What if someone didn’t make clear they were selling a dungeon run in their LFG, or merged your own LFG in which you are not asking for runs, and suddenly at the end threaten you to kick you if you don’t pay, then claim you knew it was a paid run?

The dungeon runner is responsible for making sure all the players in the party are there for the service. They should be starting a run with a full party to prevent hotjoins in the middle of a run. It doesn’t matter if their LFG is misleading if they confirm with every player. If they don’t confirm that they are selling a run with each party, then they would be seen as abusing kick function and the report function. This also prevents players from pretending not to understand to scam a run.

That’s cool, but I’m just wondering why the Living World Summary wasn’t updated either. In fact the release page hasn’t been updated either. It doesn’t even list Twilight Assault on there. (Also neither does the Release/Features list.)

Because no one has updated it. Hence the “As always, the wiki is updated and populated by players for players, so if you are able to update any of the related pages further with information related to the Twilight Arbor release content, it would be very much appreciated.” in the post!

Your “Twilight Arbor explorable” link has an extra character in the URL.

Tribulation mode is pseudo hard mode

in Super Adventure Box: Back to School

Posted by: Relic.7148

Relic.7148

I have played and enjoyed the ultra-hard platformers like I Wanna Be The Guy that tribulation mode is supposedly based on.

In I Wanna Be The Guy, there are surprise deaths but you actually have a chance to avoid almost all of them if you react in time. You won’t avoid every surprise death you trigger but you will avoid many of them so it feels fair and satisfying. In tribulation mode, the invisible spikes just kill you straight out and the only counter play is repetitive trial and error.

In I Wanna Be The Guy, surprise deaths are like the comic relief between the 95% of your deaths which are due to attempting difficult jumps requiring precision and timing. Tribulation mode is the opposite; most deaths will come from the invisible surprise kill cheapness and getting to a difficult jump is the occasional relief.

That’s why I Wanna Be The Guy is challenging and enjoyable and tribulation mode is cheap frustrating garbage. Tribulation mode is an attempt at Guyesque jumping challenge that catastrophically fails to understand what makes Guy fun.

I found most of the traps hilarious, especially the spike traps stuck in the most random places, like the one ledge climbing up at the start of W1Z3 and the trap in the secret room of W1Z1. The exploding flowers are great and inching around flowers hoping not to die is fun. The fact there is a normal mode to compare to with other common gaming tropes makes it more entertaining. I think you missed the strength of IWTBTG referring to the same tropes.

Ways to improve Teq, nerf not included

in Tequatl Rising

Posted by: Relic.7148

Relic.7148

This one can apply to the whole game, but it occurred to me because of Tequatl so I’ll put it here: A new condition. It occurs when there are 25 stacks of bleed on an enemy. They all get turned into this new condition (let’s call it Gash), and Gash does 25x more damage than bleed. Then, condition users can be more useful in these fights and will be able to damage Tequatl. It effectively makes the limit on Bleed 625 stacks, much better than the current 25.

You forget that that’s only 25 stacks of bleeding, which is accrued from multiple sources, each having its own number of stacks, duration, and Condition Damage attribute to calculate damage. You can feasibly average the condition damage and duration for the damage inflicted by Gash, but then the player doesn’t see how much the stacks of Bleeding they inflict are doing to the enemy.

Hi and welcome Stefan! My question to you: how do you think APIs help improving gameplay? I’m really confused why Anet supports people creating maps which show ongoing events etc. when ingame there is intentionally no way to show these events. I can’t see how this improves the GW2 experience. Can you help me here?

This was answered before. They tested displaying active events on the map and found that displaying all the events on the map at once showed too much information and make it look cluttered. Doing so also would make it hard for players to move through the zone.

