What am I to do with unuseable birthday dyes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dreamslayer.7659

Gaile, I have a huge stack of these because I’ve maintained 100% dye unlock for several years.

I get that letting people select a specific dye and then selling it would distort the market, but how about an option for a random, non account bound dye from the list or even from the palette (which would include the cheap dyes) so it works like the gem store dye packs.

I wouldn’t mind forging them but I think you guys should make the special dyes become exotic tier which would basically let us recycle 4 “fancy” account bound dyes for a guaranteed “fancy” dye.

One of the worst things about this situation is what happened with the ascended rings and undesirable ascended gear drops before ascended salvage and ascended stat changes.

People figured that stuff would never have any use so they deleted their rings or sold them to vendors. Then later on, those of us who saved them were rewarded.

I don’t really want to salvage or forge my birthday dyes because I think you need a better solution.

By the way, it’s the same with the currently useless luck essences. More and more people have maxed out their Magic Find, but luck continues to drop and there is virtually no sink or use for it. So it clogs up our banks while we wait – knowing that the week after we give up and delete it, you’ll come out with some new recipes or a vendor or a luck eater, etc.

I don’t care that much what you guys do in these cases, but I’d like you to do something so people can disposition their currently useless goods with confidence.

Guild Wars 2 on PS4

Dreamslayer.7659

The CPU in the PS4 has extremely weak single thread performance.

GW2 would run very poorly on a console without a major engine overhaul.

From what I’ve seen, console gamers and MMO gamers seem to want very different things from their games – I’m sure there is some overlap but I doubt there is enough.

72 Million may seem like a lot, but there are Billions of PCs. Not all of them run Windows, not all of them are gaming capable but the potential customer base is still at least an order of magnitude larger than the PS4 customer base.

If you want to run an MMO on a console, you need to design it from the ground up with that in mind. That means content updates, performance, DLC, cross platform capabilities, control constraints – everything. Trying to shoehorn a mature PC game into the latest console would be an expensive disaster and a likely breach of fiduciary duty.

One thing that could maybe help would be some sort of (optional?) delay on any email or password change to an account and then send an SMS and email to the existing account email and phone number to alert them.

Time is really the enemy when all this is going down – inserting a window of time (24-48 hours) before they are able to take over would be minimally inconvenient for the account holder but possibly catastrophic to an attack – unless they had full command over the account holders email and cell phone (in which case the account holder probably has much bigger problems anyway).

Rasern, I would read that but it noticed I block ads and won’t show me the article unless I whitelist it to show me ads or I subscribe, neither of which I wish to do for the sake of reading one story.

The part I could see said that the hacker went into the guy’s google account and daisy chained from there to his Twitter so as to send out nasty comments in his name. Before I could read how social engineering was involved I got the big block of “pay up or you may not read.”

I have seen some people demanding the things you say, but mostly I’ve seen concern about how multiple attempts did not raise any flags. I agree with those concerns. Why wasn’t anything added to her account profile to note the attempts? I recently was my brother’s gmail account restoration backup source while he was overseas, in case his phone got stolen, and until he removed me I got a notice every time he accessed things from a new computer. Heck, when I add a gmail account on one of my devices, I get an email notifying me of the recent activity. Why wasn’t Gaile sent a notice each time the attempt was made, so she could then notify Support from her authorized email that “someone is trying to hack in, it’s not me” and have that added as a flag?

I don’t use a regular ad blocker, but I do use a massive hosts list which does the same thing. I was able to “select all / copypasta” to read it in notepad…

I don’t know how lax you expect it to be but when I lost my account info I gave them a picture of my state id or license to prove residency, who I am. To me it’s not unreasonable to prove who you are with your id…

I don’t think it should be lax at all. I think something like that should be the minimum standard, but it sounds like hackers were able to convince support to hand over details with minimal or even made up personal information.

It’s a shared inventory slot, not a shared gathering tool slot.

There are actually people who bought multiple sets of tools so they don’t have to swap.

Most people would not expect shared trinkets or weapons, why expect that the gathering tools are shared (without swapping to account wide slots first)?

