I think thats understandable but the excuse that rangers should be exceptional at ranged simply because “range” is in the name is similarly aggravating. It should be neither inclusive nor exclusive, its just a name. The rest of what you say about being promoted as exceptional archers is certainly valid imo!

Yeah, I agree because this is GW2 and they put a good emphasis on you being able to use the weapons you want and not be kitten. I just feel like we’re incredibly lackluster as ranged characters (compared to other profs), name/perception of “ranger” notwithstanding.

In games, “ranger” has been misinterpreted so much that it has taken on a new meaning, that of somebody who uses ranged weapons while still hanging onto some of the more traditional ranger qualities. Why is every Anet promo pic of a Ranger using a bow? Why in their official description of a Ranger does it make a point to call them unparalleled archers? Capable of bringing foes down from far away? Why does it officially say “Their loyal pets, which rangers tame and train, distract enemies while the rangers strike safely from a distance”? But of course, like every other GW2 profession, we’re flexible and can proficiently use other weapons. But Anet has made a point of marketing us as bow users and once we get into the game and realize other professions are just as good or better with a bow, the community starts using old definitions that aren’t directly applicable to the gaming meta. Should a thief only be great at stealing and sneaking? No, they’re great at that as well as super high crit damage with daggers BECAUSE of the gaming meta, aka Rogues and that type of character. We are Rangers, unparalleled archers who should be masterful with the bow. Better than anyone else, easily. And if people want to backtrack and use the old Ranger definition, why do we get routinely outclassed in mobility? Surely a class that is known, NAMED, after its ability to RANGE we should be better than sneaky thieves and lumbering warriors? (And I’m not talking about short distance fight mobility, I’m talking about open world RANGING).

Well thanks! To answer your question, not really. I’m a hack, haha. I run the typical Brazil dungeon running build in PvE, with constant tweaks depending on the content. For example I think I used frost trap and S&R for the marionette, all sorts of different utilities for various dungeons and fractals, i.e. mainhand axe on switch for TA. For open world content I often take the SotH and flame trap just to speed things up.

In PvP, I am all over the place and have run all sorts of builds, but for serious time, I run a spirit ranger with Nature’s Voice (sun spirit, stone/storm spirit and guard.) I don’t love the build but it is ridiculously effective.

In WvW I run a berserker melee/longbow roamer based around CC, which is admittedly very difficult to play at first. I can link you to the build if it interests you.

The WvW build would be great. I love longbow, roaming, and CC but am aware of the “noob traps” of the weapon. Would like to get better with it.

Honestly this is a problem. When I used to main thief there was the usual QQ’ing on the forums about how the class was being ruined, they needed buffs, everyone’s favorite builds being destroyed, etc. Of course a lot of that was unfounded, and they just wanted buffs or didn’t want to lose their spot as one of the best classes. But as a newish Ranger, joining a competitive guild, is instant 15 people asking me to main something else. Pretty much asking if it’s a joke, b/c Rangers have no place here. Thankfully I’m in a better guild now, but there’s still the pressure because it’s so hard to be competitive with the other classes. I know it’ll be more rewarding because of the higher skill curve but it’s hard. Maybe it’s just b/c I’m used to the faceroll classes like War.

I like it. Looks like is has pretty good durability. There won’t be much cover for poison being cleansed, but I guess with all the sources you can keep it up when the other guy is about to heal at the very least. Maybe keen edge would work better than malicious training with that in mind. Mighty swap also came to mind since you will be swapping pets on recharge.

Celestial is kind of weird, but I can see why you did it, it really does fit the build. I’m not so hot on runes of the scholar in WvW, especially as a melee fighter, but we’ll have to see what all the new runes do before you can decide.

Ascended celestial seems like a big investment, did you already make some?

I reckon run them all in full zerk, imagine 25 rangers with piercing arrows firing off Rapid Fire into an oncoming zerg. Assuming usual zerg packed in close and flat ground its like 1.3 million damage lol. And from 1500-1200 range. If on average, you need to do 20,000dmg to down someone, that is enough damage to down 65 people right there. Then you have 25 Barrages after that. If they get close, all swap to axe and start bouncing the axes around and 10 Path of Scars into the rest of them. 15 unlucky people also get the birds attacking them from warhorn. If all the rangers ran Fire/Ice sigils on the LBs, with the traps, I don’t think many normal sized zergs would get close.

