Almost 3600 hours, 15+ toons (all lvl 80), 100% world completion on 1 toon, many hours spent in wvw (some commanding) and luck currently around 130%. Started gathering bits for a legendary ages ago but eventually gave up due to cost.

Got my very first pre last night after spending 40G on the cheapest exotics on TP (all under 2G) and throwing them into the forge. Figured I might at least get a better exotic back and ended up with tooth of frostfang. Spent the next 20 mins running around in circles unable to beleive my luck.

The devs have said on many occasions that wvw is not intended to be fair. Is it intended to be quite so unfair though? It’s bad enough being on a low pop server, regularly outnumbered 3-1 but the new buff just punishes us even further. If the intent was to force zerg’s to split up between more points then nice try but reward them with decent loot rather than bonus stats. Kudos for trying something new with wvw but shame about the epic fail. I may dust off the old X360 and take a break while wvw <> fun.

There’s another thread around here somewhere with some other good ideas for new jp’s and some suggested locations. While I’m not overly keen on them, I have a good idea for one in the norn area. It could be set deep in the caves at the north end of Hoelbrek and is basically a long treacherous route down into a dark chasm. At the bottom (from the players perspective) is a column of rock in the middle with a single building. It has a sign which reads “last bar on terra firma”

^^This.

I have now done all of the non time-limited jp’s once and have no intention to repeat them unless they start dropping some useful stuff. I’d rather be working towards a legendary than falling from high places. The points for JP’s seems a bit low compared to the living story events as well (which are often much easier to do).

Anet can and does change the rules. I don’t blame them. They have openly said that skins take an age to develop. Why should all that work benefit only the few who got lucky with the RNG? Isn’t it better if a good designers work is easily accessible and we show our support in-game? It may lead to even better designs from the same people in future.

Go watch the videos on twitch. You should be closing portals and killing specific mobs before the timer runs out to get a chance at Scarlet. If there is a massive zerg when you get there then find the next portal instead of balling up.

This content seems to be an anti-zerg trainer but not everyone is tuned in yet. According to the twitch stream, it’s also here long term but will be less frequent than every hour. Great news for us who are actually enjoying this.

Too much zerging

Basically, the bigger the zerg, the bigger the champs, the more time players waste on attacking “leftovers” after portals are closed.
If I had a commander tag, I’d totally deactivate it and tell all other commanders to do the very same.

You have to remember this is new content and there are a lot of people out there with zerg mindsets. During the login-server issue last night I watched the twitch stream. The dev clearly stated that any groups bigger than about 20 would be innefficient. When people flocked to his tag he would zone to one of the other portals; not everyone would follow straight away as they would be in combat so unable to travel. This might be the best tactic for commanders to spread their followers out – along with some comment in map-chat about which mobs should be targetted maybe?

Once you’ve done the jp’s the rewards are not spectacular and I’m not convinced a few materials will entice people back to an aspect of the game that some people find frustrating/annoying/time-consuming. If they are to be rewarding, at least consider allowing us to earn more achieivement points for repeating them. I rarely see others doing the jp’s in wvw these days now that blueprints are on the TP.

In GW1 I had a character called Tanya Levenmar. You can probably guess when her birthday was. Likewise Seppy Tuwon is not too difficult to decipher. Another character called Santi Claus always used to get me a birthday present at christmas

This can also help if you have trouble thinking up names or the one you want is already taken. Jan, April, May, June are convenient first names for fem chars. Julius & Augustus works well for male chars. If I created a character today he would probably be called Augustus Wonfyve.

In GW1 I could tell from the login screen when a birthday was due which is a lot quicker than logging in to them all and typing /age.

Some people thought the Abaddon story was everything. Some people thought it deserved to be bigger than just “another fractal”.

When you consider what Evon could have offered (from his extensive collection of gem store goodies or his taxes on every TP transaction) you realise he’s a bit of a cheap-skate and not worthy of votes. Ergo he lost and rightly so. Next time he should up his offer as he’s the biggest leech in the game. He also could have come up with a way to ban TP flipping and earned a lot more support.

