Thank you all for making the first CDI topic discussions such a good start. The next phase as mentioned at the start of the initiative is for us to discuss how we could better evolve the process around CDI. The key areas for me personally are as follows and based on my interactions on the PVE thread:
1: More focused Topics.
2: Summaries of discussion/direction every three pages.
3: More time to post.
Please know the expectation isn’t for you to list your top three, this is just how I did it. This is a discussion primarily and next Monday I will post the actions so we can evolve the CDI best working practices immediately.
Thanks again for your involvement,
Chris

Sylvari females have and always have had their own vocal (guttural) set.
Each of the sounds for guttural types used between the various races are recorded by different actors but with similar deliveries—hence there is some stylistic resemblance between sylvari female and human female within a given action. Especially so between human and sylvari because they also share sound cue timings since they’re animated so similarly. But each player type definitely has a unique set of sounds.
That’s what I thought too — about the different actors — therefore I always repored it as a sound bug. But after a while, I wanted to “check” it myself. That’s why I extracted the audio files. After a bit of “searching” I found the “guttural” sound sets. Being extracted in one “line-up”, it was easy to listen to all of them for all races. And please believe me Cody, as I reached the sylvari set, there were some files from the human set (again) (including the above-mentioned sounds).
Besides the sylvari do sound different than the humans. Higher in tone. I don’t now, if Jennifer Hale and April Stewart performed the vocal sets themselves, but they sure sound different. If you say, Cody, that every actor performed a whole set, than some sylvari sounds are simply not in the game. Or let’s just say, I did not find them, where they had to be and they won’t activate.
Hm, it appears there is some overlap between human female and sylvari female, but it is asset-duplication/renaming and so its not a bug that is causing this, nor is it immediately apparent without digging up the raw, uncompressed sound files and listening to them side-by-side. Difference is, I don’t have to pull apart the .dat file to do it, and so I can be more accurate. Although I don’t have much time to devote to this, it’s worth looking into rather than let the discussion die.
So it is also very rare that this is the case for sylvari female. By far, most of the guttural sets are, in fact, quite unique for the character, and for all others for that matter. However, a little reuse is not entirely a bad thing either, and it was done for good reason—clearly there just aren’t unique assets for the sylvari female in some very rare cases. But it is quite uncommon, the cases where reuse occurs are on some emotes that the players cannot trigger on demand, some sounds which have been made obsolete and are not in use, and some small animations used in a skill here and there and are on longer cooldown, such as the first portion of Engineer Rifle #4, Jump Shot (but not the second portion, the descent/landing), and yes, just a couple of the death sounds in the pool are reused. But there is no reuse in jumping sounds at all between human and sylvari female.
For the cases where reuse happens on player skills or common animations, something can likely be done at some point to make the sylvari female (and other race/genders, if the same is true for them) more unique from the human female, in terms of animation timing and the guttural sets chosen for the skills so that they aren’t reused. If you can think of any other cases than the ones you mentioned that you think are particularly egregious, do reply to this thread.
Thanks for taking the time to post about it.
Thanks for the nice comments guys.
Here are some “behind the scenes” facts about this cinematic:
The cinematic was built as a prototype for the new video playback technology.
It was made over a year ago, and we planned to launch it with the original Fractal release. Unfortunately, the tech didn’t get implemented in time and we missed the release window. It was decided that we sit on the cinematic trailer until there was a big update to the Fractals.
The 3D character models are (pre)rendered in-engine with our model viewer and matched up with cameras in Maya and After Effects.
While I have special place in my heart for the original GW2 in-engine cinematics (such as the Dugneon Catacombs flashback…a cinematic that I reworked 4 times over the course of development) These new types of pre-rendered videos allow us to work faster, increase the quality, and they perform better on more peoples machines.
There are some pretty exciting cinematics coming in the future…I hope you guys will receive them as well as the Fractals piece.
Thanks again!

Kthanks.

Great idea! Thanks for putting this together for our community Ken. /bow
Greetings all,
We’ve moved all the fractals change threads into one thread so the Dev Team can find all your feedback in one place. Please remember to stay on-topic and keep personal attacks against your fellow players and our staff off the thread.

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you all know that I’m looking into this. Any specific information about the circumstances under which the music initially triggered would be very helpful. Things such as your character’s race, profession, the map you were in and any events that you were participating in at the time (or if you were just killing creatures in the open world). Listing your audio settings would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you for the reports!

