Guild Wars helped me keep fighting irl. TY!

I posted early this year about how I’ve been fighting cancer; how I had extensive surgery, and how this game and the friends I made here keep going.

The cancer came back. I am starting chemo in a few weeks; it was delayed for months because of insurance issues, but finally, it’s going to happen.

I appreciate ANET sticking to the release schedule, even if some systems aren’t quite finished, because that means I still will get to enjoy some of HoT, whatever happens. I was too sick to play in the betas, but my treatment and pain management has improved, so now I can log in for a few hours each week.

So thank you for not delaying things.

Some people think that posts like this are silly or pointless, that really sick people should focus on bigger things. We ARE. But it’s also necessary to keep hold of small things, too. For a decade, I was homebound, partly because of this cancer. Guild Wars was a way for me to experience sunny skies and do things and run around and make friends again, even if it was just virtual. It played a huge part in me coping with the isolation until I got well enough to start having a real life again. It will always be important to me.

So, now that I’m getting ready for the next step in my fight, I am glad that ANET will let me, when I am able, to have new small, make-believe, but very precious adventures in Tyria.

Thank you.

To Taimi's Creators

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

While I like Taimi, I feel her disability is tacked on. If Roxx lost an arm and was then told she was unfit for the warband – that would be a significant plotline involving disability.

Not all disability has to be milked for some tragic angst. It’s not ‘tacked on’, she’s just like that. That’s how disability is for most people— they’re born like that. It just happens and folks have to figure out how to deal with that.

I was born with several medical conditions, and one of them is a joint and connective tissue disorder. Walking was always excruciating. My legs didn’t ‘work right’ either. Does that mean my disability was ‘tacked on’?

At one point I was hit by a car, and the damage was made worse by my condition, so I had to have surgery on my leg so I could walk again (but only for a few years more because of the degeneration in my joints). Does that make it not tacked on?

Eventually I broke my back because of that condition. But until that, I always had severe back problems. Does that mean it’s not tacked on once a catastrophe happens?

Regarding brainiacs and disability: one, most asura are geniuses, but two, when you are physically disabled, it often does make you have to turn to other ways to excel. For my quad sweetie, it’s art, writing, and music. For me, it’s art, singing, history, etc. Both of us are readers and both of us are used to using our minds to solve complicated issues and challenges. Why? Because when you are physically disabled, you MUST learn to think around corners and solve problems, because the world is built for able-bodied people. It forces you to develop ingenuity and creativity.

So I approve of the way that ANet handled this. Her legs just happen to not work right. If you require pathos around a disability, that’s enough.

Thank you, ANet.

Let us wear outfits + regular helms! :3

This was possible in guild wars, and it allowed us to still keep some customisability whilst wearing an outfit overlay. I know I’m not the only one who would buy a lot more outfits if I knew my character could still wear his glasses, tophats, etc.

That new Count outfit would look fantastic with a monocle, you know?

Megaservers and RP

To maximize your odds of running into other RP players more often, you’ll want to make sure you’re on the same world (generally TC and Piken are viewed as the RP worlds), and in guilds with other RP members also on that same world. For example, everyone from TC currently will be set to high priority to sort together, same thing goes with people who are all a part of the same guild (so guild up RP folks!)

We’ll continue to monitor, adapt and update the system as we go forward as well, for now I’d suggest seeing how it works once we enable the mega server system across all maps and then giving comments and feedback when you see it in action!

(edited to add Piken!)

Thank you very much for listening to our concerns!

The one issue with guilding is that there are currently 9k registered roleplayers with one site, and plenty more who never go there. Since guilds only hold 500 members, the community will still be somewhat fragmented. Many of us are (me included) also not in roleplay guilds, and count on walk-ups for most of our RP.

Is there -any- way you guys could create a roleplayer tag? I’m not requesting a server, but someone flagged as ‘rp’ would be a) findable by other roleplayers and b) could be weighted toward being punted to the same instances as other roleplayers.

It doesn’t have to be work, much less paid work. Anything will do. Throwing in the towel and saying that real life sucks so much that you might as well just escape into Tyria is doing yourself a disservice. You’re a human. You were born as a member of a species that conquered this planet and then some. We rose to the peak of the food chain by being clever and not by being strong. Physical limitations shouldn’t mean an end of a life, much less an end of ambitions. Especially not in this age.

