Ill be totally honest with you.
I cannot stand when someone joins and they aren’t a level 80. This game is designed to run dungeons purely at level 80, even the lower leveled dungeons. In the past i used to allow it but they are such a nuisance, and the dungeon almost always fails because of them.
I usually kick and block players who even attempt to stay in a party that are low leveled. Especially when they join quick runs/experienced runs. I hope I’ve blocked OP
You wont get a answer from the Dev’s, which doesn’t really matter because Konig is a known lore-master in the GW community so anything he says should be reliable.
Straegen is one of the worst WvW’s in our server lol Don’t mind him or the noise he makes. Frequently seen as one of the least skilled fighters in the game, heavily relies on groups to save his behind.
Bunker regen ranger would easily destroy all your characters play-styles
What I’ve learned from playing gw2 is that Zhaitan is a totally weak pathetic excuse for an elder dragon. He got taken out without almost any effort what so ever, which is why gw2 story has one of the worst endings of all time. So if the other elder dragons are as weak as him Tyria really has nothing to worry about.
But I’d say that Primordus is the strongest out of the elder dragons.
Basilisk
Lions
Raptors
Griffin’s
All found in gw2 but not pets
Short Answer: No, nobody outside of COF farming will avoid thieves or rangers. Nobody.
Noobs have a huge misconception of rangers simply because all they do is dungeons. Rangers and thieves are the two dominant classes in both pvp and WvW.
There are alot of bad rangers out there, which is the same case for all classes. Warrior are a complete liability in anything outside cof quick runs, elementalists are too weak defensively to be reliable, etc. There is an issue with all classes in dungeons when they are played wrong for that specific dungeon.
Rangers can do 2 things exceptionally when made the right way: DPS and Tanking.
A regen bunker build is by far the best tank in the game, better then even a guardian.
And a berserker ranger traited for full crit%/crit dmg is second only to the warrior in constant DPS.
The problem arises when people try to become hybrids of those two. The fact is though that rangers are built for their own survavibility, and their SPIRITS were supposed to be used for the better of their group, however ANET made spirits terrible so they don’t help much.
I’m kind of embarrassed for not realizing this before, but where the hell are all the lions in Tyria??
Did they all just evolve into Charr? Or did lions just not exist? Im trying to think and i feel like i recall something in Elona but im not exactly sure..
Thikitten me when the lion cub minipet came available in the trading post. And the fact that the statue in the middle of lions arch is an actual lion.. Where are they and do they exist?
CoE Dungeon heavy gear
I like your idea but there is one thing about guild wars you have to learn, LORE is extremely extremely important.
Anything that goes against lore is almost impossible to implement ingame (minus probably SAB..)
Read the book Ghosts of Ascalon.
Charr are actually not doing as good as you think and needed the Claw of Khanir. If they did not get that claw, the charr society would have fallen apart due to fighting within the legions.
AMAZING! post!
Absolutely phenomenal work while writing this, you literally thanked them for everything me and my guild have been thanking them for since release. I am very glad you took your time to write this, and i hope ANET see’s this and brings them joy.
People forget that GW2 is still a new game, only released a few months ago but SO MANY great changes and updates that they have brought, its so awesome.
You’re making a few mistakes in your knowledge of the lore, primarily by calling Sylvari ‘minions’. They are the furthest from that if the pale tree being a champion is true, because they are fully capable of free thought, expression, and movement; unlike all other minions.
Secondly, its EXTREMELY unlikely that Mordremoth will be the next elder dragon, because it is very unlike ANET to make us fight something they just introduced with no story or anything.
Its actually very likely that this dragon will be the LAST one we fight because it will open zones near the isle of janthir and move us nicely into a story fighting against the Mursaat!

I’m quite confused, not sure if this is a mistake or meant to be. I thought the planet we are on in GW2 is Tyria?
Why are there so many references to “earth” in-game? No Character in the game would even know what earth is because nothing like that exists in this universe, and the root world would be ‘Terra’ to describe the planet right? Unless I’m confused about something in the lore, hope someone can clear it up!
