I was actually sorely disappointed there wasn’t SOME kind of pet evolution (whether simply cosmetic or whatever). It would have brought at least a tad of attachment to the pets you’d use instead of the throwaways they are currently.

Hm, my current main go-to armor set is Exotic Celestial. I was thinking getting Celestial Ascended would be a bit redundant even with the stat increase (and that Exotic Celestial is tedious as hell to craft so I kind of don’t want that set to become obsolete unless the stat increase is significant enough to justify replacing it).

I want to get back into GW2 a bit, so I figured something to do would be to try my shot at getting a full set of Ascended Armor.

I only want to invest time into a single set, so what would be the general consensus on the best bang for my buck here? Is it safe to assume to just get all Berserkers? (I almost always have full Ascended Celestial trinkets. I bounce between casual PvE/dungeons and roaming in EotM). Anyone’s 2 cents would be appreciated.

I’m just spitballing here, but what if instead of a stow-bonus, we get…a death bonus?

What if we get some sort of bonus like the OP posted but only once your pet died? Hear me out a bit:

It would still force you to utilize active pets as a key mechanic in gameplay, but if your pet does die, his spirit transfers some sort of specific bonus to you until it’s revived/certain duration maybe. This would help in areas of the game where you simply cannot keep your pet alive 100% of the time (zergs, some dungeons/events, etc.).

Just a random, possibly SUPER dumb idea. Also, I’m a little drunk #Ranger4life

Guys, DON’T spam F2. Just hit it once. Hitting it repeatedly as if in a panic will cancel the ability and put it on cooldown. I found that out a while ago after binding my F2 to mousewheel down.

I’m fairly sure Torment sigil scales off condition damage just as Fire scales off power, so for a zerker, Fire is probably more efficient on a zerker build.

Ah man Durz, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong then. I’ve tried testing the effect about 20 times now in both PvE and in the mists, and couldn’t get it to trigger even once. Even did the old re-equip swap in case it still wasn’t applying.

A wolverine or dire bear pet that “frenzies” and periodically gains increased attack, attack speed and durability the longer it constantly fights.

A skelk pet that “blinks” behind a target and backstabs

I’ve always seen Lycanthrope as the melee predatory ranger, to be honest. A role I’ve always loved the idea as a ranger-pet-class.

I’ve been saying and wanting something like this since start, and I actually thought this was supposed to be part of the ranger mechanic before the release and betas.

An evolution mechanic would make me feel more emotionally attached to my pet rather than my Juvenile Lynx looking exactly like that other ranger’s Juvenile Lynx (both named Juvenile Lynx because, you know, pet names).

For general PvE I use River Drake + Cat.

For smaller scale WvW skirmishes I use Wolf/Spider + Jaguar/Snow Leopard.

WvW Zerging I use Drake + Carrion Devourer

Regarding keeping it alive, I’ve gotten significantly more skilled in recalling my pet back to me to avoid AoE circles and what not. Sure it’s difficult to keep track of in larger scaled situations, but it does boost their survival much more. I try to minimize swapping-for-survival as much as possible.

1. Increase the attack speed rate of GS #1 to make up for it’s lack of raw damage. I desperately want the GS to have the potential for primary use.

2.) Fix the River Drake pet’s skin. The current skin it uses is the Rock Drake from the Charr lands. Switch it to the actual River Drake skin found in Queensdale.

3.) Continue to improve pet AI in any way.

4.) Addition of a new ranged pet designed for higher damage/aoe (something with a chain-auto-attack maybe)

5.) Addition of a new ranged pet designed for back-line buffing/healing (just add a moa that vomits arrows at a 900 range or something)

I’ve always loved the idea of making Maul a blast finisher.

I’ve also fantasized about increasing the attack speed of #1 (NOT its damage) as well as adding an effect on the second hit in the chain (a condition? a pet buff? or what about a mini-whirl finisher, eh??).

I just really really want the GS in general to be more versatile and have more potential as a primary weapon in a broader range of play styles.

Just to see what all you rangers are doing, I’d like to have anyone who’s interested to post in this thread three things:

1.) If this is for PvP, PvE, or WvW

Try your best to stay general without going too much into details. I’m mostly interested to see how people’s choice of Runes and orbs relate to their play style (whether it’s for combat efficiency, affordability, or even role-playing purposes).

If this helps at all, some dyes that I’ve commonly used as filler or on things I simply didn’t know what else to dye are: Tarnished Steel, Ash, Charcoal, Mudmetal/Rawhide, and Cocoa.

Agreed. The way pets are in general have no immersion with you as a player as it is. They don’t level or evolve or anything, they don’t advance visually, and the only way their stats somewhat increase permanently is via Beastmastery. Add in the names not saving and there’s nothing charming about pets at all from an immersion perspective. They’re just Juvenile trash mobs that have no personality. At LEAST name saving would have been something at all.

I actually had a similar idea as this!

My twist on it though was to have an “Aspect” mechanic.

It would be the same as it is now, where you can only “equip” two aspects at any time (like how you can only equip 2 pets). Whatever Aspect you have active gives a bonus passive effect and +stats associated with it plus an F2 activation.

For example:

A ranger may equip “Aspect: Brown Bear” in one slot, and the passive effect would be “chance to gain regeneration on melee attack”, +Vitality & +Power stats, and like you’ve suggested, the F2 would be the aoe condition removal (and maybe go so far as summoning an actual bear/spirit that acts as a temporary pet).

All bears would have the same passive and +stats. Only the F2 would differ from bear to bear.

And with the ability to equip 2 of these at once, you could switch to whatever your play style/situation calls for.

So after watching the live stream preview today, I think this fun mode of play will be right up my alley, being a huge fan of co-op defense games and modes in general.

