I Gave Up On This Game Am I Wrong?

I think you are wrong and here is why: it’s not like they hide any content behind any grinds. You can access any part of the game, and overtime you get rewarded for it with armor that gives you a slight bonus… it’s not something you’re forced to obtain to see certain parts of the game, thus its not a grind at all… it’s more of a reward or added bonus for playing..

Levelling from 1-80 is vertical progression, how come you’re OK with that? And don’t say you are referring only to endgame because Ascended is a stepping stone just like levelling is, neither are actual endgame content and you don’t even have to do Ascended there’s no real reason to it doesn’t actually benefit you in anyway.

I think you just like to complain.

What brings you down about gw2?

I think alot of passion went into this game’s development, moreso than any other MMO in recent years which just blatantly copies WoW and throws another franchise on it. You can tell by just how well detailed the world is in GW2, Anet really did alot right, however they made some very very big mistakes which cost them dearly.

The first is the shallow combat system. I just can’t play with so few skills without getting bored quickly, sorry but it takes more to engage me… This is something WoW did really well, giving you ~30+ spells that would all be useful in certain situations… and if you specced differently, you’d get completely new spells.. The 10-spells at a time we have here just don’t compare.. plus due to how the cooldowns are timed, once you perform your opening rotation you just find yourself pressing buttons as they light up… and as result of the limited combat system, the fights are all the same… it could have been much better…

I think they also made a huge mistake in not having any world PvP… there’s no excitement or element of danger out in the gameworld because I know that I’ll never die… they really should have made it so we can flag for PvP and fight other flagged players, they could have built alot onto that concept like adding a bounty system, GUILD WARS, etc…

I think the devs hearts were in the right place, they were trying something completely new, and as usually happens when you take chances like that some things worked, other things didn’t… They should be commended for what they did accomplish, which is more than any other MMO out so far post-WoW… the eternal battlegrounds for example is really brilliant…

How to attract more players

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MistaMike.7356

Something many analysts miss (especially those who aren’t gamers themselves) is that it doesn’t necessarily matter how good your game is – it also matters how good the current competition is. As MMOs evolve this genre is constantly changing, and players enjoy an MMO until they get bored, then jump to the next. All it takes is for your competitor to put out a bad patch to cause disenfranchised players to then leap over to your game.

A large group of players on release leveled to 80, and then left because there was no end-game. They will be back at some point to see what has been added, especially since GW2 is free to play. Right now you should be experiencing an increase in player logins, because of WoW’s 5.3 change to pvp as well as ToRs news for 2.2 that they are essentially going under.

With their content Blizzard is attempting to cast as wide a net as possible, attracting players with many minigames such as farming, pet battles, a new Barrens with live dynamic events, etc. What Anet should be doing right now is focus on adding minigames, and activities that deviate from what you already do ingame.

You guys are actually really good at creating minigames. The battle royale beta closing event was great, as were the holiday games, kegbrawl, crab chase, etc. You need more of these. And adding a leaderboard for each would encourage a competitive community to arise around each one, which further keeps people playing. The more different activities you can offer players, the higher your player retention rate will be.

Activities you don't know about

Why haven’t they added these yet? This should be a high priority. And add leaderboards for each minigame, so you have competitive communities spring up around each one.

If this is true and there are now RNG boxes on sale I’m very disappointed. This is what crappy games like SWTOR have to pull on their audience because they have no confidence in the quality of their game to attract customers. GW2 is too good for crap like this, you are cheapening your name in exchange for a few quick bucks. Very disappointed because I thought you knew better.

It isn’t even more hard content, they just need more content period. I really hope they add more competitive mini-games, and have a leaderboard for each one. Keg brawls and the crabby game are great, but they need more stuff like that!!

The thing is I know these developers understand mini-games, they make them as one-offs like the end-of-beta events and the holiday events/puzzle box… I really hope they add more to the game that will be permanent and feature a leaderboard, so that a competitive community arises around each one… That is what will distinguish this game more than anything else I feel…

Explain one thing to me first: What do you need a raid for? What mechanics require more than 5 players?

None right now… that’s the point, the game could use some.

And if they do, do they really add to the gameplay and wherein lies the difference for the individual player?

Absolutely, it would be great to have some new mechanics other than tank/spank. Use your imagination!

