Isn’t Direct3D a Microsoft only property? Meaning something else would be running on iOS, Android, PS, Nintendo, Mac OS, Linux-distributions, and so on.

They are making an operating system designed for the living room like operating systems on the other consoles. Other manufactures will build these consoles based on Steam OS. When these consoles is build, the manufactures will not add hardware that is not supported in Linux. This hardware will probably be available for anyone that wants to make their own computer as well.

And there might be specific GPUs that is recommended for Steam OS, but the chain effect might be that nVidia and AMD will add more focus to their full range of GPUs. It seems already that AMD and nVidia have started focusing on better driver support for Linux in general. Since Steam OS is installable on any PC, and also, games that works on Steam OS will work in Steam Linux client, there might be a bigger mix of OSs in the computer gaming community.

There are many factors for why GPU providers would want to reach out to other platforms, Valve being an important one. Valve is a gaming company, they will probably have more influence that Sun/Oracle considering optimizing graphical performance is very important in video gaming. And Valve has probably not decided this over night without watching the Linux community on Steam, as well as being in contact with nVidia and AMD. They are also releasing a new solution for GPU providers to sell their products to the console market in a new way.

But the fact that nVidia has lost a very huge deal to AMD in China because of the lack of documentation and open driver support (they have now released a lot of documentation recently btw), and both Linus and many in the Linux community’s anger towards nVidia, as well as every other console in the Wii U, PS4 Xbox One generation got a deal with AMD, at least nVidia probably see a big reasons to get into this market.

So, I do believe the driver support from GPU providers will change drastically for Linux over the coming year.

Why can’t any developers please just tell if there are any plans on making a Linux client or Steam OS client?

If there is any possibility that there will be a Linux version later through Steam, I will keep Windows and do the grinding stuff meanwhile. But if I delete Windows today and if the game make it to Linux within a year, it will be daunting to get back, since it will put me way back to where I would have my toons, and I would probably not bother getting back to the game, unless they remove the grinding stuff anyway.

Today might be the last day I will be able to play this game. The release of Ubuntu 13.10 (not that it seems like I will be using Ubuntu after all) was set to be the date to remove Windows, and since there wont be a Linux client, I don’t see any reason to keep Windows while waiting for a Linux client.

This one single game is the only reason that I have booted up Windows the last year, but then again have stood for all gaming in this period and most of the computer use in general. If I don’t get this game to work in Linux, are there really any good MMOs available for Linux. If I do get it to work, can it be changes done to the game that makes it a mess again?

Will try that, thanks! I have bumblebee yes, and I have used optirun to start applications with the nVidia cart. It works when I test the card, but not in applications like PlayOnLinux or Steam.

Yeah, I did notice some graphical problems. Some player skin not loading for one. Some I can deal with, just hope non of them will be a 100% deal breaker.

I have mainly used consoles for gaming, thus this laptop isn’t all that well suited for gaming, and I only get 35 fps in Windows. Now that games are coming to Linux, I might as well jump back to PC as gaming platform, and get a desktop PC that can run this game a little better in Linux. That should have an impact on performance.

I don’t get why, after the removal of MF and no compensation what so ever compared to all other MF gear, we are still only able fuse a Quartz once a day, and that we can not sell it on BLTC.

I do like an overall stat since I don’t always know what I want with my alts, and feel like these stats is very versatile, but it was MF that made me invest in them in the first place, and made feel more useful to begin with. But it seems like Anet have no intentions to make any form of compensation or changes according to this.

Since it didn’t get any compensation, and they meant the stats were good enough as they were with or without MF, maybe they should keep MF on Celestial (that you had to sacrifice better stats for more MF find)? Since that was the reason for MF being removed on all other gear in hte first place, but it does not seem to apply on Celestial.

That is true But Windows is to be taken off the system within 2 months, I am tired of dual booting, and I doubt there will be a native Mac client at that time.