I dont know why people are writing essays.
This question the OP asks can be answered VERY VERY simply:
Melee weapons are the rangers STRONGEST WEAPONS. That is the most simple answer there is. That means that rangers who use melee weapons usually use ZERKER gear.
Also, the sword is also one of the best, if not the best, evasive weapons in the game. Usually players who use shortbow/longbow are noobs because that is not how you play a ranger. you pick one or the other. LB = straight DPS. SB = conditions. You can only have gear for one or the other
Raptors
Griffons
Karka’s
And effing lions.
Hey axe thanks for the write up and explanation
But this is pretty much obvious for all rangers that reach dungeons. It’s not really a tip that rangers should keep pets on avoid combat in dungeons, but a requirement that most know. Also, in dungeons you should always keep a offensive/defensive setup with your pet. Whether that comes with a melee/longrange form or offensive F2/support f2 pet is upto the player.
But keeping them on avoid combat is pretty much obvious in dungeons lol. Keeping longrange pets pretty much solves the DPS issue because they will stay and attack in the spot you currently tell them to attack from. So find a good spot and theyll stand in safe area attacking.
Wow. Just wow!
Just finished this absolutely awesome event in dredge haunt cliffs and cannot believe something like this just exists out in the open world! It was one of the coolest things i’ve ever seen in a open world game!
It basically starts when you find an ancient dwarven door that is magically sealed and a note left by it, which then made me and 2 other guys who were int he area go search for an NPC. But once you guys get it open, my god it is awesome inside!
Don’t want to ruin it for others; but its basically a glow in the dark mini-dungeon and awesome jumping puzzle with a very creative way to fight the mobs found inside
Awesome work ANet!
I’m very glad you were banned for Christmas Eve, Christmas, and the day after Christmas. Cause’ now i won’t have weirdo’s like you to worry about clogging up map chat while im enjoying the holidays and playing guild wars 2.
Well done ANet!
Remember this is the Rata Sum of GW1 and not the Rata Sum of GW2. These two cities are so completely different there is absolutely no comparison. That being said, it is theorized that the civilizations that created the ruins in the Tarnished Coast were either the Elonians (who possibly had colonies in the area) or the human race that were supposed to be in the Utopia expansion. Now whether or not this race of humans exists at all is unknown, because of the fact that the expansion was cancelled, but we do know that there is a lot more to the world of Tyria than we have any clue of.
This is wrong. We know that those technologies did not exist in those other civilizations, and the most logical answer to who that technology is either is SEER or the MURSAAT.
Both are ancient very very advanced civilizations, and the seer were wiped out by the mursaat. So most likely the ruins were of the defeated Seer.
That’s not true.
1. War
2. Guard
3. Thief
4. Ranger
5. Ele
6. Nec – Mes
7. Engi
This is literally perfect.
I love whirling defense. It has one of the coolest looking animations in the game (especially if you have a legendary or particle effect weapon) and stacks vulnerability like a beast. But i agree, it shouldn’t root you; its a rangers move for goods sake lol
I still use it though. I use it when the boss doesn’t hold aggro on me so i can use it and back up again.
The problems with guilds in this game is that you dont know who the hell anyone even is. Nobody has a sense of personality in guilds in this game, everybody is a nobody except the leader of the guild.
Especially if you join a new guild, and even if you talk alot people still dont know who you are. Then you go and make an alt with a different name? Good luck.. Then on top of that people just represent a different guild every day and it becomes even more pointless. Guild means togetherness and companionship; things completely lacking in this game.
GUILD wars 2 is an amazing game but they completely dropped the ball on the one thing that should have been the best, especially because its in the NAME OF THE GAME. It’s bad when the leader of a guild doesn’t even know 80% of his own guild; something that 3 leaders for 3 guilds have told me in mumble in the past month -.-
Let me be clear and help you in the most basic sentence known.
