Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
I have to agree about not being rewarded for your efforts. Simply put, the rewards should be appropriate for the content you are doing. In WoW, that is the case. In GW2, it’s not.
The frustrating thing about GW2, is the constant junk loot it gives you for doing the hardest content. If I run Fractals or Raids, I should get Ascended or Exotic level 80 gear to drop. If I run Dungeons, I should get Rare or Exotic level 80 gear to drop. The only time I should be getting blues or greens is doing open world content. Unless it’s one of those massive world events, you should get gear that is relevant to the content you are doing. I shouldn’t be getting level 70 blues or even whites for doing high level Fractals.
As for grind, it all depends on what you are doing really, or what you are looking for. In my opinion, there is less grind in WoW than in GW2. Gold rains from the skies in WoW, enough to easily support any crafting or gearing you need. Even paying for your subscription with ingame gold. Especially now with WoD and Garrisons, you can easily gear up for raiding in a matter of hours.
GW2 on the other hand, seems to nerf any sort of gold making that you can find and has basically made it to the point of, buy gold with gems, or be poor. Or be prepared to farm for months on end to get anything. Gearing up in at least exotics is not too bad, if you have the gold to spend of course. If you don’t, good luck getting drops. Crafting is out of the question if you don’t have the gold as well. Ascended, don’t even think about it. When it comes to gearing, yeah. GW2 has more grind than WoW. The only good thing is, by the time you do finally get some decent gear, you won’t have to worry about the next expansion out-dating it. That is of course if they decide not to add another gear stronger than Ascended.
In my opinion, it is easier to gear up in WoW than it is in GW2. But they both have drawbacks. While GW2 is a grind to gear up if you don’t have the gold, your gear won’t ever get out-dated by an expansion (as long as they don’t make a new gear with better stats than Ascended). In WoW, it is really simple to get the gear you need to do any content, gold is easy to come by and you can craft raid tier epics. But when the next expansion arises, your gear will be out-dated and you’ll need to get the next highest level gear.
As for the events and tired of doing the same ones over and over, be glad you have events to keep doing over and over. In WoW, once you finish the quests in the area, there is no reason to go back to that area (except for mats). There is no more quest there for you to keep doing. At least the events in GW2 are always there for you to do, even if it is the same thing over and over.
So honestly it’s kind of a mix really. They both have good and bad sides, just decide which appeals more to you and then go from there. Hope that helps somewhat.
I would agree with most of this ^.
WoW may have a gear treadmill. But, to me GW2 feels grindier than WoW has ever been.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
My go-to method for exotic gear use to be dungeon runs / tokens. After the 10/23 reward nerf though, it may be harder to find people to run the dungeons with you.

I know it would take longer, but…
Why not make both? They have different play-styles. You may end up liking one over the over based solely on how they “feel.”

Using endurance to block with a shield, instead of rolling. Basically just an aesthetic option. Make it a trait, an item, a setting, a gem store purchase, or whatever you want! My armor-clad, shield-wielding, beached whale of a guardian will thank you greatly
Much love <3
I LOVE this play-style in other games, like; NWO and Dark Souls.
I wish that this mechanic would make an appearance in GW2.
I’m not very hopeful though. GW2’s dodge roll is a clutch mechanic on which all characters are dependent. Introducing a active shield block would probably deviate too much from the formula… no matter how awesome it would be.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
As a person who used to run fractals since they started, comparing rewards then and now.. the loot is 10 times better now that it was before.
What’s in the fractal encryptions btw? I’m curious lol besides the mini and aquatic breather which I got and the 5 gold junk are there other rewards inside?
The little fractal boxes? I bought a 5 pack of keys from the vendor and received trash loot from all of my boxes. Since the ex-pac, my gold stash is no longer noticeably increasing. So, I won’t be buying any more keys any time soon.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
Too much gold in the economy? You could have fooled me I barely manage to have 100 gold and I haven’t even bought all the faction armor skins that I want. It’s kind of silly that some people buy legendaries with 2000 gold and then there are people like me that don’t even dream of ascended gear because of the amount of materials needed and not enough money to buy them.
GW2 is the first MMO where I just can’t make money, farming Silverwastes is something I just can’t do because it after doing it for a few times it loses all the fun.
So much this ^

I have to say I don’t understand the forums.
Previously: Everything is too easy! We have nothing to do! Give us something, anything to do!
Now: OMG! You want us to do stuff??? This is uncalled for! Way too much to do!
Poor Devs.
Well.. the devs misunderstood.
-> Players: “Too easy”
- Easy = not hard
- Players: “Hard = challenging!”
- Devs “Hard = timeconsuming!”
- But: timeconsuming =/= hard!
- Timeconsuming = grindy
-> Players: “Too much grind”
Love this post. This explains why I love the Mad King’s Clock Tower. The CT rewards player skill instead of lame kitten grinding / mat farming.