True, I haven’t. But they’re pretty weak to conditions and can’t usually bunker a point plus they have a high skill-cap so most people who play them play them poorly. Combine that with a condition/bunker meta and you have a recipe for a net team loss.
I think you misunderstood. I love Mesmer, but I suck at Mesmer. -1 may be insufficient when I’m playing.
I know this is a joke…but at the same time i find this disturbing coming from a Dev.
:P Don’t worry, we’ve got several very good players in PvP, and I think everyone on the skills and balance team cheats (not really) because they are all really good.
I keep meaning to practice, honest.

I wanted to post to say that I have been asked to lead a class here at ArenaNet, and I’ve had to focus my attention on that over the last few days. Please do know that I will review this thread tomorrow and that I will get to each of the requests with an update as soon as I can!
By the way: If you requested a gem refund in relation to the change of infinite gathering tools from soulbound to account-bound status, you can count on us taking care of you, but the numbers of such requests are high. We’re delighted with the game update that fulfilled so many player requests, and we ask for just a bit more patience on this particular issue. I hate to say “The money is in the mail” but saying “The money soon will be in the mail” is spot on.

I just bought a second gw2 account.
Can I link the two accounts so that when I send items to the second account for storage that A-net does not think I’m selling items or something?
Or will it be safe to just have two separate accounts that sends items back and forth for storage?
There is no reason you cannot do this. We can’t link two GW2 accounts, but many players share between their accounts — it’s just fine.

As you probably are aware, with the release of “The Nightmare Within” update on November 12, 2013, newly-purchased infinite gathering tools are now account bound. This is a great change, and one that was much-requested by our players.
Soulbound infinite gathering tools can be exchanged for account-bound versions through the Black Lion Weapons Specialists. These NPCs can be found near the Black Lion Traders in every city that hosts a Trading Post. For example, in Lion’s Arch the Black Lion Weapons Specialists are located on the second floor and can be reached by taking either stairway adjacent to the Black Lion Traders. Note: Be sure to un-equip any infinite gathering tools before speaking to a Black Lion Weapons Specialist because these items cannot be exchanged if they are equipped.
Now for those of you who purchased, say, four of the exact same item for the use of four different characters, we will be happy to give you a gem refund for any multiple items you have of a specific type. For instance, if you purchased three Molten Mining Picks to be used by three different characters, you should convert one of those picks to an account-bound item for use by any character on your account. Upon deletion of the second and third Molten Mining Pick, we will issue a gem refund for the additional Molten Mining Picks you no longer require. So again, the first of any specific infinite gather tool must be converted — we will refund gems only for duplicates of the duplicate named item.
If you would like to receive a gem refund for your extra soulbound infinite gathering tools of a certain type, please contact Support. Visit the “Support” tab at the top of this page, then choose “Submit a request” and choose “In-Game Issue.” Fill in the form, and in the section that says “Issue – No selection” select “In-Game Item” and then “Other.” Explain what items you currently possess and a support agent will guide you through the conversion and gem refund process.

so i will always get on the least played class to get a fast q pop / get on the good team and then swap before match starts?
Yep, we’ll definitely have to worry about things like this. My hope is that we can find and solve these things together. Really looking forward to it.

Thank you for the report, Alice. I’ll see what I can do, they shouldn’t be showing up in the repeatable at all
Thanks for bringing this up. This led to a discovery of a set of criteria that would cause footsteps to not play for certain footwear. I’ve made a fix to some audio scripts which should recover it across the board, so this fix should get out to you soon.
It’s a shame that you’re experiencing this on such an expensive, prestigious piece of armor though! Hang in there.
I’d swear my Male Asura Engineer has a single Female Norn guttural sound accidentally cross-linked. He has one grunt I am certain is pulling from the wrong set.
If you can find a reliable way to get that mismatched sound to play, like a specific skill or action, then do tell. Something like that should definitely be fixed.
ye i understand this but how this point system should work?
i mean whats wrong with engi defending homepoint and another engi make farpointassaulter?
I doubt we’d do anything that fine grained. We just want to prevent making teams that are all warrior or all bunker, etc..
and plz understand im not against this^^ i just throw in my arguments
before its to late^^
Don’t worry, I’m going to make a blog post and forum discussion about it before we make any final decisions. I’m also designing the system so it can be tweaked without having to go through our normal release cadence.

how i said before overpopulated classes in soloQ should be fixed by balancing team and not a filter
The scoring system I mentioned is not a filter. We don’t want to force players to play something else in order to play, we just want to provide as much balance as we can given the population at any point in time. This could mean a couple things that some people won’t like, especially during low concurrency, matches may resemble what they are currently and professions that are very popular will wait in line a bit longer than everyone else.

