-Function gyro works as a target skill. So you need to target a downed ally or enemy and press f for the function gyro to work.
This is incredibly helpful, thank you.
Read my post on forums and it explains what I do. Scrapper pvp viable for PvE is title
I’ll have a look at it, thanks.
Play the scrapper marauder hammer that the Euros are using in the pro league. It’s amazing.
Oh for sure. Celestial made no sense to me on a build without any conditions.
…
This is hugely informative and exactly what I needed to hear, thank you.
The hammer blast chain is on a really low CD, so it makes total sense with all the water fields. I mostly play solo, though, so without my own fire fields there’s no real way to blast might. I’m now wondering if I should swap elixir gun for bomb kit or flamethrower.
I’m going to put your advice to use and try some more matches. Thanks everyone.
Engineer was my favorite class to play in PvP before HoT. It was a very dynamic class, both mentally and physically. None of this feeling is translating to the scrapper update and I really don’t get it. I’m trying to use the meta build and I’m just a huge liability to whatever team I’m on.
First, I don’t get why I’m supposed to be using hammer over rifle. Rifle can secure a decap by itself. It’s utility is great, and it has a few nice bursts. Hammer feels completely useless. Like, it has a short duration stun and a short duration block, but neither have been gamechanging. The hammer 3 ability is just a tool that melee weapons need to be useful. Half the time it launches me backwards anyway. The hammer auto has more sustain damage than rifle, but toolkit auto is just as good for melee damage as hammer. I would love to know why this weapon is preferred.
Secondly, I don’t get how function gyro works. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t. Sometimes, the “gyro smash” text pops up, but pressing it doesn’t seem to do anything. I’ve tried against the training dummies in the mists. It works against them sometimes, but it takes a very long time to do the stomp. It’s also really hard to tell where it is or if it’s doing anything. I’m pretty sure it usually just dies to cleave damage, but I have no way of knowing. I have no idea if it can revive people at all, I don’t think I’ve ever had the option.
I think the “gyro smash” dialogue is popping up when I try to stomp someone I’m standing right next to. I think I have to press it before I can actually stomp someone. I think this is what’s delayed me stomping multiple times, until I end up taking too much damage and can’t attempt a stomp anymore. I feel like this ability has saved almost everyone I’ve tried to stomp since I’ve tried playing scrapper. This ability is very baffling and I don’t understand how it works, or even how it’s supposed to work.
Thirdly, I don’t know how I’m supposed to contribute damage. Elixir gun certainly isn’t going to do it. None of your elites can kill someone on their own (maybe rampage). Hammer is ok for damage, but it’s not like sustained power damage is going to kill anyone in this meta. I honestly feel like I’m running around tickling everyone.
The one thing I do get is that it’s pretty hard to kill me, but I don’t know what else I’m bringing. I can’t bunker a point against two people, I can’t decap, I can’t finish, I can’t res, I can’t deal damage. I’m consistently the worst on my teams in score, and in contribution. I really don’t get it at all. Help please.

Rekka is in charge of the mine in the guild hall. Obviously, not a big character. But, I think there are some interesting subtleties to her that I didn’t want people to overlook.
If you ask her about herself, you learn that she has no magical talent, and she never graduated from school. That’s enough to make any asura an outcast, but she also has tiny ears, so she can’t even make up for it by being pretty.
My point being that she’s at the bottom of the social ladder. Right down there with the asura that end up working on ships owned by bookahs, or other manual labor better suited to a golem.
Her choice of career says a lot about her, though. In one of her idle lines of dialogue, she says something like ‘Asura originally came from deep underground. I honor that heritage.’
I found this to be very telling. Despite the fact that she was so rejected by her society that they wouldn’t stop the mob from stealing her land, it was still a big part of her identity. Despite having no talent in things valued by modern asuran society, she chose to be a miner, just so she could hold on to that connection to who she was as an asura.
Whether she chose Riven valley because it left her closer to Rata Sum, or because it’s was convenient to find work there, I can’t say. Whether she’s empowered by her asura identity, or holds onto it so tightly because she lacks confidence, is hard to say. There’s not a lot to go on, after all.
All of this was told without exposition shoving it down your throat. It was made evident through natural conversations, and the design of the character. A+ writing right there, even if not intentional.
