Ele has issues sticking to fleeing warriors, thieves and good staff mesmers (from my experience). Other than that, ele has good sticking power. Remember rtl goes on a 40s cooldown if it’s evaded or blocked and it’s a really telegraphed gap closer.
So play a power build?
I actually really like when my character says “Feelin’ Hot!”. I think the vo brings alot of personality to the class. I actually wish my mesmer said something cool from time to time when i activate a shatter.
You do know that Elementalist has a minor trait that gives a 10% damage boost when endurance is full, right (With his build this minor trait is active)?
Also, Diamond Skin makes you immune to conditions. If the opponent is running equipment that grants very few power, his direct damage will do nothing and the ele can heal right through it due to his healing signet and high regen up time. Anything that applies a condition will not be applied.
So no, he doesn’t NEED to dodge because there isn’t any threat. The 10% damage boost is probably the better trade off. If the opponent was running a hybrid or power based build. Then yes he would probably need to dodge to stay alive.
So… Mesmer’s distortion, which is on a lower CD than mist form, can be popped to stomp while being invulnerable. Mesmer also has access to stealth to stomp with but I suppose they were just omitted from OP’s conclusion. Stability also creates for an “unblockable” finisher which is abundant on Warrior and Guardian. These guys popped a defensive cooldown (invulnerability cooldowns are normally very lengthy) to finish you off. I really don’t see an issue with this.
Mass Invisibility has always effected up to 10 allies.
Why change what isn’t broken?
Though i would agree its not “broken” i would say for Earth attunement is VERY poor as a “condition” attunement. I would love to see it get access to Torment. I would love to see D/D get a way to counter Range spamming classes and builds, especially those that constantly cripple.
Earth is a defense/CC attunement and is working fine.
D/D has projectile block, gap closers and cc, what more do you need against a range spamming class? If they range you from a relatively safe spot they can be quite annoying but once you catch up to them they won’t be running away.
Earth is also considered a damage-over-time attunement according to the in-game description.
D/D doesn’t have any projectile block/reflect and RTL is thrown on a 40sec cd if evaded. A thief and a mesmer can kite a D/D ele for days.
Edit: Magnetic Grasp is also buggy, slow and clunky.
Ring of earth blocks projectiles. I’m not claiming to be an expert when it comes to pvp but although people that range can be troublesome it is managable. I agree about thieves being uncatchable, but i really don’t see how you cannot catch a mesmer, unless you eat all the izerker attacks.
The thread has derailed and is getting more attention than it should. All I wanted to say was that I like the current ele class mechanics and I don’t want it changed. Buffs, sure, but don’t touch the rest please.
Hmm wonder why that isn’t in the tool tip, thanks for letting me know. I agree with you though, I don’t want the class mechanic to change I find the current function incredibly fun. I do however wish RTL was never nerfed or maybe had a 30/15cd and MG was actual reliable. I also agree with Ash, we lack good condition application.
As someone who mains mesmer as well as ele, I’ve never really had an issue kiting other D/D eles with Staff & Sword/X. If the mesmer is using a GS, then they’re easy prey.

