If the time to get other legendary backpacks were equal this wouldn’t be an issue. This really sets a bad precedent for future items in WvW because they’re essentially devaluing the game play by overhauling the item and its requirements.
Majority of wvw players are happy as it’s, just pvers complaining. old wvwers would like to see even rank limit you have to reach before entering main wvw maps.
Majority of players you say? I would love to see on what are you actually basing your statistics…from my experience, in game i havent found a single player who is actually happy about this changes, and is really easy to understand why is that, on its core its extremely unfair ….. snip
Two things:
1) people vote with their actions. If nobody is happy with the update then why are there queues all over the place? This morning at 10 we had an EBG queue of 30! In the evening all bl’s and EBG have queues of 30 min – 2 hours.
2) people leaving WvW because some of the rewards take a long time to get? Just not happening. The Ultimate Dominator title is out of reach for almost everybody, and no one is comlaining about that.
Because a lot of people (and seemingly devs in particular) seem to confuse things people will put themselves through for a reward, with what they ENJOY doing. In a certain other game I did a whole lot of dungeon grinding every week to max out a currency to be able to boost my gear’s stats by 10 iLvls. Did I have to do it? No. Did my guild NEED me to do it? No, we already had everything on farm. Does doing it mean I enjoyed it? No. So why did I do it? Cuz “10 iLvls is shiny dude!” and not doing it would be equaled to “slacking”. People complained about this mechanic like crazy. It was still reintroduced in the next expansion cuz “people loved it last time!”.. No, people did it. They didn’t love doing it. There’s a difference.
Same thing for earning WvW Ranks now. I will get to rank 2000 if I have to, but being on a pretty toxic WvW server I most of the time will not enjoy doing it. I’ve already disabled Team chat cuz it’s so full of hate towards “newbies” and “PvE plebs” and “zomg PvE:ers go k*ll yourselves” nonsense..
And for anyone saying “Well WvW:ers want special things too, they deserve to be rewarded for all their work!”: Does that mean you agree that the next PvE “specific” item requires you to have 20k AP to obtain? You already have WvW specific titles etc.. Now you have some really awesome rewards too (otherwise us “PvE plebs” wouldn’t come into WvW to obtain them).. But you seem to confuse “unique to WvW” with “only super duper hardcore and have been for years should be allowed to have them”. This attitude doesn’t really exist in the other game modes, so I’m a bit confused as to why WvW:ers seems to think they’re such a special group.
So you want to grind 2 years for a ascended armor in a game mode you do not like?
Imho the point of these high rank requiremens is especially that it turns off grinders, and rewards players that like to play WvW. If you like it you will get the rewards eventually and it will not feel like a grind.
As a PvX completionist, yes, I will.
I don’t want to, nor will I be all smiles about it, but I will do it.
And it will feel like an unproportionately huge grind that’s for sure.I mean.. Rank 350 for a Legendary Back, Rank 2000 for an Ascended Armor with a few extra particle effects.. But it is an addition to my wardrobe and some pieces look really nice, so..
Now I’m just hoping they go the same way in other game modes; Next shiny PvP thing requires Dragon Rank (not that that says much more than a 2k+ ranker that Karma Trained in EoTM but hey, who cares right?) and that the next shiny armor in PvE requires 20000 Achievement Points and full map completion on atleast 2 characters in addition to whatever grind it it takes. (Of course this sounds absolutely ridiculous, it’s supposed to)
That you chose to play an “unrewarding” game mode exclusively for years because (I’m assuming here) YOU ENJOYED IT ANYWAY does not entitle you to anything more than someone that chose to dedicate their time to another game mode.
I appreciate you being frank, and of course it is your choice on how you spend your time.
Regarding the ‘entitlement’: No, I do not feel entitled; the shiny is not even high on my wish list. We play WvW for the fun and the glory. Getting this reward after a very long time (indeed years) when the WvW rewards were puny is however very welcome.