One of the main problems with a socially engineered account take over is that it’s well known that many players do not use their real name or real contact info when they create an account.

I would guess that the reasons range from privacy concerns to people being under age to carelessness, (“it’s only a game!”, etc) to concerns that the system could be hacked and their private data (social security number in the US, address, etc) could be released.

Account Recovery has to remain relatively lax because there are so many people who legitimately own their account, but don’t have very complete or accurate information.

It’s frustrating because I’m willing to include accurate personal information – my real name, telephone number, etc but because there seems to be an assumption that that could all be fake, or somehow all my information could suddenly change – it does not seem like we can establish a permanent ID in the system and then have recovery attempts be based on knowing or proving that info (as opposed to just saying you forgot all your real ID info).

Maybe I’m a bit off in my perception, but I wish there was a way to established a verified ID that includes some static personal information and sets the bar much higher for account recovery.

Last year, you could get regular (not gemstore) dyes from the kit and sell them. The best one you could sell was 10 gold ish. That was a good bonus yo those of us dye collectors who have supported anet through the gem store.

However, that did get patched. Now all you can do is salvage the due for some pigments. It’s pretty crappy.

My bet for this birthday gift is an immortal weapon skin. Nobody has a full set of them the most you could have do far is like 5 & they are gemstore skins with no associated achievement.

I really hope not, I have 2 of those skins in boxes and I really don’t care for them but besides that, I would hope a 4th year item is unique, not just part of a gem store series.

“The simple fact is there is no good reason to not consider that people might have all of something when creating something like the birthday gift, which a lot of people look forward to. And that is all the OP asked for.”

Perhaps some having all of the dyes was taken into account and dismissed as too small of a percentage of the overall population. There’s really no way of knowing for sure. When it all comes down to it, there is no way to please everyone, just as many as possible. Only other option is an in-game mail of “Hey, grats on turning 4 & keep on grinding.” and just be done with it. Everyone gets the same thing and Anet doesn’t have to worry about any of the players having it….right?

“Only other option is an in-game mail of “Hey, grats on turning 4 & keep on grinding.” and just be done with it." – this is one of those poor arguments I’ve been talking about. There are plenty of other options. Quite simple options, using tickets and boxes that give a choice, for example – things prevalent throughout the game which wouldn’t require a significant amount of effort.

The OP handled their disappointment with the 4th year BD present by waiting until this week to ask ANet reconsider their choice in the future. I expressed my opinion about it when it happened, hoped that they would take that into account this year, and then haven’t bought every last dye in a set since.

I don’t have a problem with the OP asking. I don’t have a problem with ANet making the same choice again either.

The fourth BD present was incredibly generous and awesome and I consider myself lucky that I could afford to be in a position where I didn’t need any of the dyes. I don’t think ANet needs to worry about the 10% when figuring out birthday rewards.

Actually, I have posted many times on this subject since the 3rd birthday. If you read my posts, you’ll see that I’ve been consistent about addressing it as a problem with the way they build their reward systems.

Here are just some of my posts on the subject over the last year. I thought the 2nd one was kind of funny but nobody replied to it…

This is like telling your parents what you want for your birthday.

I bet people will be asking Anet to make a poll about what gifts they should get.

No, it’s like saying:

“could you not give out combs this year because some people are bald”

“please consider an alternative to the candy you gave everyone last year, some players are diabetic”

etc.

So the issue with you is the gold value. It’s unfair to you that someone got a lot more value out of the gift than you did.

Geez.

I honestly don’t care about the gold value – I have everything I want and more gold than I can spend.

I care about the nature of the reward systems and I want Anet to structure them so that this and the other issues I outlined in a previous post are reduced and eventually eliminated.

Dreamslayer.7659

Let’s recognize the distinction between a birthday gift that you can’t use because you already have it and one that is new, but perhaps not something you care for.

What if, for the 4th birthday, they pass out Karmic Converters (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Karmic_Converter) to everyone.

Great gift – lots of people have excess Karma and a daily exchange is really handy.