I assume a native Mac client will support OpenGL, since Direct X aren’t officially supported on Mac, and that should make things way easier for Linux gamers. However, I did find some information from when the news about a Mac client first appeared that it were using Cider from TransGaming and would still be using Direct X.

Tried to find out how the progress on Mac beta is working out, but it seems like it has been beta for a while and might be for an uncertain amount of time as well. And the developers seems to be very silent with talking back to the community.

The only quote I have read about a possible Linux client is from Colin Johanson:

“You know, it’s something that we check around every now and then, but there’s no one actively working on it right now, and we won’t be working on it in the near future. But we have talked about it, yes.”

I installed on Linux today. Got 16 FPS. STILL, I can’t seem to get my nVidia card to run via PlayOnLinux (GPU with Optimus technology), so it runs on Intel Integrated GMA4000HD (if I remember correctly). Now even player skins have a problem loading …

Will be interesting to see how it will be with kernel 3.9+ and the new drivers from nVidia that is in Beta.

I have read that there is about 10-25 fps drop on Linux in some comments around the web. If that is true it could be doable.

Considering the overall stats increase for use with MF, this gear was kind of superior to other MF gear. As you can see, even though Celestial have overall lower stat that MF gear, in MF gear, MF is the main stat and the other stat has the same stat as the secondary stats in non-MF gear.

I invested in Celestial, and not everyone look up guildwars2.com for news. It should be something mentioned in the game about this. And if it was well known that it would be removed when it was introduced, why did Anet add MF to Celestial in the first place?

Agree with Zacchary on a “end it”-skill, it can be very annoying sometimes to not having this option. As far as it goes for WvW, I don’t mind giving full XP and lootbags with the use of such a skill, you do get defeated either way. If a mechanic that would lower lootbags and XP would be implemented, it would result in a longer less responsive “skill” with a few second (and at least longer that the finishers) to take affect.

Agree on this one, and I don’t really get it either. Why has Anet made the Celestial gear so time consuming to get?

I invested in it because of two things.

First and foremost because it seemed to be the best MF gear out there, but now they might just take away MF from the gear. Nothing has been said.

Secondly because of versatility, since you have an overall same amount points on all stats, it is easy to change to new builds without changing to new gear.

But as many has said, it is from far the best gear out there. And it really does not make much sense of making it so time consuming and/or expensive to craft Celestial. If you are out of crystals, it might take over a month for just one piece, if you have crystals, a minimum of 5 days. It’s is just stupid, and I don’t understand why they have made it like this.

One of the main reason why many liked to use Celestial is because of the MF combined with all the other stats. And compared to Ascended, its stats will seems even less useful.

Will it just be removed, or will it be changed with something else? And if so, what will be the new stat be for new Celestial armors and weapons you craft?

Also, people complaints about the time it takes to make an ascended gear: Celestial, if you are out of crystals, you need to harvest your node (if you are unlucky, it is 3 crystals every day, lets say 8 days for just one fused crystal, and multiply that with 5 to get 5 fused ones, that is over a month for just one piece!), and you are only allowed to fuse one crystal a day, and 5 fused crystals is needed, so it is a minimum of 5 days even if you have enough crystals for each piece.

Kind of agree to that, but there is still expenses that would need to be covered. Unless they feel the income of the available versions are big enough to make a version for Linux.

Still, there is a version for Mac. How many gamers uses Mac contra Linux? And how hard would it be to port the game to Linux? Also, how much effort is it to develop games that are easier to port to other platforms?

I do hope we will see some changes when it comes to gaming on Linux with Valve’s involvement. Some games even seems to get better performance in Linux (one source: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/08/valves-optimizations-make-linux-port-of-l4d2-outperform-windows-version/ and ), although the gap was much smaller when they tested the OpenGL version on Windows (Linux OpenGL: 315fps, Windows DirectX: 270.6fps, Windows OpenGL: 303.4fps). Also, after Valve’s announcement hardware companies have started putting more effort into drivers for Linux. There has also been speculations about other game companies involvement in Linux, after for instance EA attended to Ubuntu Summit.