Raids only stick out at provide almost not challenge for the majority of the players. In most raid only 3-5 people really have an important job and have to deal with what the game is throwing at them while the rest of the raid just has to not suck at playing the game.

I don’t know what raids you’ve played but I’ve seen raids where every player must be on their game or it’s a wipe. And either way, who cares if the raid is easy or hard? It’s something to do, and nothing in this game is required so if you don’t like it DON’T DO IT!

Why Do Most GW2 Players Hate Hard Content?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MistaMike.7356

MistaMike.7356

I would love content like this. Especially if I wasn’t able to beat it, so I’d have to go elsewhere and try strengthening my character before coming back to try again. It gives you more reason to play, to finally find out what’s behind that door… when you’re able to open every door and see what’s behind them all with relative ease we lose motivation to play. I love the idea that there is content out there I will never see, it makes the game world seem so much larger. This is something Bethesda understood very well when they made Morrowind, I think Anet understands it as well with regards to exploration but not with increasing difficulty as a gating mechanism.

I had this exact same problem when playing a Warrior, I chose that profession since it had the most weapons (and therefor the most different combat skills), but combat still quickly became very repetitive and boring. I left the game after hitting 80 and rerolling several other professions, all with the same problem.

I recently came back and rerolled a thief, and just recently hit 80. The combat is actually fun, I mostly dual-wield pistol, dual-wield dagger for multiple enemies in close proximity, and use the short-bow for attacking castles in WvW…

Anet could make things MUCH more diverse if they gave weapons like 7-8 different skills each and then allowed us to customize our 1-5 buttons the same way they allow us to customize 7-10… It would be alot of work to balance but I really hope they do this (or have some other plan for addressing this issue).

Someone to hate.

MistaMike.7356

- All of this probably feels very familiar to many of you. Except soon after the bulk of our members started to get bored – primarily because there wasn’t anything left for them to “continue progressing” their character. Sure some leveled alts but most of us are hardcore players and like to dedicate to one charatcer. Others continued to focus on WvW but even that didn’t provide any rewards that made their characters better. A fewer number completed their legendaries and today there’s only a handful left playing GW2. Sure theres the notion of playig the game because its fun. And GW2 is that, it is fun. But many of us need to feel like we are accomplishing something. Call it vanity too, but we also want to feel and look special…and Gw’s lack of gear progression makes us sad.

The big issue with gear progression lies in that sentence. You can only feel special by making the vast majority of people feel bad when they see you. People don’t play games to feel bad.

What? That’s not what he said at all. If you feel bad looking at somebody who has something that you don’t want to take the time to earn yourself, that says alot more about you than him. Why don’t you worry about yourself and not about what other people have.

For the amount of blood and sweat invested in this project so far, I think they would be crazy not continuing it. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you can’t expect to achieve WoW status overnight. They have sold very very well for an MMO post-wow, they must still be working on the game.

Mob spawn - popping into existence is jarring

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MistaMike.7356

MistaMike.7356

Love the game, but one thing I’ve notice is that it’s really jarring having mobs pop in and out of existence, and I’ve seen other MMOs handle this more effectively – you could make this much better by attaching an animation script to each mob when they spawn that slowly increases their alpha level (so they fade into existence) rather than just appearing out of nowhere.
Similarly you can do the reverse when they die and are looted, so they fade out of existence. There is such meticulous effort paid to the environment and art in this game, and I think having mobs fade in/out just looks better and is what many players are used to.
Just a suggestion – keep up the excellent work!

Experiencing the World

WoW definitely has more of a focus on lore than Guild Wars 2.

GW2 seems to have been designed with the sort of people who don’t care about lore in mind.

No quest dialogue boxes to skip through. You can just run to the circles on your map, kill mobs and interact with objects within the circle until you’re told the Heart quest has been completed or the event is over, and move on to the next circled area on your map. Repeat until you hit level 80.

The good thing about GW2 is that it has no sub fee, so I can play both WoW and GW2 at once. WoW is where I go for engaging stories and teamwork, whereas GW2 for me is where I go when I feel like zerging around a map doing events and observing the chaos.

You guys can’t be serious… Do you ever talk to NPCs? You do know that if you talk to Heart NPCs before you do their event, they will tell you what they want done and why?

