The experience of being in a WvW guild on a non-host server is not as bad as you might think. Some non-Host servers have their own distinct community and identity (especially those currently listed as “Very High”). I suggest you and your guild seek to join one of those communities rather than pursue joining a “Full” Host Server.

Linking depends on concept of stable activity to predict the future activity. Such unpredictable burst of population is outside the scope of the predictability.

Bursts in population are in the scope of predictability, as certain spikes have been recorded and their effect on populations also recorded. Remember when the new WvW rewards came out? All maps were queued for weeks, until populations slowly died down. You can argue it was due to the nature of the rewards, but I believe queues and inability to play frustrated people and lead to decline.

This upcoming beta weekend will also show you another example of a population spike.

As a system based on server linking, Tier 5 can be phased in and phased out every two months. If it’s as horrible as you make it out to be, it can be tried, tested and phased out as many other changes to WvW have and will be.

Might I add: It’s obvious ArenaNet’s infastructure is not designed to handle 3 map blobs going at it. We’re getting extreme lag in Tier 4 during peak hours in a matchup with your server, HoD. Spreading out populations further will also improve the lag issue currently affecting players.

Namer.9750:

NA shouldn’t have a Tier 5 just because “EU also does”, and frankly, most T3/T4 servers queue 1-2 maps or so during NA primetime. These servers can sustain a spike in population. The servers that will feel overcrowded are the ones who already are, in T1 and T2, with dead links and most of the strength on the Host server. If there are queues for long enough, then population will slide down. You can have up to 5000+ players playing WvW simultaneously across all servers and tiers. We don’t hit near that capacity currently and we won’t except for maybe a couple weeks into the xpack.

Population spikes are irrelevant to the long term health of WvW, and 5 Tiers for NA is detrimental to the long term. Having 4 tiers with up to 3 servers linked together, does help provide OCX/SEA populations for all these servers (even if as small as 20 peeps on a good day, still better than fully dead).

Consider the current situation, where Fort Aspenwood has Devona’s Rest linked to it. By your proposal, you’d unlink DR from FA and link DR to a smaller server, say, Crystal Desert or Northern Shiverpeaks or something.

However, neither DR nor CD has a native OCX population. FA does, EBay does. An OCX player on DR or CD right now can get action and other people to play with without getting ktrained all day by servers like SoS or HoD, but under your proposal they would have a far greater chance of ending up with a server and timezone that’s completely dead.

You can’t think of just NA primetime when you consider linking and tiering NA servers. NA is not EU with one timezone. As of now, even with 4 tiers you see OCX or SEA action mainly in 2-3 tiers, and the people on the tiers without action come here and complain about “too many tiers, we need 3 tiers” etc. etc.

If necessary, Tier 5 can be implemented during a linking and taken out at the next linking. I’m not advocating for Tier 5 “because EU has it”. I’m explaining that in another context, Tier 5 has worked. Add back Tier 5 and judge its effectiveness through queues, matchup disparity and population disparity… if there’s an improvement to these areas, keep 5 tiers. If not, remove Tier 5 at the next server linking by linking servers into 4 tiers. Easy.

Why Should We Add Back Tier 5?

With the upcoming release of Path of Fire, WvW populations are expected to skyrocket. Although queues are positive in that they represent an active WvW population, they are negative in that they can lead to burnout and an eventual decrease in active WvW population. An extra WvW tier will spread out population, reduce queues and improve matchup balance.

Plus, EU already has a fifth WvW tier. The concept has already been implemented for two years in another region, and proven successful.

How can Tier 5 be implemented?

In another thread, I read a great suggestion as to how to implement Tier 5:

hunterAS.5107:

Remove all server links from T1 and T2 servers (6 servers no longer have links)
Add in a fifth tier (This will help to alleviate the bandwagoning individuals and queues)
Everyone from T3 on down would have 1 matched server.

This process would be done during the upcoming server re-linking at the end of August.