It wouldn’t be exciting for people who collected all the exotic skins and earned the converter the hard way.

“It’s not like they gave everyone the title!” (Exotic Hunter)

“It’s not like they passed out all the exotic skins – you still have all those!”

In one sense, what Anet gave us for year 3 was a shortcut (or a head start) toward dye completion. If you have a lot of characters, they have potentially lowered the bar by a few thousand gold.

My only point in making this thread was to ask Anet to think about their reward systems and consider all players when coming up with special rewards.

I would feel the same way if they gave us any choice of the Series 1,2 or 3 minis (some people have all those) or “any fractal weapon”, etc.

Fourth would be the weekly acquisition of single use bank access and repair kit items from the daily reward (the single use Merchant and TP consumables at least have a use that distinguishes them from the perm versions). Also – an alternative use for excess copper-fed-kits now that we have shared slots would not be a terrible idea (as long as we don’t trade them in for dyes!)

Let’s not go there…

Why not?

We’re all getting them on a regular basis now and not everyone needs them or cares to use them. Having a secondary outlet for these items would be great – like put 4 in the mystic forge and get back a spirit shard or three.

As it is, a lot of people have them piling up but don’t necessarily want to delete them because they may have another use in the future.

I don’t think it would be that hard to make them into a token you could exchange for a Black Lion Ticket.

Anet has a few reward systems in the game that are not designed to be open ended / on-going.

The first one is luck – there is virtually no use for luck once you max your magic find.

The second (and most egregious because it’s a direct purchase) was the account bound, single use items in BL Chests (mail birds and minis mostly) This may have been addressed, at least in part, by the new BL Mini tickets.

Third was the birthday gift dyes, but also the Queen Jennah minis and to some extent, the Mini-Gwynefyrdd

Most of these are narrow case issues and while they are not major problems, I point them out to draw attention to the concept of “acquired often, used once” rewards in hopes they will take a more long term outlook when designing reward systems.

I guess paying your own way is a form of entitlement now?

Here are some alternatives they could have considered:

1. Make the dyes unbound so you can sell or gift them.
2. Update the gift pack with new dyes as they are released.
3. Make an exclusive series of dyes only obtainable from this gift
4. Offer a couple of alternatives – like a minipet or a hat or even something useful like spirit shards.

1 and 2 were not considered because they would impact the price of dyes on the TP and the value of the new dyes in the gem store.

3 would probably be too controversial and besides, how many exclusive colors can you make? Some people have dozens of characters.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dreamslayer.7659

Ecto only has 2 sources: 1. salvaging rares and 2. salvaging exotics.

Some rares are more valuable than others and the most valuable types of rares are manufactured in large quantities.

With so many people returning to the game, the supply of mats used to make those rares has increased so the cost of manufacture has gone down. This has pushed down the prices of other (less desired) rares and in turn, the price of ecto.

Dreamslayer.7659

It’s simple, if someone had bought those dyes just before that gift came out, they were out hundreds, possibly thousands of gold.

If someone else was just about to buy those dyes but then received their gift(s) then that’s a sale that someone didn’t make on the TP and an expensive dye that someone else received.

Those who already owned all the dyes available from the collection had no options other than salvage or forging.

If we had known in advance that “hey, your 3rd year gift is an account bound set of dyes”, we could have bought our dye collections more strategically and saved the last few, most expensive dyes to get with the gift.

You may not see it this way, but many of us feel left out and excluded because we were avid collectors – we feel like we should be given another option or a way to sell the dyes.

The current situation is not going to change, but I would like them to include other options or a gift that every player can use, regardless of progress in a specific area.

We’re just a few weeks away from the 4th Anniversary and I would like to ask that whatever Anet decides to do, please consider everyone.

The 3rd year gift was a very cool dye selection but it was also not able to be used by many of the most avid dye collectors who already had all the dyes available in the selection.

Many of us held out hope that new dye collections would be added and that we could use the gift in the future, but that has not happened.

I realize that it’s a small percentage of the community, but it was disappointing that many of the players who are most interested and focused on dye collecting found themselves excluded.

