I do miss how pets can attack on the move in that game, they really feel like an extension of your character. But GW2 ranger just feels more agile and intuitive in combat—partly due to less skill clutter and how the combat mechanics work in GW2.
The axe is fine now imo. In fact, its great now. GS and LB are the weapons that needs more tweaking.
Right now as it is, an engagement with a thief isn’t fun. Only for the thief. Every time I get jumped by a thief, I give a silent sigh and proceed to pop my defensive CDs so I won’t die in 2 seconds (even though I have close to 1.9k toughness). If my CD happens to be up, I’m effectively gone. Not only that, the thief will just stealth stomp you. Its not like fighting warriors or mesmers.
Imagine a new player, trying out SPVP. He’s going to get so frustrated and maybe even stop playing PVP all together. Balance will bring more skill- and fun to SPVP. Less cheap burst and more substained and “skill required” damage. Then perhaps we won’t see like 8 thieves in a match, or everyone running bunker builds.
Hello ,
Thanks for the replies. Ive decided to go rampager due to my trap based build. I was wondering what hp value should a decent ranger have. What if i concentrate more on PvE ? Should i still concern myself on getting several gears with vit ? Or can i carry on being a glass cannon ?
Finally , thanks for the replies. I do read all of them as well as read up more on the game. Am fairly new to MMOs. Happy GW2-ingRegards

Its viable being a glass cannon for PVE, as long as you are more careful. It’s just that you might run into some survivability issues during some dungeons/ high level areas. Sometimes during dungeon speed runs many parties choose to skip trash mobs, so you might have to eat a hit…or several.
You think you can outrun us centaurs?? ahahahaha * evil laughter *
You think its bad, wait till you get to higher levels. Risen everywhere.
3 most common things in Tyria:
Centaurs
Risen
Butter

I wouldn’t mind if the frequency was decreased (like one every 6 hrs), the difficulty increased, BUT the drop quality also increased. Right now, these dragon events are too easy. Its just going with the zerg and semi afking for 10 mins, and then right click on the chest. It’ll be more epic if it was a rarer event, harder challenge, and better loot.
Lol @ all the people complaining about their MF misfortunes. If you choose to play MF, don’t whine and cry when you lose. We all know the chances of getting a precursor from the MF is exceedingly low. We all know this. If you spend 200+ g throwing exotics/rares for the sole purpose of getting X precursor, you can only blame yourself for misjudgement if you don’t get it. You know, from the moment you started to buy all those junk exotics to throw into the MF, that you might not get the item you are going for. You played the MF hoping to get lucky. It was your call.
Yea I got this one time too. But I was harvesting it while tanking hits from monsters. Maybe thats the reason? " I can’t chop well, a zombie is hitting my face"
Erm…Runescape’s PVP
(joking , obviously)
Why not WoW? Burning Crusade era PVP got it right, so did their battlegrounds, such great fun. Its only after Cata you get the much too imbalanced overpowered heals that made pvp a snooze fest.
Also, DOTA is very balanced. Very.
Maybe characters in stealth should have a faint shadow or blurring if you stand close to them. Like the Predator in the movies. Right now it doesnt feel like stealth. Right now a more accurate term to call it would be total invisibility. The thief is harry potter on crack, you can’t see him even though he’s getting hit by your attacks.
Well, you can sell it by mail..but theres no COD in this game. You’ll have to take a very big risk. That or pay the TP’s 15% tax.
Besides their 0.5 sec combo, which melts any other class of glass cannon, thieves have such good running away options. If they backstab you and fail—they will just stealth and run away. They dont pay a price. Theres no risk. Its not like there is actual detection in this game (aside from my traps, but thats because I’m a ranger. still, it strangely doesnt reveal them.. even though they have sprung my traps and are taking damage). In games like WoW (sorry, I just have to), if a thief (rogue) backstabs someone and fails, he’ll most likely end up like roadkill.
80% of crafted armour and weapons look terrible, tbh. Even the lvl 80 exotic ones. The 80 exo weapons look just like lvl 10 blues.
I guess its to urge you to go for alternate skins. Skins are the “end game gear grind” here.
@Schnuffles
Looks like you’ve never actually fought a competent opponent before.. The closer they get, the less damage you do, and the further you are the easier it is for them to dodge our painfully slow arrow travel. Full berserkers would mean you run around with 15k HP, that’s 1 Kill Shot crit + 1-2 auto attacks.
