——————————————There’s some chance that ANet will rotate everything through during the upcoming anniversary sales (starting ~25 August, i.e. about a week from now).
Keep an eye peeled on this thread:

This is great information, thank you!
I find it interesting that OP’s TL;DR is longer than the content of OP’s post.
It’s not the quantity of text, but the words themselves that deliver impact…. m8
800 Gems of mine
Beautiful and seductive
Striders outfit, when?
TL;DR – Pls Anet, put Strider’s outfit into the Gemstore soon. I’m personally not a fan of this rotational store thing – it really does feel like a time-gated barrier to those who were unfortunate enough to join the game at the wrong time
My biggest weakness with D/P thief is laying down a smackton of burst, then trying to AA them to death (when they’re 20% hp, etc and stunlocked). Best thing to do is to burst them, re-engage stealth and let them waste utilities, heals, etc. and chase them down again
I used to main D/D thief back in LS1-era, and it was a straight “Jump onto them and burst to death”. New meta is 2-3 medium bursts and work them down
Hiya,
I’ve recently returned to GW2 from a 2+ year break, currently maining my Lvl 80 Daredevil Thief. So far I’ve bought HOT, just finished Verdant Brink, have full exotic gear (with 1 pink amulet, 1 pink ring) and just maxed my Leatherworking to 500. I’m just wondering – what should I start doing?
So far on my list, I think I should:
- Get 100% Map Completion
- Get full ascended gear (how to, I don’t know..)
- Participate daily in WvW, sPvP (so far I have)
- Trying to get into Fractals, only reached Level 11 so far
What should I focus on to keep a sense of ‘progress’?
I’m interested in a Stealth/Staff build. I wonder if anybody has tried a Vault/stealth crit build before. I’ve critted on another players before and got 10k crits, etc. so I imagine it’d be fairly decent
Been playing my thief and so far so good. Very fun, I love the mobility I have compared to other classes. I 1v1’d a D/P pistol thief in WvW and he dropped me in seconds (I was using staff, barely got a hit on him). Would love to look more into the current meta and builds and find how thieves are played these days
Boy, do I miss the days of D/D full zerker – Bas venom, Mug, CnD into BS days of burst!
Hey guys,
I’ve returned from a several year break from GW2. I’ve logged in, played a bit and thought “Hey I remember an outfit I used to want, I should buy it” – but I cannot find it in the Gem Store. There’s a GW2 Wiki page referring it to be a ‘historical’ item.. does that mean I’ll never be able to get that skin again?
Outfit I want in particular is the Strider skin set
Assuming you have HoT purchased
True ele/temp deal the most dps in this game both aoe and single but require some skills to stay alive and very useful with many boons/heal in group. Tempest is a great specs in game.
As for mesmer – yes mes/chrono dps is not high but very fun to play and helpful in many way, can easily solo champ or any 1v1 situations due to clones, also chrono have a very good tanking build right now.
War/Berserker – gameplay are pretty much the same as b4 just more burst. For PvE anything should do but the only build can be useful in grp us PS build, for PvP/WvW there are only 1 and 1 only build keep war alive – Def trait is a must, easy class tho.
Guard/DH – can now use longbow good burst, most balance class after so many patches, remain helpful and fun in many way, good tanker in raid, good for PvE wise but no passive movespeed is still an issue.
Rev/Herald – very strong, known as “boonbot” you can have perma swiftness, fury, might, regen and protection like a mix between guard and war, fun to play but still need serious revamp and bug fix – deal more dps than war even guard,
Necro/Reaper – a monster in solo play, condi reaper is one of the best condi class in game, can solo almost anything without a sweat, very easy mode class, both power and condi build are good but ppl prefer condi due to raid also can play as tanker in raid.
Ranger/Druid – a support/healer class, not much of a monster like necro but with pet and new heal trait ( druid ) can give tons of survival, a fun class, also has 33% passive movespeed, condi druid is very strong, ranger/druid will be a good choice to get used to the game.
