AS sad as it sounds, learning to read and write Japanese would be easier. Seeing as we cant even know what our personal MMR is. That’s what was good about WoW. You knew your MMR and knew your opponents MMR
I play a condi ranger and use my dreamer along with sword dagger in pvp. Condi is a ton of fun and I enjoy playing it versus anything else
Don’t even bother with dueling arena’s. They are a joke. If you want to get better, keep playing in real arenas. You have way too many variables in real games vs dueling arenas. Granted, its good to practice 1v1s I wouldn’t guage your “skill” on a 1v1. Like others have said, The dueling builds almost always get wrecked in a 5v5 game.
I guess everyone forgets signet of the hunt with a passive 25% movement increase. Rangers have a decent amount of mobility. If anything, rangers, other than spirit offer VERY LITTLE to a team comp like a bunker guard or shout warrior. For a ranger to be viable in high end team comps they need a lot more buffs than just LB. Power rangers are a joke in melee range and dodging the rapid fire is so easy its laughable. Once they have gone with PBS and RF you close the gap and destroy them.
I play a condi ranger and can literally melt a power ranger in 10 seconds if they are in melee range since most of them cant play the class with any ability.
Rangers as a class need a complete rework. The pets are almost useless. Traps are a joke. LB is way overpowered and SB is way underpowered. They are prone to almost insta death with heavy cc and have little cc of their own. Rangers are supposed to be like a hunter but cant use rifles or guns???? At least in WoW pvp, most hunters were feared and their pets could wreck you.
I would have to agree with you. I think the loss of solo queue has hurt the game. I really only play a few matches and then stop. Its not fun to lose so many games against a lot of premades. I don’t even bother with ranked generally except when I have a team since they are generally farming sessions otherwise. I would like to see solo queue brought back again since I see fewer players even playing pvp anymore
Glad I could help. I did want to mention, use signet of the hunt vs stone. The passive movement speed increase is great for moving fast from home to far. You sacrifice some armor with the loss of signet of stone but the speed makes up for it. If your build is right, you should have about 8 condi cleanse which is great vs necro’s or other condi builds.
As for weapon choice, I avoid the axe just because I don’t like its playstyle but its a personal preference. IMO, you need a ranged weapon, ie shortbow and melee weapons, ie sword/dagger but again, its preference. If your on point and a warrior or whatever closes the gap on you, you need good melee weapons because its too hard to kite them especially on maps where some areas don’t have a ton of room to kite. IF you have any other questions, feel free to pm me here or in game. Glad to help
I play a condi ranger and mainly rotate between home and far. Rangers are pretty prone to cc dmg so mid isn’t a place you want to fight in unless its needed. The most important things to remember is know when to fight and when to disengage. trying to 2v1 or 3v1 is a useless waste and gives the other team more points. Don’t fight off a point. If its a 1v1 and u down your enemy and they are off point, cleave them out with your ranged attack since it takes longer to cleave them then stomp them thus keeping them off the battleground longer. That’s something that comes with time, knowing when you can cleave vs stomp. Your toughest opponents are generally guards and mesmers. Guards have so much condi clear its hard to take them down. A shatter Mesmer will melt you in seconds if they are good. Sadly, rangers do not offer a lot when it comes to team support like a bunker guard or the like. Spirit rangers offer the most team support in the class but it still pales in comparison to a bunker guard.
Being an effective condi ranger is knowing how to stack bleeds which is positioning. Learning to kite effectively will allow you to stack your condi’s while staying alive. I run sb and s/d mainly because of the melee evades you get along with the poisons. Shortbow is great for bleeds but its positional. You need to be flanking to stack them.
The best advice is to just practice. Get into unranked matches and learn by trial and error.
Find a build that best suits your playstyle and learn it inside out. That way you will learn your strengths and weaknesses. Metabattle offers some decent condi builds which I have used but tweaked them to suit my playstyle. Remember, just because its a meta build doesn’t make you good. Find what works for you, practice, learn basic map rotations, LOS in each map so where you know you can be effective. Hope this helps and GL.
I play a full condi ranger and love it. Sadly, ranger does not offer a lot of team support unlike just about every other class unless you play spirit ranger which has fallen out of favor as of late. Cant say I have even seen a spirit ranger in pvp except on a rare occasion. The meta build for condi ranger is ok though I prefer sb and s/d and use sig of the hunt vs traps. I like to be able to move fast around a map. The nice thing about the condi build is you have literally 6-8 condi clears which is sweet. The classes that really counter condi well are guards and mesmers. I tried power ranger but find it pretty boring to play and way to easy to kill.
