Basically this thread is a L2P issue.

Thief is OP because no one can catch it and have essentially infinite amounts of dodge.

Neco is OP because it has more effective HP than anything else in the game.

Warriors are OP because they can do 10k damage to an unmoving target.

Guardians are OP because they can keep blocking attacks.

etc., etc., etc.

Again what am I supposed to do against some bunker guardians and engi’s with retaliation on? GO RUN AWAY AND WAIT IT OUT? Letting them control the point and win the game? That isn’t reactionary game play at all.

So I’m like OK great, fine, whatever. But I’ve killed myself from 13k health to 0 in under 3 seconds just from someone having retaliation. Isn’t that a bit much? Isn’t that a bit over the top?

Assuming spvp, this means you hit your target 52 times before noticing.

This assuming your target has Marader’s and a power rune, so the equation is (133+(0.05*2,355))/13,000=52.

Hammer definitely shouldn’t be instant. 2 sec ranged hard cc on instant cast would be way too strong.

The problem is with the animation speed, it takes 1.75 seconds (from start of cast) for the hit to land, and that’s way to long for such a skill IMO.

judge’s intervention cannot be used mid air anymore. It is intended.

To add on this, all Guardian teleports do not work mid-air anymore. However you can still teleport mid-Mighty Blow.

I am all for giving skills cast-times while giving them some other buffs to compensate and make them stronger. This for Meditations too.

Smite Condi had a cast once, but it was really awkward to use as it was the only meditation with a cast time.

Outstanding. You are smarter than the PVP team.

They didn’t realized this, since they are only removing amulet trying to fix PVP.

Rev, Mesmer, Warrior don’t need cleric amulet to be sustaining… Guard, Ele are broken and need it to be something. And they removed it anyway. It shows they don’t understand the game at all.

So… It’s seriously dangerous to ask the PVP team control on “skills” when they removed amulet on the fly by “feeling” without having any tools like spreadsheet and matrix to balanced their classes.

Mathematician should do balancing in all game. Not sales department, nor forum moderator, not marketing guy.

Balancing to “please” the crowd since the last 2 years, just did killed viable build diversities.

Oh they know that Guards have trouble sustaining, they’re just afraid of giving them sustain. Source.

IMO, this is most likely the result of our skill system. When you only have 10 active skills, the only way to make a character do more is to stack on passives.

Reapers that can put insane condi damage while still being a tanky hp pool.

Reapers have to debilitate you/face-tank everything. They have no blocks, little to no heals outside of skill 6, and no extra endurance regeneration traits. They sustain by making sure you do little as damage as possible and face-tanking the rest.

DPS Guardians (and by extension DH) have always been this way. They were designed to sustain via blocks and heals and die when you catch them with no CD’s. But yea, the trap heal could use some adjustment, don’t think any other heal in the game has base ~9k heal with a 1.25 HP ratio.

Symbol of Blades actually has a cast time, around 1/4, as it starts after the attack finishes. The 0 cast time refers to the instant blink.

Fire symbols would be way too strong for an Adept trait. Well, even as a GM trait. That would mean I could maintain a permanent Fire field with Sword #2 alone… Atleast now it’s just a permanent light field.

And I would add cripple or chill to the list of conditions that proc Binding Jeopardy.

Hell, you could probably maintain an obscene amount of might with the hammer just by auto’ing and using Mighty Blow on CD.

Second exit and the path from that to home point needs adjustmet: you can take fall damage from jumping/rolling out, the stairway down onto the point from the side ledges is difficult to see (it looks like it’s low enough to not take falling damage).

- Radiant Retaliation replaced. Retaliation is terrible boon in the first place and if you’re condition, you’re 100% taking Amplified Wrath since you can get much more damage.
- Spirit weapon rework.
- Signet changes/buffs. Right now only Bane Signet is ever used, and it’s taken 100% of the time for it’s passive, never it’s active.
- Staff 2’s aiming system changed to Deflecting Shot’s.
- Staff 5’s casting time sped up so it can actually be used to stop players moving somewhere.
- Torch 5 change.
- 25% movespeed buff somewhere.

I mean why on earth would a competitive solo queuer or loner would want to play this game if he/she is just getting kittenters for team mates that he or she can not carry match after match with scores like 125 – 501 like 19 matches or so in row, when we can simply go play a actually competitive sPvP game competitively as solo queuer?

