No1 tells u do not enjoy the playstile u like.

Actually in this thread there are people suggesting exactly that… for some using an axe offhand is ground for auto-kick as a know-nothing.

GW2 is a simple simple game… when you’ve done naked corpse run to the bottom of a dungeon in vanilla EQ… GW2 is an incredibly easy game… If you like using the axe in the offhand, really just use it. No groups in PvE are failing because the Warrior is using an axe offhand. Really, stop the angst-ridden, obsessive nonsense.

If you’re getting bent out of shape over what Warriors are using in their off-hand, you’ve lost perspective and are making a mountain out of a tiny wee molehill… find something more important to worry about.

All weapon-sets for the Warrior are viable in PvE.

Whatever you class, please play with the build, the gear, and the weapon-set that you think feels fun and looks cool. Don’t let other people suck the fun out of your game. It doesn’t matter when you’re running around as a pointy eared plant-man whether or not you’re being sub-optimal…. Do you have a smile on your face?

I run axe/axe and rifle mostly in PvE (I’ll use whatever weapon-set takes my fancy at the time), and if it offends you by all means kick me.

It’s an action fantasy mmorpg, it’s fun and entertaining. It’s not rocket science, and no chicks are going to be chatted up in bars with tales of my Sylvari Warrior’s exploits.

I enjoy all the weapon-sets on the Warrior, and I use them all and switch when I get bored. If that offends you, you really need to get over yourself and perhaps gain a little perspective on what the purpose of a game is. This is not vocational. It possesses no virtue beyond the enjoyment it affords. This is not significant, it’s fun.

I thought it a good write-up in general, but the point about bleed stacking for a Warriors I felt was just pulled out of the air. I play war/thief/ranger, and I think the bleed stacking on the Warrior might be the best of the 3 of them. The sword is not shabby applying bleeds, trait for bleed chance on crit, trait for +50% duration of bleeds, both in a branch you want for bleeds…. that’s just as a base before you get serious about stacking bleeds.

Warriors don’t really need to pay attention to bleeds because they have so much up front damage dealing ability. It is an after-thought for many Warriors but that’s nothing to do with the mechanics or swords.

I’m starting to feel myself get older. I can’t twitch like I used to, the nervous system simply ages.

The “zerker or kick” emphasis that has a strangle-hold on dungeons in GW2 has me avoiding dungeon groups and waiting on the next MMO. Without some toughness and vitality I pancake in a dungeon.

I wasn’t aware my getting older was selfish.

It’s okay that dungeons in GW2 have an emphasis on twitch, not every game has to be for everybody. There’s plenty in GW2 to hold me until the next thing. I’m enjoying the new arena content.

There are plenty of players with more experience, but I play a Guardian, Ranger, Warrior, Thief, and Mesmer at level 80, so I have an opinion.

Ranger has the deepest and widest variety of issue imho… I’ll tell you why I think this happened.

During beta and when the game first launched, there was a small fraction of the experience with the game as there currently is. Dungeons for example were regarded as incredibly hard to the point were this forum was flooded with complaints about how hard they were. ANet stuck to their guns and said that feedback from their beta-testers told them if anything the dungeons would need to be very slightly harder, and certainly not easier.

2 Rangers with their pets could duo some dungeon content because two pets could tank, and any tanking of any content was perceived as inherently broken, and so “fixes” were applied… Today there are a wide range of videos showing most classes soloing dungeon content… This issue of Rangers duo-ing content was even cited recently as an issue for Rangers, as apparently people soloing content is being ignored by ANet.

The issue was while nobody had any experience with the game, Rangers had an advantage in PvE because of pets.

On top of this, in the early betas nobody did any melee because range for far safer and offered no disadvantage. Then all range damage was nerfed across the board and this impacted Rangers in a way that was never recovered from.

In PvP, you have a similar situation of nobody having any experience with their class… Some classes that went on to be strong in PvP were initially screamed as being completely broke. Mesmers and Elementalists were perfect examples. Nobody knew what you were meant to do with a Mesmer in either PvE or PvP. The forums were filled with “what’s the point of illusions they can’t tank for kitten”. Elementalist were commonly believe to be broken in all ways as the community had no notion of synergy of play and builds.

Rangers at a first glance are all about range if you think no deeper. The first Rangers had an idea of what they were meant to be doing, and as it happens when you have a whole bunch of people no sure what they’re doing in PvP, the guys with the bows and pets mop the floor with everybody else… This was balanced so that Rangers didn’t own everything they saw… Then the community figured out how to play, and the initial advantage range focused classes had was removed.

Rangers are a broken class because the basis of their design decisions are no longer valid in the current game. With every other class I play balance is an issue of numbers. With Rangers, the class does not integrate well into the game.

…Really?

Personally I’m breaking my warrior out of the PvE-only closet I had him in.

Warriors now have condition removal.
Longbow got buffed.
Sword got buffed, giving us a middle ground between a full damage weapon (axe) and a full mobility weapon (GS).
Dolyak signet got super buffed.
Heals got a small, but quite noticeable, cooldown reduction.