Please don’t let that happen again.

I have 16 characters so my choice is to put 1 copper fed in a shared slot (and 8 in the bank) and let all my characters have access, or just keep them in the inventory of my 9 main characters and let my 7 alts deal with it.

Neither is really optimal.

Why not let us trade the copper fed kits in for Black Lion Tickets or something?

Maybe this is a first step?

Perma death is not ever going to happen in GW2.

In GW1, we had dungeons with entry fees and an actual fail state – they were thrilling in part because messing up was costly.

There is nothing like that in GW2 – all PVE content can be attempted over and over until you give up and then you can try again later.

With Fissure of Woe and Underworld, you had skin in the game and a loss was costly.

If they won’t implement something like that in GW2, perma death is off the table because it’s 100 times more risk.

Charr homosexuality?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dreamslayer.7659

Dreamslayer.7659

I don’t think it makes sense to project human views onto another species in another universe.

Tyria is actually quite a tiny world and there is basically one Charr culture and a single dissident, counter culture – just like all the others.

Human attitudes toward homosexuality, marriage, monogamy, polygamy, etc are quite different throughout the world and are likely due, in large part, to the different sorts of threats and dangers that each culture faced through the ages.

It’s also over simplistic to imagine that every individual in every culture adheres to cultural norms. Some cultures punish deviants severely – there are still countries in earth that execute homosexuals – some cultures might have only minor to moderate social consequences. (critical clarifying edit: if a homosexual is being punished by society, it’s because they are perceived as a deviant, I’m not using that label myself)

The other thing to consider is that scientifically, we do not know the degree to which human homosexuality is the result of environment/choice or the result of genetics. The current best guess seems to be that it’s some of both.

Whatever the case it is with humans, it’s not reasonable to assume it would be the same with Charr. Maybe there are homosexual Charr, maybe there are not, but it seems very simplistic to just imagine their motivation is on par with modern humans in cat suits.

I’m in the same boat – all dyes unlocked and 5 of those things sitting in the bank.

Don’t hold your breath – they have released two new dye sets since it came out and they didn’t add them. Historically, once they make something like this, they don’t get around to updating it.

There are a number of systems in the game where little to no consideration was given to what might happen when maximalist players maximize.

Luck is the other looming problem – those of us with maximum magic find have found that 1/7th of our daily rewards are useless and worthless.

A luck eater or converter is long overdue.

One Spirit Shard per stack of exotic luck? That’s not going to shake anything up but it would give us a drain for the luck we’re drowning in.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Playing as a healer in PVE, you will find that all you’re really doing is sacrificing DPS to keep new/bad/afk players alive.

It’s not really worth it – it makes you get fewer rewards and it disrupts the learning process / feedback loop that helps people get better at the game.

Everyone goes down once in a while and it’s probably more efficient to let people go down and then rally to 50% health by killing mobs around them than it is trying to keep them healed up.

Ask an Ele – they know how to rally off Meteor Shower and Lava Tomb when they need to.

I think it’s very presumptuous of everyone to constantly say GW2 is “poorly optimized”.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t, but what evidence do we have?

From my observations, I think the network is the real bottleneck – the game has no trouble rendering large numbers of entities, but the network traffic for 70 people to play together is kind of insane.

Maybe a graphics overhaul would make sense in 4-5 more years, but not at this point.

Well one could argue that the out of memory issues that plagued the 32 bit client is poorly optimized to handle 32 bit client memory restrictions. 64 Bit client is just a band aid fix/workaround to the out of memory issue that they haven’t been able to fix for over 3 years.

32 bit systems can only address 4GB of RAM and if you need more than that, you have to use all sorts of tricks. Don’t blame Anet, blame binary.

Improved XP Booster nerfed into oblivion

Dreamslayer.7659

hmm? that improved booster is 100% each kill. 50% xp booster includes ALL xp sources, including events and stuff!

Regardless, it was 100% per kill for 2 hours. You could make an argument that 50% from all sources is an equitable change (I would disagree but I could live with it) but to change a booster from 120 minutes to 20 minutes is unfair.

