I suppose for instant casts it wouldn’t be that useful, unless you had an area on the HUD that listed the last 3 spells, instant or casted.

The way it was done in the first guild wars was well done, the instant skills appeared below the other skills. You could tell they were instant as well because there wasn’t the charge-up of the casting bar.

Necro is still very good (i am not saing it is op!) in both specs : terror and power.
Yes only “block” is gone, but overall DS is improved and can take more dmg then ever.

Power necro is terrible.

Did you see how quickly rabid amulet necros were dying in tournaments? Imagine a valk or berserker amulet power necro going into the middle of a team fight and see how long he lasts with s/d thieves around.

Did you even try it?
Yes, S/D thief are painfull to necros, but they are also easy to kill.
Since atm DS is working much better and it is easy to maintain 70-100% of it most of the game, thieves are going down in 3-4 hits.

Too bad there aren’t many s/p thieves slapping necros down anymore, but there never was that many after its first nerf in October.

Hm, I may have to try out s/p with the trickery build.
But what I meant by the DPS is better, is with auto-attacks during longer fights such as against Champions. It seems the DPS for PW is better by pure numbers if you just look at them as is, but over time the auto-attack will slowly edge its way ahead of PW, since you can only use PW based on how much initiative you have left and then it’s either wait for it to come back up or spend time using utilities like roll for initiative, when on the otherhand auto-attack is consistent damage. If I don’t use PW and only auto-attack I could alternatively spam P5 and basically be invuln against anything but Champions and above. Not only does it make me basically invuln but all my teammates as well, and I would more than likely have enough initiative for an instant daze from P4. I can see how PW can be effective in very certain situations but is it REALLY worth investing a build based around it? If you have a build that caters to PW I’m more than willing to check it out and try it myself.

An advantage of Pistol Whip is that it is multiple hits, which means that you have more chances to trigger the Opportunist trait. Also, once the Pistol Whip channel takes place, you have regenerated 1 initiative.
In real life, each Pistol Whip cast costs you just 3 initiative if you complete the cast and you aren’t unlucky to not trigger the Opportunist trait (which is a very low chance, considering the 9 hits). If you are hitting multiple targets, you have the chances to trigger the Opportunist traits even more than once.

Running S/P with trickery build and Steal on 20s recharge, I’m never out of initiative. Stealing gives 3 initative, AoE fury, AoE swiftness, AoE vigor and 2 boons stripped and 2 seconds daze, all at a 20s recharge.

You’re not mentioning the 1% extra damage from each point of initiative as well.

Yea, pistols are pretty awesome, especially with the Ricochet buff. Here’s what I would recommend for PvE:

A lot of the damage comes from the 25 trickery talent, so wait until your ini is full or a tick away from full before using unload.

Isn’t pistol mastery more or less, a waste of a trait? Unload isn’t classified as a pistol skill but a duel wield so you would need 20 points in deadly arts to get the damage boost to unload.

Really, who cares about pve? How can they nerf or buff something without messing with WvW and spvp?

it may not to you, but a lot of anet’s playerbase actually only cares about pve,
and they keep getting screwed over because of pvp balancing. pve balance
between classes is undeniably unbalanced and biased to a few others right now.
just take a look at dungeon grouping sites/ chat.

anet acknowledged the inherent difference between pve/pvp when they were
forced to split the skills in GW1. some skills scales well on both modes, some
are left unused since they are almost next to useless on the other.
they also started splitting the skills here as well (though very slowly)

as for wvw, there already have been numerous suggestions for it as well:
ranging from it doesn’t matter if they follow the pve skillset, to using the pvp
version of the skill with pve gear, to completely creating another skill split
for wvw for very tricky special skills, ect.

I did a survey a while back with 1000+ responses from members of the GW2 community. An overwhelming majority of players are in it for the PvE content and less than 10% are engaged in structured PvP.

so you know for a survery to be legit you need a randomized population of players. did you ask in an unbiased area or were you out in a pve area somewhere?

It was in general discussion, which is as general as you can get.

general discussion where? on forums? in game? even so how can you be sure its an equal ratio of pve/pvp players to online if its in forum. you would literally have to get a list of all players and randomly pick 1000 of them to make it unbiased. i am on the forums alot and i can tell you that 80% at the very minimum here play PVP and thats being EXTREMELY conservative. id guess around 90% play pvp at least on a regular to occaisonal basis here. hence why skill changes are much more important as they reflect changes to and from other classes. i do get what you mean tho. a very large portion of people do play pve but generally pve is pretty kitten ed easy as a thief can 2 hit most mobs that are non bosses. i mean if its 5-6 people obv a warrior/guardian will make easy work of them much easier but thenagain people dont realize how hard the shortcomings of thief really are.