I started wvw with my thief and really enjoyed it apart from all the negativity on the forums which generally goes along the lines of “omg a thief killed me… stealth is too OP… what a kitten class… shame they can’t really play and have to run & hide”.

I’ve now switched to my guardian which is very different but just as enjoyable. I’ve also been known to switch to other classes when my team really needed an extra mesmer or ele.

Play them all; don’t be afraid to swap skills and try new builds. Try to include skills which benefit your entire team rather than just your character. Stick with the one that seems best fitted to your play style… until you feel like a change then try another. Don’t get caught up on needing a specific class or build or equipment. Go in knowing you will win some battles and lose some too (usually by being outnumbered). It’s a game, enjoy it.

Do you prefer if there was no LW contents?

in Living World

Pewintodo.4138

Another question I have: How was GW1 handled in terms of contents? did it have this kind of LS or any expansions. unfortunately I never got to play GW1 and don’t know the details.

There were some similarities. GW1 had a character called Nicholas the traveller (and his companion – a dolyak called Prof. Yakington). He moved around to different areas each week and swapped his rewards for various numbers of a specific drop (e.g. 5 animal furs for 1 gift of the traveller). There was also at least 1 bonus mission pack which I think had different reward tokens (exchangable for new weapon skins). There were also some mini games which returned for annual festivals. The biggest differences were the trading system (which had many scammers) and the ability to choose skills from a secondary profession. There were also some elite dungeons (underworld and fissure of woe) where you could take a particularly effective solo skillset build and farm high value loot which would otherwise have been distributed among a whole party. These could be accessed from each expansion pack as well. There were also some players who would “run” a party from one place to another (waypoint) through some tough areas for a small-ish fee.

The expansions generally added a new continent to explore, new dungeons, 2 new professions, new skills for existing professions and a whole new storyline to complete. Then they added quests like the black moa chick where you had to have all the expansions and do a cross-continent scavenger hunt. In the Factions expansion you had to side with either the Luxons or Kurzicks to earn faction (points) which could be spent on accessing an elite dungeon in their respective area or to make Luxon or Kurzick armor. When you went back to the opposing areas the merchants wouldn’t trade with you.

The rewards for completing various parts of the game became more important after it was announced there would be rewards in GW2 for GW acheivements. The hall of monuments was created as a place to display your acheivements and you could exhibit statues of your mini-pets, weapons & armor sets to your team. There was also one area for trophies (similar to the Zephyr sanctum model) which you would get when you completed the main antagonist of each expansion or completely mapped a continent, or all of them. After beating an end-level opponent you also got a reward which could be exchanged for an end-game weapon or sold.

They also introduced a hard-mode so you could go back to low-level areas but instead of being scaled down, the mobs and rewards were scaled-up. There were also some memorable characters such as Kilroy Stonekin who would turn up in certain areas and when you talked to him, he would ask you to help him… then he would charge straight into the nearest high-level mob shouting “kiiiiiiiiiiilllllllrrrrroooooyyyyyyy sttttttooooonnnnnneeeekkkiiiiinnnnnnnn” and you would get a reward at the end if you kept him alive.

It was a truly awesome game which I played for 6+ years and I still remember the first time I played (factions) and there was an area where the leaves were just being blown from the trees. The artwork was just so fantastic given that you didn’t need to have the highest spec PC to run it. I also remember getting a black dye drop and when I got back into town discovering how valuable it was (imagine finding an Abyss dye on your first ever trip out of Divinity’s). Best of the genre without a doubt and turned out to be amazing value for money.

I hear what you’re saying but to me it’s only the same as saying “if you start wvw today, you’re always going to be many wvw ranks behind those that started playing it 3 months ago”. Obviously true but it’s not a major issue.

We don’t yet know what the AP limit is and what happens if we get there. Will it be open-ended or capped at some upper limit? I would guess the latter given the account bonusses which are linked in. In which case there will come a day when those who have already hit the cap will only be unlocking new skins/minis ect.

My reason for thinking this is simple. If it’s not capped we will get to a stage where someone can kill a mob outside divinity’s and get 22 coppers but with 1,000% gold bonus that would become >2 silver. 100,000% and you get 2 gold which would be really silly. It seems likely that the boosts will get capped at some level so any points after that will be purely to unlock rewards or for bragging rights. As soon as someone makes a big deal about having thousands more AP’s than me I will just say “yeah…. but I have a life!”.