I have a freelance job waiting on me for when I can get back to work, which is more than many can say. But I can say that it’s rough to work with a tumor crushing your internal organs, or so doped up on Oxy that your brain is fried, or going through chemo.

You can’t just get up and clean a house when you’re in that much pain, or when you’ve got limited mobility. You can’t work a job, or volunteer somewhere, or do whatever. Sometimes it takes all your energy just to put on clothes, and even then there are days where I don’t have the energy.

There are days now when I can get out of the house, but the agony that puts me in takes a lot of meds to beat. Those meds cost money. My wheelchair, my only way to get around, cost a lot of money. All the adaptive equipment and meds that the disabled and many ill folks need cost money, and the disabled are predominantly poor. But MMOs, especially those with no sub fees, are one of the cheapest entertainments there is.

You say, ‘work for validation’, but when you’re a kitten , just being able to wake up every morning, sit up, or hold a controller for a half hour is work. You are asking those who are suffering to prioritise what you, a healthy person, feel validates you.

You are not losing a life by spending most of your time in an MMO when you are disabled or ill. If that is how you can connect to the world, do things and make friends, then you are simply carving out the best life that you can. If the only life you find is valid is either work or ‘go outside’ or ‘watch tv’ or ‘have another hobby’, that’s really narrow-minded. What is inherently superior about it?

Playing MMOs saved my life. If I hadn’t been able to experience imaginary sunlight and scenery and hang out with online friends when I was so ill and light-sensitive that even a flashlight would burn my skin and make my eyes bleed and swell shut (I keep my monitor dimmed and shielded, windows blacked out, etc), I’d’ve killed myself from the isolation. That MMO was GW1 and is part of why I’m here today.

Uhh...horses?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There are horses in Tyria, but the running joke is that they are never on-camera. They show up in art, in references, in the books, in NPC chatter, but their models have not been dropped in game and it’s the case since GW1 (except for necrid horsemen). I assume this is a Monty Python reference (there are several in both games), since everyone in The Holy Grail ran around and just clacked coconuts together even though horses existed.

From what a number of folks have been able to figure, it’s the CoF p1 baddie ragers who’ve bled over into the open world and not farmers in general. If I want to farm, I stick with champ loops, where the regulars are usually a lot nicer and try to help end the event so they can make more money killing the normal champs. XD

I was diagnosed with cancer about two weeks ago: I had been feeling very sick for months and finally two Sundays ago I was ambulanced in with horrible stomach pains. What the doctors thought was a bad urinary infection turned out to be a tumor the size of a football, with one extra node elsewhere, that had engulfed my inner reproductive organs, was eating through my abdominal wall, and was crushing everything around it, particularly my bladder, stomach and intestines. A few days later, they removed it, the smaller one, the entirety of said inner reproductive organs, and part of my abdominal muscles and lining. They thought they might have to take the colon and bladder, too, but those fortunately turned out to be clean.

Giving the news to my fellow officers and guildies (The Court of Envy on TC) sucked— there was no warning, just, ‘oh hey lol, I’ve just been diagnosed with cancer, I might not be back for weeks or ever because they think it’s stage 4’. But instead of asking me to step down as an officer and in-character leader, they told me not to even worry about that, to just focus on surgery and recovery and that they would pray for me and send me good vibes.

I couldn’t log in in the game from the hospital (I returned home a few days ago but I still am not well enough to sign in), so they kept in touch with me through Skype while I typed very badly on my phone because Oxy. They asked for updates and encouraged me when I was down, and kept me updated on Living Story stuffs to cheer me up.

This whole ordeal would have been so much rougher without their friendship, and all of them are folks I have met through Guild Wars 2. Missing part (maybe all) of Wintersday sucks, but knowing that they and this wonderful game will still be there when I am a bit better has helped keep my spirits up. Hopefully the doctors got it all and that the biopsy results are good, so I can keep playing, and hanging out with my friends, for many more years. <3

Thank you so much.

(Also, if folks think this is a scam I can post a pic of the surgery wound with my user ID near it or whatever. :P)

Frostgorge Sound Farming

If you pay attention when people grumble when a champ gets killed, you find that it’s one or two people at the most, and usually others (usually folks in the same farm group) tell them to chill.

If folks are rude to you, report. On the other hand, if you are deliberately killing stuff with no other purpose than to annoy folks, you are also being rude.