There is a general forum? Didn’t even know. All I see is the spvp forum and profession forums as those are the only ones that matter to me.

S/P has much bigger issues in my opinion… it’s called retaliation.

And why ppl keep assuming? I play S/D since last december (used to play a daze build, now i play a hybrid stealth / acro double S/D build)

Retaliation only gets bad if you’re not paying attention and hitting 2+ people(1 of them usually being a guardian). The flip side of pistol whip’s multi-hit nature is that it benefits GREATLY from opportunist trait which is what gives it the initiative sustain in fights. 1 pistol whip could actually only cost you 3 initiative from natural regeneration and 1 opportunist proc. It also lets you proc low chance sigils like rage (not that anybody uses that anymore) and stuff. Thats why I don’t want them to make it less hits.

People don’t stack a point because it only takes one person for it to remain. It is not due to AoE. If points would swing with more then one person on a point, then it would have been more interesting.

They’ve done it before but for some reason have decided against it which allows bunkers to be quite strong in this game.

I always thought the “infinite range” of shadow return was about the range you could use to portal back to a spot. Apparently according to the wiki on portal, that is radar range.

S/P used to be great before they nerfed quickness. With sigil of rage and critical haste, you could almost always decide when you wanted quickness by pistol whipping since it hit 9( or maybe 17 times if you hit 2 people). Then they nerfed quickness and it turned to crap. The weapon set does have great synergy though. stuns and evasion on 3( too slow w/o 100% quickness though), dazes for interrupting heals, and blinds on downed enemies. Not to mention the amazing-ness of infiltrator’s strike. And to people saying pistol whip does less damage than sword auto-attack chain, pistol whip with 100% quickness was more reliable since it kept them stunned the majority of the time. Once they dodge the last hit of auto-attack (the real big hit), than you lost a majority of your dps.

Tip, if someone blinds you, press 1 a bunch of times to get rid of blindness before you go for the knockdown downed skill. Doesn’t work against d/p thieves.

easiest way to beat a sword thief, watch for his inflitrator’s strike buff and remember where he ported from because he is bound to that spot for 15 seconds. If you are a necro, drop marks on his bound spot, punish him for porting back. Most thieves wouldn’t think to teleport back while dodging so its a free hit xD.

Still waiting for them to make s/p awesome again. Just speeding up pistol whip so it isn’t like bull charge/frenzy/ hundred blades, where they can still walk out of it and not take the full blunt of it would do a world of greatness, at least if you had quickness so its not as marginalized as it is.

Yeah, the problem with a moba is there is too much PvE, I don’t wanna spend 15-20 minutes killing minions. If wildstar has a structured pvp where you can jump in and start like guild wars 2, I’d play it.

Even if they nerf rune boon duration stacking, you’ll be able to reach 65% might duration with 30% from traits, 15% from boon duration runes like monk or water and 20% from might runes.

If each class gets one skill that if they hit a thief or someone invisible with, it pulls them out, there would probably be 50% less complaints about thiefs. Now of course they really need to buff the other theif builds before doing this.

You’d also have a lot less thieves, because why would anyone play cannon fodder profession that has next to no usable defense in any situation?

exactly…u have to remember…invis….is a thieves ONE AND ONLY DEFENSE> :P also…. to the person above saying that 90% play D/D backstab b/c its the best build….obv u have never seen d/p p/d s/d and s/p builds bc they are ALL better than d/d backstab. d/d backstab is the highest burst but also worst dmg bc if u miss…u ahve to run…if u suceed…u ahve to run….if u get blocked….u have to run….and wait for 60 secs on skills to recharge to have any shot at trying again….no offense but if u dont have many thousands of kills on a thief…u really cant say what the best build is. best 1 v 1 builds are d/p and s/d hands down. how much dmg u think a s/d build can do with 2 consecutive stuns for 1.5 seconds and 3 seconds? u just gonna chill for 4.5 seconds and take a beating :P not going to tell u what u need to do that bc its prolly garbage since 90% of thieves dont run it right? Well, if you play a sword thief, positioning is a major defense and stealth is your “oh kitten gtfo.” But no love for sword thiefs qq. I used to run a semi-perma quickness build
cause that it was good way to make pistol whip viable before march 26th but now…

Why do your classes all have differing and uneven amounts of polish? Warrior is well polished and do great PvE damage, everyone else you just sorta… launched.

We’re starting to split PvE/WvW in the upcoming patch.

Now why would you split pve from pve?

So the cof path 1 farmers stay happy lol. I believe it was to appease the thieves that went raging about their autoattack chain being messed up and stuff so they get significantly less backstabs and from how clunky their attack pattern is now.

If the team scores are tied, we compare total player scores for each team. In this case, it looks liked the red team had a total of 50 more player-score.

This was stolen from a thread that had a picture of red team winning 500-500.