Falling into the void issue

in Super Adventure Box: Back to School

Posted by: Relic.7148

Relic.7148

One of the major spikes in difficulty for World 2 is the fact you can fall and die almost anywhere. In comparison, World 1 had very little falling hazards, apart from landing in the swamp. I would like to see a Zelda-esque mechanic where falling into the void removes half a heart and either puts you back at your last known good position or back at the checkpoint. I’d prefer the checkpoint on world 3, as getting hit by a jumping ram and only getting set a couple platforms back would cheapen the mistake. At least setting the player back to the checkpoint should be easy to implement. Falling into the void in Tribulation Mode can still kill you immediately.

Frustration and failure - Forced wait times

in Living World

Posted by: Relic.7148

Relic.7148

The Clocktower and Gauntlet are two different situations although they share the downtime between resetting. (checking says I go over some similar points as misery).

For clocktower, the goal was to have people compete against themselves and each other to complete the puzzle. Obviously there are issues when you implement it so you compete with people in the same overflow shard and the event starts at regular intervals and doesn’t end until every player in the puzzle finishes or dies. They would have to implement it differently to remove the queue for the next attempt, likely with random grouping, but wasn’t worth not being able to compete with the same people repeatedly. They did the same with Crab Toss activity, for example, except you are competing against other in a contest, rather than a time raced, which works better for the format. Anet needs a solution that will satisfy allowing people to race together in a jumping puzzle and not have excessive queue times.

They added snowballs to the Wintersday puzzle as one solution, but that’s a distraction. I would love a solo instance as a solution for the downtime. They did this with Canach’s Lair, where the player learns the mechanics in a basic setting before pushing them into the MMO version. That provides a medium between making completely solo instances for the activities against participating with other players.

For Queen’s Gauntlet, they went a completely different way, which I have reasons for criticism, many which relate to the queue and downtime. The battles can easily be an instance, they did just that for Poyaqui in Belcher’s Bluff. The reason it isn’t is so other players can watch you while they wait their turn. But they aren’t given the choice to watch you or fight, they are forced into a queue. They also don’t have a camera view, which could easily be done because this was done in Sanctum Sprint. If they really thought people would watch the fights, this was a mediocre effort and wasn’t worth the drawbacks. You are required to pay a fee to attempt like a gamble, and need to raise the stakes to get greater rewards. This isn’t a moa race however, and people gambling on their skills is guaranteed to cause issues somewhere. Time is spent acquiring the tickets, which are from activities/achievements related to the release, the goal being to attract people to Queen’s Gauntlet. The problem is, these activities are open world dynamic events that focus on the PvE crowd. This is not the same crowd that enjoys the high stakes, high skill solo play with mastery of the character. This pretty much forces people who don’t enjoy open world activities much to participate in them because the ticket was made account bound.

In addition to the time it takes to acquire the tickets, the players are forced into the queue by design, for the reason for other players to watch, the only reason. If you are defeated, you are teleported outside and require resurrecting. This relies on other people 1) being in queue waiting or 2) watching you. Both can be unreliable at best, especially when players lose interest in the Gauntlet or get distracted by the new release. Now it would make some sense to be defeated, as it will cost you time and coin to make your way back, but if you design the matches to take many attempts, this will quickly become tedious. This could’ve been completely avoided by doing like the rest of the game and putting you in downed state. That way you can participate in an activity designed to be solo by yourself without relying on others. You can’t rely on other people just because you designed the release to get people to Queen’s Gauntlet. This ends up wasting time for the people attempting the Gauntlet and people being pushed towards it without no significant benefit.

Event labels for mega world bosses

in Suggestions

Posted by: Relic.7148

Relic.7148

Use “[World Event] <Event name>” or a similar label to notate which events give a bonus chest. This would hopefully happen before the Megadestroyer is added to events that give a bonus chest. Basing bonus chests off of the NPCs instead of the events isn’t very intuitive because the mega world bosses aren’t explicitly labeled either and more focus can be done on tasks that don’t involve DPSing the boss but will still count as participation for the event.

Hey guys,

I just want to mention that we have attempted to design this dungeon in a manner that, in a way, makes it very difficult to skip much of anything. We have done extensive internal testing and the general consensus is that trying to skip most of the content ends up being more trouble than it is worth, and the fastest way through is essentially to play through the content as intended.