But it’s a lot easier to pretend that a whole bunch of folks are bad, in order to feel like a victim or to try to punish folks further, instead of (no, anet, this is not profanity) acknowledging that it’s usually one or two people out of a large group.

OP, I hope you realise that, my posts at least (since I cannot speak for anyone else) are as bitter sounding as they are, because there is SO much potential in this game.

Honestly, the changes I agitate for are ones that would move this toward being, for me, the best game ever made.

In no way should this detract from the truth that Arenanet has made a truly great game – it’s just that there’s so much potential, and the direction they seem to be taking instead depresses me.

Anyway, that’s my $0.02 – were this a BAD game, I wouldn’t be waiting for improvements, I’d be gone.

You should never play a game for what it COULD or SHOULD be, because you will always be disappointed: because you are not one of the designers, you will never have the degree of input that you wish you had.

You should buy and play a game for what it is. If you do, you should be more satisfied than not.

GW2 Heroes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sylv.5324

Sylv.5324

I and my roomie liked heroes in GW1, specifically as an alternative to ’that’s what LFG is for’. Pugs are often toxic, and with the current ‘zerk or gtfo’ meta (even though I usually run zerk in dungeons, I don’t like how people who don’t are treated) attitude that a lot of folks have, it is more pleasant to dungeon with people you know.

This isn’t as much of a problem in WvW and open-world, where folks are usually a lot more friendly. But as soon as you get strangers into a dungeon, there’s always those folks who want to crap on the group. Heroes avoids this completely.

I and my roomie played healers in GW1, and soon got tired of people doing stupid stuff and expecting healers to save them; ‘I was watching TV, you should have been doing your job!’ was part of a rant thrown at me once, when dudebro just stood there while being mowed down by mobs. So we just started running stuff with heroes and henches. Dungeon players are the same no matter what game one goes to.

People say heroes ruined GW1, but they didn’t. Bad attitudes from other players did, and unlike WoW, ANet responded by allowing people who wanted to instance in peace to do so.

It really comes down to greed. It always comes down to “moremoremore” these days, doesn’t it? More points. More gold. More skins. Apparently the unique titles and skins that were already offered as HoM rewards weren’t enough to please people. They were clearly unable to enjoy the game on its own merits and want more. That strikes me as somewhat sad.

You’re taking some lengths yourself.

We didn’t ask for more points on pain of hating the game. We got a pleasant surprise when we logged in, because ANet decided to give us more points. I was enjoying the game just fine.

Now, you and your buddies want to take that away, and are saying it’s because we demanded things. We didn’t demand this.

You guys, however, are demanding that this be changed. You guys are the ones raging and twisting ANet giving us a gift into us demanding that we get more points. We GOT more points and YOU are raging about it.

I’m legally blind. I navigate dungeons, I PvP, I do plenty of stuff. One thing which I struggle at, however, is jumping puzzles. Oh, give me a few days and I might master it— but I might miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss and miss that very same jump that everyone else gets, no problem.

Sad thing is, *I*am a mesmer. So it’s even worse when I fail, because the attitude is, ‘you suck’, because a mesmers’ job now is to portal folks over stuff they don’t want to do. (That cof path with the boulders is a good example— everyone makes the blind mesmer do it to portal them over while they hang back, when it would be just as easy to one, two, three, pause, four, five, done.)

So I take the darn portal, and I stick around to portal other folks. There’s probably someone in that group that has sight or motor problems, too.

If that means I don’t deserve the achievement, well, I work harder most of the time than you do to do the same content, and I don’t complain in the forums that brochachos have this game on easymode.

I don’t see how an RP flag can be viewed as favoritism. As it stands, there are in-game methods of tracking all other player activity EXCEPT for RP, because it doesn’t involve actual gameplay mechanics. All the flag would do is put us in line with everyone else.

Yep. WvW has its own maps, pvp has its lobby, pve is everywhere, but roleplayers have no way to ID each other or be flagged for going somewhere specific. And yet, we are a bigger subset of the populace than folks want to think.

Just like any game developer ignores the “minority” in the game. Honestly, a lot of the changes made to games, not just gw2 specifically, are NEVER intended with roleplayers in mind. If you cant adapt, you get left behind. That’s all there is to it. There’s always going to be groups of players that are going to remain an afterthought.

I’m sure they’d love to leave roughly 10k+ players behind, especially ones who like to buy things.

