Endgame question: did GW2 find the answers?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

If you’re defining endgame as a radically different style of gameplay once X point is reached, then GW2 either has all endgame (in that everything opens to you once you exit the newbie instance), or no endgame (in that level 80 doesn’t unlock a new style of gameplay).

If the question is then, should Guild Wars 2 have a point where the gameplay becomes radically different than what it was before that point, I say no, it shouldn’t.

If the question is simply should there be more Things, the answer is obviously yes there should be more Things, and this thread could’ve just stated that instead of this entire thing about philosophy and endgame.

I really want to play this game again but it needs an expansion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

So I’m really curious, and I’m only partially trying to rile the hornet’s nest here…

What specific content does everyone feel ArenaNet should include in an expansion?

Remember that a wide majority of those who participate on this forum do not want any level increase or gear “treadmill” progression, so you should probably consider these concepts off the table. And raids are currently being discussed in a CDI, so you should probably consider this is something they’d already add.

So what else?

Yeah, this is where the feedback is poor. People say “expansion” so Anet keeps expanding the game.

What people really mean when they say “expansion” is “new classes, skills, weapon types, and professions”, which we’re not really getting to any satisfying degree.

And I mean yeah, people want the traditional “new continent” that comes with expansions, but it’s mostly new ways to play the game that they want, rather than more game to play.

Not excited about the game right now.

Here’s things I would be excited for:

  • New weapon types/skills
  • New skills
  • New traits
  • New professions

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game and the devs have shown that they can add more game to play; I guess I’d just like to see different ways to play the game at this point.

I know I’m not nearly the only one who feels this way, but a lot of other people make these excruciatingly long posts. So here’s one that’s as to the point as possible.

These are good but if the devs read every wall of text thrown at them they’d be reading for the rest of their lives. You can shorten this to a bullet list (or just put the list at the top of the post); I highly recommend you do so.

Other than the guild halls, those things seem perfectly reasonable to ask of them and have them implement it.

add 30 new skills per class in xpac

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

One new skill per skill type (e.g. for warriors: one shout, one banner, one stance, etc), one new elite, and one new weapon (with boosting trait) would be a reasonable expectation per profession in an expansion.

Alternately, an entirely new skill type per profession with four skills and a trait to boost them.

I think either of these is a reasonable expectation for an expansion, and I would very much like to see something on this scale delivered via living world.

Mindset. You’re playing for the next thing you can get rather than to just enjoy what’s on the screen right in front of you.

You have to play GW2 like it’s not an MMO at all. Play it like it’s a console game. Pick it up, have fun, when you get bored play something else for a while, then come back when you feel like.

If you need to have that Next Thing, GW2 likely isn’t your game. But that’s okay. Go find the game that scratches that itch, and then log into GW2 every now and then and play it because it’s a fun game to play.

making weapons water only, was mistake

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

Well I think underwater combat in general was a mistake haha. They don’t have the resources to manage two different combat systems (it’s questionable if they have the resources to manage one).

Land spears has to be a thing that happens at some point. It can fill as a midrange melee weapon, a combo finisher generator, or a heavy control projectile and just about all professions can use at least one of those roles. Weapon models are in place already, a lot of them look really awesome. There’s just no reason not to do it.

speargun equivalent for land would be crossbow.

You know, now that you mention it, it probably would be pretty easy to convert many of the speargun models into crossbows.

An odd evolution of Missile Weaponry...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

It seems unlikely to me that entirely new weapons will happen in the foreseeable future (this year or next year). Outside looking in, but at the rate of which they’re balancing existing skills and introducing new ones, the resources required to add entirely new weapons, models, skills, new traits, balancing passes, etc, are pretty much impossible for arenanet right now.

Adding one existing weapon to each profession (for example, hammer for engineer) would be my highest expectation for the next 18 months. Converting one or more of the underwater weapons for land use (spears!) would be beyond my expectations.

New weapon entirely in the next 18 months? I call it impossible (though I’d be thrilled to be proven wrong).

Raid discussion: How it would work.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

I got to participate in a successful Triple Trouble event because I happened to be in the right instance at the right time (I was trying to level up an alt).