It’s been reported that it’s broken, but I think I might know how.
I think the only weapons that appear in my Fractal Weapon Collection are the ones I earned before the fractured update. If you remember, that update changed fractal weapons from stat-less exotics to skins. The weapon skins I earned after fractured are not showing up in the collection.
I hope that’s helpful.
These runes are necessary for the health of the game.
For years people have been kittening about ‘being burst from full health to dead out of stealth’ or ‘getting chain cc’d to death and there’s no way to stop it’. Vampirism and Svanir runes are the only counter to those strategies.
All the kittening in this thread amounts to “I couldn’t 100 to 0 them out of stealth.” Good. The game is better this way.
4/5 of the players on my team had their clients crash at the same time in a match. Other people have been having the same issue, see https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/pvp/Bug-Entire-team-crashed/first#post5425354
Windows 7
nvidia geforce gtx 660
The game asked if I wanted to send a crash report, but I really needed to log back in to get back in the match. Sorry I don’t have a better reproduction.
No, I’ve never had a fight with an ele that I didn’t feel I couldn’t walk away from. The damage never really felt threatening to me. The trouble fighting them is that you have to contest points.
They have very long duration CC with the blowback and the earth stomp. If your stunbreak is down or you don’t have stability, that’s when they’re able to whittle you down, and there isn’t much you can do about it. After they finish with the CC, you are able to fight them again, but they swap to water and pop frost aura. Now they can kite you while taking almost no damage, and continue to whittle you down. After that’s over, they can go back to their blowback → fire field → earth knockdown combo, and you’d better pray you have more stability.
So, not a lot of damage, but if you stay to fight them, they’ll win the attrition, and conquest is all about attrition.
You have a short memory, apparently.
Celestial builds only became viable when they changed strength runes. Might stacking is what makes celestial runnable at all. Boons are the problem.
I cannot log into leader boards at all.
Silv.9207 – literally nothing you described is new. You are more or less complaining that mesmers exist. This is a ltp issue.
Darknicrofia.2604 – This is not an argument that mesmers should be nerfed. You actually support my point that other classes need to be buffed.
zapv.8051 – One of the first posts I made on this board was an analysis of why burst gameplay in gw2 was bad for all gameplay. But, basically, because self-healing is so high, and because all your health regenerates when out of combat, there is no attrition in this game. Because there’s no attrition, in order to be able to kill a ‘bunker’, damage builds need a way to burst them down, either solo or as a pair of two. It’s a huge flaw fundamental to gw2 design.
Nier.8741 – This is exactly what I’m talking about. The game will be better when all classes are like mesmer, and none are like current engi and necro. There have been too many interesting ways to play classes that have been flat out removed by being nerfed to oblivion. The game has gotten less strategically diverse as time goes on.
I’m surprised people are asking for mesmer to be nerfed. I am not surprised that people are noticing mesmer is more powerful since the patch, but I am surprised they want it to be nerfed. Without exaggeration, this is the first time since launch that mesmer has had good trait synergy. Seriously. The class has had its back broken since the first few months after the game came out.
Mesmer is working for the first time in 2 years. The class now has actual options for overall strategy, trait selection, weapon selection, and utility selection. Why do people want that to go away? I think it’s because anet has neglected actually fixing their classes for so long, that having a class in the game that actually works is upsetting to people.
It’s like, your parents beat you every day, and you have this friend, and his parents beat him every day too, so you get along. Then one day, he gets adopted by parents that love him, and don’t beat him, and you resent him for it. All you want is for him to get beaten as well, so you can go back to being the same. It’s crab mentality.
The problem to me is the awful way that the classes in the game are treated. I made a post awhile back, but for about two years fully half of the elementalist traits were so bad that they never had a place on any possible build. It was terrible. There are still enormous amounts of traits and weapons that have no place in any part of the game. That is not ok. And when anet does nerf things, they go way over the top with it. For practical examples, remember when warrior had an awesome greatsword + quickness dps build? Remember necro before the dhuumfire fiasco? And engineer got gutted this patch. Or, hell, remember when mesmers had viable confusion specs at launch?
