I’ve tried a ton of suggestions, but the only thing that has worked has been to plug my gaming rig’s keyboard into a USB slot on the laptop.
I’v’e got a new Toshiba Satellite P70 laptop. I’ve found that its function keys require one to press the Fn key at the bottom of the keypad the same time as the top-row multi-purpose-sometimes-a-function-key is pressed.
Yikes. If I hit the function key w/o pressing the Fn key, then GW2 is minimized.
Anyone know of a way to make the Fn key sticky or otherwise work around this issue?

..what about this game in particular makes teens the minority? P2P?
Maybe there aren’t so many young teens, but this small survey shows that 18-25 is almost half: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewanalytics?formkey=dHlvTXlFM2RCYVNpeW0xd3A3Mzk3X2c6MQ
I’m 58, but I’ve only been playing MMOs a couple of years. I started out on the SWTOR beta. Obviously, most players I meet are younger.
Somebody upgraded your rig for you …
The last time I was away, my son installed a fan and reapplied the thermal flux to fix a chronic overheating problem — he’s a good boy.
Maybe this time he twiddled some settings. I’m seeing more definition and effects than I recall.
(edited by Obed.7629)
I’ve been away from my rig for a week, finally got back and logged in, and WOW. WTF happened???
Have the graphics gotten that much better in the recent releases, or have I just forgotten how totally awesome GW2 is???
What a nice surprise.
I wanted to craft a legendary, mainly to get the badge colored in on the character select screen. I picked the harpoon gun Rage to craft because its precursor is by far the cheapest.
After months of work — 77 Mystic Clovers, Gift of Might, Gift of Magic, Koda symbols, etc. — last night I did it!
To my surprise, there were no bells, fireworks or triumphant music. Whatever. While in the dialog to select the weapons stats, it struck me that I didn’t really care if any of my ‘toons use the legendary — its stats aren’t better than what I’ve got, no one will see me use an aquatic weapon, etc. So I sold it for 1,100 gold.
Still the “legendary” emblem was blank (!?!!?!!???). Maybe I needed to log off and back on? I read the description more closely — it’s for EQUIPPING a legendary, not crafting one.
Oh nooooooooooo!
I did not cry. Not because I’m tough, but because I felt completely empty inside. I managed to resist the urge to shutdown my account, uninstall GW2, and reformat my hard drive, although at the time all that seemed pretty appealing.
So it’s back to the drawing board. The only bright side is that I was able to buy the dagger precursor with the proceeds from the harpoon gun.
I already have a few Mystic Clovers. Only 64 more to go. :/
Different strokes, etc., but I have absolutely zero nostalgia for eight-bit video games. Didn’t like adventure box the first time, don’t expect to even try this version.
Y’all have fun. Maybe I can craft a legendary or level-up a mesmer.
Behellagh, you are right about the once-per-day limit, but that’s not the problem. The sucker took 25 of my regular crystals and did not give me any charged crystals.
I have been converting my quartz crystals to charged quartz crystals at Meremoot Hill, in Kessex Hills.
Tonight it took 25 quartz crystals from me but did not give me 5 charged quartz crystals in return.
Is this over? If so, it should not have led me on.
THis occurred on Sanctum of Rall; I was playing my Ranger, Mi Sha Aku, and it was at about 10:55 PM, EDT, on Sunday, 25 August. AKA 02:55 AM GMT, 26 August.
In the Clockwork fights, often gears are displayed. If you hoover over them, you have the option to “Destroy” them, which triggers an animation like finishing a player in sPvP or WvWvW.
Does it do anything else? ‘Cause if not, it’s a waste of precious time if you are trying to thwart Scarlet.
There are commanders and there are commanders. Some are worthy of respect, some not. Ideally, a commander would think about a bigger picture and use the tag to promote success.
As an example: picture an overflow server lucky enough to feature an invasion. Two commander tags are on the map. One of the commanders is calling things out in map chat, making suggestions. The other just follows the first one around. Ultimately the invasion event fails because not enough Aetherblades get defeated.