Complimenting Carighan’s post, PU also increases stealth duration by a second. Other than that, no, mesmers don’t have a lot of stealth. With staff & Sword/X they do have an abundance of teleporting abilities on relatively short cooldowns along with Blink.
The same reason why people hate thieves. You can’t be war or guardian and faceroll the keyboard and win a fight against a mesmer or a thief. Apparently condition builds against the classes with poor condition cleanse don’t exist in this game.
If mesmer’s glamour build was still around I’d probably give mesmer a good nod for wvw but since it’s not, ele dominates them imo. I main both ele and mes (I even have 2 80 mes). Theyre both extremely fun classes but elementalist dominates in zergs. I do fairly well in roaming as D/D ele. Staff ele provides a kitten ton of CC, AoE heals, fire fields for might stacking, abundance of swiftness and on top of that massive aoe damage.
Mesmer main source of damage gets melted by aoe before they can even get an attack animation off. It’s incredibly difficult to get damage off in a zerg when your clones die before you can even shatter or your phantasm dies before getting half way through the attack animation.
I’m not really a spvp player but in Wvw, I have to give the nod to ele.
Play warrior, guardian or ranger if you can’t put up with it. The class is pretty painful to level pre-40. With that said, it’s still one of my favorites.
Take out archers/mages asap. They’re much harder to kite compared to melee npc.
I can agree with nerfing mist form so I can’t ether renewal while in said form but the RTL nerf is just too much. It’s pretty ridiculous they even considered such a thing.
Mesmer’s down state is pretty stupid imo. Even though I am using deception, I can still be hit with an ongoing stomp in an unfortunate circumstance. I rarely get hit with a phantasmal rogue from another player (They don’t have a chance to spawn it) nor do I ever get the chance to summon one myself.
It’s, in my opinion, the only real effective weapon set. I use staff for zergs myself but D/D is great for roaming, CC and generally staying alive. I don’t think we need nerfs personally. While survivability may be high with D/D bunker, the damage is pretty bad and generally nothing to snuff at.
I honestly hardly ever land kills with the bunker set up. Those Ele aren’t killing 2-3 guys in a group of 10. The reality is more like the Ele is tickling your group then scurrying away.
A straight 10% damage reduction on frost aura? kitten I can deal with RTL nerf; that there is just awesome. It’ll definitely gimp thief’s bursting ability since they’re fond of big numbers.
If a core mechanic of the game that is highly beneficial across the board messes with your OCD, this probably isn’t the game for you. You can still keep playing and not swap but I’ll be the first of many to tell you, you’re gimping yourself.
This isn’t even considered a grind in my eyes. As someone who has came from FFXI, this isn’t kitten compared to it.
I still find it funny that this was considered the worst class in the game a few months ago when nothing has really changed for it up until now.
Lol, aoe kings complaining. I’m not saying you need a nerf per se but if you compare to mesmer, you just kill mobs in 5 seconds. I saw a video of 4 elementalists holding back 30 people in wvw, that’s impossible with other classes.
That zerg was utterly kitten (probably had under leveled players) and they put against a small group of highly skilled and coordinated players. Honestly, one good thief is all it would have taken to shut them down. Quickness backstab combo with heartseeker spam and it’s over for one of the ele. Another ele would’ve had to rez him therefore the awesome pressure they were applying would’ve dropped off tremendously in that time period.
More than one good thief? That super cool video you saw would’ve ended early.
Stop using Wv3 for balancing and please take note that skill does matter in this game.
Eh, if it ruins the job I’m pretty much finished playing the game. Hopefully FFXIV: ARR and ESO are good.
Just two months ago people were saying how horrible ele was. Now they’re OP because they can Run away better than everyone else.
Right…
My jaw hit the floor when I saw this thread title.
Ele is one of the best 1v1 classes.
One of the best? This is hands down the best class in the game and I’m expecting and actually hoping for a nerf. I’ve been using the ele since the very first Betas and dropped it recently for more challenging classes. I actually became bored of it.
I started off as a staff ele and a few months after release I gave D/D a try and it was straight up easy mode from then on.
You can EASILY and I mean EASILY go up against 3-5 opponents and they will not kill you. There’s plenty of videos on youtube showing it in action. Look up a few builds (Particularly bunker builds with 30 into arcana) and you’ll be set.
You’re not killing, let alone downing anyone that is on the same level of skill and gear of you before being forced to run away from 3 to 5 vs 1. WvWvW is not the proper indication of what has to be balanced, is currently balanced and not balanced.
In other words, you’re like a fly who annoys a group of people and flys away before they can catch you.
That said, I still love the flow of D/D ele.
Took this pic this afternoon at around 6pm est. The rest are all high except 2 that are deemed medium in count. I may disagree with the work the developers have been doing (or haven’t been doing) but the game is booming. One of the highest user ratings for an mmo on metacritic this year. Maybe as a whole, people like getting new gear.
Also, all mmos or any online game to date has a natural decline in users over time from release. This is a given.
RTL is fine for me now as well. Magnetic grasp seems like it has gotten worse though.
I hope people don’t think the designers are the team of programmers who actually implement changes. The designers only really give direction whether the community approves of it or not.
That isn’t what the quote suggests. He says “give us time, we only have two designers working on skills” in a thread about the lack of fixes in the patch.
Designers (in this case) work on the creation and function of skills. They give the ok to the programmers on how they want it implemented into the game. If the designers are just slow and clueless on the directed fixes and balancing of classes, the process is held up. Whether there are only 2 designers or not, incompetence is still incompetence.
My suggestion: Get new designers who work faster, listen to the unbiased part of the community and overall work more efficiently or.. continue to lose your disheartened player base over this pattern of overly negative changes.

“Feel the fires of Balthazar!”
I love that line every time I hear it.
Fix RTL or just make me invincible while I’m doing it and I’ll be satisfied.
Having a straight +100% attack speed boost is pretty over the top; and this is coming from a Mesmer. Make it +33% at least because that boon is in a league of its own.
I couldn’t agree more. I don’t feel like an intimidating thief when I’m squeaking on HS. Guardian/Warrior GS is even worse.
This is the same person who played Aela the Huntress in Skyrim. I like the voice for such a hardy race of people. I like her battle grunts a lot better than Human female’s squeaks (they really don’t fit at all).
I honestly think the pitch is way too low for her dying sounds though.

I think they should just remove it from pvp as well.
As a mesmer, our #3 is a bit too powerful. #2 is fine, you just need to know how to stomp one. A person who has played mesmer always knows the second one is the one to stomp.
As an elementalist, I don’t even push the buttons when I’m downed.
Thieves and mesmers don’t necessarily mean an automatic win. I had a team yesterday who beat a team of 3 thieves and a mesmer while mine composed of 2 ele (me included), a warrior and a thief. Skill is still involved but some classes just have a clear advantage. (Clone/Stealth mechanics are a bit too powerful for the human player.) Quickness in pvp is just stupid.
I do agree with the nerfing of mesmer (which is my main btw) and thief in PvP ONLY. They should really get on splitting up PvE and PvP up or it’ll have a big impact on the quality of PvE while balancing the classes.
I’m a 46 mesmer and I honestly don’t see a difference running GS & S/S. I have 5 in Illusion and Blade Training. I don’t even have GS training yet and the timer is fine with me. I’ll agree about allowing phantasms to persist outside of a single fight though..
Deceptive Evasion does erase phantasms. If you’re using the Dodge Roll Trainer 2000 in the mists for testing, it wont erase a phantasm weirdly enough.