There should not be useless traits, utilities, or weapons. Classes should have actual choices about the strategies they employ. I’m not saying there don’t need to be any changes to mesmer ever, but you can’t compare a class that’s working for the first time in three years to the barely functioning state of most of the classes today and say that mesmer should be nerfed on that basis. This game needs serious buffs.
I’m going to go ahead and agree with this completely. I’ve drawn all 3 troll maps way, way too much for how few votes they get. I’m not going to be trying to play until they are removed from queue, unfortunately.
I like the new match accept button. I’m glad it’s here.
Today, I logged on to try to play some ranked games, but I was stuck in queue for about ten minutes. Every time, 9 people would accept the match, and one person would not. I thought it was weird that one person went afk every minute. So, I tried not hitting accept and waiting for the timeout.
It didn’t kick me from the queue. The 9 people waiting for the game to start for 10 minutes had been blocked by one person not hitting accept. I understand waiting for one or two rounds for them to get ready, but this was going on for about ten minutes. I don’t know if they were afk or just trolling around.
I tried leave that queue and see if I could join a different one. But when I rejoined queue, I was in the same situation with 9 people hitting accept and one person failing to do so. In the end it looked like it wasn’t possible for me to get into a game, so I stopped trying.
I think it would be better if people who don’t hit accept are removed from queue so that the other players can have a chance to get into game.
The fix today corrected the problem with the number of games displayed, but I am still missing progress towards the champion title achievement for mesmer.
I know for a fact that I had 100 tournament wins as mesmer. I remember specifically playing to get to that point. I also remember that I had more wins than tournament wins as mesmer.
My tournament wins have been reduced to 92. My wins have been reduced to 100. It looks like games were removed from my history somehow.
Edit: I also have only the 3 ranked games as engineer in my pvp history, although my engineer progress towards the title seems to be correct. I find this odd, because I have other classes listed as having ranked games. Maybe related?

this is beautiful, thank you.
One of our guildmates was supposedly hacked. They cleaned out about 1000K gold worth of stuff out of the bank.
Thinking about what could be done, I think it would be useful to have the option to set the bank to lock someone out if they’ve made a certain number of withdrawals in an hour. At least that would limit the possible damage before someone notices.
Galvanic helm looks pretty good, better than draconic I think. Though arah or karma helm might be better for the scary face.
There are no good shoulders. The priory ones have the right shape, but the wrong texture. Arah shoulders would be pretty good, if they were symmetrical. I don’t have a justification for using vigil.
There are a few decent options for gloves, but none that really match texture wise with other appropriate armor.
There were a few chest pieces I liked, but cof is the only one that has the right texture. Cof also has the flames, though, which feel out of place to me.
Cof legs work well. There was an asuran cultural leg piece that looked good too. Neither of them had the flap between the legs, though.
The closest boots are arah, but they have a huge flat plate area, so the texture is all wrong. Harder to notice on asura though.
All in all, I’m not really happy with any of my options, and I’m not convinced this is possible.
So, rewards are still not weighted properly by tier. At this point I’m going to assume that they’re using an approximation algorithm for their rng that saves on server cycles but has weird peaks in the short term.
For pve: I think you’re overestimating what needs to be in a template. All you need are traits. Everything else is gravy. I’d probably be annoyed if they contained other data. I change utility skills often enough that It would be pretty pointless to include them in any build, but utility skills should be serializable too.
Sharing builds now is: I ping my weapons and one piece of armor, then I go through and type out all my traits. It would be super convenient to be able to just ping the traits.

go to fight some bosses!
Only 5 of us go. Whatever, that should be enough.
We down 2 bosses. Then everyone leaves.
I can’t get anyone else to fight anything.
Then I gave up.
Everything has already been mentioned, but
Stealth: trivializes run sequences. All of them, in the whole game.
Black Powder (pistol off-hand 5): Perma blind. A significant number of mobs will not be able to deal damage.
Crazy DPS: Everyone knows this already. Did you know thief has a trait that lets them deal more damage with bundles? Bundles like ele conjures, for example.
Spammable blast finisher: Enough said.
I feel like I should tell people that boon duration food with phalanx strength lets you keep perma 25 might stacks by yourself. Strength Runes are not needed for that.
I probably shouldn’t be surprised that people took this the wrong way, but I am.