You just need to find the build that fits your playstyle plain and simple. I enjoy the freedom of having the sb for decent ranged attack but also the destructive capabilities of the s/d in melee range.
I kind of find it shocking that some people are flaming this post. I completely agree that a lot of what is said in HoTM and in matches are truly in bad taste. When did saying hate filled or tasteless things become acceptable?
People in the forums and in chat complain that there is no new blood and they face the same 30-40 people all the time and the main reason is the utterly toxic attitude to new players. As a father, if I heard the things said in HoTM come out of my childs mouth I would give her the spanking of her life. As an adult, if I said those things in front of my mother she would whip me sensless and Im 47!
When did trolling become an acceptable form of behavior? I hate to say it but many of todays players have zero sense of civility or common courtesy.
I play this game because I enjoy the competitive nature of pvp but I hate the nonsense and trolling that goes on all day long. Yes, I can ignore it but it sticks out in chat and you cant help but see it.
Recently I saw a player with the name “kitten is Funny” but written in a way which it got through the filter. Do you think your girlfriends, wifes, mothers or sisters think kitten is funny? If your mother was kitten d and murdered would you think it was funny? Personally, I would have banned the player for life for such a horrible, tasteless “joke.”
You want new blood in pvp? Act like an adult and conduct yourself in an appropriate manner and treat everyone with respect.
I will say that I like being able to select the map for the game but IMO it should be the map with the most votes is chosen. If it’s a tie then go to rng. Yesterday it was a 7-1 vote (2 abstain) for Foefire and skyhammer and skyhammer won. Needless to say no one other than the person who selected skyhammer was happy.
I think this topic is a great one! There needs to be several more mid and long term achievements/titles in pvp.
I would love to see some different armor and weapon skins unique to pvp other than the glorious hero’s armor. A legendary type weapon skin for pvp achievement. like X amount of wins in ranked play, etc.
Ive been participating in pvp for many many months now and am close to reaching rank 80 and I have noticed a lot over these months, reading the forums, watching mapchat etc and seeing people complain that the talent pool is so small and pvp needs this or that and a various number of issues we all see, hear or complain about. The one major thing I have noticed is the general lack of courtesy to fellow players, especially new ones that I think really turn a majority of people off. New players are, for the most part, treated terribly and many never return. Recently in a match, an opposing player typed out so many obscenities to a few other members of my team that even I was shocked and I am former military and I have heard them all! Gloating over a downed player and yelling “EZ” or “noob” or L2P or go back to pve are just uncalled for. If players want new blood in pvp, they need to help foster an enviorment that is welcoming to new players. Yes, there needs to be tutorials for new players, beginner maps and players to teach them rotations and team fighting and team building. Heck, I would even volunteer to help new players if there was a need for it as I think many others would also. Granted, tempers flare in the heat of a match as I am guilty of it myself but I am the first to whisper that player and apologize for my behavior because I was wrong and it is just uncalled for. In my many months of pvp I can count on one hand the number of players who ever whispered me and offered constructive criticism or helpful hints which I took and implemented. I don’t have enough fingers or toes to count the number of players who have tried to belittle or insult me for X Y or Z reasons and that speaks volumes to the character of many players. I want to see more people take up pvp and enjoy it as much as I have but that will only happen if the community makes a stronger effort to help new and returning players be more successful
I played solo queue tonight and most of the matches were really one sided. It was easy to recognize the premade teams and that was almost all of them. I agree that solo queue should stay solo queue and team queue as team.
I run a condi ranger in tpvp and love it and I am not a noob. People are always expecting a power ranger. Why is it that anything people don’t seem to like just call it a “noob build.” Well I don’t like mesmers cause they can clone and I don’t know which one to hit….must be a noob build. I don’t like warriors cause they knock me around with their hammer…..noob build. I don’t like thieves cause they disappear….noob build. Lich form….noob build. Medi guard…….noob build. There is a really simple solution to fighting condi builds……don’t play. Take up card collecting or knitting. If I meet a build I cant beat then I study the problem and figure out a solution. What are its counters? What are my strengths over their weakness and vice versa. I may invent a game where the pvp is two warriors with the same armor and same weapons and 3 skills but Im sure someone would complain that warrior number one can hit the skill one button faster than the other guy
Where is your evidence for that? As one of the first rangers to play survival sb s/d I can say it is one of the strongest condi builds and most condition rangers I meet play it now.
