It saddens me greatly that story was removed, but it makes me happy to see that I’m not the only one passionate about this. Hopeful, ANet will see that the story MATTERS to us players, and then do the right thing and revert all the changes.
I’d rather they sit down with the chapters, two pots of coffee, and figure out how to smooth it out even if it means cutting things or having to go beg VAs to get back in the studio to shoot more content and adding things.
I don’t understand why people were so attached to the Fear storylines. They weren’t all that impressive. Only one of them had any real value to the story as a legitimate threat. The other two felt entirely tacked on and super rushed.
Apatia swims around and gets captured. Or she goes for the caravan, gets captured, and you do all the work to accomplish the mission without her anyways. She literally accomplished the fewest things in the story arc she appears in of anyone in the entire game. Faren is more useful and memorable than Apatia.
Tonn’s story just had no closure. It’s a buddy cop drama where you have to sit through a bunch of dad jokes, put together a special explosive to accomplish the same effect as a single trebuchet attack on Claw Island, and then he just vanishes. Dead, apparently. From the explosion? From the Krait? Did the undead get him? Who knows? He’s just dead now. How is that heartbreaking? It’s just confusing.
If they actually want to rework the fear storylines and make them relevant, then by all means, but I’m certainly not torn up about losing either of those two.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Golem Chess come back at one point. The cities need more mini-games.
How about making actual chess tables in the city, which any player could walk up to and play? I mean, Chess-Chess; the real Chess.
I’m not going to sit in a virtual park at a virtual chess table to play. I’ll just go to the chess tables at the park. Or to one of the giant chess boards with the waist-high (well for other people, more like knee height for me) pieces.
My hot water heater is called a hot water heater…but it only heats cold water. Hot water doesn’t need to be heated.
What something’s called doesn’t equate to why it was designed. Colin was pretty clear about player retention for people just starting being a problem and it had to be fixed. Presumably because they’re going to have a free trial and they want that experience to hold more people.
I don’t know why you’d think that meant someone already at level 8 or 9 who experienced the old system already would like this one better. Particularly if a bunch of experienced vets are knocking it.
I used to work at a retail store selling water heaters and this redundancy always annoyed me. They are called water heaters in the usa, not hot water heaters. Being from the usa yourself and being a man of a language, I’m sure you already knew that though.
He is not from the USA.
I am, and people frequently call them hot water heaters, redundancy or no, where I am from. How did you become annoyed by the redundancy if people did not use the phrase ?
He said “My hot water heater is called a hot water heater”. No, it’s not. Even the manufacturers refer to them as water heaters. If I started calling my computer screen a picture screen, it doesn’t mean it’s called a picture screen.(“What something’s called doesn’t equate to why it was designed.” makes it sound like he was referring to hot water heater being the actual name of the appliance.)
He’s from the USA. He moved from the USA to Australia 10 years ago. When you’re 52 years old and move to another place only 10 years ago, I would definitely still say you’re from the USA.
I got all of this information from his posts over the years haha.[/quote]
Different states use different terminology depending on the heritage of the population living there. It may annoy you, but in my area, they do call them hot water heaters. Just because they don’t refer to them as such in your area doesn’t mean that your terminology is universal in this country.
As a programmer for a software company, you have to have thick skin just to deal with the teasing and jokes from your coworkers. It’s not like it’s unfriendly abuse, but it definitely requires a knowledge of the people around you and people who don’t like the environment don’t stay in it long. Sorry if it’s confusing, it’s a hard environment to describe but everywhere I’ve worked in shows the same kinda friendly snideness.
I’m sure that thick skin transcends to customers as well.

We need someone to organize pixel art.
No Tonn?! Good grief; that was one of the story threads that really choked me up. It was well done and heartbreaking; he was a great character who I actually did wish I could spend more time with.
If he is removed, it’s rather ignoble, all things considered.
EDIT: If it’s just a bug, then sigh of relief. I’ve a character or two nearing this point in the story, so I’ll have a look and see.
Personally, having never liked the Fear storylines to begin with, I don’t get how Tonn’s was gripping or well done. It was a buddy cop drama with “And he’s dead for no reason you ever see” and then you tell his wife who runs into Risen, despite being a Pact medic who should be all too familiar with death and the life they chose.
Very, very cliche, and it always felt forced and rushed to me. The Fear storylines always felt like a gigantic stumbling block to just stretch out the PS a liiiiiitle more. The only one that was really decent and actually seemed like it had some potential impact was the line you go down choosing Failure, which had the potential to shatter a fragile alliance that hadn’t been tempered. The other two just felt like “also rans” as far as any immersion in the story.