This has nothing to do with class balance and everything to do with warrior not having meaningful gameplay options. Longbow interactions have become so routine that you can make a flowchart for them. I find it unbearably boring. Do you mean to say that many people are in support of lack of build variety?
Warrior does not have other options
Exactly.
3300 hours over 625 days.
gw2 will never be a popular competitive game as long as the game mode is point capture. Point capture has proven unpopular in every game it’s been tried.
This has been going on for at least six months now. These days it’s every single game. I can’t take it anymore, it’s more tedious than dungeons. It’s like watching the same 30 second longbow animation demo every single game. The only guarantees in life are death, taxes, and that warrior will be using a godkitten longbow.
Dyed weapons would be super cool.
So, I like the variety of different staves in the game, but there’s a particular set of features I believe to be underrepresented.
Radial symmetry
Small-ish head
subtle particle effects
Emberspire is nice, but the fire theme doesn’t match everyone.
Imryldyeen is one of the nicer staves, but it’s hard for me to match that green with armor.
Monsoon I really like, but it has similar problems to Emberspire.
Warden staff is really good, but doesn’t really speak “magical” to me.
Some staves look great on asura, like Modniir, Whisper’s, and Pact, but the heads look comically large on other races.
Bifrost basically perfectly matches all the features I like, and I’m fairly certain the lack of other nice staves is why it’s such a popular legendary.
I can only remember a few, and I can’t find a list of all of them. I feel like all of them have the basic [element name], like Fire!, etc, so I’ve excluded those.

As an offensive guard, you want to look for times to get in, do your damage, and get out. Prolonged fights against multiple opponents are not your strong point.
My advice, if you see 3 people coming at you, is to run. Also I think you can swap contemplation of purity for stand your ground, should help you get more stomps.
Whether its overpowered or not its starting to become a problem as its further diminishing our already small diversity in gear choices.
That’s the definition of overpowered. Games are competitions of ambiguous decision making. The rune allows you to trait tanky and deal high damage, which reduces the number of viable builds that can face players with this rune. Some classes utilize the runes more effectively than others, reducing the number of classes that meaningfully impact the game.
These runes remove real choice from the game, and that’s bad for everyone.
Everyone can use these runes, so they are not overpowered.
Everyone can log out and make a warrior, but that has nothing to do with being overpowered. If a choice is so much better than any other choices, then there are not actually other choices.
Just boon strip the might away.
Easier said than done. A necro running corrupt boon and focus can keep their might down for maybe 10 seconds before they have 10 stacks again. I’ve tried.
A thief will only steal 3 stacks of might. They are better off running the rune themselves.
Null field is nice, but easy to walk out of.
Fundamentally, all the boon ripping in the game is too slow to meaningfully keep might off of one person. You can expect 4 of your opponents to be running these runes. The resources spent boon ripping have cooldowns that are too long to keep might off of people.
I really don’t know why you wouldn’t think this is serious.
It’s a pointless waste of time having where it is.
I use it maybe 20 times a day. Having it hidden behind another menu makes it take another 1-3 seconds, depending on how accurately I click.
I think it’s safe to assume 30 seconds per day, per player. If 2000 people play the game every day, that’s 17 hours a day spent clicking through this one menu to get to deposit collectibles. That is collectively 428 days spent clicking through this menu by the players since launch.
I posit that this is avast waste of human effort. Put the deposit collectibles button on the item interface, please.
Thank you guys, I’ve been playing phantasm mesmer, to which hambow is a hardcounter. I’ll try out the engi thing for sure, love that class.
I don’t care what class I have to play, or what spec I have to run. I’m sick of fighting this spec and I want a way to beat them reliably.
sPvP was legally dead, it had flat lined. The Dec 10th defibrillator managed to get its heart going again, and now it’s in critical condition. I believe it can make a full recovery.
I actually prefer celestial for my grenade engi. It’s one of the rare cases where you do use every stat.

You can’t fight them in melee because the evade everything you do.
You can’t fight them at range because they’re keep you crippled and they kite away.
usually I try to line of sight them, and it just becomes a big war of attrition that they always win. I can’t get in and bust them because of their disengages. Fighting them is suicide, running is suicide.
honestly, help please.
