Clarification on queuing in HotM:
Joining a queue will redirect you to the lobby. If you leave the lobby you will also leave the queue, but not get dishonor. You only get dishonor if you decline the match-ready prompt.

Gw2 is a huge game and players could be doing any number of things that would prevent them from accepting a match. Players could be watching a cinematic, talking to a scout, or the biggest problem: stuck on a load screen. We can’t let people on load screens get dishonor because they can’t accept the match.

For these reasons we want everyone in HotM while queued. We’re taking multiple steps to make waiting as little a burden as possible. We’ve added service NPC’s to the lobby, and the new matchmaking should be making matches much quicker than before. If a better solution arises, we will surely jump on it, but right now we balanced the trade offs as best we could.

They are not reasons or justifications to mass report. They are a symbol of people creating their own solutions where there are none.

That is not a “solution”. Reporting everyone in the guild doesn’t change the fact that the only people who can issue bans here are ArenaNet staff.

It just means they have even more bans to hand out – on the people doing the false reporting.

For map voting, is there a “random” or “I don’t really care which map” option, similar to Mario Kart track selection?

If you don’t pick a map, there will just be 9/10 selection that are rolled on.

What do we do to tend to trolls or spies who are burning supplies by building rams in the middle of no where near supply locations?

There is a line in the Tos/Eula/Tos or somewhere that states it is a violation to degrade the experience for other players (close guess paraphrasing here.) How do we draw attention to this?

When I played games like EQOA, they had a tab in the report/bug panel for this and GMs showed up very very quickly. It was also made well known that you could be very easily suspended for false reports, to limit that.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

There was recently a big incident (Halloween) where a player was griefing others who were farming ambients. They suspended/banned (not sure which) the guy. This is clearly precedent for punishing griefers (siege trolls, supply drainers) in WvW.

The only question is, this is WvW, not PvE so will anything be done? Likely not.

Your pessimism across multiple threads is just going to cause people to tune you out. This thread has been constructive and we’ve no room for the negative tone. I’ve made it clear I’m working on (not just talking about) the problem and your sarcasm is insulting and unwelcome.

  • We respectfully beg to differ. If the game isn’t lacking direction, then why won’t you at least share it with your concerned players? To hell with the policy… we want to know where the game is going. Gaile, put yourself in our shoes for a minute — wouldn’t you want to know too?

I understand and sure, as a player, I’d like that info. But that isn’t what the company is doing right now, and we all know, under it all, that someone saying “to hell with policy” isn’t a professional stance to take. This is where we are right now. Not forever, but right now.

I fully and completely understand the frustration. I truly comprehend that players would like us — someone, anyone! — to “open the floodgates” on information. That’s not in the cards. However, I have some ideas that I am going to float internally to see if we can say a bit more while honoring the overall communications policy. I wouldn’t propose that we answer “the big questions” in a forum post, but I know that forum members are some of our most passionate and connected players and I do wonder if we can offer some information. Outcome of this decision is TBD, naturally.

  • CJ must be ruing his announcement (last year?) in a vid on youtube, about precursor crafting before the end of 2013. Disregard the fact that it was announced to people looking forward to this particular feature that it wouldn’t make it in the feature patch that it was supposed to be released with — in the interview it shouldn’t have been discussed at all.

Ah, but see what you did there? I think, basically, you said something should not have been discussed until its implementation was absolutely confirmed. And isn’t that what the current policy states? We do not engage in a lot of predictive chatter about things that may not come; we reveal something — a feature, a fix, something new — when it’s assured. Not “this may happen” but “this will happen.”

The latest feature packs have been broken from the start, and no attempt has been made to either fix them or at the very least communicate with us why there is such a major delay in fixing them+*.

This is a sweeping statement that is difficult to analyze. Which feature pack. What specific element is broken? How is it broken? Are you certain that whatever was broken remains broken? (IOW, are you tracking bug fixes, etc?)

If you’re saying “the whole thing is broken” I’m going to call that hyperbole and move on. If you can detail exact, quantifiable elements that were and remain broken, I’m all ears! Because I can try to track things down if given sufficient details, but I surely can’t go into a room and say “stuff’s broken” and expect to get the information that you’d like to have, and that I’d like to share. (Please don’t post details in this thread. If you’d like to report the issues, would you please do so in the Bugs Forum? I will look for a thread if you care to share it!)

I really hope the dishonor degrades quite fast. Like, a DC once or twice a week will only result in 5-10 minute timeouts each time.

This is exactly how it works. A clean record will only get a few minute timeout for queue dodging, and disconnects are about fifteen minutes, starting from when you disconnected. If you reconnect and keep playing, you’ll already have waited out some of the time by the end of the game.

This change means that anyone can queue their party for ranked or unranked arenas, which will prompt the other party members to confirm.

What will happen if a teammate is on a loading screen?
What will happen if a teammate declines?

The invites work like party invites. The party queue request will be waiting when they finish loading. Rosters also aren’t entered into the queue until everyone has finished loading into the lobby so no one should get match pops they can’t accept.