lol what’s a 6 year old doing playing computer games, its a sign!
Fun Fact:
" the average six-year-old child understands more about digital technology than a 45-year-old adult"
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/07/ofcom-children-digital-technology-better-than-adultsThe 6 year olds aren’t (officially) allowed to play for another 6 years (Pegi 12) but many 50 + year olds who have no interest in jumping or dodging are. The 6 year old is probably pretty good at dodging and jumping.
Yet for some reason having a max (as opposed to a minimum) age for a game would cause outrage. Nothing against the older player (and this is talking averages here, not individuals)… it’s just a curious thing to think about.
…
What does this have to do with the ratings? Games aren’t rated by mechanical skill, they’re rated by the content the player is exposed to. And the ESRB and PEGI want parents to be aware of the content presented to people in a game rated T if they choose to give it to children below that rating.
they did the same thing in GW1, instead of having animations appropriate to the situation all they used are basic animations.
i would actually like to see an option for more animations, not just idle but also walking/running ones. (not just NPC’s but also players)take the running animation of the sylvari for instance, it’s like they can’t get forward without swinging their arms like an idiot…
But that’s how I run IRL…
FOV doesn’t bother me.
Well I can guess what happened today.
I’ve never had that experience from a game. The only times I’ve felt painfully excluded occurred in active social situations. There’s not been a game that I’ve been invested that my character was the center or have had emotional pain if it was excluded.
I attribute it mostly to being in game development for about five years now at various places and states, but I never got that immersed in a game to that extent even before then. Movies or television I don’t get immersed in either, so take it as you will, usually I get bored with them pretty quick (movies and TV, not games). Books are about the only media I’ve ever gotten a deep emotional immersion in.
I’m not bragging, I’m just stating that I’ve never experienced that phenomenon personally. Anecdotally. It’s probably also due to the fact that in books I’m used to mostly being an observer.

Blizzard released MoP to appeal to Chinese market. And here NCSoft don’t wan’t to offend Chinese market by releasing Cantha. Okay.
PS. If those rumours are true ofc.
The big difference there is that NCSoft (who owns Anet) is Asian and Blizzard is not….
The choice to make game content that could be offensive to an Asian market would be VERY different between a US based and Korean based company.
Blizzard had to jump through hurdles to get China to accept MoP.
Basically what it boils down to is one Asian culture or another has dominated the continental area at one given point in history or another, depending on what culture was ascendant at the time. Particularly as a result of the occupation of Japan during WWII in most areas, China and Korea are now wary of having their cultures homogenized with Japanese culture by the western world, since that was attempted within memorable history and is still a very sore subject (understandably) by a lot of the elders of their respective society. Basically Japan attempted to erase culture much like Germany attempted to for Europe, and they don’t want western societies to implement sterotypes or representation that makes China and Korea look like “generic Asian area 50987”
On a side note, if you haven’t seen Monument Men, it’s fantastic and you should really watch it.

