What's gonna happen to Jormag's minions?

@Slowpoke: In order of comments:

  1. Different from the Dragonspawn, but not different from other icebrood champions or Jormag by all known accounts.

What other Icebrood Champions? The minions are all linked to Jormag. Jormag uses its champions to control others, they couldn’t do it without Jormag.

  1. And Mordremoth was greater than Jormag, not equal. Jormag’s directions are primarily to its champions when they are present, just as Primordus, Zhaitan, and Kralkatorrik do.

How? Jormag could reach others’ mind and corrupt them. Mordremoth could only access its creation.

  1. You have no support to say that about Kralkatorrik. The Elder Dragons actually do wake up similarly – the major difference is whether or not they had a herald champion to facilitate their awakening (Jormag and Mordremoth did, Zhaitan and the DSD likely did, Primordus did until we killed it pushing him back 50 years, and Kralkatorrik didn’t pushing him back 50 years) And again, Mordremoth is a one of a kind example due to his domain of mind, which Jormag does not have.

if Kralkatorrik could detect Glint breaking away with it, it would have killed her right way.

Mordremoth couldn’t corrupt humans and other beings, it could only access the mind of its own creation to actually “restore” its connection with them.

  1. Drakkar wasn’t the same as the Dragonspawn. It was only able to telepathically link to Svanir because Svanir created the link and channeled Jormag’s power into him. The Dragonspawn did not require others to create a link, it was able to create one itself.

No, Drakkar was used by Jormag to establish the connection. Only Jormag wasn’t that strong at the time.

Slowpokeking.8720

This is false. We see the destroyers go into disarray due to the loss of telepathic link to them from the Great Destroyer in the end of Eye o the North, and in the personal story the Pale Tree outright tell us that Zhaitan and risen have a telepathic link albeit not in that phrasing.

It’s not the same type of link.

The Great Destroyer operate on its own instead of being its master’s toon. Zhaitan was similar.

Mordremoth was best at the telepathic commands, being able to micromanage it for each individual minion unlike the other Elder Dragons who could only give large commands to many of their forces (thus requiring champions for “interpretation”), but all six Elder Dragons seem fully capable of using telepathic commands in their minion-master hive mind.

Mordemoth was a good example, the Mordrem was linked to itself, not its champions, we don’t see the Sylvari turn to it when Shadow of the Dragon attacked or they stay close to the other champions like the Vinewrath.

We also see Kralkatorrik telepathically commanding his minions during Edge of Destiny, and of course we know Mordremoth does the same.

Unlike Jormag, Kralkatorrik couldn’t detect Glint’s betrayal right after her broke the link.

Elder Dragons works differently, Mordremoth was a good example that it doesn’t use the champions to keep the link.

]Largely because they were not so overwhelmed in those other fights, perhaps also because the Dragonspawn was the one using mesmer magic and not all icebrood, and perhaps also because of running out of that mcguffin gray power crystal powder.

The Dragonspawn was definitely unique in its telepathic abilities, even among icebrood, as we clearly see it never being done by other icebrood champions.

Drakkar was also the same, it doesn’t have its own power to connect with others’ mind. It requires Jormag’s attention.

Here, Drakkar was just a tool for Jormag to extend its mind. Unlike other dragons, they are linked to Jormag. We can see with the arrow cut off the Dragonspawn’s connection with its Icebrood, they followed Jormag’s command and attacked the Dragonspawn rather than collapse on their own.

Zhaitan was awake for only 100 years, and even 10 years after a major war against risen forces and the death of Zhaitan, Orr is still mired with risen.

Jormag was awake for 150 years years, had minions being created by Drakkar for 100 years before that, and there’s been no major war effort against icebrood.

Every Elder Dragon uses telepathic links to control its minions, but champions are used both when awake and asleep to act as routers of sorts. So long as champions remain alive and active, icebrood will remain organized just as risen still are (though they almost aren’t it seems).

No, other dragons use different ways to control their minions. We don’t see EoD or any team use the same tactic on other dragon champions like they did to the Dragonspawn.