I agree. I run SB- S/D and love it. I tried axe/dagger but didn’t like the playstyle. It takes some adjustment but you get a great poison from the dagger along with your GM trait poison master. My build is similar to metabattles but prefer sword. Metabattle is a good base but tinker it to suit your playstyle
Condition Ranger looking for team. Im very comfortable with my class and have over 1300 games so far in pvp (not hotjoin) Looking for a team that wants to be competitive and has a strong leader. I will admit that I don’t have the strongest experience in pvp but am willing to learn and want to be on a team that will help me grow as a player and competitor. Im free most late afternoons, early evenings and all weekend so I can practice with the team as much as needed in those times. Also willing to learn other classes to help with team make up. Im ok with not being in a top tier team but want the team I join to have that as a long term goal. Please hit me up in game, Androlan. 9487. Thanks for your time.
When will Anet do something about this? It’s ruined the game in solo queue anymore. Plus, it counts against your rating even though the rating system is complete and utter BS. When I first started GW2 I loved the game. Now it’s gotten to the point it’s really not enjoyable to play anymore. Why try to improve as a player when half od the matches are handicapped by a 4v5 or an afk. If Anet is really thinking about becoming an esports thing they need to fix this problem. Why should more players attempt to become competitive when they are hamstrung by a crap system. I guess that’s why LoL will always destroy this game in popularity
As the title asks; IF you are in a 4v5 match (on the 4 side) and since your going to lose, and no anet, sometimes you can win…..maybe 1 in 1000 matches, does it count against you? In my opinion it should NOT count against your ranking since you cant control it and its not a fair match to begin with.
According to the Ready Up episode, there was talk about LB being used to much. This is pretty much saying “We are nerfing LB” which is fine with me and I play a ranger. You don’t see top tier pvp players using power ranger and there are way to many of them in pvp. Most of them ruin the game by just bad play. Granted, there are a few decent players in power spec but most of them are trash. I’ll be glad to see them gone once they realize they have to L2P in pvp
I really dont want a 2v2 or 3v3. I think this game has more balance in pvp than any other mmo I’ve played, though not that Ive played a lot of them. Yes, there are a lot of issues with pvp but all in all I like it better than the rest. I think fixing the 4v5s and afk issues will help ALOT! I think there should be some way to reward serious pvp players wiht better reward tracks for higher rating rather than time spent playing in pvp in that way you would have players working harder to be able to get those reward tracks. I mean if you did a 2v2 or 3v3 it would be all bunkers or engi’s playing and no one would take a point. An 8v8 with a larger series of maps would be an interesting concept though
Well I hate to tell you , but you wasted a topic on the forums. I’ve complained about it, everyone has complained about it and Anet does and says nothing. I posted about a certain player who afk’s through the first part of the match until its unwinable and then starts to play. I’ve had so many 4v5’s lately it isnt even something that makes me angry anymore. IMO, if you dip out on a match then you should get a one week ban from pvp. If you go afk in a match, one week ban first offense. But Anet will do nothing because I really don’t think it’s important to them at all. Now people complain about Rangers being OP because of LB, they are now nerfing it which surprises me because a ton more people complain about 4v5s and afk’s and they do nothing. And I will agree with you in that I see pretty much the same players everyday in solo q
So today I had a player who was afk most of the match for the other team then next match afk most of the game on my team. Next game he decides to play. Anet, I will give you the name!!! So you basically have two losses and hurt EVERYONE else on your team who wants to win so you can milk the rewards track?? Dont even get me or anyone else started on the 4v5s and dont say “well I won one just the other day” cause they happen like 1 in 100 times. This game is hardly free to play lets be honest and I want some satisfaction for the money I spend EVERY month on gems, etc and fix this issue. I mean in Wow if you had an afk or no show it was over quickly and that didnt happen a lot. There needs to be STIFF penalties for being afk or dipping out on your queue. There are many of us who play solo queue and are serious about getting better and winning or losing in a hard fought match. Enough of my crying now.
I will admit I am kinda old school and may not know all the unwritten rules in pvp but even in WoW days and today in GW2, I NEVER spawn camp and call people out when they do, though it doesnt happen a lot. I really think full 5 man zergs are particularly bad form. SO I was wondering if my thoughts are the norm or do people think its ok to spawn camp. I ususally try to keep a level head in a game and even if we get creamed I will say gg or well played most of the time. I dont think map raging is really acceptable either except for 4v5s or the like (insert anet rage here) so I am wondering what else people think are bad form in a match.
Rangers would be a lot better with more team utility and better pet mechanics. I dont play the typical “power Ranger” push two and run. I contest a point and will toe to toe with any class….except thieves:)
Rangers, played well, can really break open a map with a decent team. I use LB/GS but almost never use my LB. If anything, the class needs A LOT more buffs to bring it inline with the other classes.