A tip: If you really have to spend such a long time in WvW try to make the most of it. If your server is toxic, then go to another one. I have only experience at Far Shiverpeaks, but from what I hear the atmosphere at most servers is fine. Ignore the trolls and play with people you enjoy spending time with. There are many ways to play WvW (zerg, roaming, havoc), and you can choose how you want to play. You can play very serious or extremely casual. Take an interest in the game and maybe you will like WvW by the time you get to rank 2000.

You either didnt read everything that i wrote or you are trying really hard to not undestand the issue here.
Yes as we are seeing so far, there are a lot more of players going to WvW right now, happened before with the Tournament. But this is just a short term result, in the long term what we will probably have will be the queues going back to normal. Reason of this is bacause the system is completely unfair. Diamond ranks playing on 1º rank servers will get a reward/effort more balanced(in my opinion still to much effort for little reward) while a new player in a 3º rank world will get a insane reward/effort, like was it was said before, 8~9hours a day to get diamond chest at the end of the week. Guess insane its not even the right word to describe this, and I cant believe that someone actually think this is anywhere near right. Take in consideration that someone who can complete all chest during the week, will still take months to unlock a full set of armor, now imagine a player who cant do that and only have few hours to play the game during the week(family, college, job, etc), and might get at max at silver/gold chest, for this player will take like allmost if not a whole year to get a full set of armor.
You might say that this is fair, but thats not how things work(or shouldnt). This game have 3 game modes, and is important to try to keep some kind of balance between then. When you compare how do you obtain itens(armor, trinkets, backpacks, etc) in PvE and PvP and then compare it with this new reward system in WvW, it becomes really clear that the devs made a huge mistake.
I am mainly a PvP player(Used to play a lot of WvW, but this was long ago), and if during the League, Anet dicided that player that are Dragon Ranks(Its common thing right now, but imagine if this was the old rank system) should get more rewarded then other players, I would say the same thing, after all, the reward for beign a Dragon would be(or should be) have a better knowledge on the game, the maps, professions, etc, so by logic, your win ratio would be higher, would get more pips, progress faster on the Legendary Achievement, etc…but why the same logic cant be applied to WvW? Why cant we have a system that actually reward you for what are doing? Instead of join a squad and get some objectives and then AFK at the spawn, why not make a system that rewards you each time you take “X” number of camps/tower/keeps or kill other players, any kind of activite on WvW, from taking Stonemist to recruiting the NPCs. You do the event and its done, you get your tickets, no need to wait for hours(minutes to some players, whole days for others) to complete that pips nonsense.
Also, you cant compare a title with a skin. Honestly, nobody cares for titles simple as that.
Honestly I would like to see some arguments of the people who are in favor of this….so far what I seen is just things like “I played this game mode longer so I deserve more rewards”(probably abused Edge of the Mist farm).
I was referring to the topic “lower the rank requirement for T3 armor”; something to which I do not agree.
One of your other points I agree with: Veteran players should not get more pips because of more ranks. Apart from that, the pip award system is probably as good a system as is possible, since it is difficult to measure the contribution of a player in wvw.
The time to get the armor or the legendary is long, but that is not very different from similar items. I play casually, and it took me three seasons to get the PvP legendary. In WvW I expect (I’m about rank 2300) it to take a year to get everything. For these items that’s fine and not too long.
If the time to get other legendary backpacks were equal this wouldn’t be an issue. This really sets a bad precedent for future items in WvW because they’re essentially devaluing the game play by overhauling the item and its requirements.

Lets look at the time required to get to rank 2000 compared to the time required to craft the gear yourself. WvWrs have been looking for a way to get their hands on Ascended armor/weapons, only to be given a means that far far exceeds what is expected in the PvErs world.
a scale for T1 to T3 such as Rank 250 – Rank 500 – Rank 1000, would be better. This would still required time and effort in WvW to obtain, and be more, “Feasible” for newcomers to work towards.
Because in the end, isn’t one of the reason for these rewards, gear, back-item, to get more people into WvW? Is that not a good thing, I would think so.
This is exactly how I feel, When I logged on and saw the armor, I got all excited like wow I’m gonna go play wvw and I’m sure the reward will be reasonable to get like every other reward in the game. Then when I saw that it was rank 2k I felt a sinking feeling like really? Instead of wanting to play wvw and earn the reward i felt frustrated and repulsed about the entire game.
