I just made a thread in the suggestions forum bringing some of these issues up. I. Could. Not. Agree. More!
I’m seriously starting to suspect that this game was originally designed with a level cap of 30, that was later stretched to 80 and padded out with those, “Ill conceived” traits that you mentioned.
I would do anything to see a reimagined trait/progression/skill system.
(edited by BananaMatrix.3702)
this kind of thing shouldn’t even be on their top 9001 priorities .
Their priorities are over 9000!!!!!! Oh, haha, I see what you did there. : B
To be perfectly honest, this seems more like a personal problem rather than anything wrong with the game. I’m also not entirely certain that regularly updating their Internet culture references is a priority for ArenaNet. I imagine they have their hands full enough as it is.
Maybe it’s just me who isn’t fussed by this though.
I think I understand what you mean. There’s a certain mystique or authenticity about the more conventional forms of travel; horseback, carriage, ship, etc. in this sense Asura gates seem like a terrible deus ex machina… And they are. But at this point I think they’re far too established in both gameplay and lore to renege on now.
You know I felt the same way.. leveling up to 30 is all fun then it just seems bland. I’m sure if Arenanet knew about this and wanted to fix it that they could.
I think they’re aware, and I think it was likely deliberate because of the way WvW works. Everyone gets leveled up to 80 in WvW, so if higher level traits and unlockables were significant and game-play altering enough it would put the lower level characters at a greater disadvantage… That’s my theory, at least… I really don’t think it works though, such a massive sacrifice.
I’d hate to use WoW as an example, but remember the talent trees? And how at the end of each one there was always something that made you insanely excited to level? GW2 traits, as they are now, are more like WoW traits were when it first released, petty and boring for the most part. The philosophy to make every talent interesting and significant came much later for Blizzard.
Firstly, great game with some really interesting features that, to my mind, have contributed greatly to promoting creativity and innovation within the MMO space.
Having said that, there are some aspects of the game that have lead to me, and my friends, playing less or leaving entirely for our old MMOs; chief among these would be the lack of player progression beyond level 30 (we’re big PvE players).
Before level 30 this game is great, I spend the first 15-20 levels trying out all the available weapon sets, mixing and matching and finding my favorites. Unlocking my utility skills is also new and exciting, it’s something to look forward to, to work towards! Then I hit level 30, get my elite skill and maybe work towards a few more utility skills, which often see little use when compared to my 1-5 weapon skills, which by this point are beginning to grow a little too familiar.
Now, I look ahead and realize I have nothing to look forward to in terms of progression. Oh sure, I have traits, but forgive me if I’m not especially excited for gameplay-altering changes like, “Dazes you inflict last 1 second longer”, “5% increased damage to inactive foes”, or “cloaking skills last 1 second longer”.
These don’t change up the way I play, I’m still using the same 1-5 skills the majority of the time, maybe switching to my other weapon-set occasionally and popping a utility or two, but they’re not something to call home about.
I’ve also noticed that trait lines and their specific strengths tend to have weapon sets that play to that strength the best, this greatly limits customization.
-
Solutions?
Unlockable weapon skills within trait lines that play to the line’s specific strengths. It’s a problem when your trait line enhances your poison damage, but your chosen weapon set doesn’t have a poison attack. If the attack itself was unlockable within the trait line, this wouldn’t be an issue.
Unlockable weapon sets within trait lines, maybe at level 40, 60, 80, something to keep the player interested, excited for the expanded possibilities that come with new usable weapons.
Get rid of straight damage/duration increase traits, or merge them with more interesting traits. Adding some procs, and a final game-changing trait at the end for a little more insentive.
Any other suggestions people have would be great! It’s an interesting topic.

I realize that much of this would create balancing issues throughout the game, especially in PvP, infact the reason progression stagnates at level 30 and your skill selection is so limited (i believe), is because it makes balancing PvP so much easier.
Never-the-less, I thought I’d put this here, I love this game, and it’s so close to being perfect! And yes, this is subjective, but from talking to people I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.

No, the sad thing is that 90% of the community doesn’t give a crab about anything. They are neither constructive nor supportive of anything unless it allows them to exploit or otherwise impede on other people’s enjoyment. It’s sad they people are so content with a stale life, playing stale games to compliment them… A large majority of the Guild Wars 2 community does not care where the game goes, as long as they do not have to log in and post anything, or add any comment with significant value…
Sorry. Just the sheer lack of care for this game disgusts me. I’m used to growing up when communities actually put heart into the games they loved.
