I have one toon and have looked at everything in both my bank and inventory, and this thing STILL keeps coming up! Can someone please help me out? Just started playing again after a year away and this is driving me insane…
Awesome, thanks so much for the info guys.
Also, a big issue used to be that kits weren’t effected by weapon sigils, but it looks like that has changed somehow (at least for swaps maybe)- can someone clarify what they did to alter this?
Grenades are still the best kit, and the traits for them are in the Power line which is best for PvE. (Cond builds get swamped in large events and one cond build/party is enough in dungeons.)
Not sure of a best build, but good places to start would be :
- Grenades, Bombs (good dps on PvE mobs that don’t know to run form bombs) and Med Kit or Healing Turret (for quick party healing: drop, overcharge, explode) are good combinations.
- Grenades/Bomb Kit (depending on circumstance) and elixirs with 30 into Alchemy for Might stacking (HGH).
Interesting, thanks man! HGH was terrible back when I used to play, and I’ve seen people referring to it as good in what I’ve read so far, so I was confused… lol. I’ll definitely look into what some of the builds using these look like.
There is no “Best build”. The best is the one that suits you well. I recommend you go have fun and explore, and when you have questions about certain things you don’t understand come back and ask.
If you just want to build your own and just follow other people’s patents, the forum is full of build threads.
Yeah I get all that, and agree; I generally like to make my own and did so originally, I’m just curious where the meta is at currently for Engi’s and what kind of builds are working the best so I have somewhere to start. I know turrets were terrible in my day, for instance, and for all I know they are the greatest kitten around now… Just wanted to get a lay of the land. Do you have a specific player that you know has reliable builds or a certain thread that is good? (I find that about 50% of the builds in forums like these are kinda bad/theoretical, so I’m just trying to avoid those!)
Sweet, thanks! Guardians were already seeming to be pretty preferred when I was around back in the day, so I guess not too much has changed there. The thing that always interested me was that it seemed like if you played things correctly, pretty much any class combo could clear dungeons together just because of how the game is played if the team executes well. Glad to see that seems to be the case still =)
The most efficient team setups generally only include warrior, mesmer and guardian. But that’s for very efficient speed clearing.
You can still be very fast and efficient with any setup as long as you have high dps. I personally prefer my entire team in zerker (rampager if are condition build). A tanky guardian can sometimes help when the pressure is really on, but it’s really only needed for 40+ fractals imo. As long as everyone knows their class well and plays smart, any high dps group will breeze through the regular dungeons if at least one person knows the dungeon. I recommend everyone visit the profession subsections of this forum and find solid dungeon dps builds. I know people like to say “cookie cutter”, but there is a reason why certain build rise to the top, they’re just better. You can still conform most builds to fit you better.
I also recommend taking Mourningcry up on his offer. If you truly want efficiency, running with a pro who is patient and can show you the mechanics of each section will set you on the right path. Feel free to add me as well. I like running with new dungeoners who want to learn efficiency, it means pug dungeons will be that much better in the future.
Don’t expect to be speed clearing instantly. When I did my first few dungeons i was like “OMG SO HARD Y SO MUCH DETH!?!”. Now I have more tokens than I can spend.
Good advice, thanks. We may take you guys up on that offer at some point, initially we’ll probably read some guides and try to figure things out on our own. Not that GW2 is very similar to things like WoW, but we are at least proficient at functioning as a unit from things like that and I am interested in really experiencing these dungeons and figuring them out adds alot of intrigue for me. Thanks again for your offer (which we may take you up on) and advice!!!
Hey guys! I haven’t played since a few months after launch, but some friends and I are coming back and going to experiment with PvE this time around. We pretty much exclusively did PvP before, so I don’t have a real good idea as to what are the best build options, or where to find them. Can anyone help me out; either give me some recommendations or direct me to a good place to find some? I recall grenade builds were very good back in the day, but not sure if that still applies today… Thanks so much for any help you guys can provide!