The stun+ is caused from not being able to use skill while midair. You used to be able to do it but they made it so you can’t because of people abusing land skills while swimming by jumping out of the water. (Is what I’ve read from forum scavenging over the time gw2 been out.) Stun+ is caused by blowout skills btw, its not random.

your mmr is hidden, mmr is what is used to determine your rank. You need a minimum of 5 games to be on the leaderboard and it reset the win/loss ratio on march 26th but not the mmr. I’d pretty sure I would be on the leaderboard as well if I played 5 games too lol. :p
edit: those games that came from nowhere were probably games that came after march 26th.

“Hold the line!”? Do you realized you’ve found the lost voiceover for hold the line? When a guardian uses the shout, they just say something related to boons but they don’t actually say “Hold the line!” We need someone to move that over to the right skill.

leaderboards are a work-in-progress is what came across to me from what I’ve read anet say about them. They’re just letting us see what they’re comfortable with and I’m pretty sure they can do the same thing they did with “last character used” to make a last guild represented thing.

I tried using the spirit shield once and thought “if spirit weapons didn’t get nerfed, this would be the greatest skill a guardian could have.” The shield makes an absorption bubble every 5 seconds and I’m not sure on how long it lasts but i think its 4 secs.
edit: actually I’m fairly sure that the bubble lasts 4 secs so you get 24 seconds of absorption over a 30 sec period if you have the trait that makes spirit weapons last longer

How people can complain when a mesmer can deal close to 10k dmg with Iduellist ( 8k dmg + bleeding ) from distance, instantly for half the CD of arcane wave?

Lol, show me a screenshot of a mesmer’s Iduellist dealing that kind of damage. He has to be insanely bursty and the target has to have close to 0 armor/toughness.

Not to mention you would have to trait for phantasms and they die in 2-3 hits.

What level do you consider dungeonable?

There is not much of a difference between greens and rares but there is a noticeable difference between rares and exotics. greens=135% base stats boost over white gear, rares=145% base stats boost over white gear, exotics=165% base stats boost over white gear.

At bare minimum it needs to do more damage than the auto attack. As of now I can’t tell a difference and I usually take more damage using it despite the evade because you are rooted, and drop back down into the center of the pile of mobs I am attacking.

If the attack did not root or evade, and even kept the same damage, I would be OK with it if I could remain mobile while using it. Using it as another interrupt that did auto attack level damage while moving would be fine. We need more mobility!

I like the evades though…

I once died from 7.2k retaliation damage by cleaving a guardian and thief. the guardian was rezzing the downed thief and i couldn’t kill the guard cause he had a shaman’s amulet…it made me sad.

retaliation depends on power not condition dmg a guard with shaman’s amulet deals almost no dmg with retaliation

A guardian with shaman’s amulet has a crap ton of toughness. pistol whipping two targets is 17 hits. Woulda survived longer if I autoattacked but was trying to stun the guardian to stop him from rezzing the thief. Had quickness (pre-nerf) the whole time so its not like I coulda reacted fast enough. You are also not considering the thief as well with 2k power-ish.

Why is there even an option for codex arena? There is no build making in gw2 so placing constraints on build making doesn’t change anything.

JQ is the best candidate for transfer from gw1 (assuming no adjustments are made).

JQ and FA were the competitive missions options. Two of the best game modes from gw1 for solo play.

I just posted this in the poll thread about quickness:

I think it’s exactly the kind of balancing they should be extremely careful with because it globally affects classes in different ways: e.g. complaints about Warrior’s reliance on haste to be viable.
While high crit builds such as thieves that can run the sigil (+ trait) have RNG haste and that nerf was welcome.
The pet swapping/stomping Rangers use is another example of a positive nerf, because it was a cheap, unavoidable way to snowball of the already weak downed state of certain classes.

The best way to nerf quickness is tweaking the drawbacks already linked to the skills (no healing for Rangers) seperately for each class and taking away RNG elements that are impossible to counter with skill.

(Too bad, Relfhex high jacked this thread. This is the SPVP section, not the WvW section…)

no d/x thief would ever use sigil of rage. It relies on attacks with high attack frequencies. P/P, S/D, and S/P builds used it so they could be on par with d/x in terms of damage (P/P was still unviable with it). Even before the nerf, you’d probably be better off with sigil of fire since it is okittensec cooldown opposed to sigil of rage’s 45 second cooldown but now there is no point in using it.
edit: and the 2 sec of quickness from petswap was fairly obvious when it was going to occur. You see a ranger running towards a down body? what do you think he is going to do?

Yea that can also be cleansed though. And most builds utilizing epidemic dont take dagger MH. I think Khalifa used a 30/15/10/0/15 D/D build with epidemic at some point competitively. With the current nerf, im not sure that it would still be ideal for that build.