So before the new rewards you were not interested in WvW and now when some of the rewards are too difficult to get you are still not interested….
Sounds like everything works as intended. If you like WvW you will get the shiny eventually. If you don’t, you don’t.
Whats the point of new reward system if its time gated to the point its almost impossible to get for new player? As for old wvw players, like you said, if you really like wvw, then with or without reward doesn’t really matter. anet should just scrap the entire thing. wvw should just stay the same before the patch.
Newbies can get most of the rewards, with the exception of the Mistforged T3 armor. This armor is not for newbies, but for veterans. Newbies can become veterans (Once We (all) Were Noobs), and than they can get the T3 armor as well.
Why do veterans want it? (warning: long story from grandpa):
Back in the days rewards in WvW really sucked. There was no reward track, not much from drops and we had to pay for upgrading tower and keeps. To give and an idea: I farmed my own omnonberries and elder wood for siege in the regular maps. WvW-specific title requirements were so ridiculous that they were out of reach for allmost all. The only achievable title was “Veteran of the Mists” which we got from season one. If you look closely, you still see a lot of players with that title. Was it bad? No, it was glorious as WvW always is.
Nowadays everything is a lot better: there is a reward track, more drops, you can make 25 superior siege at once, there is a great update that brings lots of people to WvW and on top of that an exclusive armor. This really feels good.
In summary: do we need the T3 armor? No, but it is very welcome.
Lets look at the time required to get to rank 2000 compared to the time required to craft the gear yourself. WvWrs have been looking for a way to get their hands on Ascended armor/weapons, only to be given a means that far far exceeds what is expected in the PvErs world.

Agree with what many have said: Yes it will take a long time to get the max rewards, but if you focus on that, you are missing the point. WvW is fun in itself, and if you play for years you get years of fun, and now a shiny as well.
I admit there is some vanity: if I will see a player running around in full T3 armor its clear that he’s a full blown WvW player.
Nice to note that we (Far Shiverpeaks) have the highest Kill/Death ratio. This gives a bit of morale which we can use now we are sliding :/

Does anybody know the curren meta build for Dragonhunter in large scale WvW?
Metabattle only lists the old vanilla AH build and I couldn’t find anything on the various fora. Thx in advance!
Well, what to say…
- bad luck – do not walk under ladders these days
- drink less
- l2p
- at least you’re not losing pips anymore
On a slightly more serious note: obviously you are doing something wrong, and I would try to find out what it is. You can visit Metabattle for your build, check what killed you after you died, watch youtube videos to see gameplay, and maybe join a PvP guild to get advice and to learn.
Anyway, hats off for the dedication.
The person who wrote this Wiki entry … Really?
I created that article, but the builds are outdated now.
How terrible that the builds are outdated; people would only be able get 1,995 kills per hour.
Really, it’s of course not you who is responsible, but this degrades the Ultimate Dominator title from:
“I am bad-kitten , enemies killing, living, breathing World versus World warrior that fought day and night for my server”
to:
“I am a farmer that wants to spend 125 hours doing pointless stuff which helps no one just to flash a title which is supposed to mean the opposite”
I will have far more respect for a 2,500 yak’s Yakslapper, because I will know that he/she actually had to do the stuff in WvW to get the title.
(edited by Maureen Adaal.3412)
From my experience I have seen few blowout matches. Cases where one team gets less than 200 points happen seldom (really only a few) and close matches (> 400) are far more frequent. This is from a total of almost 150 ranked (only) matches.
Server titles is a nice idea. I would like to sport my FSP title, though I would tweak it a bit.
First, lets not speak of “honor points” to avoid a negative connotation with server transfers. There can be good reasons to transfer such as playing with friends, trying out other tiers, etc. Secondly, link it to doing stuff in WvW, like capuring keeps, towers, etc. Obviously no EOTM achievements. Make it tiered, and let people keep the rank they have reached so that they retain their heritage.