Drakkar was just a tool, it was Jormag using it to contact others. Without Jormag, it’s not gonna happen.

What's gonna happen to Jormag's minions?

in Lore

Posted by: Slowpokeking.8720

Slowpokeking.8720

Not necessarily. Primordus being asleep didn’t make the Great Destroyer incapable. And as long as Jormag has been awake, we can assume that he has quite a few champions about that could be keeping his minions active. I mean, Zhaitan is dead, and yet with the new story we see that the Risen are still doing their thing 5 years later.

Neither Primodrus nor Zhaitan use the same telepathic link to control their minions.

Even its champion, Drakkar, require Jormag’s own power and mind to contact other norn.

What's gonna happen to Jormag's minions?

in Lore

Posted by: Slowpokeking.8720

Slowpokeking.8720

We assume that Jormag went to sleep, if it’s true, shouldn’t the Norn start to take back their land? Jormag uses a telepathic link to control its minions, with it going to sleep, wouldn’t it crack the link system?

Prophecies ended with one long mission though? It didnt separate as you suggest. It also felt the most epic of all, except maybe Nightfall since that was a God. The Great destroyer was a big anti climax for being so short

First time: epic. Second and subsequent times: tedious. Lots of trash mob fights that ultimately didn’t matter.

I preferred how it was in Factions & Nightfall: the penultimate mission was long; the final fight was short (win or lose).

Prophecies ending made a bit sense, the Lich wasn’t super powerful on strength, but intelligence. What made him menacing to the world was the Titan army under his control. It’s definitely not the case on the dragons though.

For me, instances should tell their own story and that includes building into the boss. The last episode and the Caudecus one are amongst my favourite fights, because of the build up, the time investment, tne story being told throughout. If it was just the respective boss, it would have been good, but missing so much.

Breaking them into two, breaks the flow of immersion for me and just waters it down.

Each to their own, but this is a direction I want to see Anet continue to get right.

It was sharply complained and was one of the worst final episode of the LS3. A fight that I would never try to do it again. Bad example here.

The story being separated to 2 missions got nothing to do with good or bad story telling at all. Ok you defeated the minions and now continue your step to the final showdown against the boss. How does it break out? It would surely break out if the length/difficulty combined was too hard that made a lot of players can’t finish it, or got to do the whole thing all over again if they dc.

The Great Destroyer was one of the easiesr eotn missions, i remember the complaints about it being anticlimatic at the time. And that is without the cheesy 10 second pain inverter kill tactic

As a very unskilled player, I am favour of longer end missions to encapsulate the epic feel. I’m not against maybe checkpoints, but I loved the mordy instance and the build into Zhaitan felt like the right way to build into the fight.

Having said that, Im not completely against your suggestion, even though I prefer the current way, it is just that the comparison to the way GW1 did things doesnt really hold up.

It’s not easier, just shorter. None of the EotN missions are really hard especially since you can rez in most of them.

What’s the difference between 2 separate missions and 1 long mission? Won’t it be anticlimactic if you have to spend most of the effort on trash mobs/mini bosses which you already fought before and the final boss was easy compare to them? Or the final boss was very annoying thus making the whole mission insanely long and very painful if you got to do it all over again if you dc? Mordremoth fight could cost like 20 mins, and imagine if there are tons of trash mobs/mini bosses before him. Imagine if you wipe a few times. If they separate the two, they could make the boss fight longer and harder than one single mission to avoid it for being too long/too hard for casual players to finish.

As a casual player, I certainly want the final fight to focus on the boss himself rather than having to kill the same trash mobs I’ve killed before, that’s exactly how I feel when I was doing the Zhaitan mission. Champion undead? Mouth of Zhaitan? Undead drakes? I’ve fought them before, why do I have to waste the effort all over again and left little time to fight Zhaitan itself? As for Mordremoth, it was so long and boring(also buggy), and before that you got to spend at least 15 mins to finish the previous mobs.

