As far as auto attack being our highest damage…im not so sure what you mean. There are plenty of burst skills, and even condi skills spread out across our weapons, which of course you have to use properly. Is this what you meant by timing?
When it comes to other classes like Mesmers and Thieves – those who can afford to play power build thanks to their utility – you can see their damage pattern.
Mesmers can go boom with Mind Wreck (F1), they can go boom with GS 2>4>3, they can use sword 3>3>2 … And they can choose depending on the situation they are in. Every single one of these hurts. The same thing goes for Rogues. They go in, blow some numbers and initiative and then decide whether they’ll stay on offensive using stuns blinds or Stealth abilities – or retreat via multiple possibilities as stealth or ports.
What can a ranger do? Use 5>2 from longbow and that’s it. 25 seconds of auto attacking has begun. Rangers does not really have any retreat button. Rangers have several skirmishing tools, but none to escape or pressure enemy further. Greatsword is just not deadly enough.
Ranger once in a skirmish can merely use sword that can either spam auto-attack or roll around doing nothing (misses most of the time and poison damage is low).
What about Short Bow? You can jump around, slow people, daze/stun people… And where’s the damage? It’s auto-attacking again.
There’s nothing like “NOW’S MY TIME TO STRIKE” as ranger. You jump around hoping that your enemy dies faster than you.
And most of the time – using your utility like Fear/Roots in order to keep people at a position where you can spam auto-attacks. And by timing I meant using these utility tools at a time where they don’t get cleansed because if this fails – so does your damage.Regarding power builds – If you have no cooldowns you have to spam 1 for 8 seconds. And nothing else is there to do for your damage. 8 seconds of nothing.
That is also a reason why are Rangers hated for pushing PvE with Point Blank shot and other classes are not. Rangers are the only class that gets bored by dealing damage. Because your highest DPS comes from auto-attacks.
Shortbow is not a power weapon. Its for condi bleed stacks and poison. And theres a legit PVP build for ranger, its called tanky/regen trap condi which is far superior than the longbow #2 spamming nonsense that gets owned by anyone whos remotely competent.
And to the OP: Ranger sucks balls at dungeon PVE
so theres no way you can predict whether it’ll hit or not? nice skill anet I’m impressed
pets are terribly dumb A.I, and they are more often of a liability than an asset. Those who say otherwise have clearly not done end game dungeons and fractals. Your. Pet. Will. Die. And your damage will be kitten. Theres no way to directly control their pathing. A few hits/cleaves from an elite mob already kills them. And if your pet cant deal dps most of the time your damage is so crippled
hey mate, just here to tell you that there is no official “end game” content in this game at this point.
There has been a CDI on the topic, which i think ended up with “raids” being the requested endgame format. Please refrain from referring to content that does not officially exist and rather then spending time whining, find a proper pet selection for the proper occasion.
I do not deny that there is situations where maintaining pets health is seriously hard, but you have two pets, and it should be in most cases, possible to avoid, tank or protect them from most of the incoming damage.
…its very obvious you dont play hardcore pve (aka endgame). Do you melee on ranger? no? If you read through the thread you’d see there are many other players with the same problem. Optimal dps on ranger is melee. In melee your pet does kitten except stay dead 90% of the time. And dont tell me to “please refrain” from voicing my opinions.
Tanking damage for my pet?? why would you even do that instead of continuing dps on boss? Tell me, which dungeon or fractal do you play? So your suggestions are to be a dead weight to the party?
“sorry guys for not dealing dps i’m gonna stay here and cuddle my pet so it doesnt die in 1 hit”
(edited by monepipi.5160)
if they do not reply you in 3 days you should post in the thread given above…(tickets for review)
good luck
Why remove animations??? also please give the more feminine walk animation back. This is ridiculous. I picked a FEMALE character not a MALE or BUTCH character

Condi is mainly for pvp, its terrible in pve because even if you do massive condi damage, your stack will be replaced near instantly by someone who isnt specced in condi. Everyone has skills that inflict burning, bleed or poison, they’ll override you. Not to mention the bleed cap. So in reality you’ll be lucky to get 2,3 ticks of your own condi dmg on the boss. This is not ‘berserker elitism’, just how the game mechanics work.
But of course, if you want to be a dead weight to your party and reinforce the stereotype that rangers are useless, go ahead. There is a place for condi ranger, its just not in party pve.
P.S ditch the greatsword, it sucks for condi. Axe/torch or Axe/dagger or Axe/horn is way better. Also 1k condi is too low.
LB is generally terrible for pvp because a lot of classes have great gap closers and CC, and a full zerker LB is so glassy it shatters in 1 hit. LB is workable in wvw, but in spvp it is a hard sell. (as others pointed out, due to the smaller spaces). Its so slow and awkward up close, thats why people are forced to run GS so they can bail out of melee fights.