Lava font on down is a very real and effective build. Primarily useful in wvw, due to the ability to mist form into keeps, and rally while in mist form in large zerg fights.
remember your bowl of fire salsa.
If you are traited so that meditations heal, and if you are very aggressive after you use it, then the healing is actually on par with your other heals. I really like that it promotes a more pro-active and aggressive playstyle, and I feel like it gives a meaningful choice to the class. You can choose litany of wrath if you want to proc the fury on meditation trait, or shelter if you want to wait out your enemies highest damage rotations.
Except the cast time kills it. It takes a long time to cast, so that when you are finished you have less hp than when you started. You could run away and cast it, but then your overall healing is reduced by the time it takes you to get back into combat (not to mention that this kills the active playstyle). You could pop focus 5, but then your damage mitigation is reduced when compared to what it would have been taking shelter, and you take more damage overall.
I have never been put into a better position by this heal. A button that took away 100hp and gave me fury would be actually be more beneficial. The cast time really needs to go.
When the game first came out, I used to have to solo alpha, because my team would constantly die fighting him. This was back when you could revive at any time, so people would just run back and corpse rush alpha to death. Fighting alpha in this was was extremely inefficient, and a single path of coe took upwards of 1.5 hours. It was very frustrating for players, and many of them swore to never attempt the path again. The few of us that didn’t die constantly ended up playing together more often, and we started developing tactics for the boss.
Alpha has a few abilities
1. cone aoe rock spike (paths 1 and 3). The best way to deal with this was to be inside alpha’s character model, as it either negated or reduced the amount of times you would be hit by the attack.
2. dragon’s tooth (paths 1 and 2). Alpha applies burning in an aoe around him, and drops a dragon’s tooth on all player entities a certain distance away from him. It’s easy enough to walk out of the dragon’s tooth, but it’s also easy to avoid spawning them by fighting him at close range. This does require you to clear the burning.
3. Ice AOE (paths 2 and 3). Alpha creates a circle on each player entity that deals damage and applies bleed after a short amount of time. If you are in the exact center of this circle, it won’t deal damage to you. When this attack spawns, you will be in the exact center, but if you move at all the attack will hit you. The circles are also quite large, so it’s very easy to be standing on the overlap of a circle spawned on an ally. The best solution for this attack is to dodge it.
4. Alpha’s fingers (2nd and 3rd encounters, all paths). Alpha spawns tentacle things that deal high damage at close range. The best way to deal with these is to avoid standing close to them and to attack them with AOE’s while downing alpha. As a side, these can be killed to rally off of when you are downed.
5. Crystal Prison (2nd and 3rd encounters, all paths). Alpha locks one player into a crystal cage. This attack can actually be dodged. The problem with that is that you only have a limited number of dodges, and if you use one to avoid a crystal you will probably go down to the ice aoe. If you have a teleport, you can use it to escape the prison. It will also break on its own after a certain amount of time. The best way, though, is to have your allies break it for you. The easiest way to do that is if everyone is cleaving in melee. The prison will be gone almost as soon as it spawns.
6. Essence heal (3rd encounter, all paths). Alpha spawns essences that quickly move to him and heal him. If you manage to kill them, they won’t heal him, though this is almost impossible. It can sometimes be done if everyone is doing crazy high damage, but otherwise it’s just a mechanic to stop people from being able to solo the path.
And so, the best way to deal with almost all of his abilities is to be attacking him in melee range. This also has the benefit of group sharing buffs and condi cleanses. Also, if you go down and you’re at range, alpha will finish you before your allies can get to you. But if you’re all in melee, then 4 of your allies can res you immediately, and get you back up before his next attack. As an added benefit, melee damage is higher so he dies more quickly.
So after a while, it became apparent that the best way to fight alpha was for everyone to get up in his face. But he’s a pretty scary guy, and it’s hard to convince pugs to do this for their own safety. People are also not perfect with motor controls, so they would sometimes break stack and die, and there’s nothing you can really do to help someone who goes down outside of melee range on alpha. And I’ve been typing this out for a little over ten minutes, I can’t really communicate all this information in the middle of a dungeon every time I’m in a group with someone new.