Hopefully Linux will be a more suitable platform for gamers in the coming years

Within a few months, I will probably be satisfied with drivers (next GPU drivers from nVidia and changes in the kernel seems to have been improved a lot) and games (Metro: Last Night, Dota2, Europa Universalis IV, Half-Life 2, etc.) within a few months to keep me occupied until more games pop up

If there wont be a Linux port, or some kind of attempt to do a crowd funding, is there a good thread here somewhere about getting the game to work on Linux?

I would love to see a linux client. I’d be totally wiling spend money on a gemstore item that did nothing but fund someone to work on the linux client.

Since this game if free, and I play it a lot, I try to set aside an amount of money to use in BLTC each month. If they made a Linux-client that I would have to pay for, I would pay to unlock the Linux-client as well.

Have the developers made any comments about the possibility of a Linux-client?

The only reason for me to boot into Windows is because of this game. I want to continue to play this game, but as more games come out on Steam for Linux, I am willing to sacrifice many games to support those who actually develop for Linux.

I will give it an attempt to install GW2 through Wine when the time comes, but if that doesn’t work that well, GW2 will be missed.

Re-doing the maps is not forced to fix the issue, I redid 6 maps yesterday and another one so in total almost 7 hours just doing this hoping to finish and get the one map that didn’t count. People just farming the event now as they already killed Scarlet and don’t care if that part is done for anyone else, they get the same rewards as those trying to do it ‘properly’.

Sad but true, even some with Commander Badges using the badge to get people to follow them and help them out with farming, instead of fighting the invasion as intended.

Still, you will get progress on the achievement even though you don’t fight Scarlet, but would rather complete the invasion and do the events as intended. Maybe stop or considerably lower all drops from Aetherblades or whatever that is finished and not needed anymore to progress?

Did Gendarran again yesterday, starting over with the list from the beginning, making sure get a mix of all possible things you can do in the invasions. Luckily that was the one that didn’t count the first time, and considering what Josh Davis wrote up there, in our case, it sounds very likely that that was the case for us in that area.

And after that Mount Maelstrom popped up, so that completed the achievement 13/13 ^^

Same. This is rather frustrating. Since we have no idea which one of them that didn’t count, it can be anyone of them. So we have to start all over again. Now we can only take what has been told into consideration, but still, if the same bug appears on the same map, we have no way to find out if we really have done this one earlier, or if it is some bug that reappears.

For how long will we be able to finish this living story?

We’re still looking into this.

As I mentioned before, there are a few things that MIGHT be affecting your ability to complete these achievements:

  • Killing Molten Alliance or pirates does not count towards event credit.
  • Killing spawns from the Clockwork part piles does not count towards event credit.

The best bet for getting event completion is going to be taking down the Clockwork champions. They are directly tied to event completion.

Please keep providing details when you fail to receive completion.

So this means you can still get the “Scarlet has been driver off … for now”-window without getting progress in the achievement? That I am sure to have gotten in every invasion I have been in. Still miss 2 areas and not just 1.

I have this problem too. I have been doing all these invasions with someone else, that also is stuck with the exact same number.

We should only have Mount M. left (I don’t have the list in front of me now, but pretty sure this is the one), and we have kept track, and also done some several times. Still, it says we miss 2.

There have been some that didn’t get through the first progress, but we did still got the items for completing (although we didn’t check every time if we actually got progress).

This is more weird however:

One of the many times we ended up in overflow, we actually saw the events, and could them and do them. Two invasions earlier, we ended up in overflow for Fireheart Rise, and that being only two hours earlier without re-logging or updates, we could not attend to or see the events. So I am wondering if it actually counted in overflow, but we did get loot for completing and made progress and everything. I do believe this was Dredgehaunt Cliffs on Saturday on RoS.

This game really need a checklist for these things! We have tried to keep track, but when things like this happens, it is hard to be sure which one that didn’t count (and yes, we have been there until she was gone every time). Now it feels like we have to start over again and double-check everyone.