I don’t see the need to complete everything just for a few AP’s. There are other ways to get them besides LS and as time goes by there will be better guides on maxing them. Instead of focusing on how many are forever lost think about how many more will be added every other week. Am I going to spend 12 hours trying to complete Liadri and spend x amount of gold on traits and upgrades? No! I’ll perhaps do the daily and combine the kill x creatures in kryta with kill x creatures underwater simultaneously and get an extra point more than I need for the laurel.

Who wants to be a slave to the LS when you can go and throw hammers at other people in wvw? Just do the ones with rewards you’d really like. One day they will hopefully balance it so you can get the same number of points in pvp/wvw as PvE/LS in a fortnight

I don’t care how long anyone has used their item, if the function of it or the usefulness of it is removed the purchaser should be entitled to some form of compensation.

I am going to side with OP on this one since a precedent has already been set. In wvw it was decided to refund wvw rank points when arrow carts were made less effective. Like laurels, these took time to aquire and had to be spent wisely. Whether you agree with OP’s motives or not for buying his infusion you should agree there are enough similarities.

Maybe it’s time to add a recycling vendor who gives back karma/laurels/gold for such items? It could make it a lot easier for the devs to remove them from the game and also gives people time and incentive to make the changes voluntarily. Maybe 100% refunds for the first 2 weeks? Eventually at some point after that Ellen/Evon should send the boys round to collect the outlawed equipment due to its magical instability – and it should be funny as hell to watch

Some of it is extremely grinding for solo players. Take the current cut-throat politics for example. Group players get one 10 minute cof run and 1 fractal to earn points towards the mini’s. Solo players need to complete 20 events and get lucky with the direct assist mini-game and then spend several hours in survival/arena. A few days into the episode there’s a patch which makes the direct assist quest even harder to acheive. It would be nice if the field was a little more level.

The token wallet thing is the first step towards being nice to altaholics, but other recent history has not been so kind to us.

Such as the switch on the unlimited axes, scythes and mining picks from a/c bound to soulbound. It would be nice if the gold% gain would ramp up with each alt slot purchased. Getting alts to lvl 80 is easy but the cost of equipping them with decent gear becomes prohibitive – especially if you’re also more of a solo-ist than a group player and don’t really do dungeons & fractals.

I’m an altaholic too; 12 toons, zero legendaries (like I’m going to grind that lot!). At least they add diversity to the player outfits since there’s usually not enough time to equip all of them with the latest living story back-piece etc. The shared wallet sounds like a much needed show of appreciation for all the alts out there. I hope the price stays down – I hate the idea of hordes of PvEers in the JP farming badges for easy gold.

But the more of them that do this, the cheaper the siege gets. They will get less gold back over time as their return diminishes while we take advantage of alpha golems currently costing about 20% of what they did previously becoming even cheaper. For wvw this is good. It will speed up the pace of keep/tower flipping which means more badges and possible blueprint drops while capping – so siege could come down even further.

The limits on golems are now more to do with speed of transporting them and supply. The new rank makes them quicker to build so a 5 person squad can now raid a camp, build a golem and be on their way to taking a nearby tower with far less risk of the golem getting trashed before it can be built. It fits in nicely with what the devs said about rewarding organised groups rather than zergers. A big zerg will probably still wipe you, but it can’t be everywhere at once. I’m happy to repeat last week where we went up the west side of their BL and FoW went up the east side. They might be concentrating on EB if they’ve been up against a server that wouldn’t let them get the kite in OS.

On the subject of acheivements, I still have a mesmer parked at the Aetherblades JP in Gendarran so if any Vabs still need that we can head over from LA during reset (I’m assuming it’s still active – it was last night). Pewintodo.4138

Actually I’m from Vabbi and I’ve never yet been able to WP to our keep on EB. My point was that each side have their own JP and if each had a kite with only one of them needed for the achievement it would have been better for the PvE’ers. The people currently being accused of griefing would need to split their numbers between all three JP’s while at the moment they only need to camp OS. Even Vabbi could get enough people together to wipe out 1/3 of which ever high-pop server decided to try to control our BL puzzle.