That’s where the beauty of stacking comes in. You can tell someone to stack in a corner and dodge into it. They won’t break stack, and they’ll be in melee range, and you can keep them alive and clear the path. They don’t even have to know why what they’re doing is optimal, which would take forever to explain and practice, and they can focus on learning one thing at a time, like dodging his ice AOE.
There’s a lot going on with the alpha fight, too much to explain to an inexperienced player in the middle of the run, but all that info can be communicated by having them stack. That’s why people do it. The fact that you thought nothing was going on is evidence that this technique, which was developed over months, is effective.
Some of the advice in this thread is terrible, my god.
Guardian can be tricky to get used to at first. You must understand that your support is pro-active (you will help your allies before they need it). This also mean that if you’re doing it right, no one will be able to notice (which doesn’t have the same feeling of instant gratification as making green bars go up).
Your support takes 3 forms.
1. Boons
Boons are a vital part of your kit. You can apply protection (33% damage reduction, so op), regen, stability, and aegis more than any other class. These allow your group to run self-destructively glassy builds, and can force people to clear content despite themselves.
2. Utility
Reflection/projectile absorption is probably the most important thing to have in pve in this game. You have wall of reflection and shield of the avenger. Lots of classes specifically have the class weakness of having low condi removal. You have pure of voice, purging flames, and Virtue IX trait. Elementalist can trait so that every time they blast a fire field they give fury. You can drop long duration fire fields they can blast with lightning hammer.
3. Direct heals
You can sort of do this, but if you’re doing your job well otherwise this won’t be necessary. Ideally this is only something you incidentally do while performing your actual support functions of damage mitigation.
I suggest you try the build I run.
-I run boon duration runes and food, and trait into the boon duration tree. Hold the line gives 8 seconds of protection =)
-try virtue bombing in dire situations (use renewed focus, mash all virtues, mash them all again).
-One of the best parts of guild wars 2 is that you are not required to take damage. So, I run berserker gear to help clear things a little faster. One thing to note is the 5 trait in honor, that gives you vigor on crits. If you don’t want to run berserker, I understand, but I would recommend knights as an alternative, so that you can maintain your vigor uptime.
I hope this is helpful, guardian is a lot of fun, and their support is game changing.
The environment is spiffy. It really gives the feeling of something gone wrong. Also the ceiling is pretty cool, if you haven’t bothered to look up.
The events are all challenging and fun, and more interesting than “afk attack this monster until it dies.” The anomaly is one of the most engaging bosses in the game.
Scarlet is annoying, but she’s there for all of ten seconds and you don’t even have to listen to her. Frankly, it’s satisfying to walk past her like she doesn’t even matter. Ignoring her is cathartic, like beating up Malchor.
Everyone in my group is always happy to roll this one. Bang up job.
Because I actually enjoy the underwater fractal and enjoy soloing that one. I can’t solo swamp because it requires two other people for me to get the door open.
You can open the door with only two people, provided one is a mesmer.
I have 18 sets of armor for my 7 characters, and I want more so I can run different builds when I feel like it.
It costs about 50 gold to craft an ascended weapon right now, in addition to all the grinding you have to do for account bound materials. I imagine the cost will be similar for each piece or armor.
There is no way I’ll ever be able to have all ascended gear, even one set is going to be a long term goal. Exotics are still quite useful.
Fractals exist to cater to players who enjoy vertical progression. The idea is to work towards something over time.
The agony system allows this to happen without affecting the value of the gear of players who don’t choose to participate in the system.
You can experience all of the fractals without agony, and you can survive the agony to level 20 without AR.
What exactly is the problem?
The current sorting methods for the gemstore are serviceable, but I believe it could be improved.
For the gemstore, it would be nice if armor, town clothes, and weapons were in different sections. It would also be nice if armor could be separated into light, medium and heavy.
The services tab has a wide variety of items with different purposes. I don’t have a specific suggestion, but it seems like that tab could grow unwieldy.
For the trading post, it would, again, be nice to be able to search armor by light, medium, and heavy.
The consumables category is very strange. It contains all the dye, skins, recipes, siege, and nourishment items. The subcategories, however, are all empty. It would be nice if the subcategories had any relation to any items actually in the game.
The crafting material tab would benefit from having basic and crafted subcategories, to sort out the ancient bones from ancient focus casings.
Gathering and Tool are completely empty.
Thanks for your time.