You’ve gotta be kidding me, everyone has an opinion, and they’re giving them all over the place. Saying that 90% of the player base wants to impede another person’s enjoyment is insane too.
I guess you haven’t seen all the complaining/constructive criticism going on here in the suggestion forums. Or the same going on in /map chat, or private conversations among friends.
Don’t believe me? Message a random person in the game and ask them what they think could be improved about it, more often than not they’ll have an opinion. Most people don’t bring their suggestions here because either they think someone else would of already, or they don’t think ArenaNet will read/listen to them anyway.
Also, maybe add one on loading screens for those of us with longer loading times? :B
What do you mean by unique graphics? Also I found the loot pretty nice if you asked me.. I’ve played worse. xD
I mean unique graphics, for example the Ascalonian Clergy Cowl that I got from AC story mode is the same model as a number of other pieces of equipment in the game. I keep my equipment up to date every 5 or so levels. What I meant by that is dungeon loot isn’t significantly better than regular loot of the same level. I realize they said they were doing this because they wanted dungeon loot to be more for the looks, but this doesn’t make sense when the models are just recycled
First I’ll make a note that I’m not talking about end game dungeons, seeing as I haven’t had a chance to do them. A few changes that I think would make dungeon loot allot more worth while are:
1) Make all the bosses guaranteed to drop one of four or so unique rare items that can’t be found anywhere else
2) Give these items unique graphics
3) Buff these items so they’re worth the effort to get
I think this would be a much better way of handling this stuff!
I did the Eternal Battlegrounds jumping puzzle during the beta, which took a friend and me 2 hours. Now I can do it in about 20 minutes or so. You DO get better at these, and you ARE going to have trouble at first. Now I breeze through all jumping puzzles.
Practice makes perfect!
Pft, you tailless weirdos can have your stupid cloaks!… I didn’t want one anyway… :’(
You mean like reading and finding out lore, there is a ton of that in the game already
some of it is easy to find, some of it is pretty cryptic and some of it requires at least a bit of knowledge about Guild Wars 1 universe, there’s also the pieces of lore written in new krytan language with hints about people in history and sometimes they even contain clues as to where to find certain lore related things.
Well, something similar to this but having them behave more like collectibles that would fill out a codex. Sort of like a menu you could go through and read at your leisure.
Ooh, a tailor/barber would be awesome! Maybe even have some un-lockable hair styles, horns, etc through achievements.
I recommended this previously back during the beta, I believe. But here it is again!
I think it’d be a fantastic idea to have pieces of lore strewn throughout Tyria, in jumping puzzles, libraries, found in bags or who knows where?! Things like scrolls, diaries, ancient tablets, books and whatever else that would behave as collectibles to fill in a lore codex! They would divulge information about the world, characters, monsters, areas, etc. Sort of along the lines of Dragon Age or Mass Effect. It’d be a bit of an undertaking, of course, but maybe in future expansions? I can hope!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an MMO that has visible amulets, rings or earrings… Is it a technical restriction to do with the clipping of models? Even so, I thought I’d recommend it!
I can just imagine my Charr with earrings… We have four ears… Too bad we can only wear two earrings. :P
Oooh, YES! I would absolutely love this! I can’t tell you how many times I find something awesome that I’d like to make a note of! Great idea, Chafe.
It’s pretty bad, not worth using. I think it’d be a good idea to give it a bit of a damage boost, even if you make it a timed cast like the rifle F1 ability, which is pretty darn good!
It would be too hard to balance that way.
If you want different skills, just pick a different weapon.
It is not the playerbases decition or opion to say it would be too hard to balance. This is the developers issue to reslove not the player base. Yes the players might have some insite but they are not solving the issue.
Just pick a different weapon… NO THANKS. I like 4 of 5 skills and just hate other weapons. Weapons are linked to multiple skills. Picking a differnt weapon bring you multiple new skills. You can’t just pick and chose what you like.
Options are a good thing!
But that isn’t the developer’s problem.
They’ve given each profession a variety of weapons/attunement/toolkits for a reason. If you get bored of one, you’re supposed to play another. There are more than enough skills to chose from.
You can’t just say “I only like the sword, so give me more sword skills”. You have more skills, but you have to be willing to use other weapons. That’s how the game was designed.