Honestly, while it isn’t “perfect”, this has been, by far, the best update in months, and we’re, at least, way better off than we’ve ever been in the PvP world.

In PvE we’re basically the same. Slight nerf. Barely noticeable.

My experience is the same. I have a Warrior, Guardian, Thief, Ranger and Mesmer at 80 which I play largely PvE, with some occasional WvW.

Cleansing Ire had me deciding to give the Warrior another whirl for a bit… I think those Warriors claiming the sky is falling in simply don’t have a term of reference. Each of the class forums gets threads like this.

"Light Trapper Achievement" and a Ranger

Okay, I might be a n00b. It may well be that I suck too badly to excel at a Ranger. Luckily I’ve also levelled a Warrior, Mesmer, Thief and Guardian to 80 and it would seem that I don’t suck so terribly bad so as not to be able to feel comfortable with those classes.

LOTS of Rangers ask repeatedly for permanent pet stow and end up playing a different class even when Ranger is their preferred choice simply over this mechanic. The amount of requests I have seen for this feature alone indicates to me it’s an issue of flawed design and not “nooby” Rangers. The Ranger playerbase is no more or less skilled than that of any other profession.

Moreover Ranger pets are not well regarded by the broader playing community in dungeons, regardless of how skilled the Ranger is.

Sooner or later ANet will get over themselves and implement perma-stow with Ranger buff if pet stowed. It would just be nicer if they got around to it sooner rather than a couple of years down the line. It’s a broken mechanic that worked well in concept by not in live game.

Hardest Class to Play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Carnagh.1687

As others have noted it’s a very personal view. I’ve levelled Ranger, Warrior, Thief, Guardian, and Mesmer to 80 and I’m in the process of levelling the others.

Ranger is trivial to level, straightforward with a couple of different options for play, but has some stigma associated with it for Dungeons.

Warrior was trivial to level, but I personally find a bit cookie-cutter despite seeming to have a lot of options… I can see Warrior would reward a twitch player, but I’m not really that… I think the reasons I don’t feel comfortable with the Warrior are down to me.

Thief I had the hardest time levelling until I ploughed into survivability and in particular went for all the initiative points I could generate, and paid attention to blinding… then it became trivial, and also started to feel cookie cutter, as I started to get compulsive about blinding things… which also leads to “spam the best ability over and over”. Built right the Thief is really very survivable. Without attention to this I found it just melted.

Guardian felt very well rounded throughout but over quite a bit of play I ended up with a build that I felt to be (for me) “done”, and so it felt a bit cookie cutter.

Mesmer I found a bit tricky to get used to, but once I did get used to it actually found it to be really versatile.

As a last notes, classes with high hitpoint pools tend in my opinion to offer more flexibility over builds and gear than those with small hp pools.

The classes I found most survivable were Mesmer, Guardian, Thief, Ranger, Warrior, in that order.

I’m a PvP lightweight, I largely play PvE and put off WvW until recently… I will be running my thief P/T/V until I’m not a n00b, and indefinitely if need-be as I’m frankly not sure my reaction times are up to a glass-cannon build. It’s the only way I can survive an onslaught from a wide variety of class/build combos until I get better at PvP.

On the upside I’m getting a very good kill to death ratio as a n00b because I surprise a lot of players when I don’t buckle. Traiting into all the init I can get ahold of, and plenty of blind… When you look to mitigate your weak areas rather than blame your issues on others, you play better.

As I gain experience I’ll gradually leave off the bunker elements and go for more dps…. but only when I’m able to support that as a player.

It’s funny how only people playing thief defend their overpowered and soon to be nerfed build. Because smashing 1 button plus a dodge roll to spam endless caltrops is really skillful, wake up seriously, its not about actually killing people but keeping a base because 1 thief can just cover a whole base with caltrops and hide where there’s no way to cleanse the bleed effect since you need to stand in the base to actually capture it.

If you think that Caltrops are seriously killing people you’re very misguided.

Overall I build bleeds twice as fast on my Warrior with swords than on my Thief with daggers.

Now, your post is starting to get deliberately provocative which I believe is against the rules of conduct on the forum.

I think the sustained dps has to be emphasised… Again, I avoid P/P but if you’re not going to be able to sustain dps otherwise P/P is the best option. People rarely pay adequate attention to the amount of time they’re not actually spending dealing damage and the hit that causes their sustained dps.

Having said that, it is perhaps best to regard P/P as what is used while learning a situation and should be transitioned to a loadout with better sustained dps when possible.

Really though, if somebody is really enjoying P/P and is providing unbroken dps and rezzing it is a solid and reliable contribution even if not optimal… Should we try and curb their fun? Do we want to turn this into a game where people are told what their optimal build should be the moment they enter a group? Some games have become that.

You can spec into pistols, you can spec into init. regen, you an spec into Signet CD reduction (that gives you +2 init. on pop)…etc. etc.

I can chain Unload [almost] all day long, regularly hitting 7k+ in ~2-3s.