Which commander is worthy of respect, and which isn’t?
Give respect where it’s due, withhold respect if it’s undeserved, but there’s no excuse for being abusive, which I think was the OP’s complaint. :/
At least they didn’t reveal the biggest and most disappointing spoiler: Trahearne lives.
Oops. Sorry, I know you were hoping the dragon eats him and dies of food poisoning.
Gosh, all the haters. I’ve never understood the ill will towards Trahearne. :/
The game update notes (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/updates/Game-Update-Notes-August-20-2013) mention the change to the character select screen, which I love, but I looks like ArenaNet has also spiffed up the colors and animations during play.
I love it, and I’m glad that they take the time to look at stuff they’ve already done and is working fine, and still ask the question “how could this be better for the player?”
I defy anyone to find an easier JP than this: http://dulfy.net/2012/10/08/gw2-buried-archives-cursed-shores-jumping-puzzle-guide/
There are no jumps! Just scramble up fungus, no worries about falls. The only problems are making it to the start, and fighting off the guards to get the loot.
If you are a thief, that last bit is not so challenging: do stealth, get your reward, and leave.
I’m trying to learn how to drive my stealth thief.
In this video, Yishis gets highly effective stealth out of Black Powder/Heartseeker, without using Smokescreen or Cluster Bomb: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRcTKt47ixk. This is using a dagger/pistol & shortbow build.
His utility skills are Signet of Shadow, Shadow Refuge, and Infiltrator’s Signet.
I’m at work, but I’m going to try to make this work when I get home.
Any readers (other than Yishis
) have success with prolonging stealth by using Black Power/HeartSeeker?
Just noticed that in a more recent video, Yishis has moved to dagger/dagger. Hmm, more studying to do…
TL;DR: no, it’s just no fun. I’m sure it feels great if you are lucky enough to win.
I’ve loved this month’s content, except for Adnul. Although I have tried many many times, thinking I’d get lucky, it’s been totally frustrating. Some claim the minigame is working as designed, but the only way I could make sense of that would be to assume that the developer wanted people to hate GW2.
Here’s a guide: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/bazaar/A-Guide-to-Belcher-s-Bluff
(edited by Obed.7629)
When the dust settles, my charr is going to hang with the ogres at Obsidian Run for a bit. Do some fishing and hunting, lounge around the waterfall, maybe find a mature lady charr interested in light conversation and companionship…
I’ve had fun playing my thief like a glass-cannon warrior, but I’d really like to try giving stealth a try.
In the awesome Yishis video, the thief is in stealth quite awhile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRcTKt47ixk
I’ve replicated the trait and skill settings and come pretty close with weapons, armor, and adornments. But I drop out of stealth in a few short seconds.
Is it simply a matter of Black Power then Heart Seeker?
To complete the event, I needed to find the Tassi box in my inventory (looks like a little sphere), destroy it, and then restart the event.
DESTROY Kit, obtain new one. Instance should restart.
I don’t have a kit to destroy.
EDIT
——
Yes, in fact I did. It was an innocuous little sphere in my inventory.
After destroying the kit and going through the event again, I was able to complete the it, and then visit the various suspects and get credit for that, too. Thanks!
(edited by Obed.7629)
See https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/dragonbash/Every-Piece-Matters-Bugged/. Plenty of the same complaint, no effective work-around posted.
I am stymied. Guess it’s time to give the dragon stuff a rest.
EDIT
—-
The work-around is to look in your inventory, find and destroy the kit, and then restart the event.
(edited by Obed.7629)
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/dragonbash/I-have-a-dream/first#post2251539
Basically go back into the scene of the crime and use the kit on the people with the red stars over their heads. The one by the conversation and the 4 or 5 on the stage. Destroy your kit first though.
Tried this early on. It did not help. Any other ideas?
I’m having exactly the problem described in https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/dragonbash/Every-Piece-Matters-Bugged.