The traps are really just for area denial and movement debuffs, plus conditions to cover the immobs, that’s why I put in all the bleeds too, to make them put their condi removal skills on CD. I think the damage from the conditions is trivial compared to what you will do with the LB and zerk if all focused fire on the zerg.

Just a quick idea anyway.

I’d rather have rapid fire changed to shooting 10 arrows at once. At close range (withing 600) almost every arrow would reliably hit the enemy with maybe 1 or 2 missing the target. At long range, like 1200, only half of them would hit. The twist would be the skill’s damage. It’s a huge burst with low CD which punishes ANYONE that comes close to the ranger. Compared to Rapid Fire, it would deal just as much at 1k to 1.2k range, but almost double at point blank range. The skill would have around 1s cast time.

I’d also welcome Barrage changed to a chargeable skill that shoots a highly explosive arrow that deals massive damage. The more it’s charged the more tells it has.
A fully charged shot would release a big glowing arrow (the fuse is burning) that arcs like thief SB#2

I’d LOVE this. Hate that there isn’t anything you can do against any more than 1 person if you suddenly get swamped. Cant just sit there with Barrage. Plus it’d be nice for tagging.

I don’t see the problem with the UI,is one of the best UI i saw in a game,it doesn’t take much from your screen,the skill,hp,buffs are well placed.
I think you are too used with the other games where you can move everything.
And i don’t think they will ever allow the players to move things around.The UI is like a trademark ,when you watch a pic or a video if you saw the UI you just know is GW2 without any aditional infos etc.
Anyway,i can understand why would you guys want to move things around…resize,played many mmos in the past, but imo the only thing that should be added would be a resize only,not sidebars etc. To be able to hotkey food etc. would be the only thing i wouldn’t mind having in the game.
But this is just my opinion…

The whole point is freedom. It might just be perfect for you, but for me or whoever it might not be. Instead of trying to make something that’s “one size fits all”, why not give us control? And not even anything that could possibly risk giving advantages, just let us turn things off.

But as somebody who’s lived their whole life in the deep South (and I’d go as far as to say I identify with it), I would not be anywhere near offended with “Paradise” IF it didn’t have the flag. Be an obvious play on the region, but as long as there aren’t literal copies of things like flags or State names, I’d buy it.

To be clear, I’m not saying “scratch” as in 0%, but scratch as in 260k files left to DL, as opposed to the 40k that I had left.

I’ve been downloading the game for 2 days and I’ve got 15GB down. Unfortunately, my computer crashed. When I tried to get back into the download client, there was a window that said something like “Recovering Data Archive” and that’s fine or whatever. But then it disappeared and the download is starting over from scratch! I really need help getting the client to start off from where I left off. I have a very slow internet connection, so it’d be really, really inconvenient to have to start over from scratch.

OP as in being ultra squishy and die in one hit between dodges and being 100% vulnerable to conditions, no range capabilities (in spvp) and no stealth. The build has it’s strong points yet tons of weaknesses.

My Warrior can solo tank 6 people totally impervious to both crit and condition damage and dish out both forms of damage at very high numbers. 0 weaknesses. That is how you really define "OP. ";/ People need to get over their personal hatred of Thieves and look at things more rationally.

Also, we are so so squishy. That’s FINE if it’s a high risk high rewards system. That’s awesome and fun and exciting. Problem is when we’re high risk no reward. We “l2p” our kittens off just to be able to compete with other classes. While being squishier than everyone. It’s not right. Thief class is supposed to be something that is uber damaging, but easy to take down without evades and stealth. Now we are mediocre at best damaging with evades and stealths nerfed.

The problem we have with these nerfs isn’t so much that that specific build doesn’t need to be nerfed (although that’s a concern), it’s the fact that EVERY other build we have is awful compared to other classes. So, even though the effective builds that we have may need nerfing, the problem is that once those are gone, we are done. We have no other options. It’s like you’re bringing all builds down to one terrible level.

You will NEVER make more of a stink than thieves made for themselves from the perspective of seven other class communities.

Perma-stealth needed to die in fire.