Thief/DD – a strong dps class with staff, tons of dodge but require skill to stay alive in PvE wise. As for PvP/WvW – one of the most annoying class in game.
Engi/Scrapper – sorry i dont have much experience with this class can’t say much except its a great class for PvP/WvW and have a strong condi build.
You make it very hard to pick a character! I’m unsure if I want to roll with an Elementalist and try something new, or re-learn how to play my Thief or even Warrior. I’ve always wanted to try a Necro.. Gah, too many viable options!
I just want to stay away from the nerfhammer – hate having a character go from hero to zero in a patch
Might start up an Elementalist character then – it’s good to always feel useful I suppose. Would anyone mind giving me a break down of all the current classes and what their roles are?
So far I understand
Elementalist – Top tier DPS (the most?) with some utility I assume
Mesmer – Support/Utility
How about the others..
Doesn’t look like Thief is in a very fun place at the moment – I’m considering trying out a caster type class. Either Ele or Mesmer maybe
Hi guys,
I’m a returning player after a 2.5-3 year hiatus. I’m very interested in starting a new character and playing from scratch to catch up to speed/get used to the game again. I was considering playing a caster-type class for my new main (previously a Thief/Warrior). In the current meta/patches, who is more viable for both PvE and PvP content?
An Ele or a Mesmer?
Hey guys,
I’m an old returning player. Decided to give a different MMO a try (Wildstar) but due to the dying population, I thought I’d come back to GW2. My main is a Level 80 thief, and I had a Lvl 80 warrior as well..
I’d love to continue playing my Thief, however I was hoping somebody could update me on how thieves are to be played now. Last time I was active, fractals had only just been released, Lions Arch wasn’t blown to bits and I think Guild Weeklies were only just announced. So clearly a lot would of changed since then..
Main question is; what builds should I consider? I miss playing my D/D burst (Basilisk venom+Signet of power into CND and backstab spike) build
I’m considering it, I saw there’s a new class. As for PvP and PvE, what classes are good now? I was rolling a max level warrior and thief – I can imagine thieves have been nerfed into oblivion (as with all MMOs)
Hey everyone,
I made a similar thread about 10 months ago because I was going to get back into GW2 but studies took over (this was after not playing for a year, so it’s been nearly 2 years as of this post). I’m back, and I noticed we’ve got a brand new expansion out now also..
So can anyone quickly summarize what’s new to the game, what the current end-game meta is like, etc. I feel like I’m starting the game all over again, everything looks so different
Yeah post in in the wrong forum for the first time. this is me first time posting, ill go see if i can delete the other 1. By the the way, panda should never be sad!
I eat pandas soo..
He said they shouldn’t be sad, didn’t say anything about being consumed
Okay so it’ll take a while to adjust. How about gameplay wise?
Is it still Guild Warriors 2? Or is it more balanced now?
Also hows the end game/what do people do now? I can imagine Living Story makes up for most of the content, which is one reason I want to come back; other games (Wilds-omething) had nothing to offer for me, it was just repetitiveI thought wildstar is dead by now
If it were, how would anybody know? I suppose we might find its corpse lying on the floor of the internet’s kitchen two weeks after its expired and its putrified, but otherwise…how would we tell?
It’s somewhat active, and I really really enjoyed it up until near end-game, I just couldn’t finish and hit max level. Meanwhile I’ve leveled several alts in GW2 and I wanna come back for more. I really enjoyed the art style and housing of Wildstar, but faction vs faction warfare doesn’t work when you don’t have a playerbase to support it.

Hey guys, so I can’t actually remember the last time I played. I think it was the during the Living Story event where you were rewarded with the magma gloves from Sorrow’s Embrace (after a quick google search).
So basically, I’d like to know what’s new/how the game runs now, etc. I used to main my level 80 thief, and occasionally my level 80 warrior. Both were DPS-spec, how would they both fair? I’ve read that the upcoming expansion has teased a new class, which I’m stoked to try out.