ANYTHING OVER 60% CRIT. CHANCE IS TOTALLY USELESS.
You’re missing out on power (which increases how hard you hit and inturn directly influences how hard your crits hit)
And you’re missing out on CRIT DMG, which is the most important thing to increase when you’re creating a crit build!
So, what happened after the patch? Do melee pets really hit moving targets now?
No.
Actually, from my experience they are doing a pretty good job at hitting moving targets.
I’ve been using canines and bears and they do a good job hitting a target thats running away, i think they increased the range of their attack aswell.
^Not the highest damage possible…
I run around with 59% crit chance and 103% crit dmg…
And lol swords and other stuff….
LB/SB
Can you list in detail how you manage this please? :-)
He’s trolling, ignore him.
I dont even think fractals gear gets you 103% increase.
^Not the highest damage possible…

LB/SB
You have no idea what you are talking about if you pair up LB/SB for a ranger and trying to deal the highest damage. It’s guys like you that give rangers a bad name and have no idea how to use one properly
If you want highest damage over time, its a sword. If you want to see the biggest “numbers” by using skills, its greatsword.
People feel that the DPS of a ranger is inferior because the ranger CANNOT post up big numbers instantly. It is a damage over time class. You will not see 12k crits or anything like that with a ranger. However, like i said above for example, pairing up the longbows 5 and 2 skills will net you around 13-14k with crits. Plus your pet hitting them with 1-2k each hit will increase your dmg output over time. That is the reality of the ranger.
I’ll Give you exactly the build you want to deal the highest possible damage.
10/30/20/5/5. Full Berserker gear, divinity sigils in all, ruby earrings/necklace exotics. 5 in nature to help you survive in PVE, upto you if you want it or put more in marksmanship. But you really don’t need more then 10 in marks because all your dmg will be coming from your skirmishing trait
I deal 2.2k per longbow arrow. #2 LB skill gets up to 7-8.5k. #5 skill gets up to around 7.5k. Channel those together and you hit about 14k on mobs. Combine that with a Feline/bird pet and you’re pretty much going ham over time. (These are all crit, ofcourse)
You’ll be at around 91% increase in crit damage, and about 55% crit chance.
Better news? Thats not your strongest weapon. The sword is, which ive tested in the mists (PVP) and it can down a heavy golem with QZ in 4 seconds with just the autoattack. #3 will net around 2.5k+ on crit, #2 skill can net 4k if both hits crit. So with pet’s hitting crit’s aswell you’re pretty much going to rock people! What you use as your secondary is upto you but its pretty much between axe, dagger, horn. I prefer horn in dungeons and axe in PVE. Really strong #4 skill which hits twice and can do 4k+ and 5 that gets up to 6k but can’t move.
Some words of wisdom; You are not a tank so be careful with melee, especially on bosses or dungeon mob. Use it for quick bursts when you don’t have aggro and retreat and use long-range. Then rinse and repeat.
Chain all this with QZ and sick em’ as utilities and your damage bursts will be very very high with your pet. And don’t listen to people who say pets suck and die, they aren’t using them properly. Use long-range pets when necessary and melee when time is right; swap all the time when in dungeons.

What I expect from the next patch:
1) Signet of the Hunt 25% move speed
2) Arrows travel slightly faster
3) There is no 3)There might be other stuff but I expect nothing. That said I am happy about those two changes.
Hit it on the head lol
Dont know why rangers haven’t learned from the past. ANet will not fix our class. Even when they left the rangers completely out of one of the big patches last month and promised they’d make up to us for doing that; they didn’t and changed 15 completely useless things.
I have lost hope
at all? even a little bit?
Reading this forum as a new player, I get the impression that this is one of the worst MMOs on the market.
The forums represent less then 10% of the actual GW2 population. And this is confirmed in multiple threads by GM’s who have said the forums are a strong minority but are not ignored.
To listen to ANY forums in any mmo is the dumbest thing you can do. There are like 15 servers in gw2, 8 are completely at max capacity 24 hours of the day and the rest are usually high population. So yes, there are millions who love this game.