Kill shot is easy to dodge as long as you see the warrior kneeling. The more common thing would be thieves will just killing you in 0.5 seconds. You won’t even get to see them unstealth. 2 seconds later you’ll just see a death screen that says “12k backstab damage”
@ Haziq
For condition, you can either go rampager ( power/precision/condition- more of a glass cannon type) or carrion (condition/power/vit – tankier, less crit but more condition damage). A even more specialised armour set would be to run dungeons like Twilight Arbor/ Honour of the Waves for tokens and get the Precision/Toughness/Condition set and rune it with Rune of the Undead (adds 5% of toughness to condition damage). This set gives very good survivability and having a high precision helps when your weapons are upgraded with Sigil of Earth (chance to bleed when you crit). The drawback is that you’ll have terrible normal damage though. But if you’re running traps mobs will just melt with the amount of condition damage you’ll have.
Dont spend your karma for rare weapons. Karma takes very long to farm up, but you can buy 80s rare for cheap off the TP (like 20s ea)
The LB needs a buff. And some tweaks. Maybe even a overhaul. Right now its too slow and boring to use; not only that, it does very mediocre damage. Using a LB is just watching your ranger fire slowly and pressing 2 when its up.
The other pressing thing is the pet pathing and slow F2 response though. Against a moving target our dps effectively drops 30%. Unless you use ranged pets, but their dps is kinda sucky, so you’re losing out.
For PVE I use Axe/Torch with the viper and spike traps. That way you can easily stack all 3 conditions fast (burn poison bleed). Its wonderful aoe damage. Dagger is a good weapon but its more for single target/pvp imo. QZ is okay for the 3rd slot I guess.
Yet another Temple of Balthazar event attempt that ended in failure and rage...
Posted by: monepipi.5160
Yes—dodge—but when you have so many people and aoes all over the place, it gets kinda laggy. 1 half second mistake and you’re down and out.
I’ve never seen a successful Balth attempt, tbh. His healing is a kick to the face, especially if you got him to like ~15% HP——so close!!! 2 mins more?? gogogogo
Then he heals up and everyone wipes. Nothing but a 5s repair bill everytime, lol.
@ isendel
Well…..you mainly play mesmer (lol okay)…. and a thief….so…you saying l2p isnt saying anything much, when you are using the 2 of the most played class in spvp. Maybe if you were to play like, idk..a spirit ranger, then you can say “thieves arent imba l2p”
@ lurkin
Lemme guess
Bunker ele
Bunker guardian
Bunker bomb kit engineer
Anti bunker necro
If you arent playing a thief, you have to go tanky to survive., because any non thief glass cannon will get 1 shot by thieves. That or roll a mesmer.
Dagger is awesome in PVP.
If you can outlast our burst we’re pretty much dead.
Haha, please….you thieves would just stealth and run away. What dying is there?
I really don’t know WHY they would fix something that wasn’t broken. And actually break it. It has been bugging me as well. What was wrong with the old window?
+1000 internets to you, tyvm
Well, congratulations! lol….go outside and take a walk or something—
I do hope they fix the footprints issue, it’ll be kinda bad if they don’t. If I was you I’d spam anet everyday.
Make masculine versions to go with the girly looking Legendary's for us men please

The bows are really lacking. The Dreamer looks like an event joke weapon. Why do some weapons look so badass and others look like plastic toys? There should be some design consistency across the whole legendary range. They should inspire awe and feel legendary, not just amuse people for like 10 mins.
Also, the amount of effects and general polish varies from weapon to weapon. This shouldn’t be the case.
Guardian or warrior is good, you can tank for her while she dps safely.
But, just play what class you want, really…. the most important thing is to have fun in a game.
The legendaries are definitely skewed in favour of the GS. Its obvious they had received a lot of kind loving attention, while everything else is sort of semi-meh. They even have more choices.
The bows are a joke. The GSes are so kitten and have so much effects, but the bows look terribly over feminine. Kudzu doesnt look at impressive at all. A special gripe would be the dreamer. A pony bow shooting rainbows? Is this a legendary or a joke weapon to troll people? The least anet could have done is give another option for the shortbow. You want a pony bow? go ahead. You want a legit looking one? nope, no luck. The current pony rainbow bow would be entertaining for like 2 hrs. After that you’ll look like a kitten and wonder why you spent all that gold and hours working for it.