ANet’s PvP team has full responsibility in the down fall of GW2’s once great sPvP game mode. I will never ever play another game that this team is apart of, simple as that.

PvP is a team game and not a solo game. Stop blaming ANet for this!! Blame the soloQuers like yourself who actually ruin the very concept of PvP. It is a team game and ranked games should be played in premade teams rather soloQ where every person has no idea of others and want to just do what he/she wants with no communication etc.

Retaliation is garbage. It won’t kill enemies, it won’t increase your DPS and if you are doing high level fractals with boon thieves it can even kill you. And if you already forgot, I’m talking about PvE here, not PvP. This boon is useless and I’d love to give it up without getting anything in return. Or maybe, turn this in a boon that can’t be stolen. At least then I can actually make use of my 10% bonus damage when enemies stand in my symbols when using a GS.

Retaliation is garbage everywhere. It really only discourages thieves from autoattacking you in sPvP.

It depends on the trap. You want your target to move in and out of Test of Faith as crossing the border deals more damage than the initial spring, but you want people to sit inside Procession of Blades.

It’s amazing how putting aegis on mace 3 makes this so much more practicle.

It’s not just aegis, it now also applies protection if you block, instead of only applying protection if you didn’t block. It got a pretty big buff if you as me.

There has been debate here on the subject but it’s more along the line of what are ways we can speed up the game.
As for guardian I’ve always liked the feel of less mobility but high effectiveness that scales more with more people making them strong group fighters but I think with a lot of the changes the guardian’s ability to sustain compared to other professions has been a major issue causing them to be less effective and something we need to work on but it can come into conflict with speeding the game up so it’s a bit tricky.

The problem with this is that the other “group fighter” classes have access to spammable switfness or a 25% speed increase somewhere while having similar/more sustain: Necros have a somewhat spammable swiftness from warhorn and a 25% speed signet, ele’s have a 25% speed increase as both a minor trait and signet, and Engies have it as a master trait and the Scapper spec poops out swiftness.

Ranger/Druid is the only other “group fighter” class without a speed increase but they can easily obtain perma-swiftness without giving up 2/3 of the utility bar and can gain far more mobility through their weapon skills than a Guardian can ever hope to achieve.

DH has too much sustains
Gosh, pretty much every class thinks DH has too much sustains in team fights except…
Ranger, Wariors, Engineers, Elementalists, Necro, and… well some good Revs.. some good Mesmers.. some good Thieves.. gosh I guess that’s it.

Man, I still don’t understand why Guardians have kitten sustain compared to other classes. At release, Guardians were given the lowest base HP because Guardians was suppose to have high sustain through numerous heals and active defenses. Now other classes have higher sustain, arguably better active defenses, all while sporting more HP, more damage, and more versatility.

And please fix our CC’s. Our CC’s still have CD’s from release when they actually meant something.

The biggest issue with DH traps is, there’s way too much on a single utility. Traited Smite Condition, traited traps, Heals being meditations and can proc Smite Condition, it’s these items that creates huge windows if opportunity for other classes to take advantage of. It’s also the reason why, if used all together, can down an unaware; unskilled, opponent in soloQ. We have soloQ players telling devs to nerf us and competitive players asking for a buff. Both are right, in their own way…

I still don’t understand why they decided to load so much into Meditations instead of changing other utilities. You pretty much always take the Valor line because the buffs to Meditations in that lane is too good to give up.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what needs fixing?

We’re the least viable, least forgivable class in competitive pvp. This needs fixing.

We have a plethora of traits & utilities thats utterly unviable. This needs fixing.

I could go into detail how it’s more difficult playing Guardian against a competitive team who knows how to shut them out if you like. But yea, we need fixing.

If it’s too hard or challenging to play, there are other classes. This is exactly why those other classes exist in MMO’s; to give players access to styles and difficulty levels that fit their own skills.

Frankly, we already know what kind of fixes we will get, if any and that’s not due to exasperation, it’s because we know Anet already set the expectation of where Guardians are with relation to game balance. If this continues to bother people … just another reason to find a different class to play.