Douzeh, I beg of you.
Do not get the impression of GW2 through these poisoned forums.
There are 2.8 million users currently playing GW2. Out of those, 300,000 or so are on the forums and even less post. Everyy server in this game is at full capacity 24hours a day. This game is anything but dying.
Long-bow is useless for condition.
Condition build is mediocore in PVE
Um, im a frequent user of forums and know many MANY others who also visit the forums. But OP you must be completely delusional if you think we aren’t the minority.
There are literally over 2.5 million users player guild wars 2, and if you count up every forum thread POST you only hit about 530,000… Don’t believe? Count it yourself, takes about an hour and a simple calculator.
Do you know what that even means? That means the extremely LARGE majority of GW2 players do not come onto the forums and give us their 2 cents. Only the angry, unsatisfied, suggestion giving, compliment giving, lore exploring, bug reporting user visits here.
WE are the very small minority on the forums. Please don’t try to categorize the opinions shared on the forums as being an elite force, It’s not, and most of the time it is just babies crying about one thing or another.. And the forums being a minority is by no means an insult. It is something every game needs.
30 into skirmishing. My crit is at 60% chance and 90% damage. So I rely on criticals for all my damage output (which is good because i critical almost every single hit).
10 into marksmanship for a small boost in power and 10% increase to damage. Power really REALLY doesn’t do much for rangers so putting it more then 20 isn’t worth it at all.
20 into Wilderness survival for martial mastery and shared anguish (this one will save your life ALOT)
5 into beastmastery for quickness whenever i want
5 into nature for regeneration
so i have a 10/30/20/5/5 split in PVE. Works amazing for me, I never die in Orr and my damage output is insane with all berserker gear running shortbow & sword/axe
It is not challenging at all.
It’s impossible to survive.
Respawns are just stupid. I’m at the Shore now and wanted a skill point so a group of us went on our way. Theres a champ to kill to get to said Skill point.
We clear the trash and then start on the Champ. By the time we get the champ down to a quarter of health all the mobs respawn and we die
How is that challenging unless you are in a massive group and as I said, groups are hard to come by.
Carter, don’t take this the wrong way but you are COMPLETELY wrong and kind of being a child.
It is NOT impossible, and if you think it is then please improve skillwise. I have solo’d all three of those locations on 3 separate classes; ranger, guardian, and elementalist. 100% completion all 3 of them and FREQUENTLY go there to gather ore and wood. So please don’t say ‘impossible’ when you lack skill
Orr is a total nonstop battle zone, which is why it better be hard. It is also the main level 80 zone so they aren’t going to spoon-feed anything to you in that area like they did in all others. Improve, and have fun.
I’ve played all of the races and i can assure you that the Sylvari are the best and most intriguing of all the other races. They are also the most mysterious, and even after all this time many people STILL don’t have much idea about them!
There are so many theories as to what the Sylvari could be; one of the most interesting theories floating around atm is how the Pale Tree (the mother of all Sylvari) might actually be an Elder Dragon herself. Not only that, the Sylvari are the ONLY race in Tyria who are completely immune to the corruption of the Elder Dragons, while the Asura are usually the first to fall victim. Their story lines are also the most heavily factored on destroying the Dragon problems so if you are into that mindset then Sylvari is the way to go.
The Sylvari are Tyria’s immune system to the rising of the Elder Dragons.
As they have awoken, so has the Pale Tree and its children, the Sylvari. They cannot be corrupted by Zhaitan because each Sylvari is just an extension of the Pale Tree itself, which is an extremely powerful being and un-corruptible by any magic.
The best part with the colossus was when he was freed and turned back to bow at the party. Could have done without the underwater fractal though.
Yeah that jellyfish fight was just an insanely longer swimming-in-circles battle spamming skills. That thing has way too much HP and not much challenge, but swimming through the piranha’s in the dark to get there was a very awesome and new concept lol
Joining a guild is pretty important in this game because of situations like this. But i do agree the being a shadow in guilds is very easy in this game and its hard to learn who everyone is.
