To the dude above me. You need to go back and play those games. I currently raid and play with friends in all of them, and in comparison to gw2 how it is now, vs last Oct the ‘grind’ you are talking about is 150% easier in wow etc, in fact its so easy that i geared up a brand new toon in full purple gear in heroic raiding in under one month and that was not playing more than twice a week. I haven’t been able to touch that here. So your comparison is bad since you obviously don’t play those games, you like to use as a comparison for what grind even means, and sit here and defend guild wars.
This game has way more of a grind than anyone wants to admit. You should just own up to it.

Yeah I read his long winded post. The Sixtheenth has some fairly significant miss conceptions about how math works and the current state in other games. In 2 months of casual play in WoW PvP. I can have All BiS for non rated players. If I get go for rating that season and get it the moment I get 2200 then I go get the rated weapon. It’s always entertaining to pick out the people that just babble about other games that really don’t have a clue about them.

I, too, usually find that it takes about 2 months in WoW for me to have a PvE and PvP set at the level I’m comfortable with. I don’t do heroic raids so gear out of LFR/normal raids and heroic dungeons is fine. And, for the most part, I’m fine with honor PvP gear just to have a set as I no longer do arenas.

And, I find that the short/steep power curve in WoW is actually easier than GW2’s long/low power curve. As mentioned, when a new tier drops in WoW I grind for a couple months and I’m done. The rest of the tier I can relax and play what I enjoy. With the long/slow grind of GW2 the grind is never over. That sword is always over your head—especially if you are an altoholic. One thing GW2 has taught me is that a short/steep power curve can actually be easier on you in terms of grindiness.

In WoW, if I took an extended break, the chances of me being able to do the current content was slim to none. Why? Because the current content needed Tier Z to play though, but I missed the Tier Y and Tier X raids, so I have to start at Tier X raid to get the content, but since it is old content it was very very difficult to find people go through months of raiding that so I can get my gear to go to the next raid that gave me Tier Y gear which took months of raiding, which is needed to be able to play the Tier Z raid, which took months of raiding so I can actually play through the next raid.

In WoW, if you didn’t keep up with raiding, and left for extended periods of time, you were literally locked out of the content. In Guild Wars 2, this is not the case, you leave the extended amount of time, don’t have ascended gear, you were not literally locked out of content.

If I recall correctly the last time I played WoW it took me about a week to speed up on gear so I could get into the latest raids/dungeons. And that was during the first year of Cataclysm. There was no LFR, only a dungeon finder. The looking for raid option was added later on so your argument is invalid.

Aye, i did it last week while I was stuck in a hotel in San Francisco and away from my gaming pc (back in England)

Over 8 nights I dungeoned and raided my warrior from 85 to 90 and geared up pretty quick

Wait, what? Why would they release a manifesto for public consumption that is not crystal clear and requires “interpretation?”

What was stated was the selling point for the entire game for me.

Because everything does not always go according to plan.

You’re right, however the manifesto is 100% out the window

Thats a BIG difference

Except for it isn’t. Everything in the Manifesto is true.

Just your meaning that you put that Anet did not intend is what makes it not true. But for what Anet said themselves it meant is still holds true.

Also, thats me that asked

Guilds too quiet

You’d be surprised how much more active a guild can get with guild halls.

A place where you can hang out with friends that is exclusive to your guild. A place where you can actually do normal Quality of Life functions like sell items and craft.

A simple instance can add a LOT to the game.

Totally agree
In GW1 sometimes my guild would just hang out in the guild hall while we chatted on Vent

Guilds are massively important, BUT in GW2, unless you’re in a really big busy guild, the GW2 guild system doesn’t work, people are stuck on different servers and theres no way for Euro and US guildies to play together

Also people can’t see the guild chats of guilds they are currently not repping thus making the quiet guild chat issue even more apparent. The multi-guild system should be a great boon, but in effect it’s like leaving one guild and joining another at will and as such is mostly useless.

