PvP Unique Rewards (Keeping Casuals Invested)

There are certainly people who only want to play PvP competitively, and never care about PvE rewards. We are still working on systems that make those players feel rewarded, but right now all of our prestige rewards come from LAN tournaments. Reward tracks are geared more towards the larger audience.

I really like the idea of NPCs walking around to show off the armor. I certainly noticed that in Silverwastes.

I think one problem of reward tracks right now is their discoverability. We released the Maguuma Jungle Region reward track with Dry Top, and it gives you keys for chests, geodes for the unique items on vendors, and new skin components. I personally love this reward track being intertwined with PvE as it creates a great reward loop, but not many people seem to know about since it just appeared and looks like any other region track.

The new PvP exclusive armor track was also since reward tracks released, but I’m not sure how many players know about it.

I’m sure there are ways to solve the discoverability problem. Our main mechanism right now is feature highlights on release pages, but those aren’t in-game anywhere. Perhaps a story-journal style unlock that alerts you to each new reward track release would be more effective.

lakdav — it’s not necessarily “re-artifying” the items, but optimizing art if an item is resized.

Sometimes players think that a miniature is simply a resized piece of art from the game, like a skritt or an NPC. But in fact each miniature involves some level of new or re-optimized art. I like to share details because I think that a lot of folks don’t realize how what looks like “a simple fix” really does involve more than it first appears.

Hi John,

The following statement that you made in the RNG thread made me wonder at what time during the development process you started working for Anet.

In the same manner that my thousands of forges and thousands of hours played feel without ever getting a precursor, so does the Halloween raffle feel having handed in up to 1k tickets and winning nothing (while others who hand in 2 to 3 tickets win).

I understand why it can happen, but that doesn’t make the experience feel any better. It just leaves you with a very bitter taste. You can talk about this all you want, but I consider that it is – bluntly put – your job as game designers to prevent this from happening to me and many, many others like me, over and over and over again.

For the most part, I agree with you.

Early 2012.

Thanks Gaile! This was a few months ago, but I used the email address listed on the Content TOU page, community@arena.net. It created a ticket and everything, I just never saw a response.

The primary reason behind this is to eliminate the potential for impersonation of these characters and/or an ArenaNet employee. Some of the more pronounced character names were already in our naming filter for this reason (such as Ogden, Kormir, Vizier Khilbron, etc.), but other character names that we thought were in the filter actually were not. This action was set in motion to create that consistency across all prominent NPCs from both Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.

I’d rather get permission than have to play games with Fair Use laws.

I respect that, particularly since I have worked with attorneys for years and from what I understand, most of us non-legal types don’t really understand “fair use.” For instance, someone told me once “If you change XX%, you can use assets.” Not true, there is no “set percentage” for that sort of thing.

The best thing is to do is analyze the project, as I said above, and if this is for single, non-profit use, to see that the CToU clearly allows that.

Gaile-

That said, awhile back I was trying to get a few custom-printed mugs with our guild logo on them. One for me, one for my girlfriend, and one for a giveaway to guild members. The logo got caught in a copyright filter. I directed the company to your legal page, but they told me I needed authorization.

You have an email address for the purpose and I sent an email there, but I never heard back.

We’re in the process of doing a guild t-shirt contest, but I have the same worries: will our art assets (probably the Quaggan image from the API with a unicorn horn added and our guild motto #getunicorned) get flagged? And if they do, will somebody’s hours of work creating the design go to waste because we can’t get a quick “this is okay” from the email address you guys have left?

Anyway, just a minor concern I thought might be appropriate to mention. I know there’s a real “it’s not ArenaNet’s job to okay fan art” problem here, butcomeonquagganwithaunicornhatsooooocuteanetplz.

Hmmm. We want to help! What e-mail address are you using?

Hey all,

The dev team has been tracking the concern about the Engineer backpacks for quite a while. They understand our players’ point of view, and this is something that a few different team members have discussed for a possible remedy. They’ve batted around a few ideas about how to fix this problem, including some of those mentioned in this thread. (Thanks for all the suggestions – they’re very helpful!)

For example, one designer thought that with new art, we might be able to display the kits on the weapon holsters on the right or left hip, so players could tell what kits are in use while allowing the Engineer to display a sweet back-piece, too. Another suggested that perhaps Gem Store items could simply override the kits, so if you owned a Quaggan Backpack, your character displayed a Quaggan Backpack. (Please note: This doesn’t mean to say that either of these ideas will be the one that is settled upon. I just offered examples so you could see that thoughts and possible solutions definitely have been discussed.)

Ultimately, enabling any correction will involve members of several different teams (design, art, programming) and those teams members currently are engaged in other prioritized projects. But as you can see, the team wants to address this situation in the future and we’re grateful for your patience while the team selects the implements the right fix for the issue.

This CDI will move on to the proposal stage tomorrow so get your top three in please folks.

Chris

With all respect, I don’t think we can put together a proposal that accurately represents what the community is looking for without first having the logistics conversation we touched on earlier in this thread -

Let’s allow for more foundational discussion and then we can discuss two raid group sizes in terms of pros and cons.

Does that sound ok?

Chris

This is even more evident when you look back through the “top three” posts and note how many times people reference flexibility, accessibility and even scaling (despite being told it was set numbers). So this definitely isnt just one person (me) making noise. It is something that needs to be a part of any proposal.

I get that you are opposed to scaling (even though, if done in a limited fashion, I think it could work). That is why I proposed a different model – developing raids sizes of 8 and 12 concurrently. That way, as long as you have a minimum of 8, you would never need to find more than 3 people to fill out a raid group.