So ill give you advice that i tell most people on how to make your name in a guild. Join one which uses voice communications, whether its raidcall, mumble, ventrillo, and jus go in every now and then and talk to whoever is in there. I’ve noticed that those people are usually the fastest to spread their name around the guild.
The dungeon is made to be more of a survival mode Danno. The fact that the entire team dying is perfect, because it FORCES people to play as a team, if 2-3 members in a party go down then one needs to distract the mob while other heals. It’s very challenging and fun.
And why do you need waypoints? If you die you get a checkpoint to return too, because like i said its more of a survival mode. It fits the theme imo.
Wow. That dungeon has been the most unique and amazing experience me and my guildies have felt in a long time in a MMO. So many different missions, unlocking the giant colossus was insanely fun, and then going back to the Ascalon war as a Charr made most of us yell “OHH SNAP!!”. It was amazing
The new dungeon is absolutely breathtaking; both visually and challenge wise. I hope dungeons will be like that from now on! Changes the entire dynamic of the meaning dungeons in games.
I think you’ve missed the point of the Pale Tree itself. Individual Sylvari are not meant to reproduce because there is no point of them too in their nature. The tree is the mother and makes every Sylvari related to each other, which creates an almost unparalleled sense of companionship that isn’t available in ANY other race of Tyria.
And most importantly, the Pale Tree lives through each and every Sylvari. In other words, every Sylvari that you see walking around is quite literally an extension of the Pale Tree (Similar to arms, legs, a brain to humans and others). That is why when Sylvari die, or more rather their time ‘expires’, EVERYTHING they have learned and experienced is given back to the Pale Tree; and she shares this knowledge with all her Sylvari children. (A close comparison, which Naruto fans will understand, the way he trains his clones and learns everything they do).
So in other words, when great and experienced Sylvari, such as Caithe from Destiny’s Edge die and return to the dream of dreams, the Sylvari race’s intelligence will grow tenfold because they will instantly learn at birth what Caithe experienced in her entire life. Which is an extremely scary thought because that can easily propel them to be the most advanced race in Tyria in a few more decades. Imagine if every human learned the things Albert Einstein did in a few days of birth. Amazing!
Hire this man to your part-time job positions Anet because clearly whoever is in charge of fixing the ranger needs to get fired and replaced by someone who actually knows what they are doing.
The last patch saw EVERY CLASS in GW2 see an update except the ranger and we were promised that because of that we would be concentrated on. But you completely lied and gave elementalists, necromancers, and engineers double to triple the amount of updates rangers received. Outright deception.
No.
In fact I havn’t even logged in since I read the announcement. The thought that everything I worked for, the world I explored, the skills I learned might all be obsoleted and replaced has stolen all enjoyment I get from playing. I’ve been there and played that game before, I don’t want it again.
Granted it might not happen that way, but the wording of the blog and Chris’s response both strongly suggest that it is. If that door is opened, my wallet is shut.
Glad to hear it! You shall not be missed! Especially because you hardly log onto GW2 anyways and haven’t in almost a month, yet you come on here and just complain when you don’t even play.
I will definitely stay and I am unbelievably ecstatic about the introduction of new powerful gear.
Why? Because having exotics really means nothing anymore since EVERY other level 80 you see has exotics. There is no uniqueness to people, and with new more powerful gear people will be UNIQUE and actually stand out.
New gear means something new to strive for, and for the more dedicated players that is absolutely fantastic news. People who were complaining about small endgame now have something to strive for, but ofcourse some people just need to complain and can’t just enjoy the beautiful creation that Tyria is.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the game, OP…I can’t but mirror your sentiments in all the things you say. I realized these things several hundred hours before you did but my ultimate conclusion on this bit of ‘virtual entertainment’ known as GW2 is similar to yours…it’s pretty with some interesting concepts in the realm of game mechanics but mostly lacks substance.