I’m specced into init regen and can attest its a valid a path to dps and utility… I don’t tend to use P/P myself, but that’s only out of preference. If going that way its worth adding “Hastened Replenishment” which adds +4 to healing skill meaning you have a 12s heal with +6 init. With another 2 signets and “Roll for Initiative” along with “Opportunist” there’s some serious init regen.

I prefer S/P and D/P for most situations as it suites the gameplay I want… There’s threads describing how awful that is. If I’m feeling uncertain about a situation I go D/D and P/P and focus on staying up and rezzing others… That’s also awful… There’s threads describing pretty much any loadout as awful except the SB.

It’s a game. People are meant to have fun; Let them.

The block is nifty, but the weapon still lacks any reason to be used over things like… warrior greatsword.

In much the same way that a Warrior Greatsword lacks a pet.

Ranger GS is always going to look lacklustre compared directly to a Warrior GS. This isn’t a defect, an oversight or something that’s ever going to be changed. It’s factoring in that a portion of a Ranger’s dps comes from its pet.

Now I don’t like the pet being factored into dps so that my attacks are for the most part slightly weaker than any other class… So, I play a Thief.

You’re either happy relying upon a pet or you’re not. If you insist on direct comparisons with other classes weapons you’re going to be consistently disappointed. I mean it in the kindest possible way when I say, if this fundamental aspect of the Ranger causes you problems, you need to change class.

If you hold down either the “W” or “S” key while our pets, the “great equalizers” are attacking you, then you’ve just encountered the great secret to countering that “massive amount” of Ranger DPS we’ve stupidly forgotten to account for.

Consider this your first lesson in fundamentals.

Well for a start you’re quoting things that haven’t actually been said. So, way to construct a straw-man argument.

You’ll also find that I don’t like relying on a Ranger pet for dps, so I play a Thief. I’m not advocating the current Ranger reliance on a pet, I’m saying I don’t think it’s going to change so I moved away from my Ranger, and it will be factored into Ranger dps whether you like it or not.

Now, if you think they are going to change the Ranger pet mechanic some time soon you should stick with the Ranger.

If you think they’re not going to change the current relationship of Rangers, their pet and balance, you should change class.

If you don’t think they’ll change the situation and you don’t like it but you’re going to stick with the Ranger anyway and complain about it… then you’re just looking for opportunities to whine.

I cant help but feel, if it was just a quick easy fix, that the problem wouldnt exist and wouldnt be as wide spread throughout mmo’s as it is.
I think the botters are a little more savy than you give them credit for.

As I say, I work in the area, and the classification problems I solve are a lot trickier. Really they are… As I say, I’m not special, there are many programmers working with the same sort of problems on a daily basis. There are some really really simple and obvious data points here.

I can classify behaviour as that of a botter, in real-time.

I am not a special programmer, I merely have over a decades experience in an adjacent field.

There are many many other programmers as capable of solving this problem as I.

Hi, a lot of people have an opinion about why ANet hasn’t stopped botting yet. Most of the opinions are quite reasonable. I work in the area of automatic classification and inference. So, I find it puzzling as to why botting remains when to me there appears to be enough data to stop this almost entirely.

There are data points with a botter that are wholly different than those of a regular player, and from a classification point of view allow for almost certain classification. Lots of data point. Together these different points give I feel 100% certain classification.

I feel reluctant to communicate in too much detail (if an ANet staffer gives the nod I’m happy to broaden the discussion)… I would have thought ANet had the development experience in house already, if they don’t I strongly suggest they go find themselves a dev with a suitable background. I’m not special, there are an awful lot of programmers to whom this problem would not be difficult. If botting is looking like a hard problem to ANet it is because they haven’t gotten the right experience in-house. Much harder classification problems are dealt with in real time.

In short, with the right programmers botting in the obnoxious form we’re currently seeing can be removed completely, and easily.

Loved the new CM Story mode

I did CM both story mode and explorer last night… I wont be doing the story mode again until they change it. The story mode of CM was one of the most unfun experiences I’ve had in the game. I personally found the explorer mode easier.

It was a guild group, and we’ll certainly be helping guild members through their SMs as they need, but it wont be on as casual or ad hoc a basis.

The changes they made to SM were silly. By defination SM have to be able to induct players on a steep learning curve. The recent changes to SM do not take this into consideration at all. These players will also be in many cases dependent on people who have already done SM going with them to pad groups. The recent changes do not take this into consideration.

I don’t need to get much out of SM at all… I do need it to not be a ball-breaking nightmare while managing guildmates who haven’t done the content before and are completely freaked out.

GW2 is the first MMO that one of the CM group last night had played. The fact that they decided after the experience that they would not be setting foot in a dungeon again until they hit 80, and then only if they got bored is indicative of this change.

Story Mode needs to be able to induct new players. If it can’t and instead turns them away, it has failed in its most fundamental purpose and for this reason these recent changes need tuned, and tune quite quickly before an unhelpful impression spreads amongst the portion of the playerbase less experienced with MMOs and their cycles of adjustment… The counter of the number of playres that are (inaccurately) concluding that dungeons in GW2 suck is climbing with each day that now passes.
