First of all Happy Birthday GW2! 5 years, who’d guess that time flies so fast?

I love this game. Thanks to this game, I started creating videos, drawing and became much more active in an online community and met so many awesome people.

Almost 2 years ago I’ve decided to start drawing a webcomic about a grumpy Charr that meets a Skritt and they go through the personal story together. It had one special thing – after each episode, the readers were able to vote in a poll and affect the story in a big way. It gave the story a little funny twist.

It has only 20 episodes, it was supposed to take half a year to draw but you know, real life stuff etc. got in the way. This is a reason why I’m even more happy that I managed to finish it. And I managed to finish it for the 5. birthday of GW2 Feels awesome.

The comic has many flaws but I’ve learnt a lot in the process and I’m sure that the next creations will be much better.

Anyway I hope that you’ll like it.

Pistol off-hand will be much better choice than shield still IMO because Holo uses a lot of burns and pistol 4 works well with that. Damage Holo builds will have either p/p (condi) or s/p (power) combo.

Shield doesn’t do much that isn’t very situational. If your enemy isn’t ranged, your skill 4 is pretty much useless because with sword why would you push them back? Sure you can have one blast with long CD and some breakbar reduction with knockback but that’s not enough IMO.

And shield 5 is useful to the point while providing defense and stun if being hit and again some breakbar reduction.

Both skills have mediocre (if any) damage and utility that’s quite situational. Meanwhile pistol provides strong burns and good soft cc. Shield may get some uses with sword in pvp or wvw at best but IMO hammer provides better utility for those fights.

Shield isn’t ok, it needs adjustments to be less situational because even with sword it will be worse than off-hand pistol if it stays in current state.

While I agree that shield CD reduction would solve a lot for shield and make it more attractive that ammo suggestion seems great to me! It would make shield a very good defense option IMO.

Shield doesn’t need any changes. It’s probably the best one aside from chronomancer’s in the game. The only reason it isn’t used in PvP or WvW is because the main hand pistol is just about the worst weapon at our disposal.

IMO the new heal seems to be actually competitive with Healing Turret.

Is it? Every single engineer build on Metabattle, save one PvP build rated at a 60 rating that uses Elixir H, has the Healing Turret equipped. It’s simply too good to not have. It has far more functionality and healing than the other healing skills.

Maybe it’s not in any build on metabattle because it will be released on September 22.

It would also be nice if we actually had a viable heal other than Healing Turret. It’s both too good and the other options too bad. I don’t like the homogeny between engineers all using this same heal. It doesn’t feel fun.

New Holosmith and Legendary weapons

You just told me how it is now. And i know how it is. Classes like mesmer, warrior, guardian who fight with Legandary greatswords are more pleasent to watch it. Enginieers in 90% of fight use granades, bombs, etc. so posses legandary waepon isn’t so attractive.
You have to know that we will have xpac soon. And i hope dev look on this problem from players perspecitive.

We’ve been asking for legendary effects on kits for 5 years with no change. They are implementing a mechanics similar in effects to the existing ones. You will barely see your armor skins in it. They didn’t update Necro Shroud with legendary effects, they didn’t introduce Celestial Avatar that would use legendary effects from the weapons.

Do you really think that they will spend time on this if they didn’t even make legendary weapon effects available with the kits? Don’t be naive. In the end it’s all about your choice – do you want the stat swap convenience? Do you like the skin? Get a legendary weapon. Do you want to see its effects all the time? Reroll other profession and get the legendary weapon.

But I have good news for you: There seems to be a huge possibility that kits won’t work well with the new spec so if you’ll decide to get legendary weapon, you’ll see it much often because mechanics of Holo are such that you can’t spend all time in Photon Forge if you want to be effective.

The point is, you make legendary weapon to take a satisfacion from visual effects during fight and movement. If engi wont have that effect, doing legendary weapon is pointless for me. It takes to much effort for nothing.

It answers your question. Visually it behaves exactly like those I mentioned. If you’re in Photon Forge Mode you don’t use the weapon → no legendary effects in Photon Forge. But feel free to wait for devs to state the obvious.

OP what should engi’s theme be? Because judging by your post you want rifle to be the theme.

Engi is a profession that’s innovating, using the tools around him to help him succeed. Engi is an inventor, a machinist, an alchymist, a physicist and a scientist. Scrapper fits engi perfectly thematically. This time we got asura tech based spec. Personally, I’d rather give engi mace, which seems more fitting but I don’t see problem with sword.