I remember guild missions has become a thing too, although I only ever tried one out. And I did a few Fractals but not enough to remember them. Just a quick summary of the game as it is now would be great. I already know that Lion’s Arch is destroyed, what else is there?
If you throw in nothing but 4 daggers, you’re guaranteed a Dagger-Weapon back (of Rare or maybe Exotic-type, including precursor).
But if it’s 3 daggers, 1 bow, you’d get something random.
It’s recommended you just throw in 4 rare daggers, and repeat.
Colorblind as well and is certainly helps me. Speaking of that, my armor must be the tackiest armor in game. I know I can read the names of the colors but that doesn’t really mean much if I can’t match them. I’m not complaining I think it is funny.
Hot Pink is the manliest of all colors, I swear. Protip: Just do all armor in full Hot Pink.
Don’t worry, you can thank me later after everyone glances at you as you stroll through LA. They’re all going to stare at you, because of how attractive you are.
First, I have been playing GW2 Since beta and I truly love this game.
I decided yesterday that I’ve been playing for quite some time and I haven’t contributed enough for what the game is worth to me. So I proceeded to purchase $60 US dollars worth of Gems.$40 for mats I can just farm in the area that I’m in anyway? Shame on you.
It makes me sick just thinking about how many unsuspecting players have done the same thing just to be rewarded with basic materials…
> I love this game
> I want to support it
> WHERE’S MY REWARD
It’s not a bug, the pet just heals that much.
The GW2 designers steal artwork themselves.
The sailing ship with the red dots on its sails on the Frostgorge Sound loading screen was photoshopped from a picture of the sailing vessel Concordia.I made a threa about it some time ago, where also the artwork of the Hounds of Balthazar was mentioned being “stolen”.
Here a link where the ship on the loading screen and the actual picture are side by side:
Pretty sure that’s a paid stock; meaning they had the rights to commercial take advantage of the photo.
Why would a million dollar company risk that much, over 2% of an in-game splash image, one of hundreds? They didn’t.
Not the band’s fault; it’s the graphic designers. They paid him to make an album cover, he right-clack saves an image off the wiki, adds their logo, gives it back, “DIS IS NEW ALBUM”.
But yes, this is illegal of the designer to do so. Unless the album is strictly “1 copy for the lead singer, and he’ll never use it for commercial purposes”.
I see quite a few good necros these days, whereas I used to consider it a “trashy” class. Keep in mind, there’s still plenty of bad ones, so there’s a small stepping stone of “learning” you need before you become good again.
But the class IS viable / not trash anymore (maybe never was, people just had to learn) so I recommend coming back.
-It wears medium armor
For what? There’s already hundreds of waypoints? Same thing really.
Waypoints cost money, Asuran gates are free.
They cost money because money-sinks are needed somewhere (and obviously in other places other than WP) or else gold would stack up very quickly in everyone’s pockets.
For what? There’s already hundreds of waypoints? Same thing really.
Might be worth mentioning this is concept art from the Gw2 devs, not fan-art or anything.
Also, Dragon of the Deep’s name is “Bubbles”.
This is kinda irrelevant to your question but kitten you should start a private website with monthly subscription and share your secrets. Why use gold, when you can just make real cash instead?
Well considering almost every forge recipe has been discovered by users, and not just supplied to us (as far as my knowledge goes), I suppose there’s still some holes to be filled. That being said, you need to take future events/items into account as well. For example, the Halloween event made a few new recipes itself.
You can purchase it and apply it to any piece of armor. After doing so, you can transmute the skin back and forth between armor pieces.
For example, I can use the skin and put it onto a level 1 Chain Helm, use it ‘till I’m level 10, then transmute the Skin off of the Level 1 Chain Helm onto the new helmet.
I’m looking for a viable WvW / PvE build.
Something related to S/D, or S/P. I heard they were the most versatile and with the correct build, they can be used in both “metas” without losing it’s effectiveness. I have no idea what the builds may be, or anything such as that.
Anyone willing to link me/videos also linked to showcase the build would be awesome.