So I have a few questions.
Which paths were commonly farmed?
How long did it take on average to do all of them?
How much gold did people on average make after all paths?AC 123
CM 123
SE 13
TA Up/fwd
COF 12
COE 123
Arah 123The list grants about 40-50 gold daily + drops. if done right, 2h30/3h (guild time, PUG is much more random), sometimes more, sometimes less depending on how well you perform.
Assuming in a daily pug tour. In guild we do aetherpath aswell, and rarely HoTW.
150 -180 min (w/guild)
18 paths listed
8.4-10 mins avg… Man, that’s some serious hauling.
With a full time job, a commute, and a family; I’m good to pug 2 paths on a work day, Lol.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
The thing is, the majority of players will go where the incentives are best, meaning they could have accomplished the same thing simply by providing better rewards for fractals and raids, but they chose not to.
The question is why? The logical answer that comes to mind is that they feel dungeons are too profitable for people that stealth past most of the content. The problem with that (if, in fact, it is the reason) is that the change punishes those players that want to tackle it more legitimately.
As a player who is averse to grinding, has no legendaries, and tries to play for fun… I can totally back this statement.

This is a fantastic thread!

But when Ascended gear was released, they stated that they had no plans to add another tier of gear. They never said that they would NEVER do it. They stated that Legendary gear will always be top tier.
There is no statistical difference between ascended and legendary, so they didn’t actually break any promises there.
You’re misinterpreting his statement. The devs have promised to make legendary top tier, regardless of what the current “top tier” is. In other words, the stats will always be increased to match the current top tier, which is what happened when ascended weapons were introduced.
Thanks

First, there is no treadmill. Ascended gears have been and always have been and will ever be the top of the line gear in this game…

Events are your main source of xp gain. Monsters aren’t there for levelling purposes (although the killstreak boosts really make a difference). Depending on the event, you can level up with just a handful of successful events.
True dat.
If I’m feeling especially lazy, I’ll just run my character through maps to unlock the vistas, waypoints, and Points of Interest. I just run past the mobs, lol.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
Thanks for the advice btw, will probably get me to 25 if I complete the other races areas too.. maybe.
Only 4 levels? Oh yeah. I have little doubt that you’ll make level 25 if you work all of the other intro zones.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
I just returned to guild wars 2 only to find out nothing has changed, I am a level 21 thief trying desperately to level up.
I have two 100% experience boosters but I’m afraid to use them atm because I’m not sure I’m playing the game right.
I have 100% map completion in Divinity’s Reach, Queen’s Dale and Kessex Hills.. Although in Kessex hills it says I only have 42% completion but there’s nothing left on the map that havn’t been filled out. I’ve been in the boss train for hours on end but it’s so painfully slow that it hurts my soul, right now I can do nothing but grind an estimate of 3000 to 4,500 level 16-22 monsters till I reach level 25 so I can go on to the next area (Gendarran Fields).
Is it the grind or your play-style / weapon-set that you find boring? I ask because it’s an important distinction.
But to help, I would suggest porting over to the starting areas for the other races via Lion’s Arch. You can portal to LA for free by jumping into the mists / w.v.w. area (think it’s the B keyboard shortcut). I’ll do this when leveling up my alts. It helps a lot!