Yup, as a decade old guild leader, I hate this system

Ok, I’m sat in a hotel in San Francisco this week, so I’m away from my gaming pc and needed something to do, so I resubbed to WoW and as the guy above says, the “Grind” in GW2 is actually worse than WoW now
In one evening I took my 85 warrior to 90, geared for LFR through doing the new dungeons, then geared for raiding over a few nights (not completed, but already got two armour piece and new weapon) with the LFR
When GW2 is actually HARDER to get the highest level gear than games like WoW, there is a massive shift and not a good one

Now we all know, FOR A FACT, that the manifesto was out the window early on (although it would have been nice to know that on day one of release rather than after the games 1st b’day), but GW2 does have incredible grind

This is actually a big personal thing in my life as I lost my wife to a brain tumour, and my nan six months later to lung cancer

And this year I can finally do Movember aswell (only took till I was 34 for my full beard to grow through, should I grow up now?!?)

I’m so sorry for you loss. I have lost several members of my family to cancer as well, and currently my grandmother is fighting the fight.

Congrats on the facial hair! My hubby is 31 and still can’t do a full beard. I’ll let him know not to give up hope.

/sits back, grabs popcorn

Wow.

I see the point of being selective about what charitable causes to promote as a company. However , I don’t think anyone is going to say, “Yeah, I’m pro cancer so I’m quitting GW2”

That being said, I would definitely purchase gem items where proceeds go to research, funding of treatments, grief counseling, ect… for cancer.

They could release t-shirts (mentioned earlier), hats, hoodies, back items, dyes (mentioned earlier), harvesting equipment, weapon skins, armor skins, fireworks, pink roses, pretty much anything. I would love to see an in memory of candle.

Aye
I even pointed this thread out to CC Danicia in hope it would get ANet involved, lets hope they do some ingame charity stuff huh?

How does wearing pink help awareness? How does putting pink pixels on an in game character help awareness? Its dumb when the NFL does it, and even worse in a video game. It is a fad, and people think wearing a color helps. HINT: It doesn’t.

Is like saving starving kids in Africa with FB likes. It doesn’t help, it’s pointless but some people like to fool themselves thinking they are helping -_-

Want to really help? Donate to Cancer research. Want to help even more? Set up a folding @ home pc. Or just jump on the pink fad, and try to make it seem like you are “helping”.

^ this

This… I believe people are aware enough already BUT I understand that it is also a cultural thing and some countries adopted this as showing a support attitude towards the issue. Whether it helps or not is irrelevant at this point since it could be taken as being insensitive. Don’t forget that one’s mother, wife, sister or daughter might get sick of this horrible disease and what would we think about people not supporting (subjectively speaking) the cause?

Like any other cultural things on a globalized world, the best we can do is bare with it and join in if it doesn’t hurt anyone.

Remember aswell, us men CAN also get breast cancer

Just as women can get Prostate cancer

The only truly male/female split cancers are Testicular and Ovarian

In fact, here you go, from the NHS website: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Cancer-of-the-breast-male/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Breast cancer is often thought of as a condition that only affects women, but men can also develop it.

Breast cancer in men is much less common than breast cancer in women, affecting just one in every 100,000 men in the UK alone.

The cancer develops in the small amount of breast tissue men have behind their nipples. The most common symptom is a hard, painless lump in one of the breasts.

However, it is important to note that the vast majority of breast lumps are due to a condition called gynaecomastia. This is a common, non-cancerous condition where male breast tissue becomes enlarged.

Breast cancer in men can also cause nipple problems, such as the nipple turning in on itself (retraction) or nipple discharge.

yes, it’s a game, but its an MMO, NOT a normal, single player RPG

It’s about community (or at least should be, no matter what we all may think) and in this community, EVERY single person is affected by medical issues like Cancer

No matter what the media may think, these are games played by ADULTS (average North American gamer is mid 30’s, is married with a child and earns $34,000 a year according to a recent study) and it is adults that need awareness of medical issues such as this

Hell, if Comics can raise awareness of things like this, why not an MMO like GW2?

If ANet and the players are open to supporting all medical awareness topics that affect large populations of people, then I’m all for it. Singling out one medical issue over another, and especially a medical issue typically associated with one gender, doesn’t sit right with me.

Had this been a general cancer awareness month, I might not take so much of an issue.

To put it another way. If ANet supports breast cancer awareness month, but not prostate cancer awareness month, what is that saying?

Breast cancer affects men aswell…

prostate cancer affects women aswell

This isn’t a mandatory thing. It is a private event held in game for those who wish to partake. No one is required to participate or donate or support. I honestly don’t care who holds private events for anything. That is their prerogative.

However this is a medical issue, not a religious or military one. It is something that affects all races, creeds, religions, cultures, and countries. I really don’t understand how you can make comparisons of cancer issues to religious or military ones.

