What are you using for food and wrenches?

Thank-you, I’m happy the post helps.

I use Mango Pie and the +power Sharpening Stone. I’m often thinking of what food to best use, and come to Mango Pie each time.

My build is less regular, and you can find it (pretty much) here

  • Nelly the Ele (things I do)

I’m twitchy, liking to move a lot to stay frosty and guildies can expect to see me cast randomly as I warm up (bit odd, eh?). Nothing beats going into a controlled environment like the Mist’s practice area to shoot at golems and practice, practice, practice. Excellent to help develop cool-down time ‘mind-counting’. I often work on one thing at a time, which could be DPS or CC or scouting etc. For example, perhaps with an addition of elementalists in your guild recently, you can call fields less often to concentrate on other areas to practice, such as map and chat watching.

I use simple party portraits, a small UI and map to remove clutter from the viewing area. An FPS monitor indicates to me large, yet unseen groups.

The inventory is setup to stack the common loot bags and salvage scraps (I open and salvage them with magic find boons after hundreds of stacks). Blueprints, kits and tools, weapons and nourishments are grouped for easy access, and hidden from the sell window. At the seller NPC I hit ‘sell trash’ and can spam-click the rest comfortably, quickly, meaning I’m spending more time ready for my team.

The ‘run’ key helps me check the map, my inventory or type messages whilst continuing to move forward with the group. This and the ‘flip-view’ camera are mapped to easy to hit keys, along with the video record function.

I have a mute button assigned to the mouse, and use voice activated comms. I don’t want to press a button to talk whilst micromanaging everything else – this can lead to intervals between an event happening and myself voicing it (as I fend off an adversary for example) and cause choppiness when things are heated.

All functions are mapped, using a Wolkitteng keypad.

Surround sound headphones give positional awareness for things happening that are not in view.

Learnt this one from an AN developer: I have a potion to disguise my avatar with the intention of fooling enemies. Quite nice to enter a door or retreat. Unfortunately as an elementalist, our attunement ‘boon’ shows (among others).

I use Magnetic Aura to reflect projectiles incoming on allies by positioning myself between them and the opposition. The best way in using this is to stand directly in front of the enemy as your defended player will likely move too much.

Blink away from the enemy when casting Meteor Shower; blink into them when casting Tornado. Learn the variety of blink spots around the WvW maps.

I often swap out for Ride the Lightning and Rock Barrier. I use the Bloodlust sigil to stack power and switch out to another staff that has the Battle sigil (or Fire). It’s worth knowing that the Battle sigil trumps Bloodlust every time you are presented with an important (GvG) fight, and if I have the presence of mind to switch over, I will.

I like to charge Lightning Surge as my group veils in. Lovely damage and blind. Holding a second for a triple damage number from Air 1 before switching out when desired.

MS >> Tornado. Perfect timing = best damage output. Throw in Lava Font before transforming and leave Tornado early as Meteor Showers ends, for maximum DPS as you return to the Fire attunement.

Hope this is useful to people and that others can add advice below. I certainly have loads to learn and look forward to doing so.

  • Dealing Damage

Adding DPS to a push through is one of the trickier areas, as skills that do DPS take time to cast or take effect, leaving them hitting nothing as the opposition moves. Just like the melee ball, your number one, the auto attack, is the best sustainable damage in these situations. Chain Lightning, or Fireball + Lava Font are reliable and add the numbers that the team are looking for. On a push, select a warrior (or guardian) in their front line and click to attack. Concentrate on keeping them selected (impossible without ground targeting). It’s not easy as the click-movement system in the game is iffy and lacking returnable targets (function is broken), but there you will have the group aimed upon. If you can find their raid leader, then perfect.

  • Enemy Buff Awareness

Stability! Recall that target you selected right before a push? Well they are going to aid in telling you when the enemy melee ball have stability up or not. They don’t? Static Field joy could be had. They do? Frozen Ground as they attempt retreat. Note that a Shockwave can be blocked by the first target it hits, and consequently not activate the immobilisation on anything else thereafter.

  • Rotations

Every guild, zerg, location, team group composition and advantage/disadvantage etc are so diverse that a genuine rotation (think circle) is a ridiculous practice – everything dynamically alters. However there can be frequent use of combinations (think line). There are quite a few skill chains and they should be easy enough to figure out for yourselves. Here’s a healing one that is very powerful (taken from my time holding nodes in sPVP – break it down for WvW groups):

Earth > E2 > Water (cleanse) > W3 covering the E2 > Arcane Wave (blast) > Heal-6 > dodge (EA cleanse) > Healing Rain > Earth > E2 > dodge (EA blast) > (wait or longer wait) > E2 > Water (cleanse) > W3 covering the E2 > (Arcane Wave if used longer wait) dodge (EA cleanse) > Heal-6.

