This solution finally worked for me:
It’s finally updating. Let’s hope it stays that way.

I had the same problem yesterday and today. I can get to other sites so I’m guessing this is specifically an issue closer to the the game server end.

And the answer seems to be…..it’s a timed event. After about 5 hours in the zone the event finally popped.
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
After the Seraph have retaken New Loamhurst, at what point do the “defend” events start? I’ve been hanging around this burg for 2 hours this afternoon and aside from the place catching on fire occasionally, no events except the fetch ones.

Is it just me or was a lot of NPC dialogue updated/changed recently? For the last week or more I’ve been hearing little snippets of dialogue in various regions in Pact Tyria that I hadn’t heard before. Am I just hearing different bits from what I’ve heard for the past 3 years or was there an update?

Status report: I tried using the turret from the side and from on top. No credit still and/or I got kicked out every time I fired. I think I’m going to ignore this achievement for awhile.
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
Ooh, from the side? Hm. I have no idea why that would make a difference but I will try that. Thank you for the idea!
I don’t know what made the jump pads count, I think it counted the first time I tried it during the event. I would definitely use both 1 and 2 skills, perhaps while targeting someone?
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
I’ve tried a couple of times to use the turrets at the Shatter to get the achievement for using all the siege types. I had the Shatterer targeted and used both the 1 and 2 skills but I didn’t get credit. I was able to get credit for using the mortar and the aerial grenades, but the turrets aren’t registering for some reason. The turret definitely fires, and I’ve tried targeting both the Shatterer and a random mob when firing.
Do I need to get a certain number of hits with the turret? Or am I doing something wrong?

I agree. Chest piece is the most expensive, especially if you’re talking light armor.

Our guild starts the race even if another guild is currently running it and it seems to give everyone in our guild credit, even if we run it concurrently with the other guild. We accept credit and (almost?) everyone gets their jiggly chest. Sometimes it’s buggy but there are a lot of factors to check. The few times I’ve had problems I ran the course again and got the reward.

I did just that, starting from scratch with my asura Ele after my human Ranger and norn Guardian were both stuck. My ele managed to get the rag from Rikka. The extra dialog was in the first dialog box; if you only have one choice, then you’re not getting the cleaning rag.
Interestingly, my human ranger who was the first to try this went to talk to the NPC in Lion’s Arch that starts everything off as well and still had trouble. I’ve no idea what my ele did differently but at least she succeeded.
Thanks to everyone for your help!

You have the dirty cog on you right? It’s not in an invisible bag (throwing out possibilities here). You have the angry present out right?
Yes to both. I also logged out and back in, in the same place and elsewhere, left and came back, got new dialog boxes and fix everything else I could think of.

I read your thread. I tried on a human and a norn and got the same problem. Anyone else have this happen?
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
I have the Angry Wintersday Present in my miniature collection and my character is using it. I have the Extremely Dirty Cog in my inventory. I have found Rikka in Rata Sum (she is, by the way, Not A Siamoth). She tells me that she needs a shiny to send to the king in Skrittsburgh. But she won’t offer me a cleaning rag for love nor money (nor give me the opportunity to even ask).
How did you get her to give you the rag? Or am I misunderstanding the hints, the wiki and Dulfy? Do I need to find the rag elsewhere?

To me it could work as a name for a male or female. Sure, you could name a female character that.

For me, I think the confusion comes from the fact that when I chose (checked) the option I wanted it was then greyed out. I would expect the other option that is unchecked to be greyed out and thus not active. I couldn’t tell if this was just me not understanding what I was meant to do to choose to play Stronghold or if I’m too low PvP level (under 20) and thus didn’t have the choice mechanism available.
I obviously don’t play PvP very much so I assume my ignorance was the problem. It may be crystal-clear to people who are more familiar with PvP. If you wanted to make this more noob-friendly a tooltip might help, even something as probably-obvious-to-everyone-else as “Check the game mode you would like to play. It will turn grey to disable changing the option” or something to confirm that I’m asking for the mode I think I am.
And thanks for the reply.
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
Hm. I see what you mean, but I feel like I tried that and it didn’t work. Ah well, I’ll try it again if/when Stronghold is available again. Thanks for clarifying.
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
I don’t play PvP much but I wanted to play Stronghold. I tried checking the Stronghold box, queued up, got a Conquest match. Ok, I’ll play it, not fair to back out when I’ve accepted. Get through that and try again, this time checking Conquest box and queue again. Yep, got Conquest match again. Play through it again since I accepted. Back in the HotM, noticed that when only one option is checked it’s also greyed out, which to me means it’s not active. Hm. When both are checked both are bright and no grey. So I tried queuing with both checked. Out of maybe 3 more times I got Stronghold (which is what I wanted to begin with) once and played Conquest the rest of the time.
Is this working as intended?

From today’s patch notes:
“Item tooltips for soulbound items will now display the name of the character they are bound to if it isn’t the current character.”
As a player with (possibly) too many characters to keep track of, thank you. This will make my life easier and I for one appreciate it.