When speaking to fellow gamers, I often liken this bit of ‘virtual entertainment’ to the myriad childrens toys that might foster social interraction but are, for the most part superficial and without much merit on their own. To me, this is the Fisher Price MMO…the Barbie Fantasy Dream Costume MMO…it’s easy, accessible and the more $$ you spend in the cash shop, the more ‘surface’ you have to scratch at and boast of to fellow collectors.
For the most part, your potential in GW2 is static, with a low ceiling and fully dictated by restrictive, bland mechanics meant to showcase pixels over skill and foster cash-shop profits in the absence of a subscription model.
To a core gamer…one who values challenge on all levels and is willing to commit the time and effort it takes to be successful with chosen titles within the genre…this bit of ‘virtual entertainment’ is, although pretty, not worthy of the hard-drive space it occupies.
Oh, and don’t pay attention to the ‘white knight’ casual corps. who can’t or don’t wish to pursue gaming in a meaningful way…they need their ‘virtual entertainment’ and I think GW2 is it for them.
Sincerely,
I added you to friends list last month because of your constant complaining of GW2 on the forums.
Know what i found? That you have yet to log into GW2. Like not even once. Which means YOU DON’T EVEN PLAY gw2 but just come on here, use horrible grammar, and complain about something you don’t even take part in?? I really get the feeling that you work for blizzard or another competitive company cause you only complain about gw2 and haven’t played it at all. Sad, Really..
I went around with my party killing champion mobs around straits of devastation, and the ascalon areas.
We killed around 20 champions mobs. I had about 30-50% MF on, which really isnt much.
All i got were blues, greens, and a kitten load of whites. So no, there is absolutely no point in killing those idiots. Just a remarkable waste of time.
Yes the answer to this is simple:
They accidentally increased the drop rate of Dyes with a update few weeks ago. Which substantially lowered dye prices.
So with another patch they fixed that mistake and decreased the drop rate of dyes.
Only this time, since all ANet patches so far fix something but also break something else, they lowered the drop rates far too much. And hence, dye prices have sky rocketed since not many are dropping anymore.
i am sorry, but all i read is “700 hours played” then see pointless complaints.
if you stuck with this game for 700 hours, which is the equivilent of 17.5 work weeks at 40 hours a week… the game is obviously pretty good.
not trying to be a troll, but seriously, you need some variation in your life. its no wonder you are not happy right now.
I could not agree more. The game was literally just released. Which means OP you have been playing this game non-stop
So why the hell are you crying so much? When all you do is play GW2 non stop and nothing else, you will obviously find some flaws in the mechanics and get bored.
If you did something else other then play GW2 you’d probably enjoy the game a lot more then you do now. I do agree with a minimal amount of your points, such as dungeon repetition is kind of easy, and how 2 builds in spvp can just roll everything else in this game (theifs, mesmers). But everything else is so delusional its kinda pathetic..
The general trait layout is 20/25/15/0/5. Take the trap traits, obviously, but the rest can be tailored to what you need.
As for weapons, Shortbow with Axe/Torch, Sword/Torch, or Axe/Warhorn depending on what you want.
Oh dear God please do not listen to doombunny, he has either 0 hours of PvP or just guessing.
The build you want to go for is 10/30/25/0/5
Keep your marksmanship at 10, do not need anymore and anything extra will not change anything for you.
30 is for the 2 trap traits that give you control of them and 50% larger + double the duration of conditions
25 in survival to boost your condition damage and for hide in plain sight and shared anguish
5 in beast to get quickness on pet switches
Superior rune of the undead to give you more condition damage and toughness, making you very hard to kill.
9.8/10
No other game that i have played. WoW, SWTOR, Tera, plus all the old school MMO’s Had this detailed of an event. With different acts, different goals, different puzzles and quests
It was unbelivable how much time they put into this. So many rewards; from skins to consumables. It was amazing. The only reason i didnt give it a 10/10 is because of some annoying bugs and how hard clock tower was haha. But still, Amazing.