I applied the Tassi box to everyone and the one person that had a reading had an excuse, so we had no suspects. Then I stupidly responded to my personal story icon, so I left “Every Piece Matters” without the final conversation with Inspector Kiel.
When I go back, Marjory won’t give me another Tassi box, none of the suspects has an icon indicating that they will respond, Kiel just tells me that we have no suspects, and I get no credit for the story. I’ve still not identified any suspects, and I don’t even know where or how to look.
Have I hosed up things beyond repair? :/
Every time I light a dragon effigy, my loyal acrtodus pet looks at me as though to say “You’re kidding, right? Tell me you’re kidding!”
Norns can’t dance. :P
I don’t know it’s name, but there’s one in SE Gendarran Fields that isn’t about jumping as much as it is doing little fights and getting a secret underwater passage opened up. Definitely need to watch a YouTube vid though, to find out what to do and where to look.
If you are high enough level to get there, go to Orr and acquire the EXPERIMENTAL RIFLE: http://dulfy.net/2013/01/16/gw2-useful-and-fun-consumables-guide/#3b
It allows you to make jumps like the Engineer’s Rifle skill “Jump Shot”. I find it very handy. I bought 50 to begin with (they are SOULBOUND and last about 5 minutes or until you try to make an “impossible” shot.) With the Jumping Puzzles as a Monthly Achievement, I decided to go back and make it a whole stack of 250. (You’ve gotta complete 3 events before the Vendor will sell them to you. And she only sticks around for about 5 minutes. So I figured I may as well stock up instead of having to go through all that again.)
Very cool, Hamfast! Thanks for that info; I can’t wait to give it a try.
I believe Urmaug’s Secret is the easiest due to the shortness of it, the ease of the jumps, but mostly the quick access to it.
(That’s the one by the waterfall in the NE corner of LA)
I cheated and looked at the video walk-thru of Urmaug’s Secret. Speaking as a kitten-poor jumper, It looks a jillion times harder than King Jalis’s Refuge, and an order of magnitude longer.
Most of you folks probably grew up with MMOs. I’ve been playing them for about 19 months, and I’m 58 years old. It took me forever to graduate from WASD. And recently I’ve figured out that I was crippling myself because apparently I had internalized Newtonian physics so much that I wasn’t even trying to jump around corners. kitten that education!
Not complaining, not whining, just saying there are reasons I’m so bad at jumping. I’ll deal with it. :P
EDIT
——
OK, I just did it. Urmaug’s Secret is only a little harder than King Jalis’s Refuge, although I don’t think I could have figured out how to start without previewing the video walk-thru.
(edited by Obed.7629)
Has anyone compiled a list of the easiest jumping puzzles? I’m terrible at them, so it would be helpful to me.
My vote would be for King Jalis’s Refuge, in Snowden Drifts. I was able to complete it without a portal, without a guide, without looking up the YouTube video. And it’s short!
I thought sPvP was intense.
Then I played Dragon Ball. Whoa!
Nice job, ArenaNet!
Da Sonic, if you shaved Rytlock, you might find he had a very full figure… :/
Neither flamethrowers nor my equipped weapons have any effect on the karka nests in Captain’s Retreat.
Wind Riders have an uncanny resemblance to Octocat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XV6dLhepx6w
Is that just a coincidence?
…Repeat it until his health bar is gone. Takes about 5 mines.
@ASaturnus: Thanks to your advice, I got the ugly kitten. I’d quibble that it probably took closer to 20 mines than 5, but I only saw him hitting a mine a couple of times. Most of the time I was kiting like crazy while defusing all the mines I could.
How long do you play that you don’t know that? That’s no mistake of ArenaNet, just your own fault.
Give the info, keep the attitude to yourself, o wise one.
My first and so far only try at Canach was like some nightmares I have where I have a toy gun and people are shooting at me with real guns.
Every skill I tried caused zero damage; when he hit me, he hit me kitten hard.
To tell you the truth, I found it boring and tedious as all get out, but I’m assuming there is a trick to this to get your attack to cause some damage.