A fighting retreat one:

(place in retreating line) Air > A5 > Fire > F5 > Earth > E5 > E4 > Water > W2 > W4 > W2

  • Slow down and be useful

Elementalist are notorious for speedily activating abilities and switching attunements. Getting the most out of cool-downs is an efficient way to support; spamming them without reaction is not. Don’t pile every AoE in one place all of the time (although certainly do some of the time as quite often these are the most fun times). Attempt to be mindful, actively predicting group movements and blocking their exits or drive.

The Water Attunement is an excellent one to linger in. With soothing mists ticking, options available to heals and the big beauty of Ice Spike. Ice Spike’s cool-down is so low, the damage high and the radius large, that helping to finish the downed is comfortable in this attunement.

  • Mobility

Mobility is essential in battles, which is why Frozen Ground is often favourable. You can forfeit lots of solo damage and increase the damage of the team by denying the opposition mobility. Frozen Ground last longer than Static Field, has a wider area, refreshes each second, adds 10% damage reduction to allies through blasting, chilled through projectiles, affects (potentially much) larger numbers, and ignores STABILITY. It also helps to alleviate attunement swapping CDs from bringing forward water in a ‘rotation’.

Static Fields are devastating versus the disorganized, but versus good groups, stability will be abundant at the start of battle. You may find Frozen Ground, Unsteady Ground, and Shockwave to be more reliable openers. Static Field is then available later. Remember variables – TAB-target a handful of the opposition’s blob to seek a stability boon is present or not.

For alternatives to team use of stability, think about your good condition removal that can be applied throughout movement in a battle – Windbourne Speed for the impediment removal; switch to water for Cleansing Wave followed by a dodge roll (evasive arcana) for another Cleansing Wave. A fun rolling strategy. You want to keep the leader driving the group. If you can heal / free them from bonds etc., do so.

  • Retaliation

Watch out for Retaliation and Confusion. It is easy to deal too much damage and sustain the repercussions.

Basic Staff Ele Organised WvW Guide

in Elementalist

Posted by: Neil.6138

Neil.6138

Hello. I run with The Frenzied Few [RAGE] as an elementalist maintaining Staff for raiding and GvGs. I started adding to this guide as people asked me about how I do things.

Solo and organised [RAGE] videos

Role

Primarily a Staff ele is there for a water field. If you are not in position and under cooldown duress then you are not fulfilling your foremost duty.

Secondary, your CC is of utmost importance. Surrounding an unexpected enemy within a Static Field, blanketing an escape route with Frozen Ground, and splitting their backline with a well timed Shockwave can be battle changing. Your melee ball will love the advantage.

Supplementary, staff eles excel at finishing a downed group. The meteor shower that follows your melee train sees the push is not in vain.

  • Build

Firstly, don’t be anywhere near the first to go down in your group. It can be a dangerous playing field for staffies and you’ll be wanting to build to escape damage as opposed to mitigate it – toughness brings you a much smaller return over that important Blink skill.

Power is the way to go with staff; there’s little condi damage. + Healing is a poor attribute in organised events due to blast finishing numbers being the primary heal, and the compromise in damage output.

Use PVT gear until you survive playing ‘one-handed’, and switch in berserker(whatever) as skill at your game increases; finding that thin line where balance lays. Keeping this in mind, a full glass build doesn’t suit myself, as I enjoy getting stuck in, initiating fights, drawing attention and reviving the downed.

Do not be afraid to change-up your bar. When meeting your team at a held, sieged tower, swap in Mist Form to get inside; perhaps use FGS elite for mobility when escaping and positioning in large fights; Tornado for conflicts on walls / bridges, and the elemental summon for open field GvG. Swap out the the situation that fits.

  • Positioning

Arguably the most important thing on your mind, and ‘1200’ is something to take full advantage of; get in behind and to the flanks of the heavies, and hold off groups with CC as you heal teammates at up to 2200 range between the two. Look for escapes, and find them. A dead ranged profession brings nothing but a rally for the opposition.

