Don’t let your kid play this game or they’ll turn into those little monsters in the Wayfarer Foothills.

You know, the ones that throw snowballs and irritate adults so you can get a heart quest.

More Threshold in all Rev Design

in Revenant

Pink Porcupine.5461

Apologies for general vagueness. This is a conceptual critique rather than a “Adjust these numbers” sort of feedback.

I think Revenant’s rotation isn’t fun for a single-weapon class and I have serious misgivings that Shiro/Glint will actually make it better. The problem is that, unlike the other single weapon classes, rev does not constantly cycle through its abilities. It doesn’t have enough cooldowns to facilitate an active rotation that busies your fingers. Granted, it doesn’t have to be an engineer rotation, but I felt Rev just didn’t press a lot of buttons.

The trick here is that we don’t have to have a lot of button presses, but we do need more variables to decide upon. This is where the Equilibrium trait made the idea clear.

Energy provides multiple unique phases and it needs to be more than just a chokepoint. Using abilities at high and low energy should change their effects more drastically than they do now. Having pre-emptive, decision-based cooldowns would help the class without compromising their unique on-the-fly abilities. For example, Inspiring Reinforcement should have an empowered effect if it’s used above 75% energy because it gives players the choice for a 5 second wait upon switching. On the other hand, there should be a trait/built in perk to Mallyx for skills used in the negative threshold.

More importantly than utilities, weapon skills definitely need the threshold treatment. It would act like a soft-weapon swap and gives the variety the class desperately needs. However, instead of just empowered, the weapon skills need to take on different characteristics rather than just being objectively worse at a specific threshold. For example, mace 1 would apply a different condition at>50% than it would at <50%. Stuff like that.

We learned from warrior that full class resource parking is a bad thing. Consider the 25%-50% and the 75-99% range for Rev parking traits. Heck, you could put both of the traits in the same trait class and make the player choose between playing energy spendy or thirfty. Playstyles, playstyles everywhere!

Veteran Players get too much.

Dear community managers,

I know there’s a lot of furious threads. I’m a little less furious so here are some gentle, albeit snarky, words. I’m aware there are other threads and I usually advocate for tidy, concentrated topics, but this is actually worth stepping outside the box for.

Here’s the problem: I have to fork out 10 bucks, buy a CE or dump a sack of gold into gems to play a new class. It just seems a little strange to get me all riled up to play with magical laser hammers, only to remind me that I can’t actually do it without forking over extra dough or blowing up one of my beloved characters. Subsequently, new players automatically get their chance at the new guy without any restrictions.

I mean, I get it, using tomes is clearly a bad thing here. There needs to be some strange, cryptic barrier that prevents me from glistening like the gilded city right next a poor neonatal Rev who aspires to be as great as me. I mean, if he read more, he might be as awesome as I am, but whatever.

I do appreciate what you’re doing for new players. No sarcasm here. I nodded and said to myself, “I can take the hit on the price tag to get more new people into this game.” I can take this 50 bucks and pay for the brilliant dental work of Colin. I don’t mind a cohesive approach with the free base game. Ideally, I wish we could just trade that base for a character slot if we already have an existing account, but maybe I’m just crazy.

I just felt a little strange. Character slots were a welcome sight in GW1 standalones. I figured you’d do the same with this game. You still got the gems out of me to pay for enough character slots to play every class. I’m not exactly a whale here, but I’ve paid some of my dues.

Isn’t there a way we can both have the same silly thrill of having a hyped up, sparkling new class at the same price point? I know you’ll be short a lot of tens and twenties. Your accountants revile me and your bottom line is probably shrieking in dismay, but it’d be nice if you did a little pivot on the character slot.

Two hands, two shields. Make it so.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Pink Porcupine.5461

Listen, if a greatsword and hammer are going to be vehicles for lasers and other ranged nonsense, we might as well rocket ourselves into the moon with mainhand shield for Mesmer’s specialization.