I wonder about the ways of lowering heat. I presume that there will be a deterioration of it after some time of not being in fight but I have found only 1 active way of getting rid of heat – dodging and that’s based on equipping a trait. Some of the traits are dependent on lowering heat (i.e. trait that heals you when the heat decreases) so I wonder whether I missed something and there are more active ways to decrease it or if it decreases itself also in fight.

Kit and the Travelers podcast is a weekly podcast that talks about the current stuff occuring ingame, lore, speculations and a lot of other stuff. We are quite a diverse cast of people – Community event organizer, Youtuber, Painter, Voice Actor, Comic maker, Raider and a Streamer.

We are not very typical podcast though because we don’t have a fixed structure or aren’t very professional and we like to go offtopic quite often. We basically come each Wednesday and have fun.

Little warning though, if you’re looking for family friendly podcast then we’re not for you. There is some swearing, we don’t do namecalling or are toxic, we just sometimes let emotions out and we don’t hold back. "Leaked" Engie Spec

Never is a strong word, and there’s nothing stopping them from making the sword strong enough to where the off-hand doesn’t matter. Look at revenant, for example.

I just figured it made sense to make the sword a condi weapon in this instance just so perhaps in PvE we can finally shed our reliance on kits and run a sword/pistol setup … while still giving us a reason to run shield in PvP/WvW. It just seems logical to me.

The only real guarantee right now is that, without some kind of rework, no future elite specialization would ever have a power off-hand, as we’d be stuck running the pistol with it.

As we all know, engi has a good main hand + off hand condi combo with pistols. Then there is an offhand shield. I really doubt that they’ll give us now a condi weapon when our condi build already uses 1 hand weapons and they aren’t underwhelming.

IMHO a power weapon with some utility that would complement the shield (which could use some buffs) seems much more realistic.

Also I doubt that they’ll create a weapon just to counter kits. Either they’ll redesign kits or try to counter kits with the new specialization mechanics. But in terms of weapons we’re certainly missing a main hand weapon that complements shield and is useful in a different way than the other main hand (pistol) is. We need something that works well with the shield. Variety is the key.

There isn’t really point to give us another condi weapon currently – it would be either useless in comparison to MH pistol, or it would make the MH pistol useless. No point in making things more difficult for themselves when there’s no need for it.

That would be the idea, yes… I’m aware it’s not a very popular direction for kits, as many Engineers out there prefer to have 2-3 kits in a build… but, by restricting us to a single Kit, ANet would have to buff our actual weapon skills to be worth using… it’d also allow them to better balance our other skills as the current main issue is that everything our gadgets, turrets, and elixers can do, we can get from a kit +4 other skills… and usually the skill from the kit does the job better too…

So while it is an unpopular direction for kits, it’s also arguably the most beneficial…

I’m all for this change. But if that were to happen kits would need to get streamlined and each one should have entirely different use, i.e.: grenades – condi only, bomb – power dmg only, toolkit – defense only etc. Currently if engi wants to dish out the best dmg, he can’t use only 1 kit.

TBH I feel bat we won’t be able to use elite weapons on different elites. Holosmith with hammer would also be really cool if it is a power build. Elites would keep adding to classes that way until every class can run all weapons.

One thing that I was thinking was if they turned Stamina into Gas for the Holosmith elite. You have ways to get Energy and ways to spend it. So you can be very mobile if you save gas or very bursty if you don’t dodge and just ram all stamina as damage!

Either way the change to turret basically means they are indeed switching the toolbelts somehow. The explanation they gave for the change was hard to believe. Most people don’t use turrets and those that do most likely value Overcharging them over the toolbelt. I mean, if you can’t overcharge now then there isn’t much point to keeping them anyway in most cases.

Anyway, I do like scrapper a lot. I mean, hammer is the most fun thing ever, it’s just not that great on PVE. I’d argue if they buffed gadgets and add scrapper synergy to it it would be a fun playstyle. Gadget Scrapper. A close quarters fighter with high utility. But having hammer only to switch to granade or elixir gun or whatever just kinda sucks.

I agree. Engi has the elast number of weapons and could use little more variety. Enabling elite specs to use any elite spec weapon would help engi IMO.

Also gas mechanic? Seriously? 15 year old me is laughing his ass off right now

Turrets Overloads are no longer automatic, instead upon deployment Turret skills flip over to Overload, when Overloaded the skill flips over to Detonate until the Overload skill comes off cooldown.