Switch to Axe. Theres a reason why you can use it. Mobs running after you? 5 stack bleed stack to da face. Traited spike traps with lynx pet. Dagger or torch offhand. I can stack bleeds like crazy.
The SB isnt a magic button.
Axe/ torch with traps work very well in medium sized group farming. For the big zergs in Orr, you should try having a LB to switch to for barrage, since mobs die so fast there is no time for you to throw traps.
I dont even need to dodge. I just put down traps switch to S/T drop down more fire and tank them.
Its so fun seeing thiefs blowing up themselfs while I tank all their damage. I dont even have defensive ultitlies just 3 traps and entangle.
No “Protect Me”? No dodge? able to eat the entirety of a thief’s burst chain? I’m sorry, but I dont buy that. He will kill you before your traps kill him. Maybe you’ve played against a lousy thief. Condition damage needs time to burn through HP, you have to drag the fight out a bit. Traps ranger is the only build rangers have that works against thieves though. Yes, its funny when they think our traps don’t hurt.
But, why is it that every match has 6 or more thieves? Something has to be broke for numbers to be so skewed. Its not a healthy sign when half of the players in a map are playing the same class.
IMO the healing now is good as it is. Last thing people want—last thing we want is a situation where healers can outheal any DPS. It drags fights into long boring stalemates, and its very frustrating to play when you’re DPS. Very. It will ruin PVP, like what happened in WOW after the release of Cata.
Every match I go into, I see at LEAST 6 thieves. In a 16 player match. Thats almost 40%. This game has 8 classes.
Does this look like a healthy, balanced game to you? when close to half of the players in sPVP are playing thieves?
My condi trap ranger has 1860 toughness, close to 3k armour and 15k hp. I’m not a glass cannon. A thief can lock and drop me in ~ 2 seconds, or at least take away like 80% of my hp. NO other class can do this, the burst damage is abit too ridiculous. If I see the thief coming, its okay as I can protect myself with my traps. But when you run around a corner and a stealthed thief instantly downs you, it just feels very, very cheap. Another issue for me is they can vanish into stealth and finish me off while I’m downed—and theres nothing I can do about it. I cant send my pet after him to KD, I can’t interrupt his cast, I can’t bleed him and hope to bring him down along with me.
Mesmers are fun to play against (although a tad annoying, lol). So are guardians and warriors. Necros are hard to kill, but its still good and fun fights. Good elementalists are very challenging. Thieves…thieves just feel cheap.

If you can’t craft, don’t spend money buying lv 80 exotic from the TP (well unless you have lots of gold to burn). Just run dungeons using much cheaper rares. A weapon needs around 200-300 tokens, you can easily get that in a few days. Not to mention dungeons give good money and if you’re lucky, rares or even exotics. Save gold for your lv 80 exotic accessories, since there’s no token exchange for them—only way is to craft or buy them off TP. A full set is rather costly, each one will cost ~1.8g-2.5g

If you mention that using the SB to the fullest potential, you need to be behind the target, don’t forget you also need to have the LB at a max range to pretty much TRY to match SB’s damage output. More often than not, you’ll be hard pressed to have such luxury. Good luck trying to solo in Orr, or PVP with the LB. A ranger with a LB in PVP is pretty much free food—-its too slow, people will zerg you. Its only good role is in WvW or tagging mobs with barrage while loot farming.
@Guilhermezz.2601
I run this for PVE, 10/30/20/0/10. Get the improved traps (throwable, 2x area, 2x duration). The 10 points in BM is so that the pet is more durable and not useless. Theres a trait in power that turns on your Keen Edge when you drop below 75%, and theres a trait in precision that gives you a chance to bleed everytime you crit .
For PVP I would suggest 10/30/25/0/5.
sigil of earth/rune of the undead.
This. If you’re running pure condition, TA and HOTW equipment gives condition dmg/precision/toughness. High crit chance with sigil of earth gives good bleed stacking. Rune of Undead on your armour gives even more condition damage and survivability and adds 5% of your toughness into condition damage. You might also want to try swapping out the WH for torch or dagger, to stack even more conditions, since that will be your main source of damage.