Goofy reasons why this should be a thing:

Mesmer currently has two 2H and two MH 1H. Conversely, its closest cousin Necromancer has one 1H and three MH 1H. Well, that’s convenient. (I’m forcefully ignoring the number of Offhands available because I’m not here to promote honest speculation.)

It effectively solves the problem with the skill number disparity between those getting 2Hers vs 1Hers. (I petition that Shield MH3 gives us the gap-filler necessary to maintain permanent swiftness with focus, on a side note.)

It fits the sub-theme of Mesmer doing unconventional stuff so well that it might as well exist just on that principle alone.

We can go the full distance of wonk by having some sort of weird class mechanic that takes all your spare armor that you’re getting from your shields and turning it into something not spare-armor, like ferocity. Yeah, ferocity.

Make it a thing, Colin. Show me a miracle.

Grind is still grind

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Pink Porcupine.5461

Last time I checked, there isn’t an arbitrary gear check to compete in competitive formats. The only place where there is a grind is fractals, and that’s there primarily to simulate an incentive that is necessary for progression-style content.

So no, the grind that GW2 talks about addressing is not the grind that OP is trying to refer to.

Childish writing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pink Porcupine.5461

Pink Porcupine.5461

I think its more of an animation/camerawork/format problem than a writing problem. Video game writing hasn’t been that good since the times where writing was all you had to portray something, and even there, there’s nothing that rivals a serious literary gem. Bad writing might’ve been a problem back in the SNES days, but nowadays, what passes for ‘good’ storytelling isn’t all that high and good storytelling is now predicated on non-writing elements.

It’s probably attributable to the fact that watching someone stand equidistant, gesture mildly and have minimal facial rigging really takes the thunder out of everything. The only time I really felt like something made sense was when Gixx talked. His face as kitten mean as his character is.

why people say there's no endgame

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pink Porcupine.5461

Pink Porcupine.5461

Honestly, my endgame is trying to solo champions all the time. It is very doable with full exotics and probably quite easy with ascended. This used to be just a mere exercise in kitten-measuring, but since they added bag loot tables to them, it’s a little less obscure.

It worked for me. It made the game a lot harder so I started investing more time into building properly and reading visual cues on monsters with the idea that if I get hit once, even if I live, I’ve probably lost. Transforms the game from being a simple 1 spam to a very reactive experience.

Remove the holy trinity and what do you get?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Pink Porcupine.5461

Pink Porcupine.5461

Honestly, the worst part about the trinity was the fact that you couldn’t transition roles without rerolling. The class chokepoint for end-game was frustrating as hell.

Guild Wars 2 differs in that every class can adopt every relevant role with appropriate gearing and speccing. Right now, people are sort of fixed with one set of gear so there is a general lack of players with truly flexible gear, but as time goes along, you’re going to see people with completely adaptable layouts.

Pink Porcupine.5461

You are actually better off playing WoW if you want progression raiding and the gear thrill. Anet is very deliberate about stabilizing the item market, and unless you really like skins, you aren’t going to get a gear-thrill.

But yeah, dungeons don’t have nearly enough gimmicks to resemble the progression raiding experience. That’s it though. The first iteration of a lot of games had really uninspiring boss fights though, and to expect a game with a largely different take on combat and roles to have magically engaging fights is a starry-eyed expectation.

In regards to critique, however, all I got was complaints about how fights aren’t fun enough, but no meaningful mental-sketches on how to make a fun one.

Community opinion on the PvE endgame

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Pink Porcupine.5461

Pink Porcupine.5461

GW2’s endgame doesn’t even look to satisfy progression raiders. If you liked that, you are seriously better off resubbing for MoP because GW2 simply doesn’t cater to that design philosophy at the moment. I think it’ll come later down the line, but as it stands, this game is mostly about spontaneous cooperation with consistent rewards for doing whatever rather than trying to funnel players into a difficulty-saturated box of content.

As for this ‘getting stronger’ thing, there is a subset of that in the form of changing your itemization to try a role switch that normally wouldn’t work without substantial gearing. That’s really the best you’re getting away with, because GW2 does a good job at ensuring that content is doable without forcing the player to climb gearscore rungs.