And about the titles: there are only a few WvW titles that are attainable by normal players. “Ultimate Dominator” may be attainable by a few, but titles like “Yakslapper” are next to impossible. Only the seasonal titles are/were achieveable, and they are the opposite, requiring almost no effort.
I like to show the “Veteran of the Mists” title, as a lot of others do, but a little bit more choice would not be too much.
Higher rewards than WvW is nothing new; Dungeons and EOTM also give more rewards than what you can get in WvW. It may sting a bit because SW is in some ways similar to WvW. I think you are are right tho that it is not ‘fair’.
To me it’s not a big problem, since I play WvW for fun. Sometimes when I need gold I do Dungeons for a few days, but it quicky feels like a grind to me. And remember: it used to be worse. Back in the days I had to farm my own omnomberries (no joke) to be able to have some decent food for WvW.
Luv this thead, hav many lol’s
Also even if we know for certain you are there to kill the grub and swear to behave we will still kill you. Its nothing personal, its just we were lead to believe you are concealing delicious bags and we want them.
And is it also important to educate new players about the dangers of being next to an enemy keep without backup
I would like to commend and give cookies to both the Arenanet dev and OP for making us all smile, because:
- The dev did put in this ridiculous requirement for a trait unlock that can also be bought for a few gold, and
- then someone actually wants to do it, and then
- complains on the WvW forum that it is hard
I mean ROFLMAO! Thank you both!
A bit more seriously, if you – or others – want to achieve anything in WvW, first realise that it is DANGEROUS. The NPC at Fort Mariner means it when he is saying “Who’s ready for a real fight? The kind that hardens your whiskers”. Most NPC’s talk in hyperbole, but this one is saying the truth.
It is also good to remember that in WvW red = dead, but greens are you friends. WvW is actually one of the most friendly and cooperative area’s in Tyria. If you want to get that achievement, you have to learn how wvw works. Try to work with your server, following the commander (the coloured dorito on the minimap). You can ask in mapchat to take te Grub when you are near. Of course this all works better if your server is actually blue.
And about the enemies that killed you at the Grub: Please do not hold it agains them. It is really not realistic to expect them to deduct that you actually wanted to kill the Grub.
Love Season 2 at the moment, please bring – after some suitable pause – Season 3.
To me Season 2 is great, because of the motivation on the server. People really play for the PPT, and you are never alone. Also our competing servers play hard and are tough as nails.
Nevertheless its good that the Season ends after this week, so that I can relax a bit and do some upleveling etc. and be ready for Season 3.
Hats off to the very persistent engineer from RoS this morning on FSP borderland. You made the capture of Briar and Heroes camp quite a challenge even though we outnumbered you.
All in all a very nice matchup and congrats to RoS and FR.
I am using this build now for about a month and especially the survivability is amazing (thank you Chris)!
For me I use this build with staff/sword + focus to get to 25 stacks of power, after which I switch to staff/hammer. To cut down on costs I use all cleric trinkets and three PVT Orr armor pieces, but otherwise its the same.
The most fun part of this build is that you can run through an enemy zerg and back without going down. Will keep using this for a long time.
It’s great that so many new people are now doing wvw, and I hope they stay when things get thougher.
I think I’ll do a bit more dungeoneering this week :-)
Congratulations to AM for the win. Alhtough I and others were occasionally engulft by a sea of red, it was fun and challenging most of the time, and we have learned a lot.
Had quite a lot of fun this morning on FSP borderland this morning. We were finally able to cap our Bay. After some time we managed Lake, but Briar was too tough to crack, due to good defence. Had some nice 1v1’s also. Thanks to both AG and MS for the fun fights.
come on FSP…I run alone towards 2 of you and their reaction is to WP? …I´m only a guardian with group fight build… >.<
We were just returning from taken Speldan, and our attempt on Anza had failed, so there was no point in staying, and we were not affraid of you; more the 15+ group behind you :-)
Both the healway build and the AH hammer build work well in WvW. Imho the following is imporant in WvW:
- stunbreakers (2)
- condition removal
- more emphasis on survival, so good health and toughness, or a lot of healing
One last thing is that your build should match the role you want to play.