So the pros and cons of two raid group sizes:

The Pros

  • People aren’t left out of organized raid nights because of logistics (math)
  • Raids are accessible to everyone – the only limiting factor becomes skill.
  • In line with the early vision of the game – fun, friendly environment where friends can play together.

The Cons

  • Longer development cycles
  • Makes it (VERY slightly) harder to balance difficult fights in the development phase

To put it simply, the pros outweigh the cons. Accessibility should be more important than both logistics and development time. If it takes you a month or two longer to add in a second size to accommodate the player base better, then I think many of us would GLADLY wait that time. Do it right the first time – give us raids, but give us ALL raids.

So if I have a raid night where i have two groups – one of 15 and the other with the remaining 8 (as an example), they are going to have the same chances to beat the encounters if the players involved are at roughly the same skill level?

If that is true, then I’m happy. That would be putting skill at a more important level than numbers.

So this is a very clever question which does need to be answered regardless of raid number sets. If it’s ok though let’s discuss it when we get to raid number set discussions.

Chris

This is another issue we haven’t addressed (even though 2 raid sizes would address it well).

I know this takes away from the 3-point post, but it is something we agreed to readdress prior to the proposal phase.

I would hate to see raid development move forward and turn into something that feels, not just unfriendly, but completely different from the rest of the game. You have a dedicated player base that LOVES this game (with me at the very top of the list). Raiding can be done – but it needs to be done in the same spirit with which you’ve approached the game as a whole.

Sorry Blaeys but the CDI did not run its course due to lack of maturity and lack of collaboration. I am therefore asking folks for their thoughts based on what we did discuss.

Chris

Guhracie — we are trying for the “happy medium” that you suggested even while right now we are not in a position to talk about some things that are quite visibly on our players’ minds.

Torsailr — Thank you for your constructive sugggestions. As a matter of fact, one of the key projects that I’ve been tasked with since I became Forum Communications Team Lead is assessing forum software, and the “voting” feature is one that I find very intriguing and believe could be quite useful for us.

tigirius — I’m actively pursuing info in relation to that thread, as you’ve probably noticed. Can’t say what I’ll learn, but the issue is clear and I hope for information to share.

Robert — Interesting idea. I’m investigating things along similar lines, actually.

In general I’m going to see if we can answer some of the major threads — both older and recent. But please know that with a busy team involved in a lot of projects, and most of them very time-critical, it’s not always possible to shift resources to address a particular issue. The fact is, sometimes it’s not even reasonable to ask for a detailed status report. (And again, I do know how frustrating that can be.)

And having said all that, this thread does seem to be heading down a rather off-topic and unnecessarily negative path, and we need to close it. We’d appreciate not seeing resurrections of this topic, when it has been addressed often in the past and to the degree that we’re able to address it right now.

Perhaps adding “Harassment, verbal or non verbal” to the list of options would be appropriate. Thanks

Hi Zach. The “non-verbal” makes me ponder, and really, the best way to handle non-verbal harassment — anything that would be impossible to find in chat logs — is to submit a ticket. (I’m really not sure what would define “non-verbal harassment” but the team could at least review the ticket to figure that out.)

Players have suggested that we expand the list of issues that they can report in the game. At the present time, the team is focused on developing some really cool behind-the-scenes tools that will allow us to better support our players. In the future we may be able to look at expanding the in-game report system. In the meantime, for issues of harassment of a verbal nature, please choose offensive chat and the report will be reviewed as soon as possible.

Some of the chapter 8 steps were moved to chapter 7, which is why they’re now L70. The game scripts check to see which steps you’ve done, so you don’t have to duplicate steps. Normally, “Victory or Death” might be next, but you never completed “Against the Corruption” so you’ll have to complete it (and any followup steps) before it puts you on the final step. It’s a little odd to go back to L70 steps, but we didn’t want players who were already on Chapter 8 when the steps got moved around to miss any content.

We absolutely adore fan art, fan projects, Machinimas, videos, and the whole lot! We love them, we often share them internally and with our fans, we offer a forum to host them… yep, yep, they’re great!

The difference between “it’s ok” and “it may be disallowed by copyright” comes down to how the assets will used. It’s pretty much a simple question: “Is this personal and non-profit?” Whether a video or a t-shirt, a single use of the assets for non-commercial purposes is great. (And sure, a video is going to be seen by a lot of people—so that might raise a question about “personal use”—but the video would be ok unless someone were to create a gated, pay-per-view video.)

Concerns and copyright issues arise when someone designs clothings, toys, books, or other items with the intent to sell them. Basically, profiting from the work of another — be it a writer or a software developer — is strictly protected by international copyright law.

But again, non-profit fan projects are wonderful and perfectly fine, as expressed in the CToU.

This Friday on Ready Up (12PM PST @ www.twitch.tv/guildwars2) I’ll be joined by various members of World Tournament Series finalist teams the Civilized Gentlemen and the Abjured. The show will be an AMA (ask me anything) of sorts, with the players fielding the questions.

Most things are fair game, including meta, builds, balance, WTS, ESL, strategy, favorite color, recent performances, etc. I feel like this is pretty obvious, but I’m going to mention it anyways – our guests are not developers, and cannot answer questions on development.

Here’s the list of guests:

Phantaram
Denshee
Magic Toker
Chaith
ROM
Ostrich Eggs

I’ll be pulling questions from this thread and from stream chat so feel free to ask away.

Thanks,

Grouch