Just an added note, I was in this DC and lost the daily BUT I now have the Shattered completion, where I did not before. Entirely possible I broke 4 more people out of crystals, but why did that achievement remain when the daily didn’t?
Weird.
According to them, once you get an achievement you are stuck with it. They don’t take away achievements cause it breaks something.
Thank you, I hadn’t heard that.

I already have a lot of characters and the majority of them are at 80, with multiple 80s of most professions. My current plan is to make a revenant soon after launch and use tomes/scrolls to level that character to 80 immediately. I may also buy another character slot for an additional revenant and level that one up “normally”.
Why? Because that way I have one character with access to all of the traits and skills (as soon as I complete an additional 65 or so hero challenges apparently, which probably won’t actually take all that long) and I’ll still have one to “enjoy the normal leveling process with” even though I’ve already done it a number of times before. For some bizarre reason that seems to be how I learn the existing professions best. Why would a revenant be any different from, say, a guardian (I have 5) or an ele (I have 4) in that regard?
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
I have lots of alts, about half at 80. I normally cycle through them as whim and mood dictate but I use my ranger for personal/Living story, my ele for guild missions and dungeons and my mesmer for guild missions and Silverwastes. I have alts whose function in life is to craft ascended gear and alts who work at the Divinity’s Reach bank, keeping an eye on my stuff and my personal guild bank. I have no interest in deleting any of them, even the ones “in reserve” who haven’t quite found their niche yet.
In the last year I’ve mostly played ele, ranger and guardian. I left my level 80 mesmer completely stranded at the top of a jumping puzzle until after a year I got a mood to play her again and discovered that I really did enjoy her skills. I’ve been giving my guardians a rest since October, but I might decide I want to take them into the new areas when the expansion comes out, specifically to compare to the Revenant.
I tend to focus on one at a time but I like having the rest available for when things change. If you want to focus completely on only one, that’s what you should do. It’s not my cup of tea, but it might be yours.

Second session of the test had a little lag on occasion for me but nothing major. Revenent hammer 3 skill turns out to be the one that refocuses the camera seemingly randomly which is disconcerting. Going mace/axe for the wyvern fight was an interesting experience. I didn’t completely die, but the NPCs rezzing people was appreciated.
I took the opportunity to quickly make an ele and engie to check out the wyvern fights on them, and can confirm that the hang gliding is indeed account bound which is very nice. Ele held her own nicely against enemies including the wyvern, as did engie. I’m looking forward to getting in there again in the future to try out more of the zone.

I noticed my camera was moving oddly. It was changing slightly without my moving it and resetting when I used the revenant skills.
That gliding though…wow. That’s going to be way fun when the expansion launches.

I like soldier’s armor and zerk trinkets on my engie in SW. I think her utilities are flamethrower/bombs/grenades/crate. Standard 6/6/0/0/2 traits. She does ok. Maybe switch out elixir gun for flamethrower if I find myself having a bad day and dying too much.
I like my mesmer there better though, either with celestial or soldier’s armor and zerk trinkets. Lots of dodging and cloning.
Hope you find what works well for you!

Since this item was a teaser of “future items”, I would say there’s a very high chance that those wings are a backpack skin which will replace the default glider skin in Heart of Thorns.
That would actually make sense if the wings were only shown when hang gliding. If that’s the case, then I’m all for them.
Otherwise, meh. I guess I’m not the target audience for them.

I had no idea the focus existed until I got the Essence of Time drop in SW. I looked it up on the wiki, discovered it was a crafting ingredient and that I could make most of the other mats and made the focus. I’m thinking it might be good for my mesmer once specializations are launched — it looks like Time might be involved so it fits the theme.

Personally I like the Phoenix Reborn axe skin, but the effect is slightly more subtle.

Dry Top and Silverwastes both have a lot of levels. I’ll be honest — I prefer Silverwastes. In order to get around to all the events I can use normal skills I’d use in other maps. If I want to get up above the action, that’s where the jumping part comes in. I prefer that, since frankly a little of the Zephyrite skillset goes a long way with me. But in the Silverwastes the jumping puzzle content is entirely optional and actually a lot of fun if you don’t mind heights. Or falling. Or going splat at the bottom of the zone.
It looks from the trailer as if the new zone will have separate levels that are accessible and presumably we’ll be able to learn the skills to get between them. I’ll wait to check it out before deciding whether or not I like it. But that hang glider (skill?) looks pretty fun. I’m hoping I’ll get the hang of it (pun only sorta intended). Who knows, maybe they’ll take pity on players like me and put a few more waypoints in than Silverwastes has. I know that I use them in Dry Top probably more than anywhere else except cities.

Once the Pale Tree heals, then she may be able to protect Sylvari even if they get closer to Mordremoth. Which may be the method they use to eventually allow Sylvari to participate in the final battle against Mordremoth, unless they go for magical protection from another source (the old gods or something, perhaps).
One way to do that might be for only the PC Sylvari to be near Mordremoth on the grounds that the Pale Tree can focus on protecting only one Sylvari at that distance. Be interesting if she has to choose between protecting the PC and Caithe or Traherne, for example. Perhaps that leaves the PC to protect themselves or perhaps allow their friends to provide help. Would make for an interesting story in any case.

