All this arguing and vitriol between PvE and PvP is the same record Anet played during GW1. It took them years and the departure of most of the original PvP community before they listed then.

I don’t understand why they are once again trying an already failed idea and bashing their heads against it. Eventually they will concede to the obvious, but once again it is just far too late.

No new content till expansion?

Anet did not all of sudden decide to make an expansion just because some people complain. That’s really not how this stuff works.

If anything the reason they are switching to an expac is probably because NCSoft needed an increase in revenue for stocks.

Excuse me, but they say otherwise and have said so in various interviews. That’s exactly how it worked.

You don’t believe me, do you? Six-minute mark. Hear it for yourself.

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I was talking to someone who believes marketing speak.

Who cares if some angry random schmuck complains for a day? The angry minority on your forum should not decide how you run your game.

Unless you want to run it into the ground.

A day? Are you new to the forums or something? The point is that angry minority got their expansion. They did decide how to run the game. Hello? That’s kind of the point of this thread.

No new content because the expansion is taking all the resources. And that’s something we said would happen. But the expansion crowd didn’t care. They wanted their expansion.

And here we are.

The question is . . . why? Every time they add even a minor bit of small content, the forums ignite with complaints. Hello? Look at what happened with April Fool’s.

It such a lose/lose situation for ANet. kitten ed if you do and kitten ed if you don’t.

No, this is not true. Most games release content patches in between Expansion releases.

That’s what I said.

We’re past the last content patch (the end of season 2) now, and in the drought to the next expansion release. Come the expansion we get a slew of new content, followed by a few patches with smaller content releases again (in this case, the HoT LS), and then if the concept is successful we’ll get another long drought to the next expansion.

Which is not unlike, say, WoW, at all. Only the during-expansion content patches are smaller but more frequent due to the nature of LS. But the general layout is the same.

I guess I’ve been playing too many games with actual content patches to consider a living story release one of them.

Hopefully it doesn’t return.

Also I’m not sure you’ll want to emulate WoW’s content drought methods. FF14 will only have had about 2 months with no content patch until the expansion. If HoT releases in… let’s be generous and say August, that’s what, 8 months?

Neb.4170

But fact is that we did not get ANY new content since wintersday.

Yes, this is exactly how “classical” MMO development works. After the last patch of an expansion you have a huge gap until the next expansion releases.

This is entirely normal and exactly what people hopefully knew they were crying for when they flooded the forums with the barrages of “Stop LS! Give me expansions!”.

And now ANet is delivering. Expansion sounds awesome, but assuming it works out and is successful, just be aware that the days of relatively frequent smaller content additions are most likely over.

No, this is not true. Most games release content patches in between Expansion releases.

Eh… allow me to explain.
Living World = relatively regular content updates
Expansion = In time large expansion addition

You can’t really have it both ways without one or the other having to suffer in terms of quality

Creating an expansion doesn’t mean that you don’t do small content patches before expansions. This idea that Anet can’t release anything while working an expac is nonsense.

Look at FF14.

Balancing issues won’t go away whether or not new classes are added. That’s not really a good reason to not add things.

Of course it is a good reason. The more things are added (whether in the form of new weapons or skills or traits or classes), the bigger the issues become. Just because there are balance issues now and just because there will always be balance issues doesn’t mean that the issues can not become bigger.

So you’re saying it’s better to not add anything because it may get worse? Let’s just stick with the tired, unbalanced mess we have now.

That’s a wonderfully pessimistic outlook. I’ll pass on that.

just replying to correct one thing; i am sure that MOST people feel displeasure for how the game is implementing content….especially how its NOT implementing content on very crucial aspects of the game, including PVP.

As far as PvP players go, I can see why a majority might be disaffected. I might argue the assertion of “most players” as far as PvE goes. My point (re PvE play) was that the tinkerers and theory crafters are more likely to feel ignored than story lovers, or even treasure hunters.

As someone who enjoys lore in/outside/around games I really dislike living story. It is the daytime soap opera equivalent of a story.

I don’t understand… the 1st revamp of the daily had too few choices, so the 2nd revamp of the daily added more choices, now the 3rd revamp of the daily removed those choices…

First off… Why do you keep wasting development time revamping the daily? this is literally the 4th iteration of it.

Secondly… why are we reverting to having no choices? that was what you tried to solve with the last revamp…

Sometimes it feels like Anet is 2 factions duking it out over the direction of the game.

This is one of those occasions. The changes to the daily seem schizophrenic compared to the last changes.

Question About Metrics

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Neb.4170

Neb.4170

A few months ago, a Lotro dev who left the company (and thus could no longer be gagged) said that not only did less than 10% of the Lotro population raid, but less than 10% of the population raided since the game launched. He also said that forum posts by that group made up 50% of the posts.