Now, instanced WoW-style raiding isn’t my thing. I’ve tried it, and while the encounters are sometimes fun, sometimes it’s just a lot of waiting around and a lot of nonsense and a lot of people who aren’t having fun, but are compelled to participate because of gear upgrades.

However, I like that the bosses in GW2 occur in the main world, because people like me who don’t want to devote an entire day to prepping for it can sometimes be in the right place at the right time and get swept up into something cool.

Please don’t misunderstand. It’s not that I want to leech or that I’m not a team player—I’ve pulled 8-24 hour shifts guarding keeps in WvW—I’m just not interested enough in PvE raiding to devote time to it. There are many people who are not interested enough in WvW points-per-tick to spend hours guarding keeps, but they still want to participate in fights. I understand this and I’m okay with it, and I ask for some understanding on the other side of this as well.

I like that there’s a chance a major boss fight can fall into my lap. I will participate in it if that happens. I do not want private instances for raid encounters for these reasons. It takes some of the life out of the world, and considering that “living world” is kind of a big deal here…

Please Boost Dragonite Ore Drops

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

Dragonite’s fine if you play WvW on a daily basis, imo. I don’t have to go ridiculously out of my way to find the stuff, and by the time I’ve got enough of the timegated mats to make a new weapon, I’m usually pretty close on the dragonite.

I dunno if they changed world boss distribution lately, but the ones where you got like 15 of the stuff per day seemed fine. Temples were always reliable for a good amount, Iunno how those are faring since the schedule changes/megaserver respectively.

So I dunno how I’d feel about adjusting upwards those numbers, but it’d be neat to see an additional source of dragonite in small amounts here and there.

What if completing dailies also lets you choose a box containing either empyreal shards or dragonite ore when you click the chest? Not a great amount. Say 8-16, just as a bit of a boost on days when dragonite is hard to get due to circumstances out of your control (temples defended, keeps not changing hands in WvW)?

That time again: FoV slider

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

Game really needs this. It drives me nuts that I have to go out of my way to see the gorgeous environments in this game because they’re always outside of the normal playing field.

I will say that it’s likely that an increased FOV will provide some advantage to making tricky arrow cart shots around walls in WvW. Not so much a PvP advantage in terms of vision around you (the default camera zoomed out, due to its placement, already gives you this), but trying to twist your camera view in a way that lets you see over or around a wall to land an arrow cart shot, probably.

On the other hand, I play in low resolution and I can’t make some arrow cart shots others can because of that—mostly, I believe, because of relatively larger UI elements obstructing the targeting cursor.

So, the advantage seems to be there either way. I’m all for an FOV slider, just using this post to talk about potential concerns and why they don’t really matter that much.

Edit to add one more thought: In Aion, we could access the console and change the FOV that way, and the biggest advantage that provided was in aerial combat. So maybe FOV does provide an advantage in GW2’s similar underwater combat, but there’s virtually no underwater PvP anymore.

Corian.4068

The short answer is yes, you’re in the wrong game.

If you’re looking WoW style scripted/instanced raiding, GW2 isn’t the place to find it. We have what, three fights in that style? Might I suggest Rift, or just straight up WoW lol.

In terms of gameplay that GW2 does have in abundance, just about all of it can be played during the leveling process. Depending on how you look at that, the entire game is endgame content, or there is zero endgame content that is different from the leveling experience.

I guess if you’re looking for endgame gameplay, stick with Guild Wars 2, and if you’re looking for endgame weapon/armor upgrades, try a game more focused on raiding progression like the ones I mentioned.

One handed hammer and Two handed axes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

a mace is a blunt bleeding weapon, a hammer is a mass smashing weapon, a big difference in physical force.
also, a hammer has more weight and mass then a mace, depending on the size of course.
better yet, when you drop a mace from a building it leaves a few cracks, a hammer shows a more crater-like impact.

anyway, i was more thinking of a KD kind of skill with some stun attacks for the one handed hammer, they “could” even add a skill that allows you to quickly smash the ground to stun or KB enemies around you.

Right, but warrior mace already has a stun, a knockdown, and a daze representing the weight and impact of the weapon. What’s a 1H hammer going to do differently for a warrior?