But Abaddon and the Great Destroyer were way too easy versus the previous mission, so nothing really changed except separating them. The difficulty wasnt upped in compensate.

No, the Great Destroyer was not easier than the previous mission, just shorter.

Single boss mission means Anet could make the boss harder compare to one long mission, since story mission was to let everyone be able to complete it rather than a challenge for the elite/skilled players.

Yes, and the Lich fight was too easy compare to the Titan fights. If it was 2 missions they could have made the lich a lot tougher. Still, it works because the Lich was menacing mostly due to his intelligence and the control over the Titans, but that doesn’t work on the dragons.

After that they’ve learned the lesson.

I actually think the opposite, the lenghtier/harder the last mission, the better, it felt like a real conclusion to the story.

I won’t deny though, that the fight with Zaithan was crap, you really didn’t interact with him besides spamming the cannons.

For an elder dragon, a being who is immensely powerful, it really felt anticlimatic just watching him soar every now and then and do nothing but get in the way of your lasers.

Maybe if anet made the fight so that Zaithan grapples the ship and you had to hit his face/arms to repel him or the ship would slowly drift down and crash (restart from a point after that) or that sort of thing, would’ve been awesome. But yeah, Not enoUgH ResOurCes™ amirite?

Since STORY MISSION was designed for EVERYONE to be able to finish it. It’s not a wise idea to make it too long and too hard, especially since you can’t save the progress. The old GW way was the best, separate the long minions/lieutenants and the final boss fight to two different missions. The boss fight could be tough but people only have to focus on them.

Slowpokeking.8720

Just like in GW1 starting from Factions, the last story mission is just a single boss encounter. So players could focus on the boss without having to spend too much time on previous mobs.

In GW2 the last story chapter was way too long and we have to spend most of the time to fight dragon minions, because too much effort was wasted on them, the Zhaitan fight wasn’t designed well.

Mordremoth was not too much different, you got trash mobs+ 2 mini boss encounters before Mordremoth, which also got a long fight. It makes the overall fight way too long if you wipe.

Can’t we have a single boss encounter for the last story mission in the future?

Slowpokeking.8720

the problem in this case is that most dragon minions are perverted versions of their originals. Some still look a lot like their blueprint, others don’t look like them at all, anymore. If you saw Faolain’s second form, would you still have guessed she was ever a sylvari (if you didn’t know her prior form). So I think there are wurms that became dragon minions, but they might not look like normal wurms anymore.

Faolain was dragon creation like all the Sylvari.

Slowpokeking.8720

Mordrem Maws, Spitfires, and Breachers are all potentially mordrem versions of wurms.

That said, the Jungle Wurms are hinted pretty heavily at also being mordrem:

  • Wychmire Swamp is a source of Summoned Husks not tied to the Nightmare Court, and the “source of darkness” there was the Great Jungle Wurm.
  • The jungle wurms trained by Nightmare Court are called “Nightmare Vines” for some unstated reason.
  • The Triple-headed Great Jungle Wurm’s heads drops the same kind of loot bag as Season 2 mordrem.
  • There were no wurms in GW1 in the Maguuma; the only non-Jungle Wurms in the Maguuma in GW2 were brought by the ogres in their crashed airship or are solely in Unswept Uplands of Dry Top (possibly brought by Zephyrites?). The Jungle Wurms also mysteriously disappear (none in Wastes or Heart of Maguuma) once Mordremoth wakes up.

My theory is that they’re the wurm variant of sylvari, perhaps born from another one of the seeds of the cave like Malyck.

Regarding Destroyers: Like Mordrem and unlike Branded, Icebrood, and Risen, Destroyers are not corrupted creatures but copies of creatures, so the lack of Destroyer Wurms is because Primordus decided they weren’t worth copying.

Regarding Icebrood Wurms (or Branded/Risen Wurms):

Why don’t we see risen skritt, dredge, largos and centaurs despite there being very obviously close to risen territory? Why no icebrood grawl or jotun?

