No mesmer and thief were the reasons. If toker or phanta could play mesmer, we could see different result. But, unfortunatly. they can’t. Nos clearly outplayed Snowball, but who gives a kitten when vM res their necro with engi, rev under mesmers distortion and your ele can’t do kitten, cause he is almost solo resing (in earth 5, rest of team gets corrupted and cced).

When Anet got a new director, they did a right step and listened to community for the first time. They brought back Alphine BLs, made reward tracks, tried to fix population issues with server linking, announced ideas how to balance scoring/nigthcapping, even decreased lag a bit. That was hype and many people returned to WvW and had fun.

Now Anet went the wrong way again. Community told that population imbalance and scoring (especcialy nigthcapping) are core issues that should be addressed as soon as possible, but Anet went to “do you want cosmetic updates? do you want repair hammer? open field cannons and mortars? (w00t?)”. I told several times on this forum that core issue of WvW is that system benefits avoiding fair fights and doing karma train/stealth/nightcap/blobbing/ganging. If they only listen and change scoring system to benefit players for winning fair fights, taking defended objectives, and punish players for avoiding fights, stealth capping and outnumbering.

Well, the core issues stay and Anet is running out of time. Bless Online, Camelot Unchained and Crowfall are very close, and if Anet did not manage to fix core WvW issues until their releases, people will just leave WvW to new RvR games.

Here are my thoughts.

Best – Druid (bunker).

Pros:
high mobility (slower than thief, same as warrior, faster than rest),
best sustain (same as engi, better than rest),
best 1vs1 potencial (same as engi and mesmer, better than rest),
1vs2 potencial (same as engi and mesmer, better than rest),
possible sneaky disengage (weaker than thief, same as mesmer and engi, better than rest).

Cons:
low chasing ablity (enemy only needs to dodge cc, pet f2 and autorun),
fights take time.

Other options:

Engi (bunker)
Pros:
best sustain (same as druid, better than the rest),
best 1vs1 potencial (same as druid and mesmer, better than rest),
1vs2 potencial (same as druid and mesmer, better than rest),

meduim 1vs2 potencial (you can kite, but you probably won’t kill anyone while kiting),

Cons:
no sneaky disengage (enemy with higher mobility and boon removal can chase you down).


Thief (marauder D/P)
Pros:
best mobility (faster everyone else),
easy sneaky disengage (can run away from blob chasing you).

Cons:
low sustain (you are dead to one cc-burst combo without stunbreaker),
medium 1vs1 potencial (you can constanly disengage and reengage fights/duels, but it is hard to call it 1 vs 1),
no 1vs2 potencial


Thoughts about other classes:
DH: low mobility and disengage mobility, you can pop noobs, but good players won’t ever die to you.
Burn Guard: too vulnerable to blocks/evades and condi cleanse.
Power Warrior: just weaker than condi version.
Revenant: medium at everything after nerf pathes except insane output damage; good in team fights with support classes, arguable in 1 vs 1, vulnerable to condies.
Condi Engi: too vulnerable to condi cleanse and condies itself.
Power Ranger: w0t?
Trapper Condi Thief: die from cancer.
Necro: 0 mobility and 0 disengage ability makes roaming a real pain.
FA Ele: just bad in 1 vs 1 and vulnerable to burst.
D/F Cele Ele: a bit weaker version of bunker engi.

Unfortunately, there is no such a thing.

I think the best way to learn is to duel skilled people on their main class and understand why you die to them (in other words, which skills you don’t dodge/evade so they do big damage/cc) or why you can’t kill them (in other words, they heal too much so you have to itterupt or apply poison in specific moments, or they block too much so you have to use unblockable attacks in right moments, or they have protection/stability up and you should steal/corrupt/wait for it, or they just passively regen too much so you have to play perfectly in both offence and defence to kill them over time). Then you ask them to link skill you want to evade/itterupt and show animation of it. Then you theorycraft how you can impove matchup with new knowledge.

Unfortunately, thief has bad matchups against almost every class, except necro, invo rev, zerker druid and power mesmer. So learning can be painful if you fight good players.

Scouts should not be able to completely stop assault with bigger numbers. Scouts should be able to slow assault for enough time to gather same numbers to defend objective. So update is good.