I mean, if you’d just like to see it as a skin, sure, I’m on board with that, but it’d still function like a mace for everything that uses maces.

I’d find a bigger difference in a rapier and a cutlass than a hammer and a mace, and both the rapier and the cutlass in this game are swords that function identically.

Spears already have in-game models and can fit midrange melee or heavy projectile roles for professions that don’t have them.

Banner bundle mechanics

in Warrior

Posted by: Corian.4068

Corian.4068

As hard as banners are to use effectively, there is a lot of utility to their skills if you really stay on it. The 2 skill does different things for each banner, but it’s generally something that’s worth pressing if you’re holding the thing anyway. 3, AoE swiftness, not much else to say about that. Great for walking yaks in WvW because if you have two people walking it they can alternate holding the banner for pretty much permaswiftness on the yak.

The 4 skill is a little dash, benefits to that are rather obvious, and the 5 skill is that all-important blast finisher.

Those are all useful things, provided you can manage to keep track of your banner, and have the positioning awareness to keep it where you can reach it.

I’ll grant you though, most people can’t.

And all of this they’ve known since release and it’s never changed. It doesn’t seem very likely that it will short of a major overhaul.

Maybe if the banner could be picked up and dropped, but also swapped in and out as the active weapon via F2 or something, but then stuff like that would have to be applied to everyone that has bundles, and at least one of them is already occupying F1-F4. New keybind for that? Iunno. Like I said, nothing short of a major overhaul will change this, and I doubt we’re seeing an overhaul any time this year or next.

PPT is a joke. WvW is about fights.

in WvW

Posted by: Corian.4068

Objectives are important. They should remain important. Without objectives it’s just a deathmatch.

They introduced a deathmatch map in sPvP. Spoiler alert: It isn't very fun.

I get that PPT can be frustrating because individual players have very little control over things like coverage, but having the objectives there is better than not having them there, and fighting already does figure in with the bloodlust point per stomp.

A possible middle ground might be to make the bloodlust more important. At two or three points per stomp per bloodlust it’s still not going to attract zergs but it should become more active than achievement farmers and the occasional solo roamer.

The points would most apply to smaller scale fights too, as zergs and keep defenses would tend to see downed players killed by siege or zerg damage rather than stomps. Basically the kind of fights the OP wants.

There’s no way this would happen, but I’d love to see this as a bit of an experiment: keep the models as they are, but -5% outbound damage for asura, and +5% outbound damage for norn and charr.

I say this because for as long as I can remember there’s a set of PvPers that try to make their avatars as small as possible. Either by picking the smallest race or, like in Aion, just making their characters really really tiny. I would love to see if a slight penalty to the small race would be enough to make them change their minds on that, or if the benefits of being so tiny would outweigh such a thing.

I bet they’d still pick asuras. The ones who move to norn and charr would be human/sylvari players.

I started a new character to see how that plays differently from my other characters. I want to be able to dive into the differences right away, but because of the new trait point allocation I can’t. Remember, nearly half of the trait points aren’t given out until you’re level 70+.

This makes me feel like I’m playing an incomplete game. The game isn’t incomplete, of course, but when the primary reason (for me) for creating a new character is being able to fiddle with a different set of traits to see what happens, it can be frustrating to have to wait so long to be able to do so.

Recommend starting trait point distribution at level 20, with all trait points given to a character by level 60. Revert enemy stat changes introduced in April.

What the Cantha District in DR looked like

People are starting to take this Cantha thing way too seriously and personally; remember this is not Earth , this is a fantasy world, this is a game.

That’s how most of us in the west feel. However, Arenanet is owned by a Korean company and having a big Chinese launch. Apparently they do not like to be mixed in with each other (or the Japanese), and to have Cantha be exclusively one of them at the expense of the other two would be just as bad.

Personally? I think they should just make Cantha all Kurzick (gothic) architecture, but lore already established that the Kurzicks and Luxons have been conquered.

Then again, Warcraft lore didn’t have the Draenei as space demons until one day they were and lol retcon all the things. Hell, Metzen himself didn’t even realize how badly he’d contradicted his own lore until the fans called him on it, so it goes to show how important maintaining continuity is in these processes.
