’re so excited that we have announced Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, and we know that you have a lot of questions. Here’s what we have planned to get you a lot of information about our upcoming expansion:
- We’ll be doing “deep dives” on various features in the future. The first one in the series will most likely kick off in a couple of weeks. These features will give you a lot of the information you’d like to have.
- We will be looking at adding a few questions and answers to the HoT Frequently Asked Questions section of our Knowledge Base.
- We will have a lot of press coverage in the future, and will highlight those interviews and articles on our website, on social media, or through posts right here on the forums. (If you see an interview that hasn’t been posted about here, feel free to make a post so that others can enjoy a good read.)
- We will be present with our first playable demo, as you learned during the announcement, at PAX East (North America) and REZZED (EU) in March. I’m sure you’ll see a lot of info coming out in relation to those events.
We’d like to ask that you not submit a ticket to Customer Support with questions about Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. CS is not able to answer such questions, and CS needs to be able to concentrate on helping players with support issues.
Likewise, we respectfully request that you not send private messages to ArenaNet team members to ask about the expansion. Let’s let everyone focus on his or her job to get the expansion ready for you as soon as possible!
If you have questions, you can post them here, but your best bet for info really is through the sources listed above, and we invite you to keep your eye on those resources.
Thanks!

No matter what current method chosen, it is still light years away from your very comment that by level 80, players should have the best statistical loot in the game.
Yeah to be clear on that one, as we’ve said before: we made that statement before the game launched, ultimately realized we didn’t think it was the right decision for Gw2 – and changed our mind. I fully own making this statement, the day I said it was our plan – our lead designer decided it was the wrong direction for the game after we stated it, and we changed direction.
Sometimes plans will change, I can assure you it’s never our intention to intentionally mislead/trick anyone, that’s simply the nature of development: from time to time things we say at one point later have to change.
And now the post is up in the trait thread specifically to answer that point specifically. I’ll say by our definition of grind because you can purchase traits for skill points and gold which you can earn from different types of content and game modes OR play the content, this would not be considered a “grindy” system by our definition – but that doesn’t mean it’s right for Gw2’s future.
Hey folks,
Now that the HOT is out of the bag, we’re able to update this thread with more details. With the introduction of the new account based mastery system for end-game progression and growth in PvE, we’ll also be re-evaluating our other systems of character progression to ensure they match our over-all pillars and goals for Gw2.
In doing so: we’re going to be removing the current trait unlocking system currently on live and replacing it with a more simplified system that supports where skills-traits-specializations are going in the future. We’ll go into more details between now and the release of HOT on how skills, traits, and specializations will work in the new Gw2 world.
Thank you for all your passionate feedback on this topic – it not only helped our dev team lead to this decision, but has played a large role in helping us define how to build our exciting new account based mastery system for end-game progression in PvE as well.
Hey folks,
I just want to take a second to address this topic, because it’s something we state as one of our key philosophies – but don’t often clarify exactly what we mean we say it. And because everyone and their mother has their own unique interpretation of what grind can mean, it’s very simple for this to feel like we’re not following our own guidelines when we build and implement content.
When our company president said we have an anti-grind philosophy way back before Gw2 shipped, and when it has been repeatedly reinforced since then, our statement is simply: “We don’t think you should need to grind to get the best gear and stats in Guild Wars 2”.
So what exactly does that mean:
- The best gear/stats: This means to have statistically the best abilities in the game, you shouldn’t need to, by our definition of the word, grind. This goes for leveling and getting top gear (by our definition that’s ascended gear, legendary being an optional extra thing you can do, but don’t need to do.)
- Grind: To us, grind means being required to do the same boring activity over and over again. In particular, the biggest reference we’re talking about here in traditional MMO’s is having to kill the same creatures over and over again to farm for levels or gear. In Gw2, you can gain exp and levels from a massive variety of game play, game modes, and content types. Same goes for the ability to acquire the gear to build up your characters. Similarly, ascended mats can be acquired from a wide variety of content types and game modes to allow you choice and options so you don’t need to grind to complete those goals. Our new mastery system continues to this promise as well, which we’ll go into more detail on soon.
There are certainly optional activities in the game players can embark on that I think we’d openly accept fall into the category of our definition of more “grindy”. Earning certain unique skins, and in particular some titles absolutely qualify as things we’d put on this list. Legendary weapons have components to them that fall into this category, though we’ll be doing work in HOT to make this much less the case. We feel these are optional choices players don’t need to do, but can if they want, and because they are optional are acceptable within our statement that “Gw2 doesn’t make you grind to have the best gear/stats”. That doesn’t mean we can’t make those activities more fun as well, but when we say “no grind philosophy” we’re not including optional things you can do, but don’t need to do, in our definition.
Hope that helps a bit, that’s our philosophy and definition we’re going by when we make those statements. They may not align to your definition of grind, and that’s ok – we’re fine with that! It’s just important you know what we mean when we make that statement so you can make decisions about how you view Gw2 and judge us by our actions/words.
Thanks again for being so passionate about this topic and the game which ever side of the discussion you fall on. It’s something incredibly important to modern MMO’s and gamers in general, and we truly appreciate the dialogue you all are having on topics like this. It’s what makes better games for all of us.
This is actually proving my point.
I wouldn’t necessarly jump to that conclusion. The data could also be explained by the unique lord mechanic which can add 150 to your team’s score. Unfortunately I have no data on how often that happens.