Friendly bump. I’m in the same boat as OP here and instead of creating a new topic, thought I’d just help spread the knowledge already in this thread.
You’re already there. If you wanna do higher level fractals then do some dailys, build up some laurels and get an acsended amulet.
Is that it?
I stopped playing late November last year, just before the release of Winter’s Day (the name eludes me).
My only character (despite a lvl 1 name holder) is a level 80 D/D backstab burst build Thief. I used to just run dailies of CoF and CoE, and only progressed to Level 2 of Fractals (I think). I am lucky enough to have kept my thief in full exotics, everything Berserker-focused.
I also gifted all my gold away upon ‘quitting’ in November. So, for a broke Level 80 thief, what can I do to catch up to the “new” content?
Man, it sounds harsh. And with such limited build options as it is, I feel like everyone will eventually be using the same builds and we’ll end up with an 8-way Rock, Paper, Scissors game; Guardian beats Thief, Thief beats Ranger, etc.
I’m off for the night but thank you to all the contribution I’ve received.
1) Precursors – Average selling price is around 400g – 600g, depending on the specific weapon. Inflation is constantly driving the prices up inch by inch, so it’s almost impossible to catch up. The only way that people can buy those things is to chain farm Citadel of Flame: Path #1 and to play the BLTC stock market game.
2) Warriors are in the world of QQ right now. While their Banner skill +stat buffs were almost doubled (which still doesn’t make a lot of difference), the nerf of Quickness hit them hard. Their personal Quickness skill had its duration extended by a bit, but their debuff that doubled incoming damage was not changed. Now the 100 Blades spam builds are only half as effective in the burst compartment and are still as easy to kill. While the class is still very decent in PvE, they’re not doing very well against other players.
3) Guardians haven’t been recently violated and they’re still very popular. I don’t play that class, so I’m honestly a bad person to ask about it.
Thanks again for the update. I heard Rangers are still a ghost class, but Guardians seem to be standing out to me. Thanks for the help Wise.
Edit: On top of that, regarding your Thief build advice, I’ve heard P/D has risen in popularity. What’s your personal opinion on that?
I feel that if I can’t find an enjoyable build (I’m happy with either Burst, insta-gibbing, etc. or Venoms/Conditions but its to an extent) this class is more than dead for me.

<Helpful info here>
Thanks a lot, I appreciate the update.
I’m considering dropping thief, as it seems to be crashing and burning. How’s the economy? Like, precursors, T6 mat values, etc. on the TP?
Also, as I want to class change, how are Guardians and Warriors doing? I’m looking in to playing as a tank for a guild/more useful in a lot of situations. Last I remember, Warriors were being OP QQ’d over 10k Strikes (can’t remember the name) and Guardians were being nerfed every patch.
Hey guys,
Level 80 Human F. Thief. I used to play GW2 from release to late November last year, then quit for a bit because I hit the gear cap/PvP was a tad dull. I used the good ol’ D/D backstab build, cause I was one of the founders of it at the time.
Can anyone bring me up to date on thief notes? Nerfs, buffs, viability of builds, etc.?
Also, if you’re kind enough, just bring me up to date on the game in general? I remember I ditched when Fractals just came out, I missed the first few days and quickly realized how far behind I was. Kinda showed me Anet wanted to jump into a gear treadmill (the whole levels thing) and I bailed.
So between then and now, wassup?
They’re not adding a new tier, they’re adding to one. I don’t think anyone will complain against that.
New legendaries? Sure.
New ascended? Sure, just lower the kitten prices.
Weapon: Dagger
Issue: Heartseeker does not work as intended (presumably). More often than not, it fails to ‘land’/damage the enemy at all.
Opinion: I think this may be due to a bug with hitboxes. Upon activation of the skill, the enemy moves and where you land (the location of the enemy when the skill was activated) counts as a miss.
You aren’t going to kill a warrior in a single burst. Ever. Unless they are full zerker’s themselves.