That said I have met good pvping rangers who use the LB. But they are very few and far between. Most just get demolished. IMHO SB is far better for skirmishing and PVP.
asura, the small size gives quite an advantage in messy pvp situations, its also easier to hide yourself in some corner to heal up when you are taking too much damage.
People always focus the big fat norn warrior 1st : )
This a troll thread?
why would you WANT to decrease teamwork? thats making the game more shallow and braindead. People play MMOs for the interaction, this is not Skyrim or some RPG
This must be a troll thread.
Trapper 0/30/30/10/0 build is sooo fun to play….plus its pretty tough (bar conditions) with all the rabid gear and you can take a lot of punishment while going in and out of skirmishes. IMO its far more fun than running a glass cannon zerker or bunker. But like mentioned trap build has weakness VS heavy conditions (ironically) due to low hp pool, amongst other things.
This shouldn’t even be called a dungeon. its just a hallway + rooms with mines and 1 single mob.
*The mines are an absolute nightmare for rangers. * Pets trigger it, and since theres no way to control the exacts paths of pets, the mines explode whenever the stupid pet runs over them to you. And since we cannot perma stow the pet, its absolute frustration. Its like the people who designed this bloody thing didn’t think it through. Surely you cannot forget there are players with pets. Its half of the ranger class.
Disappointed with this 1 mob “dungeon”
..You can jump right into tPvP (like 5 man arena) or sPvP (like small battlegrounds) to test out your builds ..
I understand that you might be just trying to help, but,
Please dont advise him to go straight into tPVP, where sPVP is more than enough to get a feel of your class. It is very, very inconsiderate to test out builds in tPVP, where people are actively trying to win/get points. You testing out a new build could very well mean making your team lose. Its a serious place for serious business.
Again, tPVP is NOT for testing, please, go to sPVP instead.

Elementalist/ Mesmer. Both are fun and quite “magic” feeling.
I did melandru today (starting from defending the landing site phase), got 24 pieces of loot (blues, greens) and 6 bags. Also some tier 5 mats. Not that much worse than what you get from a dungeon and this takes far less time. I don’t consider it to be bad loot.
I did Melandru last night and got no drops. Did Melandru the night before and got no loot. Only loot I got was from the chests.
Did lyssa today and got no drops.
Neither case is the DR in effect because I ported into the area from another map to start the chain.
No point to these events if the only loot is from the chests. Too much time and I do not like the events. I don’t really care for any of the temple events really and only did them for the loot.
No point to running them at all now.
This is also one of the reasons I dislike RNG. I worked for something but not getting anything that I can use except vendor trash that only amounted to about 25 silver while others can pull a whole bunch of stuff and and make a gold. I put in just as much effort, sometimes more since I started the chain and many just show up for the last boss fight, and yet my reward is very much diminished and I haven’t even been in the area running other events. I find CoF runs more fun than these events and CoF is booring.
Sounds like the game you want to play is “Mindless Grind Simulator 1.0”. You know, sometimes people do events for the story (oh, yes), or for something different. I’ll much rather do a temple event than to run COF. I hate that place. I don’t need to have optimal gold rates in everything I do, because I play gw2 to enjoy it. Not as a job.
Condi build totally wrecks in roaming. Many a player underestimate how painful those bleed, poison, and burning stacks can be. And when they try to flee, the SB’s bleed and cripple will down them 90% of the time.
‘keeping them passive’
As I’ve said a hundred times by now, rangers NEED a buff when their pets are dead- killing my pet has made me angry ‘I WILL AVENGE YOU’, which will increase bow damage by 30% until your pet is alive again, which would make up for the fact you have lost 50% of your damage.
I’m sorry, but this will break PVP. Part of fighting against a ranger is having the option of killing the pet to cripple the ranger. If this is actually the case (pet dead = ranger stronger than before), the amount of “rangers are OP” QQ threads will cause us to get a massive nerf hammer again.
So my thief just downed a ranger.
….the rangers pet interrupts me, then starts chasing me around as I try and kill it.….
Hahaha, why on earth would you go for the pet now? Do you even PVP? just finish the ranger and be done with it. This is so silly…no offense, but you deserved to lose that fight.
Edit: On a side note, thieves can still stealth stomp. Oh how I wish i can stealth stomp too. Many a times I have been stomped by decent thieves while they’re stealthed. And my pet can’t help me here.
(edited by monepipi.5160)
Risen has always been like this. Always. Even way way back they were like this. I actually like it that you can’t just /automode in Orr. Who wants to play a game where all the enemies behave the same? that sounds boring tbh.
You forgot rangers and traited LB is the ONLY player attack capable of hitting at 1800 range. That is majorly huge in WvW.