Hey guys, sorry for a kinda vague post, but some friends and I a recently returning to GW2 after having not played since around 2 months after launch. We have no idea what the current state of PvE is, but we are interested in doing dungeons (and potentially WvW at some point). We never got much of a feel for whether certain comps were better than others and what not, but I wanted to see if you guys could recommend some good setups or general strategies that would help us hit the ground running. I’ll probably be returning to my Engineer (which I have NO idea what is currently good with, I recall grenades were good in PvE as I left) and one of my friends will probably be picking his Necro back up as well, not sure what else we’ll have from there. Any advice you guys can provide would be extremely helpful and save me a TON of reading… Only two of us really did instances at all last time around and we we’re not terribly “efficient” at it, so some general team strategy would help immensely. Thank you so much for any help that you can provide guys!
Sttoooppppp with this friggin topic. Every day there is a new one. There a plenty of people that DON’T want this, grenades work fine as they are and if anything just need a little speed boost as they are in the air (if for nothing else than the sake of physics). Otherwise, they are fine based on how much damage they do. Practice using them and you will improve, or try something else.
Good to know the community didn’t completely die off, in case I wanna jump on and do some solo ques again. Thanks guys =)
Kudos to you OP^^, indeed there is far too much QQ, reached 2nd map with a team of 3 thieves beating even a r30 guild team lol
Lol the fact that these were the teams kinda indicates that there is in fact a problem. Not the “QQ” or anything… but c’mon now…
Haven’t played in a while because all my IRL friends went back to kittening WoW, forcing me to follow. Are que times still an issue? What is an average wait time in free tournaments?
Doesn’t matter how long it’s been. They have let down alot of people, so those people left and probably aren’t coming back. It great that some of us have patience enough to stick around, but if the better part of a games community doesn’t, then it’s bound to fail.
Depends on if they are significant enough for me to convince my friends to return from WoW after being disapointed. If not, sadly, I will be returning to that pit of sorrow as well… =(
I share your current experience. I, like many other people I’ve heard about, am the only one left of all my friends. I came in with most of my department from work and a few friends I’ve made in other gaming communities. I am all that is left.
The main problem with the friends returning hope is that, gamers are fickle. Most of my friends won’t be returning regardless of changes. When they move on, the don’t look back. I am the same way, I just tend to hang on a lot longer.
Indeed. What works in the favor of GW is the free-to-play angle. No need to reactivate accounts and such because you can just start right back up. However, that doesn’t mean all my wishful thinking will ever amount to a resurgence of my friends to the game. It really is a shame… this game is so beautiful and great in so many ways, has so much potential, but falls short in some fundamental ways that make a big difference. God kitten I am not looking at going back to those 2004 graphics and crazily inflated numbers… kitten that game.
^Agreed. PvP just needs more selection in general though. New gametypes alone would open up tons of build options.