If they kept it to private chat, then I suppose that wouldn’t bother me.

The comparison is to illustrate how easy it is to justify something. I could make the argument that because most people are on American servers, that the war affects them all. I could say that because a very high percentage of Americans identify with a certain religion, that there is enough evidence to support a “rally.”

Again, I just want people to be aware and conscious of what affect these things may have in the context of a game.

On one hand I think this is a cool idea, but on the other I’m not entirely convinced this is the best thing to be doing.

The reason is that there are many causes out there that people feel passionate about. The problem of course is that those passions aren’t always felt the same by everyone involved.

So, while most people might be perfectly ok with supporting breast cancer month, they may not be as ok with a “support the troops” or a religious cause.

I think everyones heart is in the right place, but I think we need to be very careful about bringing real world politics, causes, and such into a game with a varied community.

In addition, I don’t feel that we should entertain any charity or money exchanging. There is simply too much room for abuse.

Pink Day in LA is an old regular in game, in GW1 they eve added a proper Pink dye for the day aswell

Unlike the other two you mentioned, everyone’s life is affected by cancer in one way or another and both men and women can be affected by breast cancer

Hell, we should also do a Blue day too for Prostate cancer too

While I understand that it is somewhat of a tradition, that doesn’t mean it is a good thing (appeal to tradition fallacy).

As I said in my other post. It is all great when the majority agrees with the cause, but it can become a problem if one cause is accepted over another.

Again, having your heart in the right place is cool, but we need to remain self critical to make sure that we are not doing more damage than good.

side note —- I’m not sure how I feel about reenforcing gender roles using pink and blue. But, that is a topic for another thread.

It’s not about reinforcing gender stereotypes (unlike the new boys and girls versions of Kinder surprise), Pink is the colour for cancer awareness in general, however as prostate cancer is on the rise in men, it was decided that a Blue day was a good idea because us guys are horrendously useless at getting ourselves checked

And also not about tradition either, it’s about awareness and support

I understand what you’re saying. I do feel you are ignoring what I am saying though.

What would you say if a thread was started asking people to support 9/11, or a religious holiday? What about support the troops if you’re against wars? What about feminism day, or female / male genital mutilation awareness?

We need to be sensitive to the fact that not everyone sees our personal causes and such as we do. Sure, we all want people to be cured of cancer, but why is this cause more, or less important than any other?

It may be more important to you personally, but that doesn’t mean it is to everyone else. Is there a chance that a person, sitting in a hospital playing Guild Wars 2 to avoid thinking of the chemo pumping into their arms, might find people dressing in pink to be a sad thing? What about that person who is playing GW2 to take their mind of their dying mother?

I realize these are hypothetical examples, but my point is that we need to make sure that as a community we are being fair and considerate to everyone. We can either do that by being all inclusive (meaning we let everyone with a cause show their support without being attacked), or we keep those things out of the game, and reserve them to places where they might be more effective.

Nope, totally gotya

medical awareness is very different from a religious thing (which I wouldn’t support)

Now if a huge support event for something like a terrorist attack, or lets say to support natural disaster victims (something Blizzard do with WoW regularly), these I regularly support, especially if there is an ingame item I can show to show I have supported the event, as long as 100% of that money is indeed going to that support/awareness campaign

But there are always items like this that will be decisive with people, LGBT right, Supporting the troops, anything political or religious will divide people
But medical care, support or awareness is something every person who plays the game can get behind (not to mention the charity events are a great publicity drive for the game)

Because of the toxic nature of the forums recently, some people are afraid to post their thoughts. Seeing that rampant disrespect and rude remarks toward the very developers of the game goes unchecked does not facilitate an atmosphere where others whose opinion doesn’t ‘go with the current flow’ can feel safe to post that opinion.

Hopefully, the forums will become a place where no one will be attacked, and we can all discuss issues like the civilized people we are.

That is a completely separate issue. When a noob says something that is wrong and a player with more experience corrects him without disrespecting him, then the noob should learn something from the more experienced player. It is not so with noobs here. They get hard headed, start trolling the more experienced player trying to give advice….and then it turns into a troll fest. See all “zerker gear” threads.

We are all noobs at one time or the other. What matters is that we learn and become “experienced”.