The turret overcharge change needs to happen.

I like the change to the shield. It would make it much more useful and a decent defense choice IMO.

I’m not sure if I understand the kit change. Could player slot only one kit (into weapon swap-kit slot )?

I’d say that scrapper is useful for PvE. Hammer is still a decent weapon, and some of the gyros certainly have their uses. They’re just not useful in raids where generally the most important thing for most squad members is eking out the most DPS.

Broadly speaking, elite specialisations were billed as being sidegrades, rather than straight-out upgrades. Statistically speaking, if this was true, roughly half of the optimised builds for any game mode should be core. The fact that this obviously isn’t true shows that the current elite specs are mostly still overtuned.

In the case of the engineer, scrapper is certainly a more defensive-oriented elite specialisation, and the engineer does have a decent set of damage-oriented traits, so I don’t think it’s necessarily a problem if the highest DPS is coming out of a core build, as long as that DPS is competitive with what other professions are bringing (with or without elite specialisations).

IMO Scrapper was originally supposed to be defense oriented tank. In pve it’s lackluster in this role. So you won’t take Scrapper to tank. For condi you won’t take Scrapper, for power you won’t take Scrapper, for healing you won’t take engi in general. Sure, it can be used elsewhere but you can play anything else in pve that’s not instanced group content with anything. Hell, you can unequip traits and utility skills and still be able to do well in open world because it’s stupidly easy.

I’ve yet to meet someone who even picks Scrapper traitline for the traits alone and not for the hammer. I’d love it if Scrapper was another good tank alternative. Or support one even.

I agree that the elite specs shouldn’t be upgrades. But Scrapper in pve isn’t even a sidegrade. It’s closer to downgrade.

again, you arent getting what im saying. ill try again: im not comparing core spec vs elite spec. im saying that regardless of whether a certain trait line is core or elite, it will be useful in some circumstances and useless in others. and it should be like that.

since you seem to only want to discuss elite specs and dont accept a core spec as an example of a thing being useless under a condition, heres another one – druid. its pretty much the same condition as ps warrior, but the difference is you wont use the elite spec under the condition instead of a core spec – when you already have a druid in a group, you dont want another one and the 2nd ranger player is asked to respec to condi ranger because its a dps boost.

it happens all over. its just usually not with elite specs because theyre so op. and of course its always better if there is some use than no use, like using 1 ps warrior or 1 druid at a time. and i would say that that in fact should be a design goal, even though it means only 1-2 players get to fill that role in any given group its still creating a role to fill that makes people feel useful.

and i will say it for the 3rd time in this argument(?) that i feel like anet has moved too slow on elite specs and balance and has left us hanging. “i dont know about you” isnt something you need to be saying here, i very clearly agree. i dont really know why youre so combative.

Your druid example isn’t very good one. Druid’s spec is useful in all modes. Sure, it’s not good for every occasion and in some cases it’s worse than the core spec but it’s still good for each mode. Scrapper isn’t. That’s my whole point. I want an elite spec to be useful for each mode. I don’t want an elite spec to be good for every occasion, that would just be silly.

I agree with your claim that Anet has probably moved too slow on elite specs and balance. But suggesting that Anet should get faster with pumping out of the elite specs seems much less realistic to me than making the elite spec usable for each mode.

I’d agree if teammate targeting wasn’t so wonky. Currently you can res them faster by yourself than send f-gyro to do it.

ps warrior existed prior to HoT, when core specs were all there was. i realize its not an elite spec and thats why im throwing it out as an example of the design concept of making an entire trait line useless in 2/3 game modes, not as an example of an elite spec.

and im saying theyre going too slow with elite specs too. 2 years is too long to wait for a system that needs as much variety as theyve planned for it to have.

Again, core trait is different to elite spec trait. IMO they can’t be compared. Core trait line doesn’t unlock weapon or other skills. Core trait line doesn’t change elite spec mechanics (Besides Scrapper for pve ha ha…)

I however agree, we could use more elite specs but with the current situation, they could be at least more impactful and useful for all modes. And they are besides Scrapper (again). Reaper shroud, zerker state, new virtues, etc all are useful in all modes. Besides the Function Gyro. And if we’re getting new elite spec only each 2 years then they better be useful in all modes.