You should also remember that this booster was made from 5 other boosters and I think those were all changed to 20 minutes each. Fine, make this booster run for 100 minutes.

I think items from the cash shop deserve a bit more attention and consideration before their potency and duration are changed after they were purchased.

I’m sure there is something in the TOS to let them make those changes, but as paying customers, we deserve some basic assurance that when we buy something, that purchase is respected and it’s value upheld or, when something has to be changed, make a point to make an equitable trade.

Asking to get what you paid for is the foundation of commerce.

Improved XP Booster nerfed into oblivion

Dreamslayer.7659

Hi Anet,

The Improved XP Booster was an item that was made from 5 regular (50% x 1hr) boosters to become a single super booster (100% x 2hr)

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Improved_Experience_Booster

I made one of these shortly before HoT launched to help level my Revenant.

When I went to use it, I discovered that it is now worth only 50% XP for 20 minutes.

It does not seem fair to nerf something from the cash shop like that by 90%+ after purchase.

In case people are wondering, I did open a ticket and received a reply:

Thank you for contacting us about your issue. Unfortunately, we as support do not have any control over item changes such as this. The best option is to make a post in our Official Forums: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum . The development team are gathering information on the forums

Members of the Development Team read the forums daily, and while they usually cannot respond to individual suggestions, the fact that team members can review those suggestions in a public forum helps them gauge the level of interest in a particular idea, and also allows other players to discuss and offer feedback of their own.

The team looks forward to reviewing your input.
—-

I understand that the shifts in the game require you to change the way boosters work, but this is pretty egregious and should be rectified. Why not just turn these into a container that spawns some of the new boosters?

I think you should be a bit more careful about the way cash shop items are treated – even if they are just RNG items from BL Chests. I don’t think I’m a particularly picky player and I roll with the changes, but changing items we buy, after we buy them is not fair. At all.

Second best condi build is Ranger. Third is venom share thief (in a group only) and a distant fourth is warrior. Very distant.

Second is Guard (maybe first with minion changes).

Guard does Burst Burning while Ranger does Sustained Burning/Bleeds.

In PvP, Guard typically wins out. In PvE, Ranger typically wins out. It depends on Encounter Length and how much the enemy moves about.

Yeah but now that spirit weapons are actually viable they add a bunch of DPS that guard couldn’t use before. Plus the hammer is probably the best non-elite in the game for destroying break bars (lol jade wind).

I love my full ascended sinister guardian – the burning damage is incredible

I had not considered revising the spirit weapons, but maybe it’s time for another look.

Many players don’t like it when there are items that break immersion by being too outside the idiom or theme of the game.

I would not like it if I were playing something like Battlefield and other players dressed up like a bunny or kittentail waitress or a football player.

It doesn’t take much of that to make it start feeling less like a fantasy game and more like a costume party.

Why are there even mining picks that aren’t Watchwork mining picks?

Because the income from the WW pick is actually fairly trivial compared to the luxury and convenience of a permanent pick.

I use:
Molten tools on my Guardian (because: burning)
R-Tron tools on my thief (Thieves are inherently lazy)
Mad Scientist tools on my Engineer (The logging tool really bothers me)
Gadgeteer tools on my Mesmer

And joy of joys, today they released the minion tools so I was able to match the bone pick I had on my necro!

Honestly, the Tireless Logging Minion is concentrated nightmare fuel.

I also have several WW picks on other alts, but those are my mains.

I get a lot more satisfaction out of the unique themes than a few sprockets.

We’re going to need a truck load of cheese to go with all this wine.

Wow.

You should have realized that a gold nerf was coming. They can’t hand out +2% gold find per month, every month and not have it become an issue.

What I read was that you will still receive value, but the value will come less from gold and more from other things. This is a good change. I’ve been able to make a LOT of gold this year but it’s been hard work.

Gold will buy you most things, but not everything. It won’t buy you spirit shards – you have to play the game if you want more. If we see more desirable items that are acquired through play and not purely from gold, it will be a very good change.