I know that there will still be doubters, but hopefully the work we have put in towards this goal will contribute to providing the story experience you are hoping for.

These seems completely out of place in the discussion I’m reading on the thread, but good to know?

I’m looking forward to dodge roll jumps off mushrooms. There’s a place in zone 2 you can use it to make it up a branch faster. You can’t normally make it going forward since the mushroom cuts your momentum. It’s extremely inconsistent and failing plops you in the poison water.

If that doesn’t make it into the area where you fall into a bottomless pit if you fail, I will be morbidly depressed. The next level would be stacking two jump roll mushrooms in a row.

For reference, you save about 15-17 seconds each cage using slingshot over stick. You save probably a second each time you have a 9 hit cycle with the stick. There is a safe spot on the left side of the log to shoot the slingshot at the cage in the end of world 2 so you don’t have to run up to the cage.

Things to improve

in Super Adventure Box

Posted by: Relic.7148

Relic.7148

Keep the puzzles with the maximum jump width, these jumps are quite easy with jump rolls if you have trouble making it with a normal jump. The only problem with jump rolls is you can’t use them for precise jumps, like the water jets themselves. I also love the skinny ledges, it encourages exploration and makes it a little more exciting. You need to remove ledges you can stand on by moving but can’t jump from however.

ArenaNet has already done work with the camera, it’s a problem with any jumping puzzles in the game. The camera is still a problem, it constantly readjusts itself at different distances, sometimes fixing itself when it zooms in. The bug with staying zoomed out after leaving during boss battles should be an easy fix, the camera should just reset itself after leaving a zone, just like a readjusts itself when entering a zone. I’m use to the wonky camera otherwise and don’t battle it much.

Remove the bounce from opening gates, it isn’t used to reach any hidden rooms and wasn’t very amusing when you also put objects in the way and send us crashing into branches.

I can tell you’re a keen observer because most of these critiques are landing on content that was added late in the process and didn’t get as much iteration as I would have liked. I agree that the optimal experience is to find your keys on the way to a chest, not after the fact. Although I could cite plenty of examples where this is purposefully subverted, specifically in a lot of Zelda games. But overall I agree with you.

You can purposely subvert it, which would be quite fun for going for 100% baubles, but you also have shops that sell keys, so players will buy keys from the store if they don’t find them along the way and defeat the purpose.

The bonus bauble bubbles should depend on the team score and give more points for the Queen Bee Dog, blue monkeys, and opening chests. Teams can then plan out which enemies to kill to get the maximum number of bauble bubbles in the shortest time.

New game (Stick run)

  • This assumes you are starting a new character. You have the stick, three hearts, 5 lives, and 0 baubles.
  • Collecting the Heart Vessel will invalidate the character since you can’t lock any hearts you’ve unlocked. The reason this is important is that you would normally die after three hearts of damage, food will heal more, and death abuse gives you full hearts.
  • Players cannot use any other skills.

New game+

  • Players have access to all skills.
  • Players can start with however many hearts, lives, and baubles they wish.

Individual levels

  • Rules for stick only and new game+ apply for individual levels.

Timing

  • Time starts when player gains control of the character.
  • Time stops when health bar of King Toad disappears and he begins his death animation.
  • For individual runs, time stops once the Cage health disappears and the countdown timer starts. On rapids, timer stops when the screen goes completely black.

  4. The green and blue rupees were erroneously colored.
  5. Turtles are actually self-contained drum sets and make nice billboards.
  6. Monkeys throwing coconuts is much worse than barrels.
  7. How much I hate fall damage. I almost cry when I fall 10 feet and don’t die.
  8. Don’t talk to or approach Mysterious Strangers.
  9. How to turn my music slider on, I played hours before realizing there was an addictive 8 bit track.
  10. How much I was desperately hoping for content I could work towards and simply enjoy playing, exploring, and repeating, like my experience getting world completion and doing jumping puzzles.