It’s been 5 years and engi is still stuck with kits and p/p, nothing really changed. I don’t know about you, I want change. And as a mostly pve player, it’s the most noticeable for engi IMO.

as an example, look at warrior. Warriors only take tactics in pve, and only if there are 2 or less warriors present. but it’s not a design mistake to have someone be a buff bot, just a choice. we could get rid of buff bots entirely too, and the game would be a little less interesting.

Comparing a core trait line with elite spec trait line is out of place. They’re not equal. All other elite specs and especially their mechanics are useful in all modes. Scrapper’s isn’t. This isn’t right.

when you have the choice of running 3-5 different elite specs, it’s not a bad thing for at least 1 of them to be irrelevant to whatever you are currently doing, cuz theres something else it’s better at.

Yeah, when we’ll have 3 elite specs. Let’s wait 2-4 more years to get a different playstyle and functionality. Pathetic.

My pve suggestions:

  • Rifle needs to be a real medium range power weapon, close range skills need rework
  • shield needs to scale better with power and provide more utility, maybe also get decreased cds
  • kits need to have some downside, because currently the other skills can’t really compete with 5-skill bundles
  • kits need to serve 1 purpose only – power dmg, condi dmg, defense, etc, not combination to promote using also other skills
  • turrets need to get better survivability + if player uses the boon trait, it needs to compete with other classes like herald – needs to be stronger
  • turrets need to scale with the player stats
  • function gyro needs additional pve functionality
  • gyros should not follow player but rather be stuck to player + return of dazes to them
  • medkit’s toolbelt skill needs to be moved to one of the 1 weapon skills and medkit needs complete redesign to become viable group healing tool
  • gadgets need either redesign or substantial buffs, for example to work good with SD, it could be an interesting build

i dont think thats a mistake. the mistake is in not being able to push out another elite spec for 2-3 years.

It’s not mistake that the elite spec is useless for one mode? You’ve got to be kidding me… And it’s not like they’re unable to push out another elite spec between the expansions. It’s the design choice to make it an expansion selling feature.

The problem with scrapper is that it didn’t change anything or added up anything to the Engineer’s core mechanics. You add a Res/Finisher for PVP and no extra toolbelt skill, no change in how turrets work, no change in weapon kits (not even a new weapon kit).
It is just an entirely new class with hammer and overpowered Auras for PVP.
What else do they use from engineer? Elixir Gun? Only to slow down enemies even.

It was a total afterthought of an elite spec. I wished the Gyro would only keep one Aura up at a time, being it so that the function Gyro would be wherever you wanted using the [F] key targeting alies or enemies and there it would do the one activated Gyro skill until you toggled it back by the same utility you used.
Then the other Gyro skills would be actives with cooldowns that you could use when that specific aura was not active.

That way you could be a zoner, like how they wanted Turrets to be. Only that this time you can move your zone of influence around freely and fight from far away if you wanted. Would be great because you could make fields with Mortar Kit anywhere and have the Gyro proc the spin finisher.

Instead of AI it should be controllable. Then we’d be good at back-lining too.

Second was putting out a traitline that barely even synergizes with its spec and it doesn’t work well with core traitlines. Nowadays engi takes Scrapper traitline because they want hammer, not because of the traits. Hammer was the only good part of the design IMO.

The other was not changing anything for engi with Scrapper in terms of changed gameplay and new functionality. If I don’t play pvp, function gyro is as useful as Evon Gnashblade’s flair from Cutthroat Politics. Don’t try to even talk about reviving, until I target my teammate, I can run to him and res him myself.

And another big problem is IMO that gyros weren’t improved, they were nerfed to the ground especially with the daze removal. They were bad thanks to the stupid AI and wonky pathing from the start and they made them even worse.

If the next engi spec won’t drastically change the way we play engi and we’ll be stuck with the same old kit build again then I guess, I’ll look for a different profession. And I can’t believe I say that when I’ve been maining engi since vanilla and have couple of thousand of hours of playtime with this profession.

Medkit usage?

It’s quite underwhelming in comparison to other healing skills. Most of the time the best pick is healing turret. In some cases you may decide to pick elixir or healing gyro but medkit currently has no use because everything at the disposal is better.

I agree that losing the toolbelt would cause us to lose one of our defining mechanics. Hopefully the elite spec would not change us having these available. I was more basing my idea around a solar cell charging; the way the captured energy could be utilised was my point of speculation. I was thinking that it could be our “F” key that activates the additional skill bar (kit) and using the skills might remove energy. This would still enable our toolbelt skills to be active.