Newb = New person, without knowledge, but with capacity to learn

Noob = Someone that will never learn, thinks they know it all and anyone that disagrees is a Noob

I think the point of this thread (and correct me if I’m wrong), is that the game has take a huge turn from what it was originally intended to be since beta.

It’s not a matter of just those skill videos, it is a matter of the game as a whole. People are disheartened because the game they were sold, is not the game we have today. And for some, that is a bad thing. They wanted what was advertised to them, what they were sold on, what they saw in the betas and release. Not what we have now.

And it makes them sad to see what has become of what they once enjoyed.

The problem is, the original idea didn’t quite work out. The game lacked stickiness.

Its a MMO, and the MMO crowd wants stuff to work towards.

you’re right, they do, however thats only because thats what they have been taught

why couldn’t GW2 be different?

Because then they won’t play your game. Its like going to China and telling everyone ‘why don’t you guys start speaking Japanese instead?’.

It doesn’t happen.

Thats not the case, the MMO market is in a state of flux
The subscription model is dying, free to play is on the rise (and some would say destroying the genre), buy to play is what made GW1 work (to a point) although the end game there was PvP

Us gamers are now hard wired that bigger numbers means a sense of achievement, however this isn;t the case
Go play a real pen and paper game of D&D, a good GM will make you totally forget about leveling up and make the game and story fun, this is what ANet and other games companies could easily do and make leveling somewhat dissapear

Want to really help? Donate to Cancer research. Want to help even more? Set up a folding @ home pc. Or just jump on the pink fad, and try to make it seem like you are “helping”.

well if the items sold in the store for this have the proceeds go to the charity, then all good

This is very concerning to me.

In my opinion this is an attempt to gain power and control over these forums, not for the purpose of creating a positive and productive atmosphere, but for the purpose of controlling the content.

The sentence I just wrote, under the new policy could be interpreted as a personal insult under the new rules. Let me explain.

The Dev in this thread posted the following:

Insulting & non-constructive:
“Anet isn’t competent enough with this game”
“Anet lied to us”
“Fire whoever designed this dungeon/weapon/armor”
“whoever designes this dungeon/weapon/armor clearly has no clue”
You can discuss things we’ve said (manifesto, dev posts, blog posts, interviews) and disagree with them or even criticize. We’re okay with that. When it crosses over to insults is where we draw the line.

Its not hard to see what is going on here. ANet has essentially created an environment where any comment that they deem reflects badly on the company (not an individual), will be stricken from the record. They’ve created an environment where users must now very carefully, and very meticulously dance on eggshells to avoid what may or may not be considered a personal insult.

This kind of “force field” moderation will surely work in their favour, but will by no means improve the communication, nor productivity of these forums.

Wow…even writing this post is becoming increasingly difficult as I attempt to find a way to be clear in my criticism, but not “insulting” to an individual, which in ANet’s eyes is also all of ANet.

Perhaps I’ll approach this a different way. Here is what I believe will be the eventual outcome of this new approach to communication.

1. Some players, fully meaning to be fair and constructive will find themselves on the wrong side of interpretation, thus leading to a suspension.

2. As ANet systematically deletes posts and users that they deem “insulting”, players will start to become increasingly agitated and afraid to post.

3. The forums, while visually “positive” to any outside viewer (AKA Google, Game review sites, potential customers), the quality of communication will drop.

4. Eventually ANet will be stuck with a community of players where the majority are free from criticism, and the rest are very, very careful with what they post.

5. Players that have been suspended, are likely to personally feel insulted based on how they interpret the situation, and are less likely in the long run to contribute to the game, or the community.

I have seen this before on many software, and gaming forums. Whenever a company attempts to put themselves in a position where they can’t be touched, and additionally have the power to suspend, or ban anyone who they feel doesn’t paint them in a positive light, it almost always leads to disaster.

Anyway, based on the moderation practices I’ve personally experienced, I fully expect that my days are numbered here. Once I feel that I can no longer openly and honestly provide my feedback into this game, I will be moving on.

Communication is a two way street, and respect is earned. When an individual or company attempts to control either of those through the use of power, or control, then communication will inevitably break down.

An amazing post

Well said and very well worded!

If they are angry, they are angry for a reason

You can be angry. You can state your opinions. You can say how frustrated you are. We ask that you are respectful towards each other, as well as our staff.