I can’t agree with that, I don’t think the developers expect us to hop around between weapon sets when we get bored of one all the time. There’s going to inevitably be a particular setup that we’re most comfortable with. Infact, I can prove beyond any doubt that that’s not what ArenaNet intended.
Dagger/Dagger on Thief has a bleed and a poison. Sword/Dagger on Thief has neither. If you spec to become a Trickery Thief, your strength is in bleeds/poisons/CND DMG, so as a Trickery Thief I’m being encouraged to use Dagger/Dagger.
If we were to have more skills, perhaps it would open up my options a bit?
Yes… this is what others don’t like. Bleeding strike is no longer tied to a weapon. What is the point from going dagger / dagger to sword / dagger if you have replaced things like Bleeding strike with sword skills.
So you swap from dagger / dagger to sword / dagger and yet skill 1 is the same skill.
I did not miss the point as I get it. However if at level 51 the sword skill that unlocks has a bleed on it… now your bleed spec is more viable for sword and the skill that unlocks for sword is tied to that weapon.
In my first post when I said, "Of course that’d need some tinkering to give interesting boosts to any weapon sets you decide to use. "
What I was saying is they’d need to tinker these un-lockable skills to behave differently for each weapon set. “Bleeding strike” for example might not work very well with a ranged weapon like shortbow or pistol/pistol. I agree compeltely that weapon sets should have unique skills for them, I’d just like more unique skills, and why not work this in with new progression? Since it’s absent from 30-80 anyway!
Over all, like I said, these are off the top of my head, I’m just spouting examples! It’s not my job to balance these, and I haven’t sat down and written a working system that could be implemented tomorrow (which is why I haven’t made a thread), these are just examples of how traits could be more interesting/profession/gameplay altering
Some people have already fired back and do not like having skills that are not tied to the weapon. Having traits unlock skills for weapons would work, but really how is this much different then just adding the skill options per level range? The trait logic will hinder players from chosing another weapon if they are speced for extra skills via the trait they have unlocked.
The example of the Great sword… your logic just pigion holled that Warrior into using only a Great Sword. But then again traits do that anyway with X % improvement using weapon Y… so maybe it all is a pointless disagreement to begin with.
It’ll encourage players to choose other weapons!
For example, I’m a thief, I like sword/dagger… But I chose to be a Trickery Thief, which means my strength is in CND DMG… Sword/dagger is no good for that, but Dagger/dagger has a bleed and poison, meaning that ArenaNet is indirectly telling me this is the weapon set I’m “supposed” to be using.
If you had trait applicable skills that you could unlock instead, you could use whatever you want! Which means I could use sword/dagger, and just replace one of my weapon skills with the “Bleeding strike” I unlocked in my Trickery trait line!
And I think you missed what I was saying, I used the Greatsword as an example. You would also have “mace proficiency” or “sword proficiency” etc. And maybe even have some that would allow you to dual wield two-handers, who knows?! I’m not actually pushing any of these ideas to be added specifically, these are just examples off the top of my head of how traits could be more interesting. I could sit here and poke holes in them myself, that’s not the point.
A music box in our house that allows us to listen to all the tracks we’ve heard in the game so far too! To be honest I’m finding the home instance to be pretty lame at the moment, I haven’t really seen anything change, and I don’t feel like I’m having a massive affect on it…
So yeah, hearing NPCs gossiping about you as you achieve greater and greater things would be awesome! You saved the orphanage? Oh hey, this kid just ran up to me and gave me a little gift while thanking me! The little touches are nice.
Some more side quests would be nice too, ones that aren’t along the main story arc, and different ones would become available depending on which paths you choose.
I’ve also mentioned this before but, I’d love to see the factions you can join having mechanics surrounding them, at the moment they just behave as a stepping stone or plot device. Imagine if it was harder to gain reputation with them/go up through the ranks, and you had to complete side quests to do so, or wear the official order cape or tabard while running dungeons to grind rep… Yeah, I know, stolen from WoW, but it’s just an example! xD
And of course, as you gain higher ranks in that order, you gain access to different armor/weapon vendors and other perks!
Don’t limit this to just guilds though, I’m not in a guild and probably won’t ever be in one, maybe I should join one? Any matter, Airship combat would RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well… The game IS called Guild Wars, so expecting people to be in a guild Isn’t too unreasonable, I feel X:
I’m probably in the minority here, buuut~ I kind of like finding dyes, so I’m fine with the fact that with each new character I get to experience the excitement of finding them again
Hey, that’s not a bad idea! Once I hit 80 I quickly got bored and started a new character, but for the brief time that I was farming karma I was getting bored of that zone too.