An unusually fruitful weekend for Gandara. Was fun holding out FSP Bay for most of the early morning but alas, all the superior arrowcarts and balistas couldn’t hold off the inevitable Saturday morning borderland blobette. We had it coming though. .
Indeed fun fight at FSP bay. Initially we were with 6-7 by the way. In the hour or so that it took to treb outer, get the mortars and the treb inner (with four trebs at the end) some more came, so eventually we probably outnumbered you, but we did the work for it.
PS: used the word blob, go wash your mouth :-)
To OP: How do you know that WvW is more popular? I tried looking at the number of posters on the fora to estmate the lvl of activity, but i see no big differences there.
Until ArenaNet figures out a way to make money from WvW it will not change in any significant manner. WvW will always remain on the “back burner” and it will be a secondary (or tertiary) priority for ArenaNet.
Why does Anet not develop three new maps and sell these for 10 Euro. Its not unreasonably to ask money for new content, and I would buy these in an instant. The price / gametime (and/or fun factor) ratio would still be very good for many people.
Sorry if this messes up the chronology a bit, but this story needs to be told.
In Week 5 (2 – 9 February 2013) Far Shiverpeaks had just gained three places and moved to tier 5, together with Gunnar’s Hold and Miller’s Sound. Gunnar’s Hold had just received an influx of new guild(s) and was moving upwards at a very fast pace. One of these new guilds was [Xaoc], formerly part of Far Shiverpeaks, so we knew who we were facing.
In the early days of the match we were constantly nightcapped by [Xaoc] – and probably others – and Gunnar’s Hold gained on us sometimes 10k on one night. I remember sitting on a Sunday morning for four hours in EB, all the while losing towers and keeps to end up at a miserable score of 40 – some bickering between good teammates, etc. During the day we could make up a bit of ground but halfway during the week we were behind (I believe) with a solid 35 k on points.
Later we learned that part of [Xaoc] left GH during that time, so what happened afterwards is not all our own doing. Nevertheless, although many lost faith (me included), we somehow gained a bit in the final days of the match, and some belief came back. Extraordinary measures were taken – at least by my guild – in these last few days, culminating in a truly grand finale where we made up for all remaining points in the last evening.
Friday night we owned three quarters of all the maps. Everyone doing anything in GW2 got summoned to be in WvW and we managed to overtake GH and win by over 6k! The final score is attached. There are also some screenshots of people cheering, but sadly I could not find these – or the tale of the week by our resident bard Zephyer – anymore.
GH remained very sportsmanlike during the match and we received multiple contgratulations from their guild leaders afterwards. As I said, we were helped in part by some guilds leaving GH, but this match showed that FSP as a whole – even thought we are a PUG server – did not give up even thought it was really hopeless for much of the week.
The week after that we lost handily by Aurora Glade but it dit not matter much to many of us. We had shown what we are capable of and could confortably remain in t5.
If you have done everything but WvW than you will probably be able to hold your own on the battlefield. The easiest way to start is:
1) press B,
2) choose one of the maps, and watch for a blue “dorito” (commander sign) on the minimap. If there is none go to another borderland.
3) go to the commander, run with the zerg
4) watch the chat window. Most commanders communicate via chat.
Everything else becomes clear eventually. Have fun!
One of the – many – things I like in WvWvW is that it is so easy to get in to. I do not have too much time to play and need to be able to get in and get out at my one choosing. With WvWvW I just press “B”, pick a borderland and follow a fast moving green dot or seek out orange swords. Usually within minutes I am knee deep in the dead
From my observation siege is used liberally all over the map without too much regard for the costs. Just this morning we (from Far Shiverpeaks) where trebbing AM on QL from Stonemist castle with three trebs. Right after that we were trebbed from Durios by AM. Our solution was to build another treb, catapult and arrow cart next to Durios to kill there siege. This worked, and afterwards our siege also got wiped.
Bottom line is that WvW players appear not care too much about gold. If siege would be twice as cheap we would see twice as much siege and everybody would still be broke