The New Build List is actually up to date.
I remember reading something somewhere about changes to the condition stacking. But, I can’t remember exactly what changed… or if the change has even happened yet. I’ve been out of the loop for a while too, lol.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
There is a sticky thread at the top of the ranger forums, called New Build List or something like that. You’ll probably want to check that out. It has a few dungeon builds.
The first thing you’ll probably want to figure out the weapons you want to use.
Do you want to melee or ranged … or both?
That decision will better help you find a ranger build that is a good fit.
For example, I like the Longbow along with the axe and war horn. So, I’ve been able to find/craft/modify a build that works with this setup. I can have my bow while also providing group utility. If you do decide to go Longbow, keep in mind that the auto attack damage isn’t that great. So, you’ll probably want to swap to another weapon while waiting on cooldowns.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
Great changes + fixes all around. I’m also VERY surprised they let Call of the Wild give 3 stacks of might. I was sure that wasn’t an option when they finally made it into a blast finisher.
I guess Irenio IS turning out to be Ranger’s Robert Hrouda 2.0. Feels good to be a Ranger again with a competent dev at the helm that will actually do some changes (good ones, that is).
That change was absolutely critical to making WH questionably viable IMO. The weapon has fallen into complete obscurity. Hunter’s Call is utterly useless outside of that MKT bleed build, CotW gave us boons we didn’t even need as a ranger, and the blast finisher was on such a long CD compared to so many other professions. Not acceptable for such a valuable offhand slot. With the trait that gives you CotW on pet swap, this could actually be really quite good. Dunno yet, but I will try it for sure. Anything that improves our weapon options is great in my book.
Looking hopeful to the point I think I will order HoT for this weekend. Gotta let the initial feel-goods wear off before I decide.
I approve of the might increase. Currently, I’m using a build similar to Frost Spotter NM, which uses a war-horn and pet swap to double blast my healing spring water field.
I can already provide perma swiftness, perma fury and near perma regen (if I drop HS on you) to the group. The added stacks of might will be a nice addition.
I know that WHaO is the new hotness. I may try it out. But, I just enjoy the group utility that my build gives.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
As far as the OP’s statement goes….“we” said we didn’t want the trinity by our original purchase of GW2….as that was one of the cornerstones of the game…clearly documented by the three roles being listed as damage, support, and control….not damage, tanking, healing. Just because some people couldn’t be bothered to read the game description, or because ANET is back peddling on the product they sold us, does not make that any less of a valid issue.
At launch, I think everyone was open-minded and willing to give a shot to this new type of party mechanics, but you have to be blind to not see how hard it failed. DPS/Control/Support never happened, the reality was DPS/DPS/DPS. That design led the competitive PvE to a dead-end, and a very shallow one at that.
I respect companies that innovate, but something’s only innovation when it’s at least as good as what was there before, and GW2’s party mechanics clearly didn’t improve on the classic trinity of tank/DPS/healer.
I respect Arenanet if they have the guts to throw that design away and replace it with something that is perhaps less innovative but a lot more fun, compelling, strategic and inclusive for the majority of its player base.
That said, I think they’re just trying to make a place for players who like healers and tanks. I don’t think they’re forcing those roles on us. I think they’re just trying to make them playable and useful in groups. ie: You can go without a tank or a healer, but if you use those roles, they won’t be a waste of a group spot.
+1 Good Sir / Miss.
I’ve wanted a place in GW2 for a long time… a place where my skills can truly shine.
I’m totally ok with active mitigation. It’s more interesting to me than a DPS rotation.
I thrive in the heat and take the pressure; so that my guildies aren’t carried out in a stretcher.
“GW2 needs a tank.” – to others I’ve b*tched. Hopefully the Revenant can scratch that itch.

Thoughts about Processor Cores:
I’d never recommend anything today with less than 2 cores.
Theoretically, if you had to choose between an 8 core 1.7 GHz processor vs 4 core 3 GHz, I’d recommend the 4 core.
The reason being, MMOs today (in general) still do not fully take advantage of multi-core PCs. You can expect most MMOs to use 1 maybe 2 cores at most. So, until this situation changes, you’ll normally get better performance from higher processor speed than a higher core count.
I apologize if this is too much info =P
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
As for the lag expectations, you’ll need to buy a much much nicer computer to come close to a zero lag experience.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
For what it’s worth…
With MMOs (such as GW2) you’ll want to focus on 2 things, processor speed and GFX card. The refurbed (yes, I made that up) i5 costs more. But, with the boost in speed, you’ll get more performance.
The real unknown factor is the on-board Intel video card. I don’t know how well it will run GW2. If you want to play mainstream video games, I recommend PCs with dedicated graphics cards. That said, if they’re out of your price point; you just have to work with what you’ve got.
Here are the min specs from the GW2 website.
Windows® XP Service Pack 2 or better
Intel® Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, Core i3 OR AMD Athlon 64 X2, or better
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800, ATI X1800, Intel HD 3000, or better (256 MB of video RAM and shader model 3.0 or better)
25 GB available HDD space
Broadband Internet connection
Keyboard and mouse
Looking at these specs, it seems that the i5 laptop will run GW2. However, you’ll probably be running the game at low to med settings. (medium might be a stretch; but, it’s possible)
If your heart is not set on a laptop, I would recommend a desktop. From my experience and research; you might be able to get 2x the performance for the amount of money you’ll spend.

The only change to survival skills that I would like is for the pets to be cleansed of conditions and to gain fury. Thatis it tbh.
If you spec into Nature Magic, you can use Fortifying Bond to get the fury effect you’re looking for.