Unfortunately, because of the instanced nature of the game, I don’t think this will be possible.
Although… If they were to build an island specifically for airship combat, something similar might work! But that’s a huge project
Instanced nature..? The only instances in GW2 are the home one, dungeons, and the ones used for your story..and maybe a few other random ones here and there. Unless youre mixing up zones with instances, which i feel like you are.

The upside to having a trading system that’s prone to scamming is that we get to weed out a**holes. But yeah, this definitely seems like a no-brainer, all for it!
This is a HUGE suggestion, I’m seeing it all over the place, even made a thread about it myself. If they do add more skills it should be worked into 30-80 progression, since nothing new happens during those levels at the moment.
Yep…
You could have;
31-40 weapons add 1 more skill
51-60 weapons add 1 more skill (+ the 31-40 weapons skill)
etc…
71-80 weapons would have 4 more skills then current to pick from. This could be taken further by having certain weapons at 80 that you hunt for that add 1 more skill… Making an even 10 skills per weapon to pick from.
To be honest I’d rather it be done in a little more interesting way, rather than just adding skills occasionally. For example, weapon skills that could be unlocked in trait lines, like my trickery thief getting a “bleeding slash”. At the moment the traits are rather boring.
Imagine if at level 60 we were able to access some traits that completely changed up how our class operated, for example for a thief, “You can now dual wield one-handed swords” maybe some more, “You can now wield maces”, y’know! Giving you more options!
Of course that’d need some tinkering to give interesting boosts to any weapon sets you decide to use. Unfortunately we’re in a situation where some weapon sets are just plain better with certain trait builds, having the skills un-lockable in trait lines instead of inherent to the weapons themselves, would solve this problem.
Edit: Let’s say I’m a Warrior using a Great sword, and I want to stick with it, there could be another trait that say, “You are now more proficient with Great swords, allowing you access to even greater skills”
(edited by BananaMatrix.3702)
I don’t personally find WTS/WTB messages annoying, since they’re usually just a few links posted in an otherwise dead /map chat. I’ve yet to see someone who actually “spams”, as in, repeatedly posts the same message over and over again. It’s not spam if they just post it once, and then again 10 minutes later.
Although, all we need is a /trade channel. Problem solved.

The default design for the great sword clips with my Charr’s back too, which could be fixed by rotating the hilt ever so slightly! Also there’s allot of leggings that aren’t designed for tails, sadness!
This is a HUGE suggestion, I’m seeing it all over the place, even made a thread about it myself. If they do add more skills it should be worked into 30-80 progression, since nothing new happens during those levels at the moment.
Your momma’s I.Q is so low that she thinks that differential thermal transmagirifying mechanisms are a subset of magiclimatic adaptation!… Sounds more like something an Asura would say xD
(edited by BananaMatrix.3702)
I agree with Furyan, instead of trying to hide the events from people, it sounds more like a scaling issue. Just improve the way in which events scale when more people are participating!

I was actually really shocked when I didn’t see fishing in the game. Aside from the great water visuals, every time I see a huge neutral fish when doing an underwater quest, I just want to wrestle it out of the water and cook it.
I think having a fishing rod added to the same gathering slots as axes, picks, and sickles, would be great. You could use fish in various crafts. For example, the scales from certain fish could be used for armor, or oils to polish/harden a bow. Of course, cooking would benefit from the seafood dishes.
I don’t think I’d like fishing as just another gathering profession. I’d rather have it as a mini-game! You could fish up old boots you could salvage, or occasionally little trinkets, white, blue, green or maybe even yellow and red items! Or messages in bottles with lore related text, maybe even old bound diaries from significant characters in the GW’s universe! There’s so many possibilities to make it a fun little time sync.
Whips are a GREAT idea! The graphics are already in game too, I believe there’s some whip wielding enemies in that Sylvari instance?

As far as little things go… FISHING! I want mykittenfishing! >w<
Is THAT supposed to protect them? I don’t think so! >.>
And how exactly is leather jacket going to protect anyone? Hmm? How about that skirt of mage? That won’t even protect him from cold, not to mention sword.