This isn’t just Anet pulling numbers out of the air. First of all, more people solo in MMOs than most of us would like to believe. And those people tend not to do dungeons at all and none of them would care about dungeons unless they made a solo version.

I am not sure if you meant to conflate raiding and dungeons but they are extremely different beasts. Raids require large amount of people, coordination and communication. Dungeons are nowhere near the same.

TBH, I don’t see how there’s an argument based on “Rangers are a pet class!!!!” to argue against putting it in since I can put my pet on passive and have it not do anything as well. Clearly my pet is not an unavoidable and necessary aspect to my class.

It’s not so much an argument as it that is just what ArenaNet wants.

They want the ranger to be a pet class and have said, flat out, that it will stay that way.

Sucks, but it is what it is.

So how is the game doing?

I thought Anet’s idea of no dedicated roles was preety cool at first but now I see it makes you feel like your character is decent at everything, but good at nothing.

Unfortunately you have only one goal in this game, regardless of your class choice. Do damage. You can make a ‘support’ build, but you’ll just be a hindrance, especially so if you plan on doing any dungeon content.

Also don’t roll necro if you plan on doing dungeons/fractals.

@Vayne, have you ever heard of ignoring people? You should try it out. For all of our sakes.

Thanks for the posts, and really guys there is no need to argue you both brought up good points. As for what made me quit in the first place, it wasn’t the PvP or PvE, I had fun with both it was just that I could not find a profession that clicked with me. I tried them all, but I just couldn’t find the one that made me say “Hell yeah, this is my toon right here.” With WoW’s new expac though it feels like they gutted and changed the classes there way to much to the point where characters I have loved for years do not even feel the same anymore, so I figured now was a good a time as any to give GW a second chance.

I have the same issue with the game. Leveled up every class, don’t like any of them. I come back every so often to see if the professions have been changed and/or new ones have been added.

No luck yet.

This isn’t specific to the changes being made this run, but it does tie into the changes. I believe Anet needs to take a very hard look at the stat bonuses tied to trait lines. For many classes these are very haphazard, or they appear to be at the very least.

This may have been done intentionally, to promote hybrid builds and try to prevent overspecialization, however it hasn’t had that effect at all. People will always specialize, because specializing will almost always give better payout. Most of the classes that are viewed as ‘better’ and/or ‘More complete’ have trait lines that function with the stats given. The classes that are generally viewed poorly have trait lines that do not mesh with the stats given.

Examples:

Ranger
-traps (Which are all about conditions) are linked to a trait line (Skirmishing) that gives zero bonus to Conditions in anyway possible.
-Bows require an extremely high amount of traits to become ‘maxed’, most weapons for other classes only require a single traitline. Long bows require 70 traits and even then you are forced to sacrifice some because of poor placement.

Necro
- Soul Reaping is a defensive traitline tied to Critical Damage. This has been rectified slightly by giving us Deathly perception, however I still think the defensive trait being tied to these crit bonuses is very poorly thought out.

Engineer
- Same problem as the necro. Crit damage is tied to a traitline that gives defensive ‘Toolbelt’ tricks and modifications.

Now, for an opposite example lets take the Warrior.

Their crit damage tree, while not tied to a strait power/precision tree is tied to burst damage recharge. Obviously this meshes well with Crit damage. This is a good example of a tree that while not based on pure stats, does work well within itself.

I do hope that Anet takes a more ‘thorough’ look at these trees. Small skill changes aren’t really what people are looking for anymore. We’ve had a year of small changes that really haven’t fixed the basic problem.

Collaborative Development Topic- Living World

in CDI

Posted by: Neb.4170

One of the biggest driving concepts of the ‘living world’ was to viscerally feel and see the changes in the world. I feel that this concept has really fell far from the intended goal. Each update feels very ephemeral and very little changes actually make any impact whatsoever.

This, coupled with the ’Filler’* type bosses/enemies we have seen makes these updates just feel like pointless fluff with an associated checklist of random achievements. I do not feel like the story has gone anywhere since Zhaitan was killed. This is after an entire year has passed in real time. We’ve seen no changes in Orr, no changes to the world from his demise, nothing. Zombies continue to spawn, Orr is still a wasteland, nothing. The ‘living’ world hasn’t changed at all. The ‘living’ story hasn’t made any impact on the world.

We’ve had zero progress in ‘explorable’ areas since the original Karkaland debut. That was quite a while ago and even that was pointless filler.

**Read: Filler, no real impact on the main driving story. Dragons.