Ok Im sure Im not thte only one but I do not understand the leaderboards. I will look at my friends list and see they have more losses than me but a higher percentage. Is your rating based on number of points you get in a match or wins or some sort of Ouija like formula because I dont understand it. Like my team rating dropped 2 percentage points in a day where I didnt play any team games with my team. A complete mystery as to understanding this leaderboard and how to figure out your rating
I loved this guide!! I play a LB/GS ranger but I dont use a “glass cannon” build. Mine is very tanky and can take and dish out a ton of damage. I almost never use my LB except when Im having to chase someone down or someone is kiting me. I hope this trend of flavor of the month rangers will end and serious rangers will be back in the game. I still think the class is nowhere close to where it needs to be in terms of balance especially with pets but thats another discussion
Great write up. An enjoyable read. I completely agree with Ranger, which I main. I have always said we are roamers and are there to help contested points and deal damage. We are not point holders though there is much more than pushing #2 from distance and leaving. Though I am deadly in melee for a short time but prone to conditions
We could solve all the problems with every class and make them all warriors with 3 skills. Stab, slash and block. No runes, sigils or amulets and no armor and everyone has 1000hp. Im sure someone would complain that player X slashes fater than player Y and it needs to be nerfed.
I will say your thread was well thought out but I will disagree to what you have posted so far. I dont know what else you have in store as for your proposed changes which I would have to take into consideration but I for one, like the buffs as I played ranger before and continue to play now. As a whole, I think the entire ranger class structure is broken. Pets are basically useless and unless you play a condi ranger, a glass build is your best option. The only time I have ever killed another player with rapid fire alone was in wvw on an up 80. In tpvp I use my GS more than LB and can be just as deadly or in turn, just as horrible with either. Granted, Rangers are the flavor of the month for players with a low skill approach….push 2 and run, and I get aggravated when Im in a t match and see a level 3 or 4 ranger and his glass build and then watching him die over and over again because he doesnt understand the class. IMO I dont think LB should be nerfed as it has finally brought the class up somewhat. I think the class could use a few more buffs, mainly to pets. I still think we are weak in melee range though I usually dont have an issue with it unless its a thief or a bunker guardian. For some reason I die to them way to often but I know thats a L2P problem for me. RF is super easy to dodge or counter and it happens often in tpvp. I simply say people who complain about RF being OP boils down to a L2P issue plain and simple. But, I am interested to see what other changes you would make because your ideas so far are well thought out but I just disagree with them
Maybe you should L2P. I play a “power ranger” and get countered a lot. Hey, I hate engi’s and their bombs so anet can you nerf them. I dont like mesmers and their clones, nerf them. I dont like guardians, nerf them. I dont like necros cause they fear me, nerf them. I dont like thieves cause they stealth, nerf them….. I could go on but I learn to counter them and sometimes I win, sometimes I dont. I dont cry on forums about them being OP or useless. Team Blacklisted has a power ranger on their team who are in the TOG so should they remove him cause he is useless? Your post is irrelevant because you put zero thought into it. I really hate engis and their bombs. I really do but I deal with it. Your mad because NOW you have to deal with a ranger where you didnt before. Rangers add a very different dynamic to a team fight and you need to learn to counter them just like EVERY OTHER CLASS. If you dont like them in pvp you can go do Karka or Jormag or fractals.
Welcome as ever my friend
and thanks to Brix!
Sooo…. any thoughts of what LB rangers mean to PvP currently/in the future?
Well as one who does a lot of spvp and tpvp, we are pretty much hated. I have been called a sniping coward (duh!!! that’s what I do!!!) and that we are OP and general map raging to no end. Playing a “power ranger” I sacrifice a lot of defensives and condi cleanse for power so I am pretty glass but can do a TON of damage. I see power rangers as a pure contested point support role. We can easily float point to point and deal damage, hit and run. Many 1v1’s I can handle except for most engi’s and win a lot more than I lose. Tpvp is more difficult mainly because of the caliber of players who know how to counter the LB damage. I can wreak havoc on a point with several people but I have to know my limitations. For the people who rage on me saying we are OP I just remind them to L2P. The tpvp community has easily adjusted to the ranger buff.
