While trying to convince someone to try this game, I was asked what Thief sPvP looked like. This was my response:
Would anyone be interested in seeing some similar stuff in the future? I’m mulling over the idea of making something a bit longer in the coming weeks once I get a bit of practice in. (actually just returning to the game, but I used to play thief constantly)
Thanks for the input.

I remember none of this.
Look at all this glory I can’t buy anything with!
Buy chests. Salvage gear from chests. Use materials from salvaging to make dyes. Sell those dyes for gold. Exchange that gold for gems. Use those gems to buy skins. That should keep you busy for a couple million glory.
My hot pocket is ready.
Fixed that for you.
Also, horribly imbalanced games are what usually makes me bail on a server when I still want to play.
So I mostly stack my glory, with no idea or purpose how to use it.
Make dyes and collect/sell them for vast riches.

If you are rotating between fears, chillblains, dark path, and grasping dead there is no way a single guard/ele is going to keep themselves cripple free. The idea isn’t to cripple them though. The idea is to kill them. Spirit Watch is full of high ground and choke-holds. If you aren’t flouring as a necro there, it’s time to rethink your choice of profession.
Also, OMGWTFPLAGUEFORM
The necro was more than coherent… In GW1.
With the new condition system all that’s left is an empty shell.
What Necros lack in my opinion are more combo fields and finishers. Give us some play synergy there and I would be ecstatic.
We have access to the two most powerful fields in the game (ethereal and poison) and a blast finisher on a 25 second cooldown that can be cast at range quickly and with pin point accuracy. I’d say we’re pretty kitten good as far as fields go.
I genuinely feel like Axe/Focus is holding this build back. With either amulet Scepter is going to do more damage overall(by far) and I can’t see any build working properly without Deathly Swarm for condition wiping.
I’m also pretty skeptical on whether or not Rampager’s would be a big damage increase over Carrion.
And try using Sigils of Battle. They rock on necro. As long as you make sure staff is equipped before you DS, the auto-attack with the extra might should be absolutely bananas.
How would a PTS improve things if the current patch is just as broken? It’s not like this this patch is worse than the last patch.
Plus, the sPvP community is so small I really doubt a PTS is viable. >.>
I’d rather see super rare mini-pets or back pieces. Mini-pets are not usable in PvP, so the separation is already there. Plus, as of right now I have absolutely no reason to spend my glory. If there was a 1/100 chance of getting a mini from a gold chest that would be awesome.
A true madman would do this with main-hand light.
Sure, he should at least try until his team gets wiped and then tell his team he’d rather not go back out of spawn. But the problem is the first guy that didn’t show up, not the OP.
That first guy might have shown up if that was in effect. That, and there wasn’t any guarantee that he wasn’t going to come back on.
I wish AN added an hour long ban for people who do what the OP tried to do. Forcing them back in obviously isn’t getting the message across.
I heard the keyboards in EU don’t have a F4 key. You have my sympathies.
I’m pretty sure the soldier just has it out for you. He talks about you behind your back all the time.
Judging by the OP’s English he might not be on US servers and therefor probably not on AR, so he probably is finding absolutely awful people in HotM pugs.
Forget slows; countering carriers is going to be all about blowout and fears. Did you guys see all those bridges in the map?
Glad I main as necro, it’s going to be a fear-bomb massacre.
I don’t understand how someone can say an ability isn’t overpowered just because it’s bugged. Are you people saying it doesn’t need to be fixed because it doesn’t work right?
7) in sPvP, always try to ress as many allies as possible, leave a capping point if you must but save your allies, you can get those pts back by killing the closest enemy..and of course the more the merrier
It’s usually a terrible idea to go for the res as a thief unless your stealth aoe is up. (and even then it’s dangerous) Even with the tankiest build possible when not moving they’re still squishier than just about any other class even if that class is using their squishiest build. With a gigantic amount of burst it’s usually easier to rally with a kill, or just hang back and provide pressure while your teammates handle it.
As for getting the point back, I’d much rather kill a back point guardian before he captures a point than res a far off ally. It can take quite a while to take that point back. If it’s just a roamer nabbing the point I agree though.
Ah, and one more thing I forgot to add before in my post targeting the OP. Use your shortbow often. Don’t ever engage anyone in melee unless you can down them quickly and safely. If it’s a team fight let your teammates handle the stomp. It’s kind of difficult to tell what your exact issue is, but this may very well be why you feel like your targeting the wrong people and constantly watching out for a doom scenario. Thief just isn’t designed to take a hit. >.> Probably a great idea to practice ledge porting with Infiltrator’s Arrow as well, it’s one of the unique advantages that make thieves awesome.
also, what kind of options do you use on the combat? (ie: stop autoattacking? autotargetting?) I feel like sometimes i totally have a wrong target…
Turning off auto target is a must. Melee-assist has only caused issues for me so you might want to disable that as well. Make sure team colors are at least activated for the enemy.
EDIT: And at the risk of causing a flame-fest, I’d also like to point out that venom share really isn’t a viable build in most situations.
If you want to continue play thief I suggest switching to a burst build such as this one. (copy-paste)