I would argue against the reason that DH is not meta in Tournaments due to “difficulty” but, any class can technically work if the team tries hard enough. Abjured is a prime example as seen from tournaments immediately after HoT; winning on “unviable” classes. They’re all just that good at working as a team.

But here are the facts about DH, they can’t 1v1 side nodes so they’re entirely reliant on well placed traps and overall AoE damages in a team fight. What absolutely kills us is how easily it is to interrupt our Virtues & Purification during pressured scenarios. No other class has the weakness like we do and not everyone is willing to put in the dedication to make DH work (unless the DH is better than what the team has at the moment.. which can be often.)

Engi/Ele/Ranger/Rev/Necro
There’s only 1 class I would go up against 1v1 and that’s a Necro. I’m otherwise entirely reliant on my team to be effective.

Sure we’re not that bad but we’re not that good either. DH in SoloQ is fine because opponents hardly ever play as a team but in competitive play, players would rather choose other classes before utilizing a Guardian in their team comp.

That and for some reason a good amount of our high damage skills have projectiles in them which don’t always hit either due to movement/terrain/RNG or the high amount of projectile denial in the game.

I have been taking another look at GW2 because WOW has become stale.

I’m looking for the opinion of players here. The pvp forums have been overwhelming negative about the state of pvp.

Is this game worth another look, or are the Guardian problems in perspective to pvp just not worth it. I don’t think I can play a class with no run speed buff again.

I logged on to play my Guardian and it was torture w/o run speed. I played for a bit but it felt too much like work. What are the chances of this class really being worth it in the future and how long will that take?

Nobody knows. Anet is very secretive about their balance. But if you’re waiting for another mass rebalance of the Guardian to play again, you’re better off looking elsewhere, many issues that players point out and ask to be addressed are never looked at by Anet.

Number 1, 2 and 3 are causing a loop that is creating frustrations. We’ll take a pro player (and for the sakes of my point we will say anyone with a high enough skill level to be competitive in at least AG is a “pro player”), he gets all these blow out matches and maybe he thinks it’s great while he’s getting easy pips and then hits Legendary. Now what? Queue times are horrendous and even when he gets one there isn’t much of a tangible reward. So after a day or two of this he goes to an alt account or buys a new account to start the journey again so he can actually get matches. He plays these matches against lower skill levels and destroys them until he gets to Legendary again to start the process all over again. Multiply this by the number of pros doing the same thing.

Now take a casual player that isn’t that good or is maybe just getting into PvP. He gets rolled over and over again. He makes complaints and gets told by these same pros to just wait until things settle. So he waits and keeps playing or maybe takes a few days off but then comes back to face those same pros on new accounts. Then they complain again and get told they are where they belong but how do they get where they belong when they are facing Legendaries (on alt accounts) instead of Emeralds, Sapphires and Rubies.

Am I the only one that sees the deconstructive cycle here?

Placement games are pretty much the answer to this, but might not work well due to population. And if you do get placed into a lower tier you can probably still play your way out relatively fast considering how good people are mowing their way out of Amber→Sapphire.

On the last 2 I will say that seeing only the same 4-6 classes being good is boring. There is a complete lack of variety which is boring to play and even more boring to watch. Why wait a half hour just to see 6 Reapers in the match? I don’t see a reason. Imbalanced balance requires more professions if you want it to work, or at the very least have all professions being viable but countering other professions. Not just the same 5 builds.

IMO this is a symptom of Anet’s balancing style, which hasn’t really changed since GW1.

And then there comes Esports. Face it ANet you don’t have the viewership or playerbase in PvP. You are making the same mistake every new MOBA makes, you tried to go esports before you had the popularity to back it up. 4k viewers? That’s nothing. Multiply that by a hundred and you get about 10% of the viewers LoL gets for their World Championships. That money should have been spent on improving the game rather than trying to create something you don’t have the popularity for.

And why would you? “Hey wanna pay 50 bucks to play an imbalanced game and try to be a pro player?” Reply: “Nah, I think I’ll play LoL it’s free and even with the imbalance it still offers me more choices as well as a larger fan base.”

Anet has heavily hinted that the esports aspect is more of a giant ad than anything else, and they’re very satisfied with the number of new players it has generated. I don’t think they expect it to get anywhere near LoL, DotA, or Starcraft.