Using Tier 5 to Balance Server Populations:

The servers in Tier 5 may be High or Very High rather than Full, offering a place for guilds from overstacked servers to relocate. Once those Very High or High Tier 5 servers enter Tier 4 or Tier 3 and are competitive, they would be placed in Full to prevent bandwagoning unless population disparities are still a problem for that server.

Also, if a Full server enters T5, it would not be unlocked unless its population was Very High or High. This prevents servers from gaming the system to be open for transfers.

This would allow population to be slowly relocated from the most powerful servers to the less powerful ones, improving matchup balance.

EDIT: Using Tier 5 to Reduce Lag

A Tier 5 match-up can also be manually affected to reduce map capacity on different WvW maps, thus decreasing the size of map blobs and improving the lag issue for players. And, it offers a competitive scene where smaller guild groups, havoc groups and roamers play a larger role.

Benefits:

• Reduces queues
• Helps balance matchups
• Works hand in hand with the 1Up 1Down system.
• EDIT: Can be altered by reducing map capacity to reduce lag for players and offer a less blobby WvW environment.

The goal of making rewards active rather than passive is a good one to strive for, but I think the difficulties with implementation are why the passive system was originally chosen for reward tracks and followed for the pip system . . .

The most notable issues I see with the system in the op on a first reading . . :

1) It’s giving out way way way too many pips. Zerglings who individually contribute very little to their server would be done with the entire track by the end of prime time on reset night lol . . .

2) It further encourages blobbing/training, as already mentioned. But not just on offense any more, now the entire server is going to want to be there for that 80th yak on every keep . . .

3) It eliminates the loyalty bonus, and as minor as that bonus is it’s also the system currently in place to discourage jumping servers at every matchup . . .

And like I said that’s just on the first glance. There are good things about the idea as well, and like I said the goal of rewarding active, productive participation rather than just ‘being there’ is a good one too. But I don’t think there is any practical way to accomplish that goal . . .

1) As stated previously, number of pips received can be toned down to an appropriate level. I’ll attempt to do that.

2) Good point. There can be a restriction such as “You only get the reward for fortifying a keep (80 yaks) if you have escorted 20 yaks”.

3) The loyalty bonus can be brought back or other inhibitors put into place to reward server loyalty and discourage jumping servers.

One solution for your critique is reducing the number of pips earned for capture events and increasing the number of pips earned for defending, upgrading and running yaks.

This would incentivize more people to defend objectives, thus making it more difficult for groups to karma train. Keep in mind that the “defend” rewards are only earned if the objective remains under your control.

Hi all,
I wanted to introduce a potential change to the way pips are acquired in World V. World, adjusting pip acquisition from a passive process to an active one. Please take a look and let me know what you think.

Pips are now acquired as follows:

Capturing enemy objectives:
The player stands in a cap circle while an objective is capped.

Sentry/Shrine: 0 pips
Camp: 1 pip
Tower: 2 pips
Keep: 3 pips

Defending objectives:
A “Defend an objective” event is successfully completed while a player is in that objective’s “territory” (as outlined from new gliding changes)

Camps/Towers/Keeps: 2 pips per successful Defense Event

Note: Tier of the objective does not affect the bonus acquired.

Battling NPC mercenaries:
The player completes events related to NPC mercenary areas in Eternal Battlegrounds.

Converting NPC Areas to your side: 2 pips
Reverting an enemy NPC area to Neutral: 2 pips

Upgrading objectives:
The player is in the territory of a camp, tower or keep when it upgrades.

Condition: The player has escorted at least a quarter of the yaks required to upgrade that objective.
Camp T1: 2 pips, T2: 3 pips, T3: 4 pips
Tower T1: 3 pips, T2: 4 pips, T3: 5 pips
Keep T1: 4 pips, T2: 5 pips, T3: 6 pips
Successfully completing an “Escort Yak” event: 1 pip

Defeating enemy players
The following conditions are met while a player of an opposing server is in the same territory.

A Commander is defeated: 2 pips

A lieutenant/shared participatant is defeated: 1 pip

Note: For this to work, a commander would be restricted in how many lieutenants he or she can appoint. Preferably 1 for every 5 members.