Bunkers will be toned down as soon as conquest isn’t the ONLY PvP mode. When there isn’t a location that required one to bunker in, these specs will not be as necessary and the game will finally shine as it was meant to. I admire them for trying an objective based PvP archetype from the start, but you kinda need to stick with deathmatch to start out… it was a ton of fun in GW1. If it ain’t broke…
The biggest problem with sPvP right now is the fact that it has stagnated. Conquest has bored alot of people, and with numbers dwindling, it’s primarily just premade teams running things while anyone running alone or even a smaller group of friend is getting destroyed. Kills the casual element that this game is supposed to be all about. I really do love the game, but all of my friends a moving back to World of Warcraft because it’s simply better right now (regardless of what’s been out for how long and all that, fact is it just kinda is… which is kittening hate). What’s a guy to do but follow his friends? November update is gonna make or break my loyalty to this game, and I think alot of others are thinking the same.
This would be really awesome, but I don’t think we will be seeing additions like this for quite some time =(
A: Engineers are the first one’s you thought of with a reflect move? Have you met Guardians?
B: Clones without shatters are pointless AI clutter that do 3 damage per attack… who cares either way.
He already used mine, toolkit, and bomb kit in the combo. No room for flamethrower sir. Funny kitten though OP.
In my experience it has always worked even when they are close (the #2 that is). I think we are decent enough on the ground as it is. If there is anyone around to stall even for a second or two, we will be able to use both the pull and the explosion as interrupts (and generally even pull again). If you aren’t getting picked up by then, you aren’t going to.
Good post man. While player feedback is essential to progress the game and keep it evolving in a positive manner, people just don’t do it in a constructive and comprehensive manner most of the time. Most genuinely don’t understand how team-oriented this game is- I love pugging in structured PvP and getting groups where NO ONE on the team communicates whatsoever… why do structured if you aren’t organizing? Oh well, glad to see some people get it =)
I’ve look through a fair amount of forums and haven’t seen a definitive source, so I thought I would ask once and for all, and hope I can get a Dev response:
Are kits or are they not intended to get bonuses from sigils/weapon stats; that is, is it a bug that they don’t, or is that how it is supposed to be and things are just scaled around that fact?
It just seems like a pretty huge thing to have not been patched yet if it’s not intentional.
Not me. This was another bummer patch for Engi’s I think. I really don’t like complaining about patches, but after a bunch of fixes to underwater grenades and kitten, it’s a little disheartening that all they did was fix some wording and try to make mines viable in a different way after they were nerfed. Oh well, at least thieves don’t get 10k backstab anymore… now they just get a bunch of 8k heartseekers…………..
How would I acquire boosts?
Is there a link to the rewards for winning free tourneys?
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pvp_rewards
That’s all the stuff you will see in chests and you can click on some of the rooted text to investigate further. If you want pictures, just google “guild wars 2 ______ imgur” where _ is a weapon or armor piece you want to see all the models for.
Chests from winning tourney’s / spending glory. But I agree, I have been playing a decent amount and am still only rank 18. Wouldn’t mind seeing things move along a bit faster in the PvP rank scene.
Yeah I got about half way through this and just can’t keep reading… this game doesn’t work just based off stats. So while you may be pointing out that a SMALL fix is needed in scaling of defense vs. offense (which I’m not sure I agree with considering how absurd bunkers are right now), you are missing the big picture- this games runs off of knowing your class, working with your team, and using what you have at your disposal to escape situations. You not sharing your class/saying it doesn’t matter is just stupid because you are presenting thief as the representation for offense, and yet saying the defensive class doesn’t mean anything… clearly it does, and if you did, people could help you with ways to survive against thieves. I have it pretty down on my Engi and I have 916 toughness and would get 2 shot if I didn’t react properly…
Exactly. That’s the whole idea behind more burst builds. The damage they put out is balanced by their lack of survivability, whether it’s straight up damage or condition removal. A nice well rounded build that also works well it just the Elixir/Rifle build, where 409 gives you plenty of condition removal and you have higher vitality, but your damage takes a major hit. In this game, it is all about your role in the team you play with, so if you are just puggin’, best to be well rounded.
This is the build cilice was talking about. I run something similar with a few modifications.
http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUl0pqdH5y4F17IxoHkuzbG0D9mX/KqQ+B;TsAg0Cno4ywlgLLXOukcNo4QxMCA
Yeah people really need to stop asking for this. Grenades are fine the way they are- practice using them in combat/on moving targets and you’ll do much better.
I run something similar, but I think ya need at least 1 stun break in sPvP, so I use either Elixir S or Goggles instead of Slick Shoes. Goggles add another solid toolbelt skill that properly triggers the static discharge, and Elixir S is just great for getting away OR guaranteeing stomps. Also, I don’t really find Adrenal Implant that helpful (and find it bullkitten that it’s a 5-point minor trait for rangers and a 30-point major trait for engis) so I throw 10 in explosives for Incendiary Powder.
I very much agree with Rifle Jump- the pause makes it a pain in the kitten when you are fighting anyone who knows what they are doing because it’s like the game triggering a slow motion “now-is-when-you-dodge” moment for them. Either get rid of the pause or increase the radius or something.
The rest I kinda disagree with. Magnet just needs a shorter cooldown in general, Elixir X needs a complete overhaul (randomness on elixir tosses is annoying enough, a random elite is just useless), Barrage is fine how it is in my opinion, and the wrong direction thing isn’t full cooldowns in my experience, just short stuff that kinda works like a punishment for missing.
That’s my take.
I think the magnet skill (and box of nails for that matter) needs a shorter cast time. The tool kit is only really viable for gadget burst rifle builds and 4-kit bunker builds for an extra block. Reducing cast times on some of these skills will go a long way in helping this kit have a purpose outside those roles, and creates a pretty nice 5-2-3 combo.
Here is a large selection. Choose your own destiny =P
Personal Battering Ram, and here is the link:

I would argue that it is better to run the Infused Precision trait over Rifled Barrels when using Invigorating Speed, but arguments can be made either way. Adrenal Implant is also bugged from what I hear, so I would either switch that to Speedy Gadgets or switch to 10 in explosives for Incendiary Powder. Just some suggestions =).
If you aren’t having fun with PvP, you just aren’t doing it right. Sure, there are still bugs, with yeah there are more with some classes than others, but they can always be overcome or avoided. How many times have you lost a match where all of your scores are more than those of the other team, and yet they reach 500 faster? This game is all about strategy.
Progression is for PvE. Testing your skill with your class is what PvP is for. If you want a sense of progress while PvPing, WvW should fit the bill. As someone that plays sparingly and loves PvPing with friends who are equally busy with life, the fact that we can walk onto the PvP scene and know that the only advantage anyone has over me is based on how well we know our builds, our classes, and what everyone else is capable of is fantastic is every way. Looking forward to new aesthetics is good enough for me, and seems to be good enough for plenty of others. Thank you, ANet, for finally finding a way to truly succeed at making an MMO capable of catering to casual players and frequent players alike.
Bump? Or are you guys just looking for rant-forums about the rifle’s range and how bad some kits are? =P
Engineers don't compare to other classes in terms in Defense