LB’s attack speed cannot be fast, at least not as fast as SB’s. You’re trading speed for range. The 2 bows fill different roles, you cannot buy a pickup and complain that it is not as fast as a ferrari. Have you guys actually been in WvW? That would break it, everyone will be running rangers in WvW, which there is already a huge presence of rangers.
The attack speed is currently 1.25s, i’m almost 100% positive that is THE LONGEST auto attack speed in the game, and no it wouldn’t -break- the skill because you aren’t going to be as fast as a shortbow, you’ll be a hell of a lot faster but that shortbow is still going to outshoot you, and thus out crit you/proc you.
Longbow is supposed to trade speed for slower bigger numbers, which it does, but it’s trading too much speed atm if you’re going for a damage standpoint.

Good Patch.
Seeing some of the negative comments here, it seems like there is really no way to please everyone….rolls eyes. Any improvement is better than no improvement. Balancing all classes and mechanics is a tricky thing.

another point to add: power crit rangers HAVE to stay on target to do their dps. In sticky situations, a condition ranger can just lay out many traps and aoe condition stacks and kite the swarm of mobs, letting the ticks eat away. Coupled with frost traps, healing and high toughness skirmishing is not an issue.
@Grimvar
geez, elitist much? So anyone not running your build “doesn’t know how to play”?
Trap condition rangers, while they might lack burst, is actually very viable. What trap rangers excel in is multi-target sustained damage and survivability (high toughness). You can argue about the stack cap or w/e, but in 5 man dungeons that will not come into the picture that often unless you run with >3 other people who are also condition built. The aoe capabilities that comes with this build is pretty sweet. Whats a squishy power crit ranger gonna do when swarmed? barrage? and when that is on CD, then what? in tight space you’ll never have the range to play LB properly. I was power crit but I got kinda sick of having to kite all the time. Trap rangers excel in that kind of environment. Throw 10, 15 mobs at him and he’ll eat everything up with traps.
Just switch to a sustained damage/support build or condi traps. SB is better anyway.
The amount of healing SnR gives is terrible. Like really. It ticks for like 10-15 with a 85 sec CD, if I’m not wrong.
85 seconds?? thats more than some elite skills. They could certainly cut like 20-30 secs off it, and boost the healing a bit. After all it does take up a slot, and the pet isn’t doing anything else while in SnR. Effectively while the pet is healing a significant chunk of the ranger’s dps is taken away.
GS’s maul does 3 stacks of bleed, which pales in comparison to Axe + dagger (5+3 =8 stacks). Plus you get chill, weakness and poison. Or you can use axe + torch which will give you burning.
yes please, please add a preview function
You want us to buy transmute stones, give us a preview function so we can look at them skinsss
Fotm is the correct step forward for dungeons…making it fun, and not just X trash mobs + tank’n’spank boss
Thank you all those who worked on this
Just went to check….yup…the npc’s gone. Along with the rest of the merchants at that camp.
There’s one legendary item available and this is weapon currently. This is still at exotic level but it will become ascended level once ascended weapons are available I hear.
small unimaginative dungeon
Fractals is amazing – 9 unique environments, EPIC raid worthy bosses – this is the experience I bought the game for
a boss that freezes you,
a Jelly fish that makes adds,
a giant face that you pick up an item to reflect his super lazer
a dude that vanishes and then throws an axe
a boss where you need to stand near a fire
a boss that’s tank and spank and randomly insta kills party members3 of these mechanics are handled by one wow raid boss actually already Hodir.
to bad mmo’s in 2000 had better boss mechanics. NES ninja gaiden had better mechanics.
Environments are amazing guild wars 2 art direction, and animations in my opinion are top in the industry.
You are just hating for no reason. And your bullet points actually sounds like you’re selling FOTM. They sound awesome. FOTM is the most fun dungeon in GW2 by far.
thieves are OP ; warriors have issues
Anyone saying otherwise is not being honest with you.
anyway, you can pvp with a lvl 2 char, so switching and trying out classes takes minimal effort, really.
Popular : Mes, Ele, Guard, Thief
Least: Engineer?
For leveling, just spread between Marksmanship, Skirmishing, and Beastmastery (at least 10) for common power crit build. Theres no hard rule in the order, just put in points as you see fit. Respeccing is cheap too, so feel free to experiment.
Try swapping out warhorn for dagger or torch, and use spike traps (low cd)
$60 = ~8 movies = ~16 hours
$60 = skyrim = a few days/weeks of entertainment
$60 = GW2 = ~3 months worth of playtime already
Seriously some of you guys complain as though the folks at ANET owe you 1 million dollars, everyone else is enjoying the new content——FOTM is so much fun, thumbs up to whoever made it. It plays like a puzzle game without hordes of trash mobs. Awesome. <3
Rangers ARE viable in PVP, the problem is theres not much viable build variety.