However from what I hear there are people in EU who know how to check their solo queue roster. They could easily ask a teammate what’s on the other team before entering and adjust that way – something to look into.
Already got you covered. We’re not even going create a game instance until everyone has committed.

Hey guys,
We’re aware that the issue is still present and are working on a fix.
Sorry for any inconveniences caused by this!
This could push some players away from PvP as they like to log onto other characters to PvE while the queue pops – forcing them to sit in queue and do nothing isn’t a very good system.
We would give you a window of time to allow you to change characters. You just wouldn’t be able to do it after committing.

And what about the rerolls? People will still be able to reroll another class or change their build before the game start? Or, do you want to block professions/builds composition after people click “go now” ?
This is something we could do. I don’t know how well received that would be though. Maybe if we provided a preview of what the team looks like and let you back out before committing, at the cost of losing your position in the queue. At that point it would be much easier to replace you.

Justin are you able to tell us the specifics of what the MMR is based off of? This will give us a better idea of how we’re being placed on teams and what the game is looking for in order to place us. It will also help us make suggestions for better improving the system to help ensure a better solo queue experience for the majority.
We use Glicko2 for our MMR. When updating your MMR, we base it off the average MMR for the opposing team.
The current matchmaking will find 2 sets of 5 players that have are within each others MMR range. That range expands the longer a player has been waiting. Once all 10 players have been found, it will take those 10 players and form 2 rosters by shuffling players by rating (03478 12569.) It does not go out of its way to find low skill players, and does not factor in PvP rank or leaderboard rank at all.
Future matchmaking will go one step further and grab all players within range and use a scoring system to find the best quality match possible with those players. This means we’ll be able to do things like limit number of professions/builds, and more.
The most likely culprit for low skill players being matched is their default placement on the curve, and several ideas are being discussed on how to best handle that.

Some clarification on this – Marjory and Kasmeer only show up in the story version (first time) of The Nightmare Incarnate. If you joined a group for your first time through the Nightmare Incarnate instance and someone who had already completed the instance opened it for your group, then your first time through would have been in the repeatable version.
The instance checks the instance owner’s progress; if they have completed it before, the whole group will do the repeatable version, not the story version. Once you have completed the instance for the first time, your progress will also update to repeatable and every consecutive time you enter the instance, even if you enter solo, you will be put into the repeatable version. This is just a limitation on how we can set up a ‘story’ and ‘repeat’ version of something that is not a dungeon.
If you want to experience the Story version after you have already run the instance, party with someone who has never done the instance before and have them open the instance for your group. Also, if it is your first time inside the Nightmare Incarnate instance and you want to experience the story, make sure your group’s instance is not opened by someone who has done it before.
Lastly, if you wish to review the cinematic inside the repeatable version, you can interact with the terminal inside the boss room after the instance has been completed; it will allow you to watch the cinematic as many times as you wish.
Sylvari females have and always have had their own vocal (guttural) set.

Nice post, Infantrydiv. I knew you weren’t all that bad.
We haven’t announced anything regarding Legendary weapons in PvP. As such, everything in this thread is pure speculation and conjecture, which so happens to be against our forum Code of Conduct.
For now, tuck away the tinfoil hats. We’ll be releasing information on the changes we’re making to PvP and PvP Rewards in early December.
Thanks.
Thanks for the responses!
Most of the responses here seem to revolve around actual combat, builds, and lastly conquest.
With these three things in mind…how would you redesign the tutorial to cover all of these points? (As a thought, when we introduce new game modes our current tutorial is going to seem fairly of outdated, considering it only shows you how to cap points.)
Thanks guys. Hope you’re having a good weekend!
Thanks for the post, Jonnis.
Imagine you just made it out of the introductory tutorial – in your opinion, what’s the most confusing thing for a new player, right off the bat? Traits, builds, items, conquest? How to get into PvP? Feel free to mention whatever.
Also you could use MMR to place people on leaderboards but not on matchmaking.
Are you being sincere? You’re suggesting we don’t use the match making rating (MMR) for matchmaking but you think it would be okay for the leaderboard?

We do the range filtering already, but we could turn off, or slow down, the growth of ratings deviation over time. That’s a very plausible solution, but like you said it could mean some players would never get a match because there simply aren’t enough players online in their range.

The only advice I can really give to those who want more advanced tactics and strategy in their play is to form a group and play team arena.
We want solo arena to be a bridge from the casual play of hot-joins to the more serious play of team arena. We’re going to continue to improve matchmaking, but playing with less skilled players is likely to always be a possibility in solo arena.
Team arena also has no roster shuffling, so you can play with exactly who you want to.