Currently I run double sigil of corruption (for fast stacks) and a sigil of speed, but once I get 100% geared up I’ll be switching to double earth/corruption
(edited by monepipi.5160)
Pigs are pretty durable, but their F2 is useless. I don’t see the point in it…yeah it can be fun and interesting but I’d rather use a pet with a solid F2 and just go to work immediately. If I need a tank, bears are perfect. If I want great bleeds cats and birds are the ones to go for. For utility and KD, wolves are great. TBH pigs are in the middle of nowhere, and until they get more love from ANET (why do all pigs have the same F2??) , I don’t think people will pick them much. Every other class of pets have their own special niche.
If you’re running a glass cannon LB/SB build, Orr can be highly frustrating. The worst zone is Cursed Shores. The mobs ignore your pet, and some run as fast as you—-they will go straight for you. It is a pain trying to kite them. There are mobs that immobilise you, mobs that pull you to them, mobs that knock you down. You just have to be aware of where you are and what you engage. Due to the number of spawns, you can easily aggro another mob while you’re kiting your first. That said, I currently run a highly survivable condition dmg/toughness/precision trap build with SB/axe/torch and I have no problems farming in Orr. I was glass cannon built before that, but I just got sick of kiting every single mob. Don’t worry too much about it, when you reach Orr you’ll find out what works and what doesn’t. Dont be afraid to experiment with new builds.
I agree with all your points. In some pets the F2 takes a ridiculously long time to perform. Long animation, no priority…. you can’t rely on them to save your life. Not to mention they’ll stop in the middle of their tracks to cast it. Half the time in PVP the pet is just running after targets doing nothing.
For dungeons, only the bear/devourers are viable. Everything else dies in 2-3 hits.
If its a gang of warriors/guardians/thieves don’t even bother. Even if you have super high toughness, its pretty much game over once they all jump on you and start pummelling.
I report every bot I see and every gold spammer as well. I will continue to do so without fail for as long as I play the game. They ruin every game they touch.
This. Bots piss me off. Sometimes I wish I can open PK them.
Longbow is too slow and boring for me. Honestly the shortbow is much better, unless you doing WvW and need the range.
For PVE and PVP, I go with SB and axe/dagger or axe/torch if I really need that much AOE (like AC path 1). With a lynx/hawk pet and traited traps I can stack ~16 stacks of bleeding in 2 secs. Also, dagger 1 gives an amazing 10 secs of poison, along with a nice evade during melee skirmishing. If the action gets too hot I switch over to my SB to put some distance between me and my target while flanking for even more bleeds.
Greatsword is kinda lacking IMO. It doesn’t have good burst, especially when you compare to true melee classes. And you wouldn’t want to use it when you’re condition built, because the 2nd ability only gives 3 stacks of bleed (lots of other better weapon options). So the way to play it would be to go defensive for survivability and play to the strengths of ability 4 and 5.
I want a pet quaggan. One that goes “hooooo” all the time : p
Joking aside, raptors, foxes would be cool. Maybe gorillas too, like a less tanky bear but with buffs/more damage
@agnostAnts
I really like the idea of a siege type wurm pet. It sounds like it’ll be great in wvw.
you mean skip the stupid video of the lame landscape the developers wanted you to watch? i watched about 2-3 then once i seen you can skip..ive been skiping everything i can in this game. More i play the more i regret buying it….but in the end its free to play so theres that.
Ive never even watched a full cutscene on the game past lvl 5 on my first toon created once i learned you can skip..Story in this game is super terribel..worse the a “scifi original” movie. Game play is close to the terribleness of their cutscenes.
I don’t think this game is for you. Maybe something like COD would be to your taste?
I watch all the vistas. Its like a mini reward. The environments are nice to look at too, and give you more ‘feel’ to the zone/game. Those of you skipping them, you’re missing out. It only takes like what..~10-15 secs?
Stop QQing y’all. For just $60 with no sub, this game gives HUNDREDS OF HOURS of entertainment. If thats not value for money IDK what is. I’m 2 weeks into this game and I’ve only done like 30% of the content. Not even counting the other classes/races with their own personal story.
With that said, yes, It’ll be nice if we could duel. Don’t even need an arena or whatever, just the ability to right click on your friend and “invite to duel”.
“Even indie MMOs release with less bugs or at least have them fixed faster.”
LOL. Mind giving us an example of an…“indie” MMO?