MF removal Utility slots Celestial items

I read an article today about MF that I didn’t find when I looked this up.

It seems that MF is staying, but it is taken away from gear. So you will still be account wide MF, and food and other consumables that raise MF. They will probably make it so that you can get more MF overall with other consumables than you can today.

Still, this means that gamers need to choose between MF consumables or other consumables that is more suitable for their build, but many will probably be more ok with this than having to carry an additional armor and choose between good loot or aid better in fights.

Has there been any information about this at all, or just that they are removing MF?

This can be hard to solve and at the same time make everyone happy.

1. They can make a new stat. But many might end up with gear they don’t need. Considering crafting material, gear, and so on that has MF, this would maybe be the easiest thing to do. But many would probably like something else in exchange if they have two exotic gears, one for MF and one for other builds.

2. Simply removing it and make users choose between other gear and crafting material could work. But if they don’t need a second gear, getting the value back in cost may be hard to calculate. Getting the average BLTC costs from the previous months before the news was announced maybe? This will however not work with the Celestial gear, since no other gear have this stats.

3. Simply removing it from Celestial gear can ruin a lot for those who went for Celestial as MF gear because stat wise, it adds more to the overall stats that regular 3 stat MF gear. For Celestial, simply change it something else might be useful, for an overall boost in stats, 1% condition duration and 1% boon duration could be nice, but it could be a about 20% increase, and that is somewhat a lot.

Just hope they don’t change it into Gold Find, Karma Gain or XP Gain, would either be useless or just push the problem over to a new stat. And about MF in Account Bonuses, if MF is removed, what will happen with that? Split up and divided on the three other stats?

I have also read someone suggesting a swiftness stat. For farming purposes, as well as levelling, and in CoM, and more, these stat could be very useful.

Annoying graphical chest piece bug

This started after today’s update (10th Aug.), and is only visible with the chest piece on, and only with the Pit Fighter, it also happens in non-transumted chest pieces as well.

It looks like a glove near the left hand that floating in the air. When the hand moves, the glove stays in its place, but it looks like glue is stretching from the glow to the hand.

Don’t like the waypoint update. I think it is one of the most stupid changes, especially since ressing someone who is dead is usually useless since it takes a lot of time, so practically, in some dungeons, it kind of means: Please, everyone die so we can reset and try again.

Often it is more convenient to waypoint to a location. Let say you are getting the flaming scepters in AC expl. and some are close to the exit, and one on the other side. To waypoint they will have to wait for the others to be outside a fight. If you run in random groups, it can be hard to get people to cooperate and wait for everyone, and if some starts running and is constantly is in battle, the ones slacking can’t waypoint, but is sure to be blamed. Can cause frustration for those new to certain dungeons.

It might also take away the courage for those new to dungeons if some are not able to stay alive, maybe causing the full party to be wiped and reset the bosses. Should at least be possible to waypoint when you are dead. It is just stupid to have to wait for everyone else to die in a bossfight to be able to get back up.

Are there any indicator to see if anyone else is outside a fight? Or do I actually open up a map and try to waypoint to see if everyone is outside a fight? This is not very convenient either.

Those who are more used to certain dungeons will now probably look at achievements before adding others to a party, so it might get harder for those who are newer to the game to find a party. It might also cause more frustration between those who are new to dungeons and the experienced ones when playing together. This might cause in kicking players or rage quitting.

New Dailies

I don’t understand all the complaining from many gamers here. They did not take long to complete yesterday, and I had to find someone that could help me with the finishers (played with a low lvl necromancer, joined up with two warriors), and that was only the first day, will probably get faster as soon as people get more used to them. And since we will have to do much more variety, we will have to try out different aspects of the game. And it is not like you are forced to complete the dailies every day.

And combos is not that hard if you have some finishers or some fields, people use them all the time without noticing. Hope they put in more stuff so everyone will have to seek different parts of the game, like crafting in the mystic forge, salvaging, and so on.