Actually, you could say that Rox = Scooby Doo & Frostbite = Scrappy Doo

We don’t know the full natures of the dragons.
We don’t know if they can actually die or just go back to sleep.Maybe we didn’t kill Zhaitan, maybe we only put him back to sleep.
I wouldn’t put it past ANet to go back and claim Zhaitan is still alive though, given how much of a mess that PS ending was. lol They probably want to retcon that.
Given that they stated they weren’t satisfied with it due to time constraints, I’d not blame them.
Seems to me like people think a hero has to do everything all by themselves.
It feels like there have been sooo many movies and shows, comics displaying the importance of the hero not doing everything by themselves, all recently.
I liked to joke that Avengers was Iron Man 3 (before Iron Man 3 came out), but really who can you say was the main hero there.
The answer is always Hulk.
Also I never notice if my character is voiced or not. The times I actually listen to voice acting in a game are counted on one finger. That was DQ VIII.
Maybe when the queen is killed, an ancient human magic is broken allowing demons from the Mists to begin invading Tyria, and then we have take the Locket to the Blades… err Shining Blade, and help them track down the heir before the demons. Then the heir uses the magic of the locket to turn into Glint’s baby or something, I don’t know. Then, Glint Jr. gives us the power to head north and yell at Jormag until he dies.
Too much skooma, this one.
Though if people keep insisting to me there are only five human gods, I might have to wonder.
There are four lights!
Pretty sure this has been discussed and dismissed in the Lore forums several times.
Because you know…it’s…
It’s at Fort Concordia…
Please no phasing. It’s always miserable in any game it’s implemented in.
They’ve stated that the new Journal content will be for level 80s as a form of end-game.
Calys, that’s different. Arthur Conan Doyle did it because he HATED writing Sherlock Holmes and wanted a way to end it. Also, in effectively every adaptation with a Moriarty he’s shown somewhere near the beginning as a perfect counterpart to the detective and usually a very well written one at that.
I know. He wrote in Moriarty specifically to kill Sherlock off, but that doesn’t mean that Moriarty isn’t a terrible character that came out of nowhere after years of establishing Holmes as the most brilliant mind in Europe.
It’s just an establishment of facts and how this isn’t a unique situation to Guild Wars. I have no idea what’s going on, but this isn’t a new concept as far as lore goes in general.
The movies are the canon. The books may or may not be.
The game is the canon. The interviews may or may not be.
It’s always been this way for any game. Changes happen. Conflicts of information happen. When there’s a conflict, the established source is easier to work with than an interview as far as further development is concerned.
(edited by Calys Teneb.7015)
I just hoped that if developer in charge of lore says something in interview, he/she knows what he/she is talking about. It’s not like they talk about whatever they want, they must clear that with team, whatever those are things that they can reveal. If they intend to change them better not to say them. If they already did, they should try work around it. Blatant contradiction is lazy.
Look at the Star Wars EU.
LucasArts had to approve all the books and comics that were published by Dark Horse or Del Ray. They were in charge of setting up writer interviews and basically dictated what would or would not be written about.
Two examples that come to mind is Lucas personally forbidding Yoda’s species to ever be defined. Another is he didn’t want a character named Anakin being a major player as the authors had planned because he felt it would confuse people.
Now, however, a lot of those books and comics and what have you is going to be invalidated, even though LucasArts previously established it as canon, as new movies are going to be made and the movies are the baseline of canon, not the books. So they’re going through twenty five years or so of established canon and throwing a bunch of it out, even though they previously approved it. Boba Fett in particular being canonically pronounced dead, if they decide that, would completely wreck a lot of what’s been written, as he’s been a recurring major player.
Sometimes you don’t know what’s going to change in the future, whether you’re the director of the writing staff or you’ve established an entire universe for people to write in.
OP might blow thing out of proportions, but not so much. Up to this point we were sure that what devs say in interviews is true. Now it’s said that all of it may or may not be wrong. Clarification what is canon and what was thrown out would be much appreciated in this point.
Nothing’s thrown out out of hand. What he said is if there’s a conflict, go with what’s in the game. That’s been standard operating procedure for any game, movie, or book. If another source conflicts with the original, go with the original.
I’ve always treated interviews with any developer as ambiguously canon.
I hope she does come back. Scarlet isn’t a bad character at all.
My main issue is that, out of nowhere, there’s a character that can literally do everything, and although the story keeps insisting we thwarted her, the voice acting never made me feel like we did anything to her at all. At best it felt like the ‘good guys’ were trying to convince themselves.
So, you mean like Moriarty. Suddenly a guy who is as good as Holmes who was never in any stories except the one he killed Holmes off in.
I would like to see a “beats” races where you just have all the minor human like beats become playable.
A race of poorly constructed and overly marketed headphones?
The reason you can see more pro-dueling threads is that those anti-dueling don’t create threads. If everyone who was against Open-World dueling created a thread, I don’t think your premise would hold much weight.
People don’t create threads much asking for features that are already in the game. Lol.
No to dueling for all the reasons expressed in all the previous threads.
I didn’t saw any reasonable reason so why you dont tell me 1? All the reasons i saw were " It doesn’t go well with the story" – duh?, “im lazy to click on block duel button”.Whats your story?amuse me pls.
My reason for not wanting duels is so I can watch people like you QQ in the forums.
GW2 certainly has the best community.
I know right. That is the reason we are not getting duels :/
i dont think that’s the reason we’re not getting duels, but it is disheartening that so many people buy and perpetuate the “duels = harassment/ego stroking/12 year old duel spammer” claims.
It’s been about a month in wildstar for me and i still haven’t gotten a single duel request. It’s a great feature but the claims on these boards about inevitable and widespread harassment, or dueling only being a tool used to bother others are outlandish. I realize i’m only one person, not the best sample size, but going into it based on what i read on these boards i expected to have been called a coward for refusing a duel request at least once by now.
Meanwhile I get at least five an hour any time I’m in a city or quest hub.
in wildstar? Are you sure you’re not confusing gold spam with duel requests? (j/k)
has it created an issue for you? have you taken advantage of auto-decline?
It has auto decline? I’ll have to find it.
Think about it, who was responsible for Lion’s Arch being destroyed? Kiel.
I’m not seeing this. Kiel was the one warning the Captain’s Council once evidence of the attack was delivered. While we were told that should Evon have been elected LA would have stood a better chance, it isn’t Kiel’s fault that LA was unprepared but the rest of the Captain’s Council.
Now who was responsible for organizing the trade agreement, only to have the cargo filled with explosives? Kiel.
Who said that the explosives came from the cargo?
Who benefits from the money raised by the Zephyrites to rebuild LA? Kiel.
All of Lion’s Arch, rather than just Kiel.
Who benefits from the money raised by the Zephyrites to rebuild LA? Kiel. Now that all the money was transferred to the Captain’s Council, she had no further need for them, so she blew up the airship, ala the Consortium ship in Southsun Cove’s LS.
She blew up a ship that had no one on board and in turn destroyed a bunch of paper contracts that kept refugees effective prisoners on an island full of hostiles.
Not exactly close to how you’re painting it.
So the running joke on the forums is that Smooth is an Evon shill. Every now and then he’ll write one of these theories to continue the joke, it’s just been a while since he’s had any material to work with.
The reason you can see more pro-dueling threads is that those anti-dueling don’t create threads. If everyone who was against Open-World dueling created a thread, I don’t think your premise would hold much weight.