If a teammate declines the invite, they party must attempt to re-queue. If a party member declines a match pop, the entire party is kicked out, but only the one member will receive dishonor.

Regarding people AFK in-match: The dishonor system is much more flexible now in a way where we can add different severity penalties to any action. We’ve discussed tying dishonor to conduct reports, but we have not decided on anything.

It is still the case that if someone is kicked for being afk, they receive disconnect dishonor.

3 days and 4 pages with no reply have Gaile forsaken us?

Never! I was in England for a few days. Lots and lots of meetings, and I’m sorry I wasn’t able to post too much while I was away!

The whole lack of direct communication now has me feeling like the direction of the game itself might be in limbo and that is worrisome. Isn’t it odd that all these new hires and ads for specific people (one would associate with expansion like content) have hit so far down the road, 2 years in? I think to be honest the silence is a way to keep us all distracted from the truth, LS and rehashed holiday content is all that is on the horizon for a very long time and if they do lay out the roadmap the fear is that many will simply walk away and stop supporting the game.
Think about it and tell me you don’t draw the same conclusions at this point. Why the silence, why the lack of a roadmap, why the lack of specific answers regarding things like dungeons, classes, traits, races?

Ok, here’s some info on these specific comments:

  • No, the game is not lacking direction. Nor is it lacking vision or goals, plans, ideas, concepts, or any of the other properties that guide our future. The quiet now is not an indicator of anything other than the fact that, at this time, the company is not talking about the future but is, instead, working on it.
  • Game companies, like most major industries, experience a certain level of turnover, and hire to fill those spaces. They also hire for new or expanded roles. Nothing startling here whatsoever.
  • The silence is decidedly not a distraction effort. As Mike O’Brien said, "We’ve set a clear policy in the past year: “We don’t talk speculatively about future development. We don’t want to string you along. Creating fun is an uncertain business: sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t; sometimes we go back to the drawing board over and over before we get something right. If we make optimistic promises and then can’t deliver on them, everyone suffers. So when we attend a trade show or give an interview, we’re there to talk about what we’re getting ready to ship, not to speculate on what we might ship someday.”
  • Living World and holidays are important, yes. They are not the only thing on which the team is working, quite clearly, when you see substantial updates coming out on a regular basis. (Case in point: feature packs, the coming PvP update, etc.)
  • We are not “afraid” to lay out a roadmap. Quoting Mike again, “The intention of the CDI threads is to talk with you about the roadmap.” If you’re not participating, you’re missing out on a means of sharing your feedback and a method that we may use to give information, when the time is right.
  • No, we’re not fearful of player reaction to our plans; we’re simply choosing a different path in communicating in the here and now.
  • In general, with nearly anything, there are ebbs and flows in communication. If we’re in an ebb right now, you can count on there being a flow in the future. That’s just logical.

I hope it’s not in this way because it’s very very heavy.

You queued as a warrior, we found a match for a warrior, using your warrior MMR. It wouldn’t be fair to others if we let bypass matchmaking rules, and it opens the door for exploits.

If the full loss for small disconnects becomes an issue, feel free to bring it up again and we can talk about less severe deterrents. As John mentioned, this is an experiment and we’ll be looking at the data and community reaction.

That’s an insane requirement given that some teams (teamq) run less than optimal comps for the sake of fun, but when they see a real team they swap classes. What you’re essentially putting is a barrier to always play serious which results in teams steamrolling other players and rather than building a stronger pvp community you get more people discouraged from playing.

I get you, the matchmaking system will do much more to prevent awkward compositions.

If you want full control over comp you must form a party. Evan’s post tomorrow (today for you, maybe?) will explain how we’ve simplified and improved the process. I hope it helps.

Yeaa same here…. I play on a very crappy internet and PC, hopefully arenanet can tell if its DC or rage quit. Like giving 5 min to come back would be reasonable, that’s what it takes to reset the PC and stuff.

Sorry, but if you leave for any reason you’ll get dishonor, no matter the length of time. Even the shortest interrupts can have significant impact on the quality of the game for the other players.

Unfortunately there is no real way that I’m aware of to detect real disconnects from someone ripping out their Ethernet cable and setting it on fire in a fit or rage induced passion.

As usual though, if there is good reason too, we’ll take the time to look at this again. I can’t promise any we’ll take any action though.

oooo. eh, is the beta ladder based on ratings?
as in, players with higher rating will be near the top etc.

Not based on ratings at all, other than compensating for uneven matches by increasing risk and reward in ladder points.

so if someone stops actively gaining rating, they will eventually be pushed downwards by other players climbing up the ladder with their increasing rating due to more active winnings.

It’s possible to keep climbing higher and higher the more you play. How fast depends on your win/loss ratio and who you play against.

If you have a high win/loss ratio but constantly play against lesser skilled opponents you may find those with lower win/loss ratios passing you because they’ve been successful in matches that were more challenging.

The biggest thing driving the upward trend is the ability to not lose points, or even gain some, when you lose a close match.

I know how it works in simulations, and I’m really excited to see how it works in the real world.