For PvE? RF Barrage RF, Maul Maul Maul, RF Barrage RF, Maul Maul Maul. S/A is a little better damage than GS though.
For PvP there is no rotation.
Pretty much this ^
From the research I’ve done, most people recommend Rapid Fire, Barrage, Rapid Fire and then weapon swap until Barrage is available again.
Keep in mind though, that combat in GW2 is (supposed to be) more reactionary than mindlessly going through your skill “rotations.” It’s good to have a general idea of your max damage skill sequence. But, be ready to drop everything and adapt in the middle of a fight.

I’m not a pro ranger (practically new 80.) But, I prefer LtW to Remorseless.
Right now I’m using a LB / S&WH setup that grants me perma Fury with a double blast of Call of the Wild. I have constant fury up-time. But, I don’t apply it that often. So, LtW makes more sense to me. Plus, I find the tactical positioning for the piercing effect to be engaging.
That said; if you run a Survival traited ranger, I could definitely see the value in Remorseless.
Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing here…
IMO, focus is closer to what the shield should be…
Why does my focus provide more protection / survivability than my shield? lolThe blocking aspect the focus has is what shield is missing, albeit with lower impact but shared with allies.
Protection given by using Focus skills is only available through traiting which is arguably the best one out of that traitline if you (should) run Focus.
Shield #4 is bad, but can find niche utility in group scenarios and running an AH build. Right now, the whole concept of the Shield is funneled into group results, albeit semi-poorly, opposite to Focus which is way more solo and effective as such, and that is OK.
Wouldn’t make sense having two solo supporting off-hand weapons.
So what you’re saying is… One is for personal defense and one is for group defense. But, the focus is (currently) better at its job?
Edit: If so, I would propose swapping the shield and focus skins. It makes more logical sense to me.

Oh, and could we get elite skills that actually had synergy with and enhanced our build… or gasp created a build on their own?

The problem isn’t the skills themselves, or even the number available. It’s the ridiculous recasts on many of them, which in some cases like the guardian shelter, makes them completely unusable.
Guardian seems to be the worst for this. Often I have everything on cd and feel just useless.
Pretty much this.
As a control character (the replacement for old school tank), you shouldn’t have to be running away from mobs while all of your skills are on cooldown. I made a perma-protect hammer guard… but the playstyle of putting down a symbol and just standing in it gets boring after a while.
I wish that GW2 had a playstyle similar to the Guardian Fighters in NW. The shield mechanic may not be perfect. But at least I feel like a tanky-type (instead of running away from mobs like a dps).

Any way if we look from GW1 to GW2 the main changes is philosophy is moving from an single player game that you can play with other ppl to a full must have other ppl type of play. That alone changes a lot of things and add in a lot more factors to how a game will run.

“Guild Wars 2 takes everything you love about Guild Wars 1, and puts it into a persistent world.”
This sentence offends me and the people I know who loved GW1 the most.Imagine – Apple Iphone 7 Conference -
" We founded Apple to innovate, so Iphone 7 is our opportunity to question everything.Iphone 7 takes everything we know you loved about previous Iphones and puts it into this full qwerty keyboard phone with no touchscreen function, additionally, now we’re using Android Os."
Like really?
This is exactly my main problem with GW2.
We were promised GW1 in a persistant world, and that is far from what we got.
Also this was the original promise when the game was first announced, back in the day. That was all that was needed.
Why oh why did anet have to go and ruin the awesome combat system? That was the best thing about GW1 and they threw it off the window like a vulgar kitten.Anet give us the Guild Wars 2 you promised. I dont care about the later promises or details. Years ago after nightfall you announced EotN and GW2 and you said you would stop supporting GW1 to make GW2 a persistant GW1. We all liked that idea… why did you change that? You killed GW1 for this?! I loved GW1, it was my home. I am deeply wounded by what you have done with GW2. Me am my guildies waited years in antecipation only to be greeted by a repetitive and boring game with no teamwork and now everyone went their separate ways.
You destroyed communities and the hearts of those that loved GW1. Its lost forever now. GW2 is beyond redemption, you blew it anet. The only thing left to do now if you want to recover your old sucess i use the GW2 engine and make a GW3 that is what you originally promised us: GW1 in a persistant world.
Some of us prefer Guild Wars 2 combat. Static combat sucks. Guild Wars 1 had some great tools to build, but the combat was nothing to write home about.
The combination of rubberbanding and stuff like the bridge bug, where you couldn’t hit something on a bridge with a bow wasn’t exactly great programming either.
People have this magical memory of this happier time. It was a good game. I enjoyed it. But the combat system had myriad flaws, not the least of which was it was absolutely impossible to balance, and you pretty much won or lost before you ever left an outpost, simply on the strength of your builds (which you could look up).
It wasn’t called build wars for nothing.
It is sad that I actually prefer the static combat over GW2’s “active” combat system. I will say that in other games, I now find the combat to be a bit slow. However, I’d rather slow the combat down than have GW2’s one-hit-wonder combat system, which seems to have been built around the downed state.
But back on topic…
If you look back at GW1 and its system of progression and leveling, I believe you’ll get a clearer understanding of how ANET views the term “grinding.” In the character progression sense, GW1 only had 20 character levels. You spent very little time getting your character to max level. After putting together your max gear set (which also did not cost much), you could experience almost all of the game content. What grinding GW1 DID have was in titles and farming. If you wanted the ultra elite title or that uber looks set of gear, you ground your a** off for it.
From that perspective, GW2 is very similar to GW1. It takes little time to get to max level. And (in the grand scheme of things) getting decent gear does not take very long either. Once you max level and get the decent gear, you can experience most of the content that GW2 has to offer with very little grinding required. However, if you want the extra goodies, you’ll again be grinding you kitten off all day every day.
I think most players would want less “kill 20 of these” or “click 50 of this” type quests. However, this type of quest design seems to be the easiest to design; hence, why it is so commonplace in most games.