I feel ya bro. I am soooooo tired about the 4v5s in tpvp. Sadly, I don’t think anet will do anything about it. I started doing tpvp because the players tend to be more serious and helpful and much less 4v5s though they don’t occur like spvp thankfully and they tend not to bail in a lopsided score
I would agree with ResJudicator to a point. Rangers ARE NOT OP. I consider myself a pretty good “power ranger” But as Res pointed points out “They trade being able to easily burst from range for having a harder time supporting their team.” Which is true to a point. Having a well rounded group allows a ranger to free roam and help on contested points. Being able to do a lot of damage makes us a glass build. For everyone who complains about ranger burst it comes down to L2P. WE are easily dodgeable but you have to have more situational awareness. People who think it’s an easy class to play by just pushing two and you win…..you are wrong. There is a whole lot more skill to it than just #2 button. My favorite retort to everyone in chat who rages “RF is to OP or sniping coward” is L2P.
-The thief is the anti glass king in this game. Only if you catch him fighting someone else can u take him out. A skilled thief is epilepsy inducing.
PvP is fine!!!, and PvP is what you balance this game for
Probably the best line about thieves I have ever heard and so very true!! I find it so funny that everyone is still hating rangers. Being new to this game, does this happen with every new buff or nerf to each class? I hope so because I have never seen so much complaining about a class. Seems most are upset they don’t have an “easy” kill anymore.
THis is actually a pretty well developed thread and not too much “nerf Ranger’s” thread. I think some people have hit the nail on the head in that LB rangers are a support damage class. We dont hold points, we sneak and peek, hit and run. We want to catch you unaware. In tpvp I never see anyone complaining about LB ranger. They evade just as much as they did before but now they are bringing their reflects and playing differently in repects to rangers. I play to win as I am sure everyone else does. If I am stabbing u in the back with a rapid fire or point blanking you off my teammate before you finish him, well, it’s your fault for not paying attention. I play a ranged glass build and know if you can close the distance I will die and Im ok with that. If I amdying but up on your team by 100 points, then kill me all you want but you will have to deal with me and be aware of my location because I will hide from above and afar and wait to kill you. My role is damage dealer and I roam from point to point waiting to catch you napping. I wish they would nerf engi’s and their bombs and turrets!!!!
I did a few soloq’s as a ranger just to make sure I didn’t write nonsense, and ended up winning several 2v1’s, including against 2 hambows, and I had no experience in ranger pvp whatsoever. To me that is the ultimate proof that rangers are stupidly easy to play and have way too much damage for the ammount of effort you have to give.
Androlan – if you die when you melee you’re doing something wrong because GS is just ridiculously op in terms of defense… You can tank anything with GS and 1 trait point in nature magic..
I would agree with you on using GS but prefer to use horn since I can buff my party. Granted I am far from the best ranger, but I see LB ranger as purely support class in spvp or tpvp. We sneak and peek, back shot and disrupt attacks and add offensive support in taking a point. Nothing worse than a hard fought point then to die to a cheap shot from behind (and I know from playing a guardian!) but it’s about winning. I want to be able to drop in on a contested point and disrupt and cause havoc and run. I think the ranger changes are good and don’t want them to change even if I am playing my guardian. Yea I hate them when they snipe me from afar but that’s just making me have much more situational awareness
I am so sick of people crying about rangers. Oh they are so OP, blah blah blah. NERF engi’s and their stupid bombs that toss you around like a rag doll or thiefs should not be able to stealth. Maybe we should just make all melee classes with no stealth, no fear, no bows, no pets, no healing just toons with a sword and shield and then I am sure people wouold cry about that too cause player X shield is bigger than player Y’s shield. I play a lot of tpvp and spvp and as a ranger, I get countered a lot. If I melee I am dead. I need to create distance and use those skills to counter others. If people really hate rangers that much, go play against a 5 man engi team and then lets see who crys about them getting nerfed. If people really hate rangers then go play wow and whine and cry and they will nerf it for you and then ANY 9 year old can faceplant the keyboard and win. Or just go zerg in wvw where there really is little skill involved or better yet just go fight Karka queen.
Well maybe we should get rid of warriors 1000 blades, guardians hammer knockback, mesmers multiple ghosts and fears oh and I don’t like engi’s turrets. Everyone loved the ranger when they were weak but now that they have a bit more power everyone wants to hate them. A good player can counter a ranger’s PBS or rapid fire. In my very humble opinion I think GW2 is one of the most balanced MMO’s on the market. It’s the players, not the class that make the difference. If you are getting wasted by rangers then look in the mirror, that’s the person you need to blame. I play a ranger and a guardian in spvp and have equal success with both. At the end of each match I am the first to say good game to all even if I got my face pummeled the entire time. I don’t cry in map chat about OP rangers. If you hate PBS, rapid fire and the like, you can PVE
and thanks to Brix!