Would be fun to put a little more dynamic into it. Like being able to choose your own path for the dailies, so you are not forced upon something. And some dailies, like doing events, would be a could thing to have more often than some others, since that bring people towards the events.

At a later update you’ll be able to chose your set of dailies out of a daily set (x out of y). I think we’ll know the entire set by the end of the week.

Sound nice. Hope it will be a little more than just “gather a certain amount of these two and get a total of 100% combined”. One thing that could be nice, is adding new ones when one is finished, and make you have to complete three dailies. And make some to interlock with each others, like if you complete a harvesting daily, a new daily pops up with crafting, and maybe sell on black lion trading company or salvage after that, so you always have more than one to choose from until you have done the three for your dailies.

New Dailies

It looks like Anet is trying to get people try out other aspects of the game, and I had fun completing them yesterday, although, kind of liked it when combos somewhat was some kind of hidden gem for those who were interested.

How does these dailies works? They alternate from day to day so they are no longer the same each day if I understood correctly? Are there any list of new dailies somewhere? So far:
*Events
*Harvest
*Killing variety
*Killing enemies under water
*Crafting
*Combo kills
(from above post)
*Revive people
*Dodge attacks

Would be fun to put a little more dynamic into it. Like being able to choose your own path for the dailies, so you are not forced upon something. And some dailies, like doing events, would be a could thing to have more often than some others, since that bring people towards the events.

Started an Asura only guild in Piken Square a while ago, but never put much effort in it at the time. Would be fun to have a bunch of Asura running and playing together, so I’ll will put more effort into it now and see where it goes.

Would like it to be a friendly and social guild, where we help each other out with speed up lvl-ing on lower lvl characters, harvesting, grinding, and spend some time to explain those who are new to how certain aspects of the game like WvW, dungeons, combos, etc. works. This will make us stronger faster, and taking some time to explain things to gamers new to certain aspect of the game, and form some strategies, will make us cooperate better and do things more sufficient in the long run. I want this guild to be suitable for both new players and long time players.

After invited to a guild, there is no option to set up demands for which character that are allowed to represent once they are in a guild, but would be nice if we tried to make this as much Asura as possible.

If anyone is interested, please send me a PM in this page, or reply to this post. You may use this as your second or third guild, or whenever you feel like joining up with some fellow Asuras, so no strict rules about joining multiple guilds.

My main is a lvl 80 Guardian, focusing on support/control.

This is more a wish than a suggestion, but there might be some reasoning behind this somehow as well.

As a supportive Guardian, I would really like to have armor and weapons with the following stats (taking an armor piece as an example):

+72 Vitality
+101 Healing Power
+72 Toughness

The one I can choose from that is most suitable (as I have found), is Cleric’s … :

+72 Power
+101 Healing Power
+72 Toughness

… and Ascalonian Catacombs armor:

+72 Precision
+72 Vitality
+101 Healing Power

Power and Precision is not something that I feel that is that much suited for my Guardian.

Having their own color in the chat would be more sufficient due to space, or just C in front of them.

Different colors, the option to turn everyone but one badge off, or the option to decide which one that are allowed to see the badge would also be nice. It is confusing when you are in an area where there are the gamers running around with the commander badge.

It seems like many guilds also use this method as a waypoint to others guild members or allied guilds so everyone knows where to go. So far it seems like the only option, but it is far from a viable solution. It seems to be many that dislikes the ‘only five persons in a party’ limit with no way to expand this. new to this forums, and categories in the forums seems to be very general, and there are many new threads that pops up constantly and therefor dissapear fast, so it might have been discussed several times before.

It also seems like there are more and more guilds that are getting these badges, and if there aren’t good organizing in the borderlands, it might end up with them being spammed with these badges. Their use should be expanded and there should be a limit cap for how many commanders that are allowed in each borderland.

I like anime, but have not heard about this anime before. The first anime that popped up in my head when I saw the screen shots was Rurouni Kenshin for some reason. Got to check it out … after I have checked out Sword Art Online.