The game is dead because the lack of mounted cape wrestlingNot dead – B2P games with no sub are never dead as you can always come back to them.

Buying or NOT buying off the gem store is not about sending Anet any message. it’s about How I do not want to support what I do not enjoy.
If anet Understands that is awesome. If they decide to Look Into why the game is losing players, and makes decisions I agree with, I become a happier player, and spend More.
it’s that simple. I do Not reward with money what doesn’t entertain me.
Do you have a link showing that they’re losing players? Especially after they just brought Chinese players onboard.
Megaserver
That’s speculation, not proof. ESO launched with Megaserver, while Wildstar launched with inzone instancing. Any sort of motives can be attributed to server styles, but server styles themselves aren’t proof of motive.
(edited by Calys Teneb.7015)
And yet there are threads in this very forum that ask for Anet to expand more on intricacies of the game. Yes, it’s not relevant to you, but it could simply be an attempt to provide more tutorial style information that’s skimmed over that is much more difficult to code into the game at this point in development.
Given that it’s not really promoting the new content of Season 2, it would be my guess it’ s not intended to be a “come back” email.
I’m not quite sure you’re seeing the parallels between yourself and those you consider “content lobbyists.” You’ve consumed what’s important to you, and you want more. If more development is added to your portion, at some point you’ll out grow it as you state others will, as development on PvP, Guild content, and other issues can only be done so fast as well.
You dismiss the legitimate desires of others in favor of your own. That’s not how development operates. You are only seeing what’s important to you, others see what’s important to them, and neither is more important. Neither is more “right.” All parties have different priorities for the game that they want to see improved on, just because one doesn’t see the point in developing aspects of the game they don’t enjoy doesn’t mean people who enjoy those areas should be dismissed.
As many tools as Guild Wars had for guilds and PvP, they didn’t neglect dungeons and PvE.
I’m fairly certain that asking to expand the world beyond the current map is a fairly reasonable request that most MMOs pursue. Very few MMOs remain in a static world state and focus entirely on social development.
You’re still asking for new content by virtue of upgrading, adding onto, or improving those game elements. So you’re not asking for developers to not make new content, you’re simply asking them to devote more time to the content you feel is important.
One of the major reasons that Duke Nukem Forever didn’t do well at all (other than being a terrible game) is because the character vastly outlived the time period when he would have been appreciated.
As a thirty one year old gamer, I don’t find uber-macho stereotypes like Nukem or Rambo who spout bad one liners and lewd comments nearly as compelling as I did when I was ten. I don’t find Hulk Hogan characters who are beaten down and then suddenly become immortal interesting in even a fantasy game. It doesn’t even make good television anymore.
It’s not simply an age thing, it’s been twenty years since that sort of stereotype was even relevant in movies, much less video games.