I love love love this new dungeon!! props to whoever made them, so fun!
Annoyingly no. Reuse would be a far more enjoyable option and might actually encourage more people to buy it. Instead majority of people will probably stay away from it because of it.
Stones aren’t that expensive. If you can afford the costumes, the stones isn’t much.
IMO full traited traps benefit condition builds much more.
Please tell me more, how a Two-Handed Sword is more natural to a ranger then a rifle.
Just think about it… Range…r…. Range. What come to your mind after hearing it? Rangers should specialize on range. Maybe sometimes going in to melee. All I see is many people with rangers in melee.
No, “Ranger” does not mean it must be ranged. Thats not the definition of ranger. A ranger here is more of a wanderer whos in tune with nature. What comes to my mind is Aragorn, and he carries a greatsword.
Aragorn is a strider as they call him. He is skilled in it but he is not one. Look for legolas…
Haha you know guys I luv the fact that ANET has actually said, they are keeping the Ranger with the bows due to the lore….ok..but listen here ANET..what type of games have you been playing where a WARRIOR OUT DAMAGES A RANGER WITH A FECKING BOW?!!?!…let alone actually having to use a bow is NOT in a fantasy based class….hunters on WoW uses guns..what can’t ours?
Because this isn’t WOW?? And hunter= / = ranger
I’ve played a hunter in WOW. But I really don’t see the need for rifle here.
A warrior doesn’t have a pet. Of cos in a vacuum without the pet and other stuff he’s going to do more damage than you.
To me it doesn’t seem right that a warrior – does more damage at range than a ranger.
He has heavy armor + range + good range damage. He actually could fight almost always at range. To me a warrior has to stay where he belongs: heave armor : melee. As written here: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/ranger/
“…Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows…” It doesn’t seem to be that at the moment.
From Wiki:
“…Archery is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow, from Latin arcus. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat…”So archery includes hunting as well. You lose.
Yes, because GW2 should be like every other MMO? -.- So boring! A warrior’s LB has a different role when compare to the ranger’s LB. I don’t see why you feel the need to quote wiki to state nothing at all. Find me a warrior that uses a bow in PVP, since its obviously so superior. Don’t forget ranger has 300 more range than the warrior always, and the rest of the ranger’s skills are built for a skirmish playstyle (more support). You’re tunnel visioned when you focus on things in a vacuum; your argument doesn’t hold water.
I’m very sorry to hear that but honestly, being handicapped means you’re handicapped. This means certain things are either far more difficult or simply impossible. Maybe your brother could ask a blind person how he feels about never even playing a video game? Maybe ask a paraplegic what he thinks of GW2?
I don’t want to sound rude, but in this case there’s not much you can do. TS in WvW and dungeons is virtually required for serious play. He does have the option of starting a guild for deaf players (an option which blind players don’t have) and it might be pretty successful.
We all have our fair share of trouble in life, and I’ve personally learned to suck it up and either go for it best I can or completely ignore the impossible. What you can’t do is blame others for wanting a talkative guild and because of that require TS.
On the other hand, Nihilum had a deaf player as main tank for a while. Hard work really can overcome everything. Chin up and take responsibility.
I know you’re just being straightforward…but the thing is it shouldn’t be that hard to make things more convenient for them. Instead of “red”, make the circles “black”, so its tonal based rather than colour based. There, solved!
It’ll really be great if they implement something to help out colourblind folks here. Remember, a little extra goodwill will do wonders for PR :].
Also, let us have the option of changing the colour of the cursor. Its brown, the ground is often brown, when things get messy its very hard to find it.
Pets like the Lynx and Jaguar does great DPS…they’re more squishy but they hit for a lot more. For a power build you might be interested in the Jungle Stalker/ Red Moa. Ranged pets like spiders and devourers can be useful in dungeons as well, since they tend to survive longer. For PVP go hounds, their knockdown is awesome. You can also go birds for their burst DPS, plus they have less problems hitting moving targets.
@King Jon
Bears can tank for a short while in dungeons, provided you have at least some points in beastmastery. (I run with 10) For PVP, you can use the brown bear to cleanse CC for you (etc immobilise).
No, you should get the kill as well, if you’ve dealt damage.
I laugh at rifle warriors on my ranger. Just sayin
Yeap, I suppose you must have a little humor to take getting one shotted all the time by them. Props to you.
If you ever get hit by kill shot or a full volley, you either bad, blind or CC’ed. There’s this thing called “dodge” in this game, you know?
Also, OP, if you delete a character just because it isn’t the most powerful, then the character is probably not meant for you. If you like playing the class and its mechanics you wouldn’t be so bothered and hastily dispose of it. Maybe you should just go roll a warrior.