With ranger in mind (my main character), I’m thinking trap builds are going to be kinda awesome for this. I’m contemplating partnering up with my warrior friend for this and going a sword/x + cat/spider to be on looter-killer duty while my friend works on killing the adds. I was also thinking of shortbow + wolkitten

da excited to be honest. Have any of you started thinking about cool setups for Trials Challenge yet?

I was fighting a mesmer the other day. My jaguar was chasing him up a short incline. Well of course my jag couldn’t follow him, so he went the long way around to chase him (that’s not the idiot part). When he got to him and started attacking, the mesmer then jumped down to my ground level taking only slight fall damage.

But not my pet.

My jaguar VIOLENTLY spazzes down the side of the short cliff face, takes what looks like a dozen fall damage hits in quick succession, hits the ground level then screams and dies.

Both myself and the mesmer just stopped and watched it. He laughed. I sighed.

My biggest issue is that all the money from the gem store doesn’t directly support Anet and GW2. It directly supports NCSoft, who uses those funds as they wish whether for GW2 or any of their other titles (Lineage, Wildstar, etc). It wasn’t until recently when NCSoft finally gave the go ahead to START plans for an expansion in 2014.

It’s always been like this. Pets have to “acquire” the target all over again after being swapped, which takes like half a second. If you activate their F2 too soon, they simply execute it without a target (although birds’ F2 will still land if they were swapped directly on top of an enemy. More from happening to be on the hitbox rather than targeting).

If I ever do bring a drake into WvW, I bring Marsh. The F2 still hits the intended target at any angle (even directly behind the drake) at a 900 range. MUCH less of a hassle to manage than the other drake F2s.

However, successfully landing the river drake’s F2 once or twice has made me laugh hysterically.

After reading an opinion piece from killtenrats about all this temporary content, I’ve come to accept and even like the concept. My main is my ranger, and I’ve done all the temporary stuff so far completely with him.

In a way, it’s like my grizzled ranger can walk into a tavern and start telling stories about the campaigns he’s been in to the younger adventurers that missed it. My character actually has a history within the game world. I like that A LOT.

Given the mechanics in this dungeon (AoE dodging, jumping, maneuvering, etc), what pets have you guys taken with you and utilized in the new dungeon?

For me it’s been Drake & Jaguar up til the bosses, then to any combination of Fern Hound, Red Moa, Spider, and Devourer (hound & moa on passive, utilized for F2 buffs and/or vigor on bird swap).

I enjoyed it as well. I think future (and current) dungeons should be made with a combination of inspiration from SAB and this Molten Alliance dungeon. I actually feel like I’m on an adventure in both of those compared to the original dungeons in terms of pacing and mechanics.

In PvE I almost always run jaguar and marsh drake. Jaguar specifically for Carnivorous Appetite (pets gain health on critical hits). Cats crit often thanks to their faster attack speed, and if my jag gets low on health I pop his F2 and he’ll rapidly regain his hp back.

Same applies to marsh drake but thanks to his aoe he’s almost guaranteed to at least crit once per attack in mobs and makes him even more durable (plus marsh drake’s F2 is the only drake ability that can home-in and still hit enemies no matter where they move, even directly behind the drake)

In WvW (small skirmishing) I run raven + wolf. I’ve found the F2 burst damage from the raven to be more effective than cats against players for my playstyle. In zerg warfare, it’s kinda rough. I’ll usually just run a spider + devourer and try my best to utilize them without them dying.

This is the perfect thread for me to keep my eye on as I’ve been contemplating an all celestial setup.

My question is, is trying to get as close to celestial stat spread with armor pieces viable to go along with full celestial trinkets? Or is it not worth it since you don’t get as much total stats as you do with actual celestial items?

What if there was a banner trait that, when you summoned your banner, an NPC companion would appear with it in his hands and follow you, granting the buffs? Think Captains from LotrO. But the trade-off is that your npc companion could be killed, and if killed, the banner would be gone too. The companion would be completely passive, and you had no control over it. It simply followed you (and every time you summoned him he’d be of a random race).

General PvE: Marsh Drake (F2 hits at any angle + long range) and Jaguar (Jag’s F2 has good synergy with Carnivorous Appetite, mostly for when low on health)

Dungeon: Whichever the group benefits the most from, then at least a Spider or Devourer in boss fights

WvW (Solo/Group): Wolf and Jag
WvW (Zerg): Spider and Jag
WvW (Keep Defense): Wolf and Reef Drake (their F2 abilities go through the main gate)

I may give Hyena a whirl now after reading everything here.
Also, if you can land a poison cloud (i.e., with the Carrion Devourer) onto a buncha mobs or onto a boss/vet while you’re Rampaging, you can EASILY and QUICKLY get 25 stacks of might.

I’d have to agree somewhat with Seras. A whip as a main physical weapon sounds and looks (in my head, anyway) a little silly. I like the idea of a whip offhand, though. Something that (like others have said) is either pet-enhancing-heavy or control heavy. I mean shoot, we have whips from that event in one of the charr maps where you have to train devourers, and the lightning whip animations from elementalists. We’re halfway there!

After playing with this build for a while with a superior rune of the grove set, I think I may invest in a Melandru rune set. To be truly honest, conditions are the only real significant issue I have while playing this build. I think that rune set + sigil of generosity on my shortbow + healing spring is a better load out for me for condition management. Perhaps even in severe situations, a -40% con duration food. There’s still no way I’d ever purchase a full Divinity rune set. Way too much money for me, unfortunately.

It’s been calculated in a couple other threads that Rapid Fire is mostly only effective at short to short-medium range. At medium-long to max range, your auto-attack will be on par (or higher) in damage in the same time it takes RF to finish. Just something to keep in mind.