There is so much lore in this game in every nook and cranny, you need to explore more. Arenanet didn’t force it because they know many players have the attention span of a gnat, but the lore is there if you look.

Yeah it’s a goal you put on yourself. But you’ll never be on par with those who grind. I thought the whole point was to keep this from happening. To allow the same access to things as everyone else. To have the only progression horizontal, and armors to be valuable for cosmetics. Playing more should make you more knowledgable and skilled at the game, not have better stats.

Now, you can’t play casually to be on par with others. It will make some casual players turn to hardcore gamers, because they do want to have the same stats. I can see that some people don’t care about it, but some people do. You can say it’s because they want top stats, but they don’t really want to spend the time.

This game was supposed to allow people to have top stats without having to spend all the time getting there. Having top stats gives you that sense that your character is maxed and that your skill will determine the outcome. Not anymore. Now time determines the outcome when you want to do the dungeons instead of the fun and skill factor.

You’re playing a game with 80 levels… this game has had vertical progression from DAY ONE. Yet you ignore that fact don’t you.

Why not just build new zones/regions that scale in difficulty. So if you want to see them, you better learn how to play your character well. I really think they need to make PvE fights more interesting than just tank/spank while dodging the red circle… They could learn alot from Blizzard with regards to making interesting PvE fights.. And then just set up a few raids or regions, put some achievements/pets/mounts at the end of them, and there’s your incentive without having to add new gear. Or they could even give you the ability to customize your 1-5 buttons, and hide those each somewhere out in the world…

This is for all the people who claim the game is dying.

Star Wars The Old Republic ended up laying off a significant portion of their staff six months or so after launch. TSW ended up laying off a third of their staff, due to disappointing sales.

Anet, on the other hand, is hiring. Here’s the link to their website, which I got by following the shifting news on top of the main Guild Wars 2 page.

http://www.arena.net/

If Guild Wars 2 is doing so badly and the game is dying, why is Anet hiring?

SWTOR shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same post as GW2, much less the same sentence. Look around at all the creativity, detail and passion that went into this game. The developers here care and are very proud of their product.
Now look at the buggy piece of garbage that is SWTOR, where the development is outsourced to third-world countries that don’t even know what Star Wars is.
One is a game made by gamers, the other a game made by suits, business and marketing majors.

Why do we need more ways you dont like WvWvW or sPvP just wondering.

Because the world gets dull when you can never die. I don’t know if you’ve ever played a game with world PvP before but it makes the game far more interesting. You need to anticipate getting attacked at all times and consequently your actions require some thought to plan out. Fighting with your back against a wall for example to ensure nobody comes up behind you, timing your pulls so that you don’t get overrun if an enemy is close by.

Currently the world doesn’t require a modicum of thought when you can steamroll over everything. It’s an absolute gorgeous landscape but there is zero element of danger and for an adventure game you want that element.

FotM killed Gw2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MistaMike.7356

MistaMike.7356

I am quite new to the game, highest level is 36, what is FotM? and how is it killing the game?

“FotM” stands for “Flavour of the Month” or “Fractals of the Mists” depending on how cynical you are. The reason it’s killing the game is that the entrance is in Lion’s Arch which means that, at the moment, the bulk of server population is sitting in LA looking for fractal groups, rather than being spread around the world participating in events. To be honest I, like others, think this is a temporary thing and that it’s only killing the game at the moment and things will get back to normal in a relatively short period of time.

However what looks like it may do more serious damage to the game is the introduction of new gear tiers to the game. Legendary items were initially the same power levels as Exotics, the only reason to obtain them was for cosmetic and bragging rights. Now they have raised the power level of Legendary items and created a new level of item, Ascended, at a level between Exotic and Legendary. Although I’m sure their intentions were good, what they’ve done here is to create what is called a “gear treadmill” where in order to compete with top-level content you need to have the top-level gear. Even before this there were stories of servers where some PuGs (pick up groups) for dungeons would require members to be fully equipped in exotic gear; with the introduction of Ascended and the power increase of Legendary items, it is possible that this trend will spread and become worse.

Oh No!
A PUG might require Ascended gear of its members! How terrible!

If you don’t like it, you can always start your own PUG. Oh but that would be too much work wouldn’t it. You’d rather piggyback on someone else putting together the group. You want to join someone else’s pug, then don’t get upset when they make the rules.