Look at the more important things atm:
Bugs:
1) Sometimes character gets stuck after evade/dodge, especially if he gets CCed (usually knockbacked) at the beginning/during dodge/evade. Skills to watch: dodge, Burning Retreat, Riposting Shadows, Surge of the Mists etc. Sometimes you need to press movement button again, sometimes you have to write /dance to unstuck.
2) Earthshaker/Phase Smash doesn’t hit ground if you stand on different terrain level than target area. It should hit.
3) Revenant ground skills does not have proper area marker. Hammer 2 should have the same animation as Fire Keep Lord’s hammer attack in Desert Borderland. Same goes for Mace 2 and Axe 5. There should not be ground skills in the game that does not have area marker on the ground.
Hammer 1 is also half transparent skill which makes it very hard to see. The same problem is with necro staff 1, but necro’s attack at least low damage and slow projectile that can be sidestepped. Rev can do up to 7k with Hammer 1 with passive busts from traits and animation of this skill should be obvisious.
4) In Alphine Borderland you can build invulnurable trebs/catas near defenders spawn and treb NE/NW towers and garry, this should be fixed.
Suggestions to WvW:
1) Don’t return Desert Borderland until you completely rework it.
2) Remove as many as possible chokes from open field in Alphine Borderlands: near SE and SW camps, bridge near hills, bridge near SE tower, choke near Henry (wurm), if it is possible redesign zigzags near NW and NE towers, etc.
3) Redesign bay outer so defenders can have a chance once attackers break into inner. Atm if attackers breach outer they can build trebs on outer wall and treb every siege inside, which makes inner defence pointless.
4) Redesign scoring system so it will benefit players for winning fight inside and outside objective, and punish for capping undefended or not defending upgraded objectives (in other words, for running away from fights).
5) Don’t involve PvE into WvW anymore. WvW Upgrades, Improvements and Tactics should not be farmed in PvE to be used in WvW. Never cross these game modes again, please. Make +5 Aura more accessible for new/small guilds. Give WvW players access to PvE only food and runes/sigil from HoT maps.
6) Start a new tournament with good rewards.

You should share more information about how you determine Skirmish winner and which activities will contribute most to it.

What you should achive with new system is: “Scoring encourages winning fights inside objectives and winning fights outside objectives. Scoring punishes capping undefended objectives and not defending upgraded objectives”.

Last Stand
Be careful about it. Most people are used to play final day as Karma Train. Match is already decided, no one defends anything, blobs run in circles and cap everything for karma. I am not saying this is good, but it is what people are used to and changing it can lead to bad circumstances. Think twice.

Anet, whatever suggestions people are making you need to understand one basic idea that stands behind why people play WvW: People want to have fun.

And different people have fun in WvW in different ways. There are at least several categories of people, who play WvW. I am gonna descrive you who they are, how they have fun and which mistakes you made in HoT update that ruined their fun:

1) Roamers – solo players who look for other players to have 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, may be 1 vs 2, 2 vs 3. They need easy way to find people to fight. Before HoT you could find a map where enemy scouts were upgrading keep, flip camps around that keep and snipe dollies. That would force enemy to come to flip camp / defend dolly and here we go, we have fight. By adding autoupgrades to objective you pretty much ruined fun for these players. (I saw some of devs said that OS is map for duels, in practice it does not work).
At this moment roamers exist only around Stonemist on EB.

2) Snipers – players who gather in small group (around 5 men) and assault enemy “paper” (tier 0) and “wooden” (tier 1) objectives in sneaky and fast way, forcing enemy to come to defend objective. The most effective attack is to assault “wooden” (tier 1) keep just before it turns into tier 2. That would force enemy to come with several players and defend keep. And here we have 5 vs 5 fight, near the keep, or inside keep, or in lord room. Fight, fun, succeful or failed assault. A set of HoT upgrades ruined fun for these players: autoupgrades, siege cost increase, hard access to +5, nerf of guild siege, nerf of spots from where you can attack both outer and inner walls, defensive tactics and improvements, long travel distances, etc. etc. Pretty much every HoT upgrade destroyed fun for these players. At this moment snipers are dead or turned in to brainless karmatrainers.

3) Scouts – players who upgrade and defend critical objectives (keeps, home towers). Before HoT scouts were the MVP of WvW making huge difference. Good scouts could save upgraded and sieged keep against enemy blob suddenly attacking objective. Bad scouts would lose it. Scout had to prebuild siege to defend objective, know where to build siege, how and when to use it. Attakers must know how to counter defensive siege or they would fail. Scout could “fight” a blob solo if he was good. That just was a siege fight. In HoT new maps does not need scouts. Autoupgrades, Watchtower, Emergency Waypoints, keeps easy defensive layout, nerf to siege, buff to gates/walls and lords and other stuff made scouts unnessesary. If before HoT to save tier 3 and sieged keep you need scout inside all the time, manning critical siege then in HoT it is enough to have random player to run from Rampart to contested objective to defend it. This player does not need to know a lot about scouting. All he needs to do is call commander to defend, activate Emergency waypoint or build ballista on top and kill offensive siege. At this moment scouts are dead or theer quality dropped to kitten.

4) GvG players – players usually from one guild who play for guild size fights (15 vs 15, 20 vs 20 or 25 vs 25). They don’t really care about objectives and all they want is good maps layout, size and ability to fight other guilds 24/7. They have asked for GvG support in WvW since day one. And they still did not get it. HoT introduces guild arena but it is designed for PvPers. Arena is designed for maximum 5 vs 5 fights, so GvG guilds have only 15 vs 15 in these arenas and arena is still too small. New borderlands introduced oasic event that lags every time it pops, ruining any GvG or blob scale fights on the map. Bug is still not fixed. New maps are also larger that makes harder to find another guilds. New maps also have kitten loads of chokes so sudden/unorganized fights usually turns into stale choke holding.