Any change on that?

we temporarily lose ladder points when we don’t play and we’ll re-get the same amount when we play 1 game? Or do you have changed something?

i’m guessing decay will cause position in the leader board / ladder to drop, but the actual ratings will remain unchanged.

does that sound reasonable?

that’s my guess though.

The beta ladder will not include any decay, and may not need any. We want to wait and see before making a decision for future ladders.

‘Hotjoin’ is custom arenas. Some are player owned, some we own. ‘Practice’ is the same as ‘Play Now’ and is still ‘hotjoin’.

There are no functional changes to custom arenas. However all match logic has be re-written from scratch, so any changes we do want to make will be easy.

do the rewards get better or worse with the -3 / +3 rating change?

for example, in terms of gold rewards,

rating / gold
-3 = 10 silvers (equivalent to hotjoin lose)
-2 = 12.5 silvers (equivalent to solo arena lose)
-1 = 15 silvers (equivalent to team arena lose)
0 = 25 silvers (equivalent to solo arena win)
+1 = 30 silvers (equivalent to team arena win)
+2 = 60 silvers
+3 = 1 gold

Yes. Team Arena and Solo Arena stats will combine to create your new Ranked Arena stats. However, your old Team and Solo stats can still be seen in the PvP panel.

What will happen to my current SoloQ and TeamQ Glicko2-rating?

Will it get reset on the 2nd of December, or at the start of the season on 16th?

Your Team Arena mmr will migrate to Ranked Arena when the new build comes out, otherwise we will not reset mmr.

We (ANet) recently caused some confusion about the exploites@arena.net address but it is indeed the place you’ll want to send the info.

Aww, “hater” – I am just speaking from experience, both with mails to the customer support and this. I had him on my block list so I could see when he was logged on – for months after my reports/emails.

So there will only be a " Ranked Q" instead of solo Q and team Q. I was wondering if the wins/losses accumulated on both leaderboards will be either merged , reset or completely deleted for the new system ?

Your record of solo and team arena wins/losses will be kept and migrated over to ranked arena.

Your rank on the leaderboard will be reset.

Is it also an individual Glicko2-Rating Algorithm per profession?

It’s calculated exactly the same.

Do I have the same MMR in ‘unranked’ as I have in ‘ranked’? F.e. if I have a high MMR on my mesmer in ranked, will I automatically have a high MMR in unranked? Are both values exact the same?

No, profession ratings, like the core rating, are per rating type. Unranked and Ranked each have their own rating type exclusive to them.

I still have a concern about multiple same professions on an account having different MMR. If all I have to do to game the system on a Warrior is just roll a different Warrior, then that is an issue for sure.

No, it’s profession specific, but not character specific. Your warrior rating will be the same no matter what warrior you’re on.

we are now reporting every member of a guild should it have members that have been caught.

Do NOT do this! False reports make getting to legitimate reports take longer and in a cheating report there is a very short window for our GMs to react. Actions like this (false reporting) will lead to your account being terminated.

Just to clarify, that counts for each individual person instead of that team as a whole? For example, GuardianBob’s odds of victory could be 0-19% while his partner MesmerJoe could be 20-39%. Or are both player’s odds of victory the same?

The odds are for the entire team. They also compliment the enemy’s odds, i.e. your team’s odd + the enemy team’s odds = 100%.

Isn’t possible to give players a choice? Some box where they can tick to either choose a fast match, or a quality match that will take however possible.

There are several ways we might be able to do something like that, but there is no way they will be available with this build. I also don’t know if it be would be wise to split the queue like that. I’ll look into it, but can’t promise anything.

You can set your kebind to any key (F11→Control Options→Dodge[V by default]) and map that key (V) to your Naga; but you can’t macro it to double-tap a key to dodge in a particlar direction.

With the allowed bind you will be able to use your right hand to dodge while still using WASD for the direction.

Also, since queues can be a bit of issue right now, how goes the other quality of life changes. Did you guys implemented stuff like the gw2 icon flashing when there is a match found, for the people that alt tab? Ala league of legends.

Oh, this is a very important one.

While I’ve been hoping that players would have to play as the character they queued with (allowing us to get profession-based MMR) for a while – you say that we have to stay in the PvP lobby while queueing? There’s pretty much nothing to do in HotM right now, and I doubt that this is going to change anytime soon.

Since a fair number of players alt-tab while queueing already, and this is only likely to increase if we can’t faff about in PvE doing world bosses or whatever… we need some way to find out if our queue has popped without player-side workaround (like running gw2 in windowed mode and resizing other application windows to keep an eye on the game).

What I mean is, I enter the match on my garbage Thief. We are waiting for the match to begin. I then swap to my really good Ranger. How is that handled?

one of the key takeaways I’m getting from this thread is that, at least for now, if you cannot click on the cheater or otherwise get their name you cannot report them.

it doesn’t matter if you can’t identify them because they are underground, or because they are using invisibility hacks, or because they teleported away before you thought to click on them, or if you can’t report them for zoom hacks because they are behind a wall and you would have to be using zoom hacks yourself to see who they are.

I hope this gets fixed at some point. we do need some kind of “help! I’m being victimized by a cheater and I don’t know who or where!” option.