Replacing core mechanics is what elite specializations do. They change core mechanics for new functionality while providing new way to approach combat for a profession. It would be nice if engi got finally something new and useful for all game modes that would change the 5 year old playstyle. (I’m looking at you Function Gyro, you useless piece of kitten)

Good for you but something being obvious or logical doesn’t guarantee it being so. This is basically a confirmation of it actually being main hand so it deserves a mention IMO.

I just realized an important thing.

Each spec artwork is facing to the right or to the front in the unlock window however if we check the real, correct facing on the full artwork from HoT, which had exactly the same facing as the vanilla one, we can say that engi is definitely getting a MAIN HAND sword.

I doubt that they’ll go in a different way with this expansion so the new artwork with all specs will have exactly same facing as the previous ones and this helps us determine for real whether MH or OH shall be used.

Nerfing kits wouldn’t get you the result you’re looking for though…

I wasn’t talking about nerf though. I was talking about redesign of them. I don’t want kits to be nerfed. they’re the only decent utilities we have. But they need redesign IMO so that they’re not the only good option.

I can’t believe I say it but IMO the purity of purpose of the kits needs to be narrowed down. Each kit should serve a different purpose IMO. For example:

  • Bomb kit-close combat power dmg
  • Flamethrower kit-close combat condi dmg
  • Grenade kit-ranged condi dmg
  • Tool kit-defense and tanking
  • Med kit-group heal
  • Mortar kit-long range hybrid dmg

This could be IMO first step in the kit redesign. But that won’t be enough. It’s very difficult to make other skills as good as skill bundles that kits are. Kits need to get some downside in comparison to other utilities. Or the new elite spec mechanic needs to be based around supporting of the use of 1-skill utilities. There are many options and yet still it’s very delicate.

But something needs to be done with the kits or we’ll be stuck with the same builds for another 5 years.

Strange, pre-HoT I ran a 3 kit Nade/EG/FT build with power gear. As HoT approached condi became viable with sinister gear and the rework to conditions. We also gained mortar kit and the current 4 kit build came out. HoT gave us quickness/alacrity which put that build into overdrive to actually play. Rocket boots is a solid alternative especially on mobile enemies, if we got a rework to gadgets it might see a lot more use. The same can be said for Flame Turret, if turrets got a real upgrade in functionality that might also get a chance to sit in the spotlight.

But, if things stay like they are for condi builds for 4 more years that’d be fine by me. I’m hoping we have other roles open up for different play styles. I want to see a damage/support build like warrior has, or a healing/support build like druid, and maybe a damage/healing build. I want to see meaningful growth in the area that Engineers are supposed to excel, versatility, not change just for the sake of change.

Funny how when you mention other non-kit skills that are solid, you always add something like “if they get rework/upgrade”.

It’s great that you’re satisfied with the current meta. I on the other hand would finally like a viable build that doesn’t use a kit. I’d like a gadget based build or elixir one,, or even a turret one or gyro based one in pve. I’d like a build that uses rifle as a weapon, not just something that fills the weapon slot. Or how about a shield?

I’m sick of kits. I’m sick of pistols. And I’m sick of AA spam that’s the basis of the power build. I had enough of their usage for almost 5 years. If you’re satisfied, more power to you. Me? I’m bored and I want different options than those that have barely changed since vanilla.

Somebody in other thread quite accurately pointed out that recent turret change made turrets independent from our tool belt. I am 100% sure it’s a step towards elite spec that changes how tool belt works. I’m fairly sure we’ll get something in place of tool belt.

Yes, they just need to move toolbelt skill for medkit to utility slot or one of medkit skills because it’s the heal for player and they’ll be able to replace toolbelt completely with something else. I hope it happens and that it will be something useful.

Condi removal just with alchemy line? Tell me a other source of condi removal SKILL of the engineer, except healing turret.
Engineers are not attracted to healing turret, there is simply no alternative.

AED for example. Or how about the toolbelt of Supply Crate?

AED, too situational, no included condi removal unlike healing turret. Very unreliable,
Supply crate? Are you kittening kidding me? It does not heal directly, but with healkits, which positioning is bugged as hell and too situational, can be picked up by others and a cd of 60 seconds, but I give you that. Engineer just has useless garbage as elites, so it won’t really matter to take Supply Crate, since you are not really loosing anything important.

You asked for skill examples. I provided those. Just because they’re situational doesn’t change the fact that they remove conditions.