#Gaile do you think that in the extended time, the countries that arent in the list, will get covered and will be able to buy the game through the paysafe card? Thanks for your patient.
As far as I know, they will not be able to expand the PaySafe list in the next 16 hours. I am very sorry, but that just does not seem possible at all.
I just tested it. The game i am trying to buy is for my brother so to see if this was my problem i tryed to do a gem purchace in game using paypal and it worked, so the problem is not with my account nor with paypal
Wow, that is very good information and may help us identify the issue. Thank you for that. Passing it along now.

You are right… I am from Romania, had no money on my personal bank account so i got 2 × 10 Euros Pay Safe Cards, for my girlfriend and a close friend(i was in debt to him).
It’s quite a lot of money, for the income here ( about 200 euros a month or so) so i feel kinda screwed now…any chance you can make it work in romania too?
You don’t have an option to transfer that money in you paysafe account to an Skrill account or paypal account ?
I can do that with my paysafe card and transfer my money to paypal or to skrill.
See if there is any option for you to do that!
I was wondering the same thing! If people could use the PaySafe as a deposit to a PayPal account, could they then purchase using PayPal?
I have asked our Billing/Payments Team, but on the surface it sounds as if it might work.

Here is what I learned. These are the only countries in which the PaySafe Card is a valid:
Germany
Spain
France
Great Britain
Austria
Belgium
Finland
Italy
Netherlands
If you attempted a purchase from within these countries using the PaySafe Card, your order should process properly. If you are outside these countries, the order will not process and we suggest that you try again using an alternative purchase method.

Hey, all,
Good news!
We will extend the sale until 9:00 AM Pacific time (5:00 PM/17:00 GMT) so that you are able to take advantage of the special sale price for Guild Wars 2.
Wait, are you saying that if we have not been sent our serial we are not entitled to the discount? I think you#ll find I have an invoice receipt from you stating we now own it… Therefore no matter when you get around to actually sending the code I expect to not be charged any extra, or you’ll find your in breach of a number of sales laws..
I am absolutely NOT saying that! We would never do that to you or anyone else. If we see the purchase in the system during the sales period, we’ll get it finalized and send you the serial code.
If you’ll peek just above this post, you’ll see I’m asking for details that will allow us to get you the code. We may not be able to get this processed today, but I intend to try. And if we can’t get it out to you because something happened in the order processing, we’ll work with you individually to do our best to make it right.

Hi, OP here – still not had any codes come through, or any reply to my support ticket.
Its been almost 12 hours now since the purchase was made…
I am unsure which situation applies to you: Did you not get a code? Or did you try to purchase with a PaySafe Card and the order didn’t process?
I have submitted a question about how the codes are going out. I am not sure if they’re going out in the order in which the purchase was made or in some other way. Will try to get that info for you.
My friend also made a purchase with iDEAL (Dutch way of payment), he hasn’t received any mail at all so far. He does have screenshots of his successful payment.
I am not aware of any issues with iDEAL. I have routed over a question on this.

Those are actually really small differences and I am pleasantly surprised at how close games are on average apparently. It does show that courtyard, and to a lesser extent foefire are outliers compared to the other maps. Also why no data on Nifhel?
The data is relative to Forest, and not actual numbers. We can be picky about which data should be shared, so I thought relative data would be safer to share w/o asking first. :P
Isle of Janthir: Flux, Latch, Aegir
I’m kinda curious, how similar are the numbers from unranked and the numbers from ranked?
The same but with a little variance. If you include hot-join the numbers become very different, but the order is almost the same.

Just dropping off some data.
Maps in order of mean difference between team scores in the last week of unranked arena.
- Forest of Niflhel
- Battle of Kyhlo +36
- Spirit Watch +40
- Temple of the Silent Storm +42
- Skyhammer +44
- Legacy of the Foefire +72
- Courtyard +124

As an employee I hope you already have access to the alpha/beta and can play it before it is released. At least that is how it should work. It would make sense for as many Anet personnel as possible to play it before it is released.