Changes to Pip Acquisition Bonuses:

Commander Bonus: Removed.
Wood Tier Completed from previous Week: Removed.
Outnumbered: Capturing objectives will now yield +1 pips. Defending objectives will now yield +1 pips.
Skirmish Bonus: + 1 pip to each acquisition if your team won the last skirmish.
Rank Bonuses: Removed.
Server Loyalty Bonus:
+1 pip if you have remained on the same server for 3 months.
+2 pip if you have remained on the same server for 6 months.
+3 pips if you have remained on the same server for 9 months.

Note: All the above values can be adjusted to balance out rewards.

Change Log
• Bonuses for capturing objectives of higher tier has been removed.
• Number of pips for taking a keep and upgrading objectives have been reduced.
• Removed bonuses for WvW rank and instead added bonuses for server loyalty.
• Added “Defeating enemy players” rewards.
• Added a condition for receiving the “Upgrading objective” reward.

Summary
• This system balances out a passive rewards system (Reward tracks) with an active one (Skirmish chests) instead of two passive reward systems.

• You are rewarded for what YOU accomplish in WvW, not what your server/team accomplishes as a whole. Losing a matchup or population disparity between servers does not affect the rewards you, your squad or guild group receives.

• You are rewarded on your time, not on a set interval (every 5 minutes). The reward track system may still follow a set interval.

• This system does not factor in “participation”. You earn the same number of pips for capturing an objective if you have T0 participation or T6 participation. You can jump into WvW, port back for a quick break, and take another objective without having your rewards diminished.

• Players are rewarded regardless of what they do in WvW: zerg, roam, defend objectives, or escort yaks. Each aspect of WvW is valuable and should be rewarded.

Gate of Madness is very much alive. Our guilds have spent a great deal of time and energy keeping our server community alive and thriving. I don’t want to see Gate of Madness (as a group/Server/community) removed from the game. In some capacity, original server identity needs to stay.

If you want to better balance stats, I’d suggest scaling all gear stats to exotic level. For example, my Rare gear and Ascended gear would have the same stats while in WvW. However, there would still be some disparity. Ascended armor can equip superior runes and infusions, while rare armor can only equip major runes. This might help to counteract some powercreep, and give WvW players the opportunity to try out more stat combinations at a reasonable price.

Otherwise, keep things the way they are.

GoM was the most toxic community Crystal Desert was ever linked with. That said, much of it was likely due to [vX] who provided quite the commentary on the Axis powers and what they should have done to people of Jewish decent, and other fairly horrid things to spam /team.

Pretty bad. Some of them even got a 48 hour ban…

Longtime GoM veteran here. I don’t remember ever seeing the [vX] tag on GoM, and if they were on the server on the past, they transferred to another server or don’t play currently.

Gate of Madness is a great place to be. Awesome community and a great environment. I heartily recommend giving us a try.

suggestion from someone else in another thread was to add a 5th tier and give 3 more servers “host” status. That might help distribute populations better and get some of the marginally “full” servers off the bubble.

I think Linking has helped the situation but we can take it one step further…

Remove all server links from T1 and T2 servers (6 servers no longer have links)
Add in a fifth tier (This will help to alleviate the bandwagoning individuals and queues)
Everyone from T3 on down would have 1 matched server.

^ This. As someone from a server (Gate of Madness) who would likely be placed in T5, I would be completely fine with this compromise.

I’m all for mounts in PvE. Please keep them out of WvW.

Why focus on defending our Garrison versus controlling the enemy Garrison? The answer: Waypoints. Because we have a waypoint (Citadel) near our garrison, it’s much easier to run down a short ways to defend Garrison than trudge halfway across the map to defend/control the enemy Garrison.

I’ve always liked the Warrior/Berserker… very fun in open world PvE. Keep in mind that the class has been nerfed and is sub-optimal in raids, fractals and sPvP.

I think this would be an interesting addition to raiding in GW2.