Off-meta builds get some love with faster general initiative gain and a few scattered buffs to traits that have nothing to do with stealth-heavy builds. Thieve experience more risk from certain types of builds while still remaining hands down the class most capable of disengaging from any fight at will.

The endless refrain to people driven to the brink of hysteria by thieves’ bloody IMMORTALTY via stealth has been “learn to play”.

Learn to play.

People will always complain because in the end they have no desire to learn. They want their kills handed to them and so long as they want that they are going to be bad players.

If I was anet, I would make sure:

1.) At least one of my devs mained every profession.
2.) Those developers theorycraft the kitten out of those profession and give me reports on the condition of every stat, skill, profession exclusive and trait.
3.) Once a month, we collaborate about metas between professions and sand them down so that they don’t remain a meta.
4.) That the classes enjoyment is based on the playstyle instead effectiveness. This means that everything will be effective in everything more or less, depending on the class.
5.) That once the classes are close to how I like it, that they are not touched again until additions are made and the devs tell the screaming little kids THEMSELVES “We are not going to be doing anything to this profession until we add something to it. If you are having trouble with a profession, the best way to learn how to fight one is to either train with your friends in sPvP or roll one. Again this profession is good where it is.”

Because I would rather see something working right than just shut little kids up.

I wish developers would post some wvw and spvp videos of their Thief build ideas~ kinda like what League of Legends does with Champion spotlights. I’m very curious about how they play and how they want to and think they should play.

I support the heck out of this. Would love to see an Anet dev running Thief through a zerg haha or just to see how they roam/play.

Watching yishis play on youtube I have to agree. I imagine he is just very good and kitten make any class look good, but what class can do what he does with his thief in his vids.

Yishis is a phenomenal PLAYER, and is very fun to watch. The thing is that there are soooo many Thieves that just aren’t up to par with his skill level, while there are many X-class players that aren’t a very high skill level and can be very successful. I’m not saying it’s a really bad thing, maybe having a super high skill level class is good. It’s just an interesting thing to think about.

Yes, used HotW. Also used T2 Human Cultural Helm. The boot is the Mad King’s Slippers, but there is a similar model around there somewhere.

I’ve been playing since the betas on TC only. Rolling, deleting and re-rolling alts as usual (its a disease, I know). Exploring & playing in open world and blithely ignoring dungeons, spvp and WvW. Not my style…I thought.

But for the last few weeks, I’ve been playing wvw. And enjoying it immensely. And this from an avowed soloist in all games. That said, there are a lot people out there who hate pvp in any form. I was one of those and I just lumped wvw into that playstyle and ignored it.

Its not spvp. But until you can convince the general populace to lay aside their stereotypes and give the style an honest chance for a few weeks…it will probably stay the way it is.

Same here..honestly, I think that WvW is the funnest part of the game, and wish that more PvE players would give it a fair chance with a good group. Being on TC, I really came for the PvE community but now I play WvW almost exclusively.

Fun Fun Fun. I was a stalwart PvE players, but trying WvW seriously with a good party/group is so fun it’s crazy. It’s crazy dynamic compared to the slightly static PvE. Don’t get me wrong, I still love PvE, but WvW is the only thing I can really get into for hours. Imagine a gigantic Dynamic Event of baddies trying to take a major city 24/7. That’s what if feels like.

Hammer because I love stopping up to 10 people in a line with the #3 skill, the power and AoE of the #2 skill, the protection from the third stage of the auto, the trapping of #5 + Judge’s Intervention, as well as knocking people off cliffs with #4. For Mace/Shield, I like the #3 for the block and AoE, and I like the #5 for pushing people away when things get a little too heated.

I think WvW is awesome, and can only get better from here =)

I normally hate these rants because I think that WvW is extremely fun as is, and most rants bring nothing helpful to the table (e.g. QQing) . But you brought up a lot of valid points about WvW, e-sports and PvP in general , so I definitely hope Anet will read this. I know that they are working hard, but hopefully they are working hard on the right things that’ll keep their dedicated players dedicated.

It sounds awesome, will def try it out once I hit 80. And Lalangamena, obviously I don’t have much experience at guard since I’m a lower level, but correct me if Im wrong hitting for 3k per mighty blast sounds like pretty good dps.