Practice scanning health bars using the mouse hover to help predict fallen allies and opportunities to stomp. At times I move ahead of our front line to avoid the opposition’s focus damage; they don’t want to waste damage on the solo ele.

  • Calling blasting fields

Give your team enough time to hear your call after VoIP latency so they can switch weapons for blasting. Tell them where the field is being placed. Place Static Fields ahead of your group when on the move. A lead may call for something out of the blue when you think you are doing just fine, if you are on cooldown – say so.

  • Water fields

Geyser is perfect for rolling across your melee ball as they push through. If pushing through siege damage or heavy PUG numbers, call the field and pull it in front for blasting.

The water field of choice for placing into a scrum that your team is advancing into is Healing Rain, whereas for regroups, is Geyser. However for WvW (not GvG), due to team numbers it’s not uncommon for me to place Healing Rain for it’s ease over Geyser’s constraints; namely duration and size.

When meeting a guild on the field / with low staff ele team mates, consider Geyser only for regroups. If hesitant of a lead calling for a water field, understand that Ice Spike is good AoE damage on a low cooldown, and you have Frozen Ground available; switching attunements to see pearly white numbers from a meteor shower may be the down bringing of a battle as your team suffers healing loss.

I prefer to be in a group with the other water-fielders. I can see if they are defeated / downed and their location in regard to where the heavies are. Remembering who has called water fields, I can predict when mine are wanted.

Whilst not confirmed, these are likely improvements to an upcoming build:

- Tab targeting now prioritizes players over npcs (including minions)(mesmer clones are an exception).
– Made adjustments to click targeting to make it more precise.

Keep going, AN.

7:11:3:191:101 error FIX ?

This because i had the issue during one living story update, not another, and now it is back again.

The symptoms are that the game will at some point freeze up (no skills triggering, no npcs moving and so on) and either it will catch up (indicating that the packets are buffered somewhere) or the server will boot me to character select with a :191: error.

Describes my situation, currently.

I’ve had ten or so DC over a few hours during this afternoon. Router, ISP and PC seem fine after testing. Disconnects, high general latency and skill lag plague this game. I help people understand this when they consider creating an account.

I find it very poor, and it compounds me some – why is the design not fitting the purpose.

Listing Ideas for WvW Changes

in WvW

Neil.6138

Some ideas for for discussion in no particular order:

- Settings. Could game settings be separated from WvW and PVE to allow ease of use between ‘PVE best’ and ‘WvW performance’.

- WXP Ranks. Is having the bronze, silver, gold etc as the higher progression less interesting and indicative than using Invader…Knight…Legend etc? For example: Invader > Bronze Invader > Silver Invader > … > Diamond Invader > Assaulter > Bronze Assaulter > and so forth. Would players rather work towards ‘Legend’ than ‘Platinum’?

- Portrait Professions. Could the portraits in WvW have the profession symbols added as is in sPvP.

- NPCs. There’s a larger, brighter, more appealing PvE world out there with NPCs. Could trash be cleared from WvW to alleviate frustration from ‘in combat’, obstructions, interruptions and rallying from a kill situations.

- Targeting. Target boxes are small and seemingly irregular at times? Click to target often selects nothing when groups are stacked. Tab-targeting can select player pets over players; a target just behind you instead of in front, and targetables that are more than 1500 units in the distance.

- Red Target. Often used to add a much required visual aid to a raid leader in organised play, could a different colour guild target be used instead and allow this red target to be used within groups for much better tactical play.

- GvG Arena. Keep it simple? Nuff said.

- Completed Events. The medals that appear – could they have a short duration before automatically disappearing, for a quality of life change.

- Courier Speed. I don’t notice a difference between its 50% increase and the normal Swiftness increase. Is it working? Could it be a greater speed if not and / or last a few seconds longer.

- WXP Capping Rules. Could these be more consistent. Sometimes you are required to stand in a circle, sometimes hit a guard, sometimes a gate…sometimes a combination? Are bugs persisting?

- Nameplates. Very far away players can be seen but their plates do not show. Could red and green be shown at least for these. When players die their plate colours stay the same as alive players, making it difficult to approximate numbers / potential threat etc. Could dead players be grey.

- Loot bags. These are at times ‘push-teleporting’ you when they are generated, from your stationary position, potentially causing you to fall from edges. Why is it AoE loot is in a priority system?

- Click and Turn Camera. Since beta: if from holding the right mouse button you continue to hold, depress the left button, release the right – the camera is not made pan able from the held left button and acts as a pointer only. This stutters play often in combat when panning the camera and moving using the mouse buttons.