Great that you now can change the characters look, even gender. One thing that might be a little weird is that it does not seems to let you change the name. Since you can change the gender in this kit, it makes no sence in most situations where the gamer has a gender specific name.

If not name change will be able in this kit, gender change should be able in the same kit that let you change the name of the character.

I hope it’s not too (not sure if it the correct English term->) quirky to pull something like this off. It might be a little specific, but there are enough general WvW, PvE, PvP, PvX guilds as there are, so I hope there is room for some more unique guilds on the different servers.

@ichal, I can see you made a post in the Asura Only Guild thread, and that you are in Fergusson Crossing, that is also a U.S. server. Not sure if you would see changing to a EU server as a viable option, although I don’t think you have to be on the same server to add someone to a guild or as a friend and guest invite them to a PvE party.

Btw, I take back that about not beeing able to change the look of your character. Looks like there are some new stuff in the store to change most attributes of your characters (thank you Anet (^^,) .

Well, people name their guild with all sort of bases, but it could be a good idea to find out about whether or not this is a name that everyone is ok with sooner than later.

Just for curiosity, which anime is it associated with?

If the player only said that with no context, I would take that for role playing. I can understand why the Asuras aren’t all that well liked among other races. And, if someone intended to insult you, they would not likely call you a rabbit, sounds like a clear insult to your Asura character, not you in person.

Even though I don’t do RP, I feel like I have a hard time justifying for being a helpfull Asura (even with visitors from non-Asuras) in the Rata Sum and Metrica Province areas :p

This might tell a little about the relationship between Sylvari and Asura:

Q: Rata Sum and the Pale Tree seem pretty close to one another geographically. Are there any conflicts between the asura and the sylvari? How is their relationship portrayed in-game?

Jeff: The sylvari met the asura soon after their awakening. Needless to say, the meeting did not go well as the asura were crafty and manipulative and the early sylvari were open and friendly. It was an important lesson for the sylvari – not all the other races are particularly nice. Since that time, the two races have gotten along better, but both races treat each other based on early assumptions – asura think of the sylvari as being frivolous and unsophisticated, while sylvari think of the asura as being poor, limited beings – grasping and calculating.

My best character is not an Asura at the moment (have a lvl 80 human), but I’m working on it. For a while now I will be focusing a lot on leveling up my Asura characters, and will probably be doing a lot of Rata Sum and Metrica Province completions. If there are any new gamers that would like to have some help, or if anyone starting a new character as an Asura and want to speed up leveling or map completion by running together with someone else, feel free to join whether you want to become a member or not.

I tried to check this up recently. As far as Google helped me, it does not seems to be possible. So if you want to change name of your guild, it is goodbye to all the influence, and you might need a lot of reorganization if you have a large guild that will join the new one.

Does not seems like you are able to make more than one guild at the time either if you would like to have two guilds active in a transfer period.

You could try to ask support if they can help you out.

Not being able to change name of a guild with a lot of influence, change name on your 80 lvl main character, the color of hair accessories and som other small aspects of your character can be a huge let down if you find out that these things does not feel right, so there should be an option for these things in a way that people can’t missuse them.

WvW: Organizing parties

I like to play WvW, but the way it handles parties, or how you can interact with guild members or allied guilds, feels kind of lacking.

As it is now, it is hard to see on the map where the other parties you play with in your and your allied guilds are, only the one in your party is visible on the map.

Would it be possible to make some kind of feature where you:

1. First form different parties, and then group them together as one big group divided into smaller goups, so that your party will be blue, and the others for example red. And that also gamers not in a group would be able to join the grouped groups.

2. Have a commander icon that is only vissible for your guild (and if possible allied guilds). Often there are no reason to pull a huge zerg that often happens around those with a commandor icon, and having an own icon that is distinct from the other commanders makes it easier to follow your own commander.

I first though that it would be a good idea to make a character from each race to see the different stories, test their racial abilities, get some variation, and so on. But after playing with Asura, I constantly keept overlooking the other non-Asura characters, so I just as well went Asura all the way