Dropped on down state? Looking forward to getting on my thief and backstabbing for it at the last second in hotjoins.
Seriously though, wouldn’t it make sense to have it “lock” itself onto the ground for like 10 seconds when dropped ? Unless of course moving the orb was supposed to function as a zergfest where downing someone out of nowhere and quickly picking up the orb to score isn’t really practical/possible.
This is not a nerf demand. this is a request for a rethink on stealth. Those of us who play spvp will know Thieves and Mesmers are the most popular class’s in battlegrounds.
Maybe in hotjoins…
No. we only have 8 classes (as opposed to 100+ in LoL) and it is hard enough already to find teams for tournaments.
I can think of one e-sport that had absolutely no problem using that model.
This thread is misleading. My cat will not be happy when it learns that it’s appreciation and superior knowledge of hats will go further unnoticed.
Let’s remodel all asura into charr. Because that’s the only way people will ever play them.
Sounds like you are trying to make forced kiting sound like an interesting mechanic by calling it taunting.
Have you tried using Initial Strike instead of Trickster?
Razor Naga (default binds)
Except:
Profession Skills: Shift + 1-4
Weapon Swap: Shift + 5
I can’t imagine how frustrating playing with a keyboard must be.
Just wanted to make a thread where people could state their one feature or change that they would kill for in PvP. No balance stuff please because that never ends well.
For me, it would probably be a solo queue with matchmaking because although I love playing with people I know, I just don’t have the time or patience sometimes to wait for people to get online and form a group. Sometimes I want to get on, kill, win, and rank up in a way that it constantly matches me with players at my skill level.
Anyway, no need to debate other people’s responses, just say what that ONE feature you think would deliver a home run.
An auto refund for people who make threads like these. The first few hundred weren’t that annoying, but this is getting old.
It’s coming out in February 2014.
AN needs to make some friends…

If a warrior gets you to 0 hp when you are defending the point then you are just bad.
Or you are just really bad at playing the warrior profession. -_-
Play well and people will ask you to join their guild.
Whelp, doing pretty good with it for the past couple of hours in hotjoins. Guess I’ll have to try it in a tourney later.
Maybe I just sucked last time I was playing d/p.
I made a thread for this earlier and it got insta deleted.
It’s gone as far as I can tell. I even wall climbed out of the map and tried to fall under it. Glitched me so bad I ported 3 times in a row. >.>
Still waiting on custom announcers. Where’s my M M M M MONSTERKILL?
what is the solution? or another awesome thing you cant tell us about? just merge all hotms already
I’d rather not have the sPvP identity of my server crushed. A simple separate LFG chat window would be nice.
Defensive traps is monstrous.
Are you asking them to add Quaggan backpacks? Because you can already use those in sPvP.
Not to be a jerk or anything, but isn’t the d/p build you posted pretty much the standard for every roaming build? I’m running an almost identical setup with s/p except for the elite. >.>
How often do you actually go for the backstab burst with D/P? Does the extra init usage ever cause any issues? Is it worth going for at all versus knocking your target around a bit with the bow and then mugging/SSing in for a HS spam?
Gunna mess with it a bit again and see if I can get it to work. Would be great to go back to backstab without letting go of my pistol addiction.
I think that this update shows how much we need a single-match casual mode. A lot of top players have noted that the temple “paids” are pretty much just free tourney level playing, just with a ticket to enter.
Introduce single match random vs random and the population would explode. After all, if most people doing paids right now are semi-casuals, wouldn’t actually having a semi-casual game mode work even better?
I did a half-dozen paids last night with whatever group I could find. I prefer pugging, so I don’t have a group that I run with consistently. I really enjoyed playing, and actually most of the matches were pretty even—but some of my teammates hadn’t even done a FREE tourney before…:)
tl;dr what we’re seeing right now is that low- to mid- tier players like being able to queue for a single match, not hotjoins. I firmly believe that if you could solo queue paids, 8/10 teams in paids right now would be randoms.
A casual solo queue… Pretty sure GW2 already has that. The only difference between hotjoins and the temple experiment is that now players are getting skins that were previously (and rightly) reserved for organized paid teams.
Healing power has a disappointingly low payback for the investment, if you try healing power gear in the mists you’ll see the SA-XI heal go from 300 something to 400 something.
Actually I think you’ll find that Healing>Vitality (You can pack on the toughness with either) with SoM. That stealth trait is awful and it’s not useful for what the OP is asking for anyways.
I never mentioned Vitality.
If I equip the healing oriented PvP amulet the amount of healing from Shadow’s Rejuvenation increases by a third – which is somewhat underwhelming. SoM sees an even smaller effect from healing power (half that of SR accoriding to wiki) and is only useful with AoE oriented weapons (shortbow and sword) and actually hitting multiple opponents or you won’t hit often enough to make it match up to a regular heal. It rocks with Cluster Bombs on groups though, no doubt, but you don’t need to spec healing for that.
Vitality would more than likely be the only alternative to healing.
And Death Blossom is what is making use of SoM and even against one target it works very well. Seriously, SoM for sword and shortbow? What are you thinking?
You can use the skins from the gem store in sPvP now. Just double click the skin while in the mists.
Actually, this works with every skin in the game, even weapons. My warrior is in full Primeval and carrying around a Greatsaw right now. :P
It’s a start.
Don’t laurels have PvE stuff in them? Why bring them into PvP in the first place?
Chauncey von Snuffles III
’Nuff said.
I’d take this thread seriously if it didn’t involve planetside.
I also really love killing thieves btw.
I am a S/P thief and I love evading Mind Wrack with Pistol Whip and then auto-attacking mesmers to death.
With the plethora of games out now (many of which are Free to Play, and thus have a very low barrier of entry) it will be exceptionally hard for Arena Net to get players back.
What games are you talking about?
Has anyone done any math to show that a 3-Bar Evis doesn’t do considerably more damage than auto-attack? Because I think it does. >.>