I also don’t beleive that the OS JP is easier than the BL JP’s which are a doddle. As I said, the fact that mobs are not camping these and the availability of cheap siege on the trading post just proves that being in OS to prevent the other sides getting siege is a load of tosh. The only reason to stay there is to prevent this influx of PvE’ers from getting the achievement which is a bit harsh on the lowbies and low rankers imho. Many of them may not even be aware that friday is WvW reset night and it could be a lot easier afterwards.

Jumping puzzle griefers

in WvW

Posted by: Pewintodo.4138

Pewintodo.4138

However, not everyone who fights in the OS is griefing. The reward chest at the end gives siege blueprints, for free, two per customer per day. It is NOT unreasonable to assume that they do not want you to get free siege plans that can be used against them in the future.

As long as the puzzle awards plans – or Badges, which can be traded for plans – then players have every right to stop each other from getting them.

That would be true if those groups were also camping the other JP’s in each border at the same time which also give free siege. Devons idea that some people will experience this and stick around after is probably flawed since only one of the WvWvW teams will be dominating that spot at any time so 2/3rds of these visiting PvE’ers are unlikely to return – especially if they never get the kite acheivement.

The thing that drew me in to WvW was the free entry from anywhere and exit portal to lions arch. One day I decided to stick around to see what was going on and luckily there were a few good guilds about and I started to learn WvW and began to enjoy it. As Devon says, this kite is not essential but I doubt it will encourage PvE players to come back to WvW when this event ends. I think this is a shame especially on servers with low pop or low WvW take-up. Now that siege has also been made tradable they will just sell those things and go back to PvE and you can’t really say that camping OS is denying blueprints which are so cheap on the TP, especially when there are so many WvW players complaining about how much more gold PvE’ers can earn compared to them in the same amount of time.

I’m fine with the devs putting things like this where they choose as they have built up a game to be proud of and you can’t blame them for wanting us to appreciate all of the content they have developed. After all this time and 11 lvl 80 toons there are still things that I haven’t really spent much time on (keg-brawl & pollymock etc). I even found myself doing my first ever fractal last night so this stuff works as an incentive. I do think that if the intention was to draw more players into regular WvW there are better ways (e.g. a kite in each BL JP with only one needed to count towards the award).

For what it’s worth, my server had the whole of EB last night and the enemy were referred to as “free loot” on several occasions. They outnumbered us but included groups of lowbies and low rankers so I really hope they do get the achievement at some point. If they do, they will know they have totally earned it.

Really cool. If you try to talk to him after the show he says something like “No autographs between shows”. It’s the little things like this that make an npc more than just somewhere to go to pick-up a quest. Nicely done devs

I’m… still slightly confused at what you’re upset about. o___o;
But anywho, I think people would be more ticked off if the failed achievements weren’t locked away not to look at. If they were out in the open I think it’d be rubbing it in more.

I looked at the new UI for the first time last night and I thought the ones I didn’t acheive had been removed. It would be nice to have the option of seeing completed and uncompleted together especially when you’re looking at living story type events. I think I read somewhere that the 8-bit gamesbox would return at some point so it would be nice to see all of those together with the bits I need to complete (especially now there are rewards for achievements – thank you Anet for that).

I’m sure some stuff is lost for good as no doubt a lot of the living story will not be repeated but does it really matter if there’s going to be a load of new content every fortnight? It is tough on the casual who gets something to 90%+ and then can’t complete. It would be a nice gesture if that time & effort could be rewarded – maybe converted into a discount for one of the next acheivements?

Seperate builds for WvW

I’d settle for the quick template code system from GW1 although now we are getting quartz nodes in home instances it would be good if there was a quick home travel icon (similar to the WvW one) at the top of the screen.

If they could add on a wardrobe vault and have a quick way to choose skills, traits & armor sets while there it would make home instances really useful. Throw in an npc fashion adviser with a magic mirror to show off the current most popular looks (or just a random set) for your class & profession and Bob’s your tailor. Add an option to use that to set-up any required achievement views and an optional filter for items that need gems and I could see the home instances becoming seriously useful.