I’ve gotta disagree. Engi’s have a ton of survivability. If you are running a damage build, you can run Elixir R for self rez/stun break or Elixir S for stunbreak/stomp confirm/rez assistance, both of which ALSO add a good deal of support. Additionally, Engineers are one of the best bunker professions in the game, making use of the shield, toolkit, and a host of CC from kits/gadgets. One example is the 4-Kit build shown below:
I was really diggin the video posted by Obeet (forum below) showing off some of his WvW exploits.
Thought it would be a good time to try to bring the community together and gather some of the best videos we have come across while researching for build and just seeing what other people are doing with the class. Here are the two builds that influenced my Bunker and Burst builds the most.
4-Kit Bunker by TheTOPvP:

Rifle Gadget Burst by Teldo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6SC2iACEeA&list=UUXOD8AuOQxlDD8ORiiXrMkw&index=5&feature=plcp
Note: This build has been somewhat altered to use PBR instead of Elixir S (by Teldo), which adds more burst and CC at the cost of the defensive addition and stomp guarantees that come with Elixir S.
So these are a couple of my favorites. How about you guys? Anything you have made or found that are good examples of what Engineers are capable of or just plain fun to watch? Let’s see what you got!
I was under the impression that it has been bugged in that it makes you immune to newly applied conditions after the point it is triggered but doesn’t alleviate conditions you already had. No?
Trait Q: can we really achieve 50% tool belt recharge rate?
in Engineer

One important this to note is that on top of the 20% gadget recharge (10 pt trait), the 15 point minor trait in Tools recharges your toolbelt skills at 25% health. This is REALLY good with the medkit (recharges the burst heal), but is also great with burst gadget builds (using PBR/Rifle Turret shot/Grenade Barrage/Throw Wrench/Goggle analysis thing/etc.), as all of your burst refreshes at 25% health and you can hit them with a whole new wave. Pretty powerful trait. Now if only they would make the 50% endurance regen a minor trait since its a 5 point minor for rangers and a 30 POINT MAJOR for us…

Power wrench is for tool kit skills (as in the kit itself) not toolBELT skills. Easy mistake to make- I think I considered this at some point haha.
@arrownin- Alot of people like the way the rifle is currently for the engineer, including myself. It is an awesome mix of CC with close range, so fights are all about you keeping people at a distance if you don’t want them close, or if they are ranged, disabling them as much as possible and getting in close. Let’s you be seriously adaptive. Elixir builds sound like what you are looking for because they really focus on you using the rifle and the elixirs are just to amp up your damage/ help with survive-ability. In the end, it’s your call, but if you want something that just sits back and shoots, warrior or ranger might be better off for you because they are build alot me for just sitting back and blasting. If you want something dynamic and adaptive, I would just watch some gameplay videos and get a better feel for how people are using the rifle. To help with your decision, here are some other threads that go over this topic (engi vs warrior rifles):

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Rifle-or-Shotgun/first#post304675
There are alot of viable rifle/elixir and rifle gadget builds that are focused on the rifle and use gadgets on PBR/toolkit/rifle turret/etc for extra burst and Elixir B and U for big increases to damage output. I posted a pretty solid rifle/gadget in a previous topic that you can look up (which I use in sPvP), and the rifle elixir builds are around on here too. What type of play are you looking to use it for (PvP, WvW, PvE, everything)?
Turrets and Dungeons: Is there some way to make Turrets tougher?
in Engineer
Posted by: StevoSupremo.4037
On a side-note, it’d be really nice if turrets were affected by their user’s stats instead of just their level. At least, I get the impression they’re only affected by level; I know I’ve seen it stated in a few threads that Healing Turret doesn’t scale with Healing Power, but that’s seemingly the only one people have noticed a lack of difference with.
Especially because Mesmer clones/illusions DO indeed stack with their stats (because they are technically spells not pets), thus contributing the how OP they are. Correct me if I’m wrong…