This is an MMORPG, most players on this game roleplay to some degree (even if it’s choosing story options and speaking to NPCs), all folks in the actual roleplay community do is pretty much act like everyone’s an NPC. We know this isn’t real life, that’s why it’s called role playing.

Also, there’s around 10k of us and we have wallets and like to spend money. We also like to WvW and PvE and even PvP, which is why our servers are active and strong.

Also, something that you may not be aware of is that many roleplayers are disabled. Some of us are online a lot because we have mobility issues or illnesses that make it difficult for us to have active social lives outside the home. I, for example, am a shut-in with a life-threatening incurable medical condition as well as being in recovery from a broken back.

Please consider allowing the stuff on the left to be dragged to the right side, too; if I could, I would love to swap my minimap for my party window.

I am legally blind and I can’t see the right side of my screen very well, so if I want to navigate, I have to look either at the landscape OR the minimap, but I can’t view both! This causes a lot of headaches because I have to crane my head.

Guild Wars 1 let us move the minimap and I would really appreciate it if GW2 allowed us to do the same. It would make things much more accessible to those of us with vision problems.

An option I’d really like to see is smart ground targeting when targeting areas that are out of range.

Like if I use a 900 range teleport, but I cast it at 1000 range, then it still casts at it’s maximum 900 range in the direction of where I tried to cast it. Instead, right now it just fails until you target within range, which usually means you’ll waste like 100 range.

This would be a huge QOL change.

THIS IS IT…

I’ve supported the development of gw2 since 2007! Way before the hype and even the dragon logo.

I’ve told everyone I have known about this “awesome upcoming game” in a bunch of other mmo’s from 2007-2012 release. These mmo’s included CoH (rip ), Launch of Aion-2012 Aion, and many others.

To me, these rewards weren’t worth it, but I could care less.

I would gladly trade these AP for other skins like my Rainbow Phoenix or my mini Kunnavang and my Chaos Gloves

Yeah. Not only did we financially support the game, we also showed that there would be a fanbase for the second game, and we did our best to keep support for the new game despite delays that lasted /years/.

I’d love to get my Black beast of Arrrgh back, too. I’d take him over 500 cheevo points, though I appreciate those points.

Real underlying problem of GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Sylv.5324

Sylv.5324

I think that ANet’s real problem is that a lot of people have gone from making suggestions, or sharing opinions, to outright getting angry or scornful when they tell ANet what to do and ANet doesn’t do that (quickly enough).

If people want to tell ANet folks what to do, then maybe they need to get off their computer chairs, set down the cheetos, roll their sleeves up, apply for a job at ANet, and work their way up until they can, in fact, tell people there what to do. Until then, folks should stop acting entitled and then get enraged when their whims are not indulged.

This goes for every game, really. The harassment and know-it-all-ness of folks has gotten extreme. Even I have some issues with some of what’s been released and wish they could release other stuff sooner (really a lot of GW1 features that I feel should have made it into this one— the ones that have are great), but sharing that doesn’t mean I need to get all nasty about it.

People are really invested in GW2 failing. ‘Oh, this game is small!’ It isn’t. ’It’s dying!’ It’s not. ‘It would be successful if they only followed my advice!’ They are already successful. ‘Oh but I love the game—’ No. You don’t treat things you love like crap and you don’t treat the people behind them like crap. That’s just basic human courtesy and I don’t know why it’s gotten trendy to nowadays act like e-thugs.

tl;dr – OP and the community in general these last few years is part of the problem. ANet is not perfect, their product is not perfect, but no game is and no game ever will be. Suggest what you think might help in a polite manner, and if they continue to not create the product you like, vote with your wallet.

This was a major reason WHY I rolled sylvari, to show support for NCSoft’s decision to go there.

Extremely largehuge since culling was removed. I remember taking to a dev about it, and they said they’d look into it. Q.Q

It makes it tough to RP (or coordinate non-RP stuff) when stuff is being sent from halfway across the map, one has no idea who’s saying what or where.

That’s pretty much it. Especially when people are flipping kitten over something that isnt even in the game yet. People need to wait until the 15th to flip out after they log into the game.

We’re asking for an RP flag, pretty much. That’s not flipping kittens. We’ve also asked for walk toggles and chat bubbles in the past, and we got that, and that benefitted the rest of the players too.