John, the one thing I would like to see addressed are the fact that there are various reward systems in the game that once achieved, you still acquire, but you have no way to use them or convert them:

BL Chest minis that cannot be traded
Luck essence once you hit maximum account magic find
3rd year birthday gifts for people who own all the dyes (were we not supposed to do that?)
Fractal weapons are being addressed, thank goodness.

There are probably a few other things, but I would like to see more thought given to “what happens when players finish/collect/maximize X and continue to get Y as a reward?”

Thanks

This is just Anet trying to give people with full a full dye collection a severe OCD attack for a few weeks before releasing them….

[Suggestions] Gemstore Items

I think I mentioned this before but I’m going to say it again.

Sell a transmutation solution that gives a very short period of time to do unlimited transmutes for people who have a large number of characters.

Selling them individually allows people to save the charges and use them occasionally – like a single use bank access consumable.

Selling a short duration unlimited transmute device would be like selling a banking golem.

It would let people get their looks in order on a few dozen characters but after it expires, people are still going to need single charges to make adjustments.

If you want to put some sort of friction on the usage, make it run on gems or gold…

Armors break differently fast

Some deaths (mostly falling) don’t crack or break your armor.

Otherwise, every piece of armor will crack and then after that, they will break. The stat type has nothing to do with it.

I have all of the picks, plus 3 watchwork picks.

My favorite is the Mine R Tron because it makes me feel powerful to summon a litte bot to do the work for me.

Second favorite is the Mad Scientist Pick which is perfect for my Engineer in Magitech Armor.

Everyone says to get the Watchwork pick and you should probably have one, but I just find that I enjoy the variety and some of the more amusing animations more than I care about a few sprockets here and there.

I want to be rich enough that I’m not putting such utilitarian, penny-pinching concerns ahead of what I find enjoyable.

Can we get some perspective here?

There are two kinds of laws: “Mala in se” and “Mala prohibitum”

There is nothing inherently wrong with selling a dungeon path in the way there is something wrong with murder and robbery.

If it’s wrong, then it’s wrong because the dev team says it’s wrong and by extension, it somehow undermines or conflicts with their vision of how the game should be played.

They have not come out and banned the practice and nobody has made a compelling argument as to why consenting players cannot voluntarily exchange their in-game time and resources.

A lot of people don’t like it because they have a very personal set of rules that assign meaning to various activities. That’s fine too, but it’s healthy when we can recognize that our ideals are personal and not global.

There are people who think we shouldn’t have gun stores or pet stores or sports cars or sugary beverages but we still have all of these because people very different ideas about risk, utility and freedom.

I believe that, in general, it’s best to default in favor of freedom.

Character position in character select

I think there is a lot of opportunity in the character select window.

It would be nice if we could choose a sort – like last played, time played, level, etc.

I would also like to see some sort of grid view and some sort of portrait mode where we could take some screen shots. If you’re really going to go crazy, how about a wall paper or even a screen saver generator (too much? yeah)

Also, why does it only show 5 or 6 characters along the bottom?

I think it’s great.

I paid to go from Fractal 43 to 50 and got the Fractal Trident which I’ve been wanting forever and an ascended light legging in the process.

I just don’t have the time to run fractals anymore and wanted to get back up to 50 before HoT – after being at 59 before Fractalized or whatever it was.

I’m very impressed with the fractal 50 sellers – they are highly efficient and conduct themselves like professionals. If I had the time, I’d probably try to get in on it.

It’d be nice to have raid wings drop ascended chests a lot though.

Exactly. People are forgetting that Ascended gear can drop and now you can change the stats to what you want it to be. If you can do the first parts of the raid in exotic, keep doing that part for a while and you will probably get enough ascended drops to advance.

Also, it might not be very nice, but I think players should be free to set a high bar for those they want to play with. If someone wants to make everyone in their group do a gear check via GW2E, then either do it or don’t play with them.

That is a VERY tiny minority of people and I think they have the right to be picky and exclusive about who they play with, just as everyone else does.