It’s a game. A fantasy. Nothing to do with reality. If one want to run arround naked – that’s his choice. After all he’s watching at his character ALL THE TIME. And you maybe will see it briefly or never.
I’m sorry, but a leather jacket and a g-string metal bikini are on entirely different levels of believability. But yes, I have a problem with some of the other armor in game too.
Wow, really? I’d like to know what sort of armor that person (people) would prefer.
To be honest, as a fantasy buff, skimpy female heavy armor gets on my nerves… Is THAT supposed to protect them? I don’t think so! >.>
So, so far the factions you join in your personal story feel more like a stepping stone or plot device for the story as a whole. I would LOVE to see that changed in a way that would make them a proper faction you could work your way up in, and maybe gain access to higher tier karma vendors within your chosen order!
There’s a few quests with your chosen factions at the moment, but they’re very limited and you advance through the ranks far too quickly. Having some optional side quests that would help you build renown with your order would be great, and a fun game-play mechanic all on it’s own.
I’d hate to use WoW as an example, but I seem to remember it had factions too, and that you would build reputation with them by wearing their tabard in a heroic dungeon, something similar in GW2 would be great! Since having side quests account for all of your reputation gains would be a little difficult.
Great idea! Same here! Not to mention a bank storage upgrade, if there isn’t one already? I admit I haven’t really had a proper look. Put them on the gem store, please! I would love an excuse to support this game by buying something off there, but so far nothing has piqued my interests.
I definitely like the idea of adding more skills! How about working in those new skills with the 30-80 progression? Since nothing new happens in that time-frame at the moment.
I don’t like the idea of having two different systems for PvE and PvP though… For some reason that just seems a little tacky, for lack of a better word.
Sounds good to me! The lack of skills and progression past level 30 are my biggest gripes with the game. If I can make a suggestion, how about adding some of these skills into the trait lines? I’ll explain;
I’m a trickery thief, so my strength is in CND DMG, but I like to use sword/dagger… But dagger/dagger has an amazing bleed and a poison, so ArenaNet is indirectly telling me that’s the weapon set I SHOULD be using. If the skills themselves were un-lockable in the trait lines, instead of inherent to the weapons, we could use whatever weapon combinations we want! Of course there’d have to be different incarnations for each weapon set… For example having a “Bleeding slash” un-lockable might not work very well for dual pistols.
Letting us pick weaponskills without actually changing the core game.

I’m all for having more weapon skill options, I do think it’s a problem that I’m playing my character in exactly the same way at level 30, as I am at level 80 (Unless I suddenly decide to change my weapon set, even traits don’t make much of a difference except in behind the scenes stuff)
Personally I’d not only like to see more weapon skills, but also a better trait system! I’d hate to use WoW as an example, but at a certain level you can get an ability as a Warrior called “Titan’s Grip” which allows you to wield a two-handed weapon in each hand! This changes up the way you play your character significantly.
The way GW2 is designed at the moment, the level cap should of been 30, the next 50 levels don’t add anything new.
Well, you could always convert to the dark side! My binding’s are:
5 = Q
6 = R
7 = F
8 = C
9 = Shift
It’s a really comfortable setup for me! Everything’s right around my left hand, and by this point my reactions are almost instinctive. Try it out!
Because of how zones are separated by portals, I don’t think this will be possible.
Although… If they were to build an island specifically for airship combat, something similar might work! But that’s a huge project

No ssd will not fix any fps issues, the only thing it will do is decrease loading times.
For better fps get better hardware.my hardware can hold mettro on max out with stable 40-30fps
gta iv – 50-60 fps maxed
crysis 2 60fps on ultra
bt3 and cod max out 60fpsi dont think that my hardware is the issue -_-
and the fps is good but after the loading or entering new ereas its lag hard for few seconds and there smooth agin
Have you tried placing a ticket with GW2 support? I’m sure they could help you pinpoint the problem!
I’m no expert, but I’m fairly certain a SSD will improve your loading times and nothing more. Could be completely wrong though! :B
How often do you get a green item? I got a truckload of it, others got a truckload of it, there are over 500 offers of green items, why should it sell for more then 1 silver?
Just throw them in the forge, that’s what I do… If they sell for less than 2 or 3 silver, I don’t bother.
Honestly, seeing the live action section and how serious it was made me roll my eyes. It’s a video game! You Americans, everything has to be sooo dramatic, I swear xD