5) Blob fighters – players who gather in massive group lead by commander (40-70 players) and look for another blobs to fight. They want to fight another blob. The easiest way to find enemy blob is to ping enemy keep. If keep is upgraded and sieged enemy have to come and defend with blob. And here we have blob fight. Near keep, inside keep, inside lord room. Similar to snipers but in big clusterkitten. Before HoT if enemy does not have prebuit siege in keep and scouts and you come with a blob, enemy will probably lose a keep. After HoT defending keep became much easier. You don’t even need a blob to defend keep now. You pop Hardened Gates, kill offensive siege (or build shield generators) and build million ACs or/and hold a choke. If server does not have blob or don’t want to fight with blob you can’t force them, unless you go for their EB keep. In addition, there is an oasic event on new borderlands that lags any blob fights. So all blob fights moved to EB, leaving borders for PvD and karma trains. The result is huge queues for EB and noone plays borders. 6) Karmatrainers and nightcappers – players who capture undefended objectives while another servers are figthing or sleeping, They are hated by all other players categories and represent the boring part of WvW that affects one of most critical parts of WvW: server scores and ratings. The reason they exist is population imballance. Especially in specific hours (night, morning, working hours). A huge population drop that happened after HoT made these category more effective and benefited brainless door fighting against player figthing. The more WvW turns into PvE, the more WvW dies and the more people leave.

Important: I highligthed word fight to show that the most categories of players play WvW for fights. People want fights in WvW, bring it to them.

Summary: HoT updages ruined fun for the most categories of WvW players, by benefiting PvE and PvD in WvW. If you want to fix WvW and bring player back, when you create any upgrade in future keep one thing in mind: Upgrade must benefit players fights. If upgrade benefits PvE/PvD/Karmatrain that upgrade should never go live.

The interesting thing is that all they care about is money and while WvW is in dying state it still earns money. People buy gems to transfer to other servers and try to have fun there. The more WvW is dead the more people will transfer to top tier servers and the more money Anet will get. Since HoT top tiers on EU constantly change, cause people stop playing WvW and rest who still play jump servers around. Anet probably earns more money from server transfers then from WvW players buying something in Gem Shop.

If reality is as I described then it is not Anet interest to fix WvW while they earn money.

VERY Abnormal Ping Issues

After today update I have 250+ ms ping with spikes to 800ms. Usually my ping is 80ms. It was very stressful to play raids cause sometimes lag cause missed dodge/health lose. Three more guys from my raid started to experience the same problem. Our druid’s ping jumped to 500ms. Nothing changed with our ISP.

Btw I play on EU server and /ip command shows me ip of Texas server. Even in WvW! Did Anet move EU servers to US and it causes high ping?

I might send John an email about this supply shock. This was an unintended consequence of the removal of the Alpine BLs so I am pretty sure no one has really noticed yet and it’s not really a bug, but it does need attention.

Thank you! This is a very good upgrade in terms of Aetherium / GXP rate and also good tactics in WvW for scouts so it is good to have it.

Heavy Supply Bags are also used for Packed Dolyaks upgrade (“Double Dolly”) and critical for scouts too, so I hope an issue will be solved asap.

Heavy Supply Bags drop only from 80 lvl Centaurs. Only 80 lvl Centaurs were located on old Alpine Borderlands and can’t be found anymore. So there is no any way to get Heavy Supply Bags for WvW upgrade except buying them from Trading Post for crazy prices.

Could we get an answer from Anet Devs that they saw bug and working on fix to prevent players to speculate on Heavy Supply Bags prices?

If you ask about roaming than go full celestial fire/water/arcane with condi food/power utility. D/D or D/F utilize both power and condi damage. You will be able to burn warriors under Endure Pain and rekt people who dance near Ring of Fire. You will be able to regain health after you missed mesmer or thief stealth burst (~10k), your burning will force them go back to stealth.

If you jump and get immobilized you can’t use any skill until immobilize is gone. You can’t cleanse it. Is it bug or “feature”?

I have tested tempest the whole evening in spvp. Different builds, traits, skills. Everything is worse than fire trait line with dagger or focus offhand. Heal is useless, elite skill is useless, shouts are useless, water/air/earth overload are useless. Warhorn is ok, but it has 8 defensive skills. It is focused on boons, does less damage than focus offhand but don’t have blocks/reflects/invuls like focus.
I found the only one valuable rotation. It is Air -> Fire 2, 3, 5 -> Overload Fire -> Fire 2, 4, Earth -> Water -> Air 11111 (Fire has ~4 sec cooldown). It could compensate might stacking loss and dps loss. But the first test in match completely failed. Ele can’t stay in fire for so long, you have to do protection/healing thing or you just die. For each five overloads four were itterupted. There is no sense to use overload without stability and there is no sense to waste AoE for it.

Ele is class that relies on boons. You gave ele weapon focused on boons and traits focused on boons. As a result ele lost dps. Overloads could compensate dps loss, but using overloads forces you to stuck in attument and stop your boon building/heals that results your death. And they can be easily itterupted.

The whole class design failed because tempest is designed to do two major things:
1) Build boons
2) Use overloads
But he can’t do it together. If you use overloads, you lose boons. If you build boons, you have no time for overloads.

I doubt that anyone will use tempest for spvp.