You’re right, it does
However people feel it is not coming the other way
the community feels ignored

Frankly? It needs to change so we can move forward together to make a more positive environment for us all. We’re committed to this whole process and we know that folks are going to to have difficulties.

Our team believes that if we can get everyone on track, up the communication all around, and make it more welcoming for the lurkers, it will be come a place where we really can have conversations with each other.

Our Moderation Team removed content which was off-topic to the thread. We’d like to keep this open for discussion, but we would also like it to stay on-topic.

The topic being how best to observe that the new policy is draconian and delivered in threatening/amateurish tone without ever implying that the people who would initiate such a policy are by extension draconian or threating/amateurish.

Its like waltzing in a minefield .

To be fair to everyone, the only thing which has changed in our policy is the insulting of our staff.

Be respectful, be critical. Don’t be rude = Normal forum rules we already have in place.

Name-calling, threats (via forums/PMs/appeals tickets) = 2 week suspension for first offense, permanent ban for the second offense.

Totally good with that Danicia, and none of you guys deserve some of the bile, BUT it is very difficult getting a straight answer in the last year or so
Surely this can be seen as a reason for some of the anger towards the company and those representing it?

It’s pretty obvious that the last part – the whole " You have been warned " part was unnecessary.
Apart from that while I do agree that insults directed at staff members are not alright – i do not believe the accusation of lying is an insult.
It is not. It is an accusation. Which can be false or not – the person could or could not have been lying but being accused of lying is not an insult.
Especially since the whole " Arenanet lied to us " situation has a lot of grey area going for it. There was a lot of advertising that made a lot of players ( myself included) preorder the game – we gave our money based on what we were told and what we were told was then not reflected in the game.

So yes – it’s a grey area. I agree with the no-insult policy but to throw in accusations of lying in the same pot as calling someone names or insulting them is wrong in my opinion.

Exactly

If the community believe a lie has been told, then it is upto the game company to prove that they didn’t, OR give a solid reason why the change was made

However, promises were made, promises were broken… People believe they didn’t get the game they were paying for

Actually my replies were ON TOPIC about what PRESS can say

I also commented that maybe killing the official forums and going back to unofficial community lead ones would be better

as each fan site had a typical way of saying something, from there you’d get various better insight into your community

You did not answer the overall question. Profanity, name-calling pretty easy to define. The issue is the vagueness of the term ‘personal attack’ in light of the fact that the moderation team has a rather…. random approach to moderation.

Also for the record ‘you have been warned’ comment makes people take the official post…. probably in a different direction than intended.

We’re definitely working on retooling and improving Moderation and messaging.
Using locoman.1974’s post to reiterate:

Constructive:
“I don’t like the way Anet is handling the game”
“I find this new dungeon path boring because XXXX”
“I think these armor/weapon designs are ugly”

Insulting & non-constructive:
“Anet isn’t competent enough with this game”
“Anet lied to us”
“Fire whoever designed this dungeon/weapon/armor”
“whoever designes this dungeon/weapon/armor clearly has no clue”

You can discuss things we’ve said (manifesto, dev posts, blog posts, interviews) and disagree with them or even criticize. We’re okay with that. When it crosses over to insults is where we draw the line.

I have to ask though, instead of lies, should we call them “U Turns” instead?

Because some say they are the same thing

You can say “xxxxx conflicts with the Manifesto”. Maybe.

Frankly if you’re having to ask how to communicate around the rules, you’re safer just not bringing it up.

So, i guess, any mentions about Manifesto (unless brought up in a positive way) are no longer allowed, right? Or, in general, commenting about what devs said at some point and how this compares to the current game?

Well I guess I won’t be welcome to Q&A’s after asking about it at Eurogamer

Arenanet totally forgot GW1 fans?

I understand that everyone wants money. The question is about why someone as good as creators of GW1 decided to buy people with cheap marketing instead of quality and advanced community.
You know for example in GW1 even armor clipping between different sets was getting fixed… While in GW2 even mechanics are not anywhere near being in place. Not even to mention the outstanding (even though DX9) graphics… with eye-bleeding animations and skins.
I do feel this game going wrong way when my guildies tell me that hair clipping during any movement and 1 meter long daggers held at the very tip of handle is normal.

Unfortunately, the ArenaNet that made GW1 and came up with the GW2 “manifesto” is not the same ArenaNet we have now

RIP ArenaNet