- Rally and Resurrection. Whittling down much larger groups can be impossible when players are resurrected so easily from a dead state, and spawned as way points are made usable for very brief moments during contestation. Mass rallying from a single foe (NPC trash or PUG is terrible) often negates the tactical push you may have made.

- Mouse Pointer. Could increasing visibility on this be made available. It gets lost in the fray of FX; very much so for ‘one-click AoE’ users.

- Crouching Thief, hidden Mesmer. Doing the ‘mesmer check’ after capping is boring. If a ‘perma-stealth’ thief and a dead mesmer are present inside a captured node, it would require persistence surveillance to prevent the option of an enemy portal-cap.

Fractal's Ascended Back Piece, a complaint

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Neil.6138

It’s been months since the back piece has been made available via Fractals and I have yet to obtain it.

Firstly I left it to patience and confidence; confidence in you to add avenues, making the item pleasantly obtainable for someone who doesn’t want a monotonous and frustrating experience that makes them feel like they are back in two-thousand and kittening five.

I’ve had enough of the grind, so after ~15 Fractals I’ll end it, and never get those abhorred hours back in my life.

Next I suppose, it will be looking through walls of TP items to buy for levelling those crafting professions that I’ve yet to have any interest in due to the fact I don’t find it fun.

Here’s a smiley face for all the things you are doing very well ->

Players that are defeated have the same colour name plate as when alive. In large battles it takes a detailed look to see who is left standing, and when panning the camera a dead player’s name plate can catch your eye and offer no immediate understanding of the situation involving them.

How about making things clearer.

Stacks and losing them on down

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Neil.6138

Neil.6138

People can regard downed as a mini failure or part death. You are either alive or dead; the downed system is another part of the alive section, and does not mean you will be defeated.

There are builds/tactics that make good use of the down part. I am less motivated to utilise downed due to the stacking system. I am highly motivated in the skill involved in staying alive.

I’m thinking loosing stacks would not be regular enough if they were lost on defeated and not downed, in ANets idea. Or perhaps the function isn’t working as intended, seeing as they(the WXP ones) state lost on death, and yet they are lost on downed.

I am wondering what the thought behind losing them when downed, is.

What are people’s thoughts on not applying themselves so greatly, or taking advantage of some of the more powerful / strategic build downed states due to not wanting to lose stacks?

WvW NPCs - a dumbing down

NPCs in a PVP environment are often an unfun nuisance. Quite frankly I’m kitten ed off with them.

Camps and Structures:

Those wizards are showing my caster up; the archers knock me down when I’m placing a well executed something or other, and ‘perma’ cripple-blind scouts…jeebes.

Mobs

There are places littered with them. Players rally from them. I lost a skirmish yesterday due to a hog knocking me down during a heal-6. They place you in combat. There’s a whole frickin’ world out there to PVE in already.

Would anyone like to see the NPCs, mobs, guards toned down in number and/or utility and damage?

The Targeting system

in WvW

Posted by: Neil.6138

Neil.6138

Tab:

Right and double-click works well, however tab-targeting is a frustration.

Earlier, among a layer of friendly players, I found myself unable to gain target of the single hostile ranger they covered, by using clicks. Tab-targeting got me one set of the roots the ranger had dropped, followed by another set on the second press of the button.

Other cases have seen me ready to fire something into a forward group, but tab-targeting selected the one opponent behind me. Pets, minions, NPCs and a wall have taken priority for whatever reason through tab-targeting, when I’ve wanted a player instead.

The ‘red hat’:

Or the target reticle available when grouped in a party. This is limited. I would enjoy seeing more colours to add options when targeting opponents or siege etc. Perhaps each party member has their own colour. Or perhaps a drop-down menu with symbols, from the target portrait. Personally I wouldn’t want to complicate it too much.

Mostly, I’d like to see a guild member be able to place a different symbol on a friendly to denote the raid/event/driver/lead. Currently organised guilds use the red target for this purpose. It’s a bit rubbish. Actually it’s a lot rubbish.

Previous target:

There’s an option to keybind a function that gives you your last target. It hasn’t ever worked, and is something I would use often if it did.

Focus target:

An invaluable UI and use within World of Warcraft. Probably something you are not interested in adding, but again, I would use it often if you did.

Thank-you. Keep up the good work!