I’ve learned that it helps to carry around haste as my 3rd utlity, despite me preferring shadow refuge/shadow step.
They survive the initial burst damage but the 5+ auto attacks you get out after it, completely melt them.
…why I loved the crafting in WoW and I was ready to do whatever it took to max different professions on all my characters, but I absolutely hate crafting in GW2 and couldn’t bother leveling it past lvl147/151.
Because, honestly, I have no clue why that is. Probably PARTLY I feel that way because I believe crafting offers little variety in item looks and serves no purpose. But I’m completely clueless for the rest of the reasons why.
Any ideas?
Edit: oh, I remembered another thing – I detest shared nodes for trees/ore/plants. Yuck!
The nodes that actually matter (orichalcum, orrian sapling and omnomnom berries) or so scarce that sharing is pretty much essential. To be honest, the map isn’t big enough to have enough nodes to justify competitive-farming.
Perhaps if each type of gathering (Mining, Harvesting, Woodwork) were a crafting profession itself (such as Tailoring or Armorsmith), it might make the TP market more interesting.
I don’t. I get that the backstab builds need a nerf, no one would complain about that. But where are the other options we were promised? Everyone was hoping that they would finally make some changes to venoms and change some weaponsets which aren’t D/D.
The changes seem rather pointless really, I can’t see any incentive to change my build from d/d to anything else since it’s still vastly superior.
And that’s where a lot of people’s ‘trust’ in the game die. You ‘hope’ that they’ll change something, such as revamping the skillsets.
They never said they would, they only intended to balance them for now.
They actually said they would improve other areas to compensate for the nerf. I’ve been a patient man, but I’m getting tired of being forced into one or two weaponsets or builds just to be effective. That’s nothing like what I would expect from Guild Wars and it’s nothing like how other classes are being played.
I’ve played around with builds on thieves, but in the end you are only kittening yourself if you don’t play it straightforward.
I respect your viewpoint but I disagree.
There’s quite a lot of innovative builds that people just look over.
Ever seen a Zerker’s shortbow build centering on Ice Drake Venom and Scorpion Wire (as well as shortbow #3)? It’s crazy. I myself can’t pull it off very well but I have a mate that just wrecks face using exactly that.

Still doesn’t justify the 50% damage decrease on Dancing Dagger to me, could have been PvP only or 25% to 30% damage decrease :P
For the rest, yeah sure, can live with those changes. Just hope they will make the venoms/traps more interesting to use so we actually run something else than deception stuff :P (ok and scorpion wire :P)
Dancing Dagger nerf was a big hit, but I feel like it’s justified by the huge spike damage we can do elsewhere. D/D was just easy-mode 1v2 for Thieves, and I’ll admit that.
A revamp of thief utility should be considered but overall, I’m happy with the thief’s current standing.
I’ll admit, I’m quite a QQer myself when I hear that my favourite profession (even build!) is going to get nerfed. The recent patch almost broke my sensitive little nerdy heart, especially after reading the patch notes.
However, despite the so called ‘nerfs’, I can safely say that the thief is very very strong, OP even. Backstab is still immensely strong, multiple target viability has weakened (considering the profession description said we’re deadly in 1v1, but nothing else, that’s fair), shortbow feels a bit weak but still viable.
I can’t say much on the Condition builds, as I don’t play them. I’m hoping an intelligent (i.e. not a sook) fellow thief may be able to post their understanding on the topic.
I approve of Anet’s balancing choices. Thanks for the 200~ hours of entertainment thus far.
Everyone is complaining for ‘horizontal’ progression, but I don’t think you guys understand what that means.
New class? Sure, enjoy playing a Bard from 1-80, in content you’ve already done (perhaps several times).
New race? Sure, enjoy playing a profession you’ve most likely already played, with a pointless storyline that only lasts 25~ levels to suit.
At least gear progression gives you something to work towards, as the race/profession of your choice (and if not, why play?) to improve yourself. How can you experience a game if you intend on just re-rolling all the time with new content?