Why I've changed my mind on Ascended

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sylv.5324

I stalled as well, and am waiting for a) the upcoming changes to armor stats, b) the rumors of a closet? And c) legendary armor, which I cautiously assume will allow changes of stats.

If b and c are implemented, I could change looks and stats without having to make multiple sets, buy multiple runes, etc. I already carry around four-five sets of armor with different looks and stats, making ascended armor for each build I use (I play a mesmer and heal in open-world pve, zerk in dungeons, pvt in wvw etc…) is kind of hairy.

I know, just make one for wvw, but even that might be redundant later.

Anyway, this is not so much a gripe so much as a, ‘the upcoming changes noised about made me stall’.

Add gliding to vanilla maps, please!

Even if it’s just basic stuff- no updrafts, just ‘I jump off whatever, glider pops out’. I really miss this from AION and you guys implemented it wonderfully in HoT zones.

Edit: even reddit agrees! (https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3q4jnk/hands_up_whos_died_in_the_core_tyria_world/)

I -really- miss the district system from GW1. I assume there are reasons why it can’t be implemented, but I miss it. Obviously there would still be separate regions because this is still a much bigger game, but I think that players should be able to have some choice in finding each other.

[Suggestion] Mounts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

There is a seraph saying that centaurs are made to be ride.
In GW1, there were undead who rode undead horses.
On the Hoelbrak artwork we can see a norn ridding a dolyak.
There is a model of a knight ridding a horse in the game.

Yep. It’s not against the GW universe, it’s just not been implemented yet. I’d love mounts— ground mounts with max speed comparable to the passives one can get from runes or traits.

The broom got released and it didn’t break the universe. And Asura use golems for transport all the time. Dwarves used Dolyaks, humans (well, undead ones) used horses.

Some ANET interfered with our GvG

I don’t see the problem with the employee’s behavior. GvG guys were being rude jerks and their attitude and words would have been reportable.

If the GvG folks had been polite, I might have a different opinion, but they weren’t. They started out being kittens and the employee was right in flipping his tag and calling them out.

Legendary weapons

I am pretty frustrated that the devs flailing and slowness has destroyed several of my guilds, most of whom have left for BDO. This decision just insured that those members won’t return (having seen some of them say so here and on Reddit). As it is, I have barely been on because the dungeon nerf has stalled my progress on Bolt, and I donn’t like signing in to an empty guild. I put in 8k hours until Hot dropped, and spent money on gems most months, but have nothing to do now. No armors to collect, which was most of what I did in GW1 and is my main reason for playing MMOs; no many zones to explore; story steps are locked behind masteries that I don’t have, so can’t progress there, either. RP used to fill the blank spots, but I RP elsewhere and most of the folks I know now do, too.

I’m really sad, and while I won’t uninstall GW2, I will likely go back to GW1 to grind out titles or some other MMO, because the direction the game is going in (raids and masteries) aren’t things I can really do.

Kill the Queensdale champion train.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Sylv.5324

What I really don’t like seeing is the ‘kick 80s out of Queensdale’ mentality that’s going on; ANet specifically changed things to try to keep every area worthwhile for any level range to visit, as they want people in the world. 80s belong in starter zones as much as any other levels, which is why rewards were adjusted to drop same-(or similar)level stuff, and why they get downscaled.

And yes, new players and lowbies make up a notable portion of the train and they do get their hits in.

"No Mounts" Mindset related to GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I’d love mounts, I’d spend a lot of time collecting them if they were around. Just make the speed difference minimal (so it doesn’t shorten the world) and keep it to ground ones.

The broom’s shown that they won’t break the world.

I prefer to run somewhere rather than waypoint if at all possible (I used ground mounts whenever possible in WoW, too), and watching my charcter run is so much less restful than watching him noodle around on his broom or whatever.

LMAO.

I know the faster way is to kill ambient critters and I’ve been doing some of that, but yeah. Target, PAUSE, SA-WING, PAUSE, SA-WING, PAUSE, do a little jig, oh hmm, right, I should cast now, SWING! Oh, a clone. I could’ve generated six by now.

Ascended or Excluded?

I’ve ignored fractals for now, as the stat difference presently has a minimal impact in WvW and PvE outside fractals, and those pieces can’t be used in sPvP.

They will seed that stuff through the rest of the world, including WvW, so I’m willing to wait as it’s only a few pieces so far.