Learning new things all the time, the last two months have been exciting since joining the organised WvW guild Praxium. By all means I’m no pro, but have been asked about builds, rotations, skill usage etc a lot recently, so have written a guide, produced a tips + tricks type video and have many guild event videos with a staff support ele in WvW.

Just an update and a thank-you for the help. Since installing a driver for my keyboard and changing the mains supply lead to a different outlet, the BSOD have stopped.

Touch wood things continue to be stable.

Thank-you all for your helpful input; much appreciated. Original post updated. I’ll grab the dump files next time a crash happens (alter dump file options and know where to get them now).

The memory test was Windows and I set it to run twice and altered the cache setting as advised). I have swapped the RAM in and out to test also, meaning for their to be a fault it would have to be on all four sticks, two of which were bought separately.

Haven’t ran a PSU test like OCCT. Not confident in doing so.

OC are set to their normal states.

That error information is the only one I’ve obtained. It came from a Windows message. Most times the PC resets / black screen / fuzzy screen or still screen (whatever image was rendered at the time).

I have a memory test scheduled for when I shut the PC down and will run that through the night, although I have tested all sticks by swapping them in and out (testing two at a time).

NPC name plates in WvW

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Neil.6138

Neil.6138

NPCs only, at distances further than ~3000, they show, even though the options to turn them off are checked.

I’ve only noticed it within WvW.

To clarify, if NPCs are close to me they have no name plates unless I click / highlight them. At further distances they show up whatever.

EDIT: Found it to be a ‘low graphic option’ that causes it.

Is a grand shame I wasn’t recording tonight due to running a sub-par system (having GPU issues). Enjoyed the EB battles with [SWAT] and [VCY], and RoS/Dz alike. And importantly enjoyed the respect that everyone had to be dancing and celebrating the fun afterwards, whatever server we were on.

Kudos.

New super PC soon for these super encounters.

Advice for CPU/GPU upgrade

My system is running 10-15 FSP within medium-large scale WvW battles, and I’m wanting to achieve a minimum of ~20 (or what you think is decently playable) on good settings.

Currently I’ve drop shadow to low and removed reflections as well as reducing other settings to low-medium.

This is my system:

Win 7 64 bit OS
AMD Bulldozer 6200 Six-core 3.80 OC CPU
16GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 7800 GPU – 4MB RAM

What would you recomend for me to upgrade to if I’m looking at getting descent FPS at a budget price. Switching to Intel is fine. i5? Would i3 do the trick? How is my GPU?

All in all good fights in EB this evening. We ended up more than happy, and with more than full bags :-)

Fan fiction. Elementalist protagonist.

Windbourne Chronicle is a Guild Wars 2 fan fiction within the world of Tyria, following the chance and commitments of Gus as he ventures into an awareness he’ll never return from.

Here’s is an excerpt from an upcoming episode that is due to be posted:

Gus woke to the prickling of damp hay, a pang of pain from a stretched arm, and a double sounding of snoring. His eyes opened and he rose on the palms of his hands; a strand of hay poking into the gape of his mouth. He listened upwards until his palms ached under him.

Slowly moving the covering from his exit and easing out his legs, he kneeled and peeked over the outward edge of the cart. There, hunched over itself, with heads loose and mouths dripping saliva, was the loud sleeping of an ettin.

Beads of moisture flattered across his jawline as Gus met the cool morning’s mist that had settled upon the cart’s remaining planks. The wetness reformed and peeked over his up-facing chin, where it rolled freely down his neck. He immediately rubbed a shoulder into it.

Gus moved. Collecting the backpack, he kept it hung to his side as he looked around the ground at the fire and cart fragments, before stepping a path to avoid them. As his leave of the ettin lengthened, he could see the creature held a mace of wood and stone of irregular shape. Gus took hold of the nearest sturdy plank to him and crept further away.

Reaching the brow of a hill, Gus let his arms loosen; his sturdy plank dug into soil. He saw the slow bob of a pack bull carrying more than itself and being herded by someone just too far away to make out. Light started to begin its reign over the skies; an eagle prowled, and an ettin woke.
Dull thuds and crisp scraping brought Gus around. Three heads looked at each other.

“Huh?”, said one of them.

As the irregular mace lifted, Gus took a backward step and fell into a forward run down the hill’s side, taking a look back only as he steadied himself at its end. Nothing predatory chased him, only inquisitiveness and confusion stood at the hill’s top. And scratched an armpit.