Skyhammer Design Discussion

  • Open up the nodes a bit more and give the players some kiting room off-point, make the platforms all around the side points accessible similar to Clocktower on Khylo. That way if the point is being nuked repeatedly by Skyhammer, players can get off point and range onto the point forcing those on it to move off.
  • The channel time and the AoE of Skyhammer needs to be adjusted for how easy it is to aim, the ability to see the whole map unobstructed, and how claustrophobic the (current) points are. Compare it to the treb on Kyhlo, the treb is much more difficult to aim and land, it’s pretty hard to see what you’re hitting in some places, and time between hits is pretty lengthy. The points on Kyhlo are also much more open and space around them are larger.
  • Glass plates and unobstructed edges need to be removed completely. One-shot kills from stealth aren’t fun.
  • Jump pads need to revamped, they’re somewhat difficult to use and are annoy to use. They don’t get you to where you want to be most of the time.
  • The underground portions between mid-point and side-point serve no purpose other than to annoy players traveling between said points. Either remove them or give an incentive to use them such as a secondary (but longer) path between all the points but hides the player from being seen by those on the ground level.
  • I’d be okay with enabling gliders only for this map.

Guardians don’t really have the skills/trait needed to go melee most of them time (unlike Engi’s and Ele’s) so Sw/Fc is the preferred melee set nowdays as it adds the much needed defense. The GS, on the other hand, is full offense so I’d advise sitting on it in anything larger than 2v2. You could probably use it to surprise burst low people with JI+GS3/trap then retreat with GS2 and F2.

Burn Guard is a very gimmicky build, and you’ll have an even harder time against necros as the decent ones will just transfers your burn stacks back on you then interrupt Shelter, then corrupt all the boons you spit out. That being said, it’s very good against people that don’t expect it, thus allowing you to stack ~6 stacks of burning on them.

They did talk about PvP in the Reddit AMA a couple of days ago. The primary thing that came out of it is that they are aware of the matchmaking problems and are working on it.

The real question is why are the devs more active on an unofficial board than the official one.

How to bring up DS to the level of RS?

Problem with DS is that a lot of its skills don’t synergize and each skill only scales with one stat unlike RS. And RS scaling is just straight up better.

  • Lifeblast is a ranged autoattack yet Dark Path puts you into melee range.
  • Death’s Charge gives higher mobility than Dark Path.
  • Life Transfer is only power-based while Soul Spiral scales with both Condition and Power.
  • Executioner’s Scythe will do more than Tainted Shackles ever will.

Doom is arguably the only skill that can compete with its counterpart Infusing Terror as Doom is 1200 range and can be traited to be the longest fear in the game.

For DS to compete with RS, I’d suggest the following:

  • Lifeblast projectile speed needs to be increased, cast time needs to be decreased.
  • Dark Path needs to be a ground-targeted teleport that chills and blinds in an AoE upon arrival.
  • Doom should be AoE within a certain range in addition to the current affects (maybe 350 range?).
  • Life Transfer/Tainted Shackles both need to be remade.

Unrelated but I too would love a buff to the Terror trait, sad to see Chill do more damage while being more common.

Well SYG is needed as a stun break and as a source of stability in this CC is everywhere meta, you dont even know how and when you got CC and with SYG and F3 traited for stability your whole team will thank you.

As for condi cleansing CoP can be swapped whith Smite condition, you will lose some dmg output and trait in Valor isnt so good anymore but you gain one more stun break and you can laugh in Reaper face!

You’re just going to get feared again due to Corrupt Boon having a permanent home on the Reaper bar.

Was it like that in GW1 ?

All pvp game modes except Guild vs Guild in GW1 just pulled players (or teams) from the queue with no matchmaking.

GvG used automated monthly tournaments and used a Elo-based ratings system for the ladder.

Oh, thanks. I got killed by a noob dragon hunter a few times by this last night. Very frustrating. This is worse than unblockable taunt. Don’t know why people think it is ok for a skill to break you out of evade. I guess the pansies don’t mind when guardian can do this. It’s only game breaking if ranger can do it.

Because the elite trap walls act like wards, you can’t dodge out of a ward otherwise they’d be useless.

Not entirely sure if this behavior is intended or not, but when your character is moving Mace 2 and Axe 5 fire the way your character is facing instead of towards your target but your character is not moving, it fires in the direction of your target.