I couldn’t agree more. One of the reasons why GW1 had to be killed was due to how ArenaNet added too many professions and too many skills to the game. This was more than they could handle, and it led to some professions receiving full overhauls so they could be useful in a party.
Source?
Not going to find the post for you but it’s on the LoL forums. LoL’s lead designer Morello was the lead of PvP design for the majority of GW2s run, and this was the reason he gave that GW1 was never balanced. He also somewhat insinuated that the live design teams inability to think forwardly enough to account for this may have been the reason he left…
I know you’re not going to find it for me; but I’d still be interested in that source… expecially after you editted your post. I don’t play LoL or troll their forums. So, I really don’t know where you are coming from.

Ok this whole idea of level cap has a lot of detractors, but the reality is, there are many more people who want some type of progression, rather than not. The fact is GW1 didnt increase levels, directly, however the game was as gated in other ways, there were places you could not go and things you could not see, skills you could not get. By adding new skills, they changed many builds, and you were often replacing or destroying gear sets anyhow.
The truth is the game needs progression, it needs goals, and it needs experience as another reward. Now this doesnt mean they HAVE to add more levels, but levels are the standard understandable measurement that many people are familiar with.
Now here, i think they can break out of the box. Many people are afraid of their gear becoming useless, they dont have to make gearing up in the future be a process that requires you to destroy or sacrifice your old gear.
They could have improving gear post 80, be more about upgrading older gear through use of adventure, and skill points, adding rarer means for obtaining case gears.
They could make the gear stop at level 80, and only your charachter level and access to skills/abilities increase with levels post 80
But the fact is, the game really does need to extend the goals, and it probably needs ways to progress you charachters, i already have 7/8 classes to 80, barring new classes, there really isnt that much to do or see with the cap at 80.
In the future, to get me really hyped, they will NEED some type of goals, and some type of new interesting abilities/skills that i can work towards. They dont have to label it as levels, but it essentially needs to have a similar structure;
while i go on these adventures, i want to become more skilled, and experience new events, as well new abilities/skills/synergies with the classes i enjoy the most. GW2 had this, with all of the PVE only skills, with ranks, they skill capture system that sometimes required you to go to places you had never been(as well as getting the skill points to buy the skills, and later with the hall of monuments that clearly tracked your achievements and gave you special trophies you could view for your achievements.
I’m very glad to see someone who “gets” it. I actually made a couple of lengthy write-ups about end game and character progression around the time that ascended gear was released.

While I do not agree with how ascended gear was implemented; I still believe that MMORPGs (even GW2) need some kind of character progression to give players a sense of growth.

I couldn’t agree more. One of the reasons why GW1 had to be killed was due to how ArenaNet added too many professions and too many skills to the game. This was more than they could handle, and it led to some professions receiving full overhauls so they could be useful in a party.

“Q: Could we see more Guild focused content on Living Story?
A: Yes. You know we’ve been focused on Guild Missions. While we can’t go into detail. We do intend to bring up a LARGE number of people into events. Encounters where lots of people can play and have fun.
The raiding is very exciting but we don’t want to speak into too much detail for stuff that is too far off. We are working on gameplay that involves guilds and lots of players.”