This is apparently what made me think that this would be resolved at the end of Season 2:
Oh well, plans change and stuff happens. If the reveal really didn’t fit in with this season and wasn’t included then so be it. I just wanted to make sure that I didn’t miss something that was actually there.

There are a couple of elite guardian skills that are basically this: Tome of Wrath (offensive spells) and Tome of Courage (support spells). They do look impressive when someone is using them. Not sure how they would fit into the other professions.

i have to ask how’d you manage that since I was fairly certain that since you paid skill points for the guides that they would be soul bound (as everything else bought with SP is in the game) and therefore couldn’t buy them for another toon on your account even if they were the same class.
I would have thought so as well, but it turns out the skill books are account bound and transferable via the bank. The catch is that you can only buy books for your profession, so for example my ele can only buy ele books, not guardian or engineering ones.
It only helps if you’re leveling a second character of a profession you already have at 80. Not so much if it’s a different profession.

I leveled a new charr ele to 80 post-NPE using a level 20 scroll, some minimal map exploration, personal story and EoTM. I can live with the NPE by itself but the new trait system is aggravating. I ended up buying trait books for him with my skillpoint stockpiling asura ele but just enough for one build. If he gets any extra traits during gameplay, well and good, but there’s not much build flexibility available for him at the moment.
Right now I’ll level the rest of the alts I have, but I don’t anticipate starting any new ones.

The reason ANet included map completion of WvW maps in overall map completion was for all players to play WvW. Giving players “safe passage” through WvW would remove that requirement, so it won’t happen.

Are you sure it came from the story reward pop-up (in the middle of the screen) and not from a mail?
There was a bug a while ago that stopped the golem bankers from working, so everyone who used them during that time got sent a replacement. The mail would have the Anet logo instead of the letter logo and say something about replacement items from support.
I wondered about that, but there was no mail notification and I didn’t see a pigeon. It’s possible I missed it I suppose. Old reflexes are old.

I’m doing the Level 30 story series on my charr ele and did the step where he went to Lion’s Arch and listened to Destiny’s Edge argue and then got a BL Key. All well and good. Then he goes to meet his order contact and after being told to meet them in another zone he leaves the story instance and suddenly there’s a new golem banker in his inventory. I didn’t see any story reward window pop up and I didn’t have to click on anything but after the cut scene I noticed the golem banker on the right of the screen where loot shows as it’s deposited in your bag.
The golem banker doesn’t say it’s a limited time like the one new characters are issued after buying the digital deluxe version of the game. That one’s still in my mailbox and I checked — it says the time limit is 2 weeks and 1 day. The one I got tonight doesn’t show a time limit although it says it’s reusable.
Is this a new story reward of some kind? Is it just another of the normal golem bankers that bust after two weeks? I would assume so but I haven’t gotten one before just out of the blue like that.

… I THINK the books are account bound (so you can get a character with spare SP to buy it for another character), but don’t quote me on that…..I’m sure the trait book indicates if it is account or soul bound in it’s description.
FYI, if you want to buy the trait books with another character you can as long as that character is the same profession.
For example, my asura ele with all the skill points can buy trait books for my charr ele. My charr guardian can’t buy any trait books for my charr ele because the ele trainer won’t talk to him and the guardian books won’t do him any good.

One thing this episode confirmed for me. Even though I have a thief at 80, I have no desire to play this profession. My thief is doomed to remain in Divinity’s Reach at the Leathercrafting station forevermore.
I understand Caithe’s skills are unique, but even so. I don’t like the way the profession handles and even with her OPness I was just button-mashing my way through it to get through. I’d prefer playing my ranger for real, thanks.

I am seriously not good at jumping puzzles and I hate heights. Having said that, this is a really fun puzzle. I enjoyed it because I felt like I could proceed at my own pace (I love the 24-hour timer on the buff) and even though the first time through took me two hours even with cheating and using the video for the skritt holes in between checkpoints 8 and 9 I had a really fun time. I love the look of the cavern and the fact that it spans such a large part of the zone. I appreciate the little skritt that come res you when you fall to your death-that’s a nice touch, especially for those of us who die a lot.
10/10, would run again, some time when I have a lot of time to spend.
Main? What “main”? I play all of them sooner or later.
I am a vet player currrently leveling a new ele because I wanted a different race. I have learned to live with the NPE. It’s the current trait system that I find limiting. Now that my new character has an elite skill and utilities I guess all further skill points will be spent to get traits he might use later. I have a fully-skilled-and-traited level 80 ele who can help with buying the more expensive trait books, but she really shouldn’t have to just so that my new character can eventually have half of the flexibility she has now.
I would prefer that the “original” set of traits be reset to the way traits were to begin with — available at a certain level for a nominal gold fee. If “new” GM traits and any others that are added later need to be acquired differently then so be it, but there should be a minimal pool of available traits to start with for any build diversity to be possible.
Leveling characters is really a lot less fun now than it used to be because of how traits are handled.