Anyone feel like filling me in?
Thanks.
EDIT
I tried this with my Ranger. None of the longbow attacks caused any damage, none of the greatsword attacks caused any damage, I don’t believe either of my pets hurt him at all, and the sucker could out run me. Kudos to folks who got him on the first try, but it’s a kitten mystery to me. I’m gonna come back with my warrior and try the advice of Katz, below.
(edited by Obed.7629)
While trying to dig a sand pile in Quest “Help Mei Shadowwalker Reclaim the Wiley Pirate Treasure,” in Glendarran Fields, I get told that I cant’ do this w/o a shovel when my toon in fact has a shovel.
See attached screenshot.
It has been awhile since this occurred. Either I’ve been spending less time in combat (don’t think so, but it’s possible), or Arenanet fixed and/or changed something, or the evil gremlins in my rig have somehow been appeased. :/
It’s in your inventory. A lot of people question this. Look for the item that shares the same icon as the Candy Corn detector from the halloween event. Should say “Sample Detector” for the item, or something along those lines.
White name for the color.
The description reads
“Levvi’s jury-rigged device for locating and collecting anomalos enviromental samples”
Bingo. Not exactly where you’d expect it. :/ See screenshot; the green circle on the bottom row is the detector.
In the new Southsun content, I put down the “sample detector” to defend myself against a young kara. When the fight was over, the detector was gone.
When I went to the NPC to get another sample detector, the option was available, but no detector was given to me.
The “before” screenshot is attached.
Thanks, all, for the great replies!
So many excellent and informative responses! Thanks.
Hi everyone,
I just open thief … idk what WvWvW (pvp build) build and PVE build (CoF, Fracalt and maybe arah) to take. can you guys recommend 2 good builds 1 for WvWvW and 1 for PVE
I’ve had fun with Lowell’s Venom Share thief even outside of sPvP; see http://www.gw2db.com/skill-builds/982-lowells-venom-share-thief.
For the last couple of months, I’ve been using a dual-dagger build based on http://www.gw2db.com/skill-builds/486-my-first-try-for-a-wvw-roming-build.
I’ve got both thief and warrior toons. Love ‘em both, but I have more fun with the thief. And for what it’s worth, in sPvP the thief has a huge advantage over my warrior in games-won percentage.
I’ve leveled up a warrior, an elementalist, and a thief. All builds are glass cannon-esqe; the warrior & ele emphasize crit damage while the thief is more power & condition damage.
I love playing the thief & warrior, but I find the ele frustrating, I guess just too hard. Mobs kill me while I’m trying to cycle thru air/fire/earth, etc.
If the ele feels too squishy (and it’s me, I know that some people kick butt with this profession), think the ranger would be too hard for me?
(I’ve submitted a nearly identical post to the necro list; it will be interesting to compare the answers.)

I’ve noticed some cannons and mortars in WvWvW at less than 100% health.
Is this damage from bad-guys, or have they become susceptible to despawning?
And if it’s damage rather than a last-used timer, is there any way to repair it?
Thanks.
You can escape by removing and reequipping a weapon.
Thanks! Sometimes the available WPs are a long way from where I want to be.
… As you can see in the picture, you are on an uneven surface. If you jump or fall onto an uneven surface, the game no longer realizes it. It still thinks you’re in the air until you walk or run in any direction.
That’s 100% consistent with my experience.
Given your clear description, let’s hope they get a fix in soon.
Twice today (5 May) in WvWvW, when I have used an arrow cart on the inner border of a parapet it has refused my request to leave; the message was something along the line of “cannot perform operation while in the air”. The only escape I have found is to WP.
In the attached screenshot, I was stuck to the arrow cart. When I took the screenshot I was hoping to capture the red error message, but either I was too slow or pressing the keys to request a screenshot dismissed the error message.
This is pretty closely related to https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/crafting/Why-didn-t-I-get-a-clover. Maybe I’ll go back to trying one at a time.