Don’t worry about a banker though. Ebon Gnashblade can invoice us by mail and send around a couple of charr debt-collectors when we default – as most of us would for a humorous cut-scene thrown in.

There are other ways you can get scraps. There are traders in the new area that will swap x number of common crafting materials (material scraps, ores, zhaitaffy etc) for boxes which have a chance to drop scraps and also some new recipes. This new content looks like an economy fix as you need more of these materials from the lowest & highest level areas than you do from the mid-range zones where people tend to race through.

As a result you might be better off mining the gold ore in the zone just south of Lions arch. You only need 30 to trade for 1 box (you can also use the trading point but expect these materials to increase in price as this becomes known). Once you have 30 just head over to the traders in the new area and find the right one to trade with. I suspect the gem-store bought boxes have a better chance of rare drops but the jade tickets showed us it was better to open a lot of common coffers than to throw real money at the rich ones.

Google “Dulfy” for more info on the new content. If I’d seen that a few days ago I would have stocked up on those trading materials while they were cheap.

Jumping Again?

It takes a bit to get used to the new skills especially figuring out which to use where. If the jump is horizontal and looks a bit too far it’s probably the new #3 skill. I didn’t realise straight away that the purple obelisk things act as an auto-target so if you are near one of those you can just press #3 to auto-jump to the other side. I found once I’d got the second waypoint it was easier to go back down and the visibility of the crystals is improved.

Not keen on the vanishing skills I have to say. Also there are some crystals which seem highly visible but a waste of time trying to get to. Just that tiny bit too high or far. I managed to get 40 though and discovered the location of another 4 that I gave up on. Also not keen on the high falls to certain death followed by wp charges. For future suggestions, rather than clutter a new area with lots of shiny power-ups why not go with a transform tonic instead. It makes sense in the Mario-kartesque sprinting game but for area exploration there are too many negatives – you die, you get charged to wp, you have to remember where you found the power-ups, you’re not sure if skill #1 will run-out before you reach point x because you missed 1 jump etc.

At least by the time you get 40 crystals you get the feeling that you have really earned the little statue thing.

By the way, I prefer to focus on whoever is green but it’s hard when there’s Vabbi groups cutting our supply/attacking our BL. ;<

You can thank Jd for that one too. They stopped us re-taking Arah in our borders last night so we had no supply going to bay where most of our pop were trying to hold off BT. I got the camp down to just the guild lord when Jd turned up and stealth wacked then took it. Guess which border my next solo camp caps were on? Sorry you were distracted but if your own guilds were helping on your own border you might have more success maybe?

From my point of view; it’s not about “kitten Vabbi in their BL” – it’s about what is the easiest to capture and hold at any given point to cumulatively give us the best points per tick.

You come to Vabbi because we are “easiest”? Well that works both ways, especially when your camps are so ridiculously easy to take. Sorry if that causes a supply shortage in your towers and I’ll send a box of chocolates to the widows of those noobs left defending if it helps. Compared to trying to defend our borders against two servers though it was just… y’know… easy! You might want to think about that.

Well my vote goes for the next set to have dark ethereal fx – something like the necro’s death-shroud would look good on a sword.

It’s a shame that some self appointed e-bullies try to tell/force others how they should play or enjoy the game and to exit WvWvW/not to run with the zerg etc. Have a nice day!

You can always select to ignore them in chat channel. It’s true that some people seem to think it’s ok to hassle others and what usually happens is someone else reads that chat and decides to go back to PvE instead. The best solution is to be the last action hero. Be the guy who still has max supply when all others have used theirs. Be the person who has blueprints when nobody else has any.

A little humility goes a long way in wvw so if I see a newb put down an AC in a place I know it’s going to get trashed really quickly I help them build it. They learn more this way and don’t get discouraged from playing. I might also whisper that the spot where I’ve moved to would be better next time and explain why. The first AC may be a waste of supply but it’s one time only. Telling people not to do things only winds them up which results in a smaller team and less people following certain commanders. Personally I don’t chastise newbs for game mechanics like rallying which needs to be addressed.