The simple answer is that ArenaNet didn’t make the models. The reason could be due to time, or it could be due to worth versus effort. In the end, they decided not to.

Wurms do not “gain elemental power” through the Elder Dragons’ territory either – they simply are highly adaptable and will match their environment. For those in icy areas, this means that their skin gains an ice-like (but very much not ice) appearance while they become fatter for insulating blubber; for hot environments, they change the most and we see them with burning insides (perhaps due to the fact that they’re tunneling through magma), but they don’t show any elemental tendencies beyond being able to survive in the most extreme of environments and adapting their appearance to blend in.

The jungle wurms are not mordrem, they just ate some Mordrem Husk. Mordrem Spitfire/Breachers might be inspired by them, but they are not clone copies as well.

There are also wurms in Ascalon, but we don’t see Branded Wurms as well. No Risen Wurm, too.

Honestly, Wurm Destroyers would be very dangerous and useful to the dragon since they move underground.

I know you are not going to change the encounters significantly, but I hope you consider at least one change to them: addressing the ‘penalty box’.

Getting kicked out and only being able to wait is not fun at all, but the fights are too hectic to be able to revive anyone during them. I wonder if it’ll be possible to have separate rooms where defeated players are sent instead being sent to the box, and there they can do something to return to the fight.

By all means, that’s how this instance and this fight encounter should work – and the current way it works is why I didn’t bothered finishing HoT story on my other 10 characters; I finished it 3 times and in two encounters I was sent to the punishment box from where I couldn’t do anything but cheer up people who were with me and who were working for me and because of that, I felt awful.

Just remove the box in non challenge mode, it’s totally unnecessary.

As long as those defiance and healthbars bars stop being scaled for 20-30 people instead 5, and enemies don’t stay invulnerable after completing the mechanics, I’ll be happy enough.

Last 3 times that I attempted the challenge mode people just left after not being able to take 5% of Garn’s and Eir’s defiance with their stronger CC-focused builds, and the fire applied by her attacks ticked as if it was designed before Burning was made a stacking condition.
It was kind of insane even for a challenge mode.

Getting kicked out and only being able to wait is not fun at all, but the fights are too hectic to be able to revive anyone during them.

I wonder if it’ll be possible to give players something else to do in the meantime.

  • For example, having separate rooms where defeated players are sent instead being sent to the box, and there they can do something to return to the fight.
    • As long as one player endures against the boss, the rest would be able to return if they manage to complete the room. If they don’t, they just keep respawning at the start of a different random room until they complete it, until the boss is defeated, or until the last party member fighting the boss is defeated too.
    • And if the last player fighting the boss is defeated, the fights in the rooms are cancelled and it’s then when the party is sent together to the penalty box to reset.
    • I wonder if it’ll be possible to use copies of the nightmare chambers from the Nightmare of Towers release for something like that. There’s already recorded lines and all.
  • Or it could be something like in the fight against Dhuum in GW1: Defeated players would get transformed into a ‘dream’ form, with the yellowish translucent visual effect creatures had in A Light in the Darkness, they would become invulnerable and the boss would ignore them, but the transformation would disable their traits and upgrade effects, and their skills would be replaced with a set of skills that allow them to help in the fight without dealing damage to the boss: heal allies, break defiance bars, create blocking domes, giving boons, damaging adds, etc.

There is no need for penalty box at all in non challenge mode, this story chapter was set to let everyone finish, so it shouldn’t too hard.

Also if you wipe you have to do the Mordremoth encounter all over again, which is quite painful.

The Pack Supply Network Agent might solve your problem. I’ve not done it in a long while, as I quit when I got what I needed, several recipes costing 10’s of gold each.

I don’t even know if it works, but it brought back recipes that were no longer available in game, so grew to high cost as the few owners let go of them for big money.

It’s a daily grind until you get what you want, and you’ll get several more you didn’t want but now have along the way.

This specific recipe is not available from the pact supply agents (though I suspect it maybe should be), which is why the rarity. The melandru one is, and look at the price there … hint: approximately zero.