I think the Inquest is quite an interesting villian faction, because they arent truly evil. But i also believe they wont be a major antagonist in LSS2, propably they only want to get their hands on that shiny dragon-power, but i dont think the Inquest would ever become an obedient servant of Mordremoth or another dragon. It is even possible that we will work together with the Inquest somedays if we share a goal with them…

Best: Really fun toys to play with
Worst: Dunno…maybe dungeons? That’s not really fair though because I don’t enjoy dungeons in any game.
I really loved how GW1 forced you to have a two part name. It was as if every person had a first and last name and helped a little to reinforce a unique identity with each toon.
One word names, especially stupid ones you pointed out, feels wrong, like a verb or adjective slapped over someone’s head
I don’t care for forced last names. NPCs tend to always refer to you by both names, which doesn’t happen with people you’re familiar with IRL. Even strangers don’t do it past a greeting.
That reminds so much of the movie Demolition Man where people were always addressed by their full names. It frequently came to mind during GW1.
I don’t go by either of my names IRL, so it’s very strange to me when people address me by even my first.

I recently re-activated my account, and am having a pleasant time playing the game. I enjoy that I can solo farm mats for my tradeskills, and don’t have Blizzard’s hands In My Pocket along each and every stage

You enjoy gw2 as it is, I enjoyed Gw2 as it used to be. Lately… I do not enjoy it as much, and the irony is… i have come to appreciate a Lot of things that WoW does well. At least well for me… things I enjoy are viable in WoW.
I can understand your enjoyment of Gw2. I can understand your desire to play it. What I fail to Understand is why you have to trash another game, or the people that play it. Especially since the free to play aspects of Gw2 are such, that a person can play BOTH.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but have you not been trashing GW2 since your enjoyment of it dropped off, while singing the praises of other games?
I have never TRASHED Gw2. Nor have I put down anyone that enjoys playing it. What I have done , is point out why…in my opinion, Gw2, is not as enjoyable for me as it used to be.
There is a difference between trashing a gamne, and providing constructiver criticism.
seems that anytime a fanboi trashes a " competing game " people rally around them, but someone says " well, I think WoW is good because of this , this, this and this…and Gw2 is weak In those areas.’ instead of it being seen for what it is… constructive criticism…the fanboiz come in to attack that individual.

Sorry, I don’t agree that the comment you considered “trashing WoW” was anything other than his opinion was that WoW created a feeling of stagnancy, which is something that when paraphrased, you seem to feel about GW2.
I feel that this is over-sensitivity.
His tone and word choice about World of warcraft is more along the lines of trashing. I guess we need to agree to disagree
shrug It appears that there are others who feel your tone could be taken the same way. Perhaps it’s something you should consider as well.
That is another thing that we will have to agree to disagree on.
Which? Not considering your tone of discourse or disagreeing that people read you that way? Open minded and accepting of dissenting opinions is key to offering constructive criticism. A difference of opinion is not a war to be won.

I recently re-activated my account, and am having a pleasant time playing the game. I enjoy that I can solo farm mats for my tradeskills, and don’t have Blizzard’s hands In My Pocket along each and every stage
That’s a matter of perspective. In mine, if Blizzard didn’t have it’s hands in my wallet every step of the way, I wouldn’t be allowed access to the game.
So No…I have not been, nor have I ever TRASHED Gw2…. nore have I trashed anyone that plays Gw2. But I see this for what it is, the beginnings of the fanboiz brigade coming to the rescue of one of their own that in deed DID trash another game.
Sorry, I don’t agree that the comment you responded to and considered “trashing WoW” (and I mean specifically in those words previously in this thread) was anything other than his opinion was that WoW created a feeling of stagnancy for him, which is something that when paraphrased, you seem to feel about GW2.
I feel that this is over-sensitivity.

It’s very hard for me to be a vagrant when there’s no guild hall that I can avoid going to
Anyone below 3rd(?) place can not afford a mistforged weapon, so they have to buy the lesser weapon now and then they can upgrade it after the next tournament. The extra small price of mats is the cost of losing.
Actually with the bonus tickets, I beleive even last place can afford one Mistforged.
yay i got it. They could have been more specific regarding this
Doesn’t the mail say to speak to a battle historian in any battleground?
It’s there in order for people who can only get a Hero’s Weapon to upgrade later for the same price point when they obtain more tickets.
It may be worth it to check again now that people are claiming their rewards, just in case.
