With the new event system...

I think its about time we added a new feature to make completing world events much more meaningful.

As it stands all the events are being completed because players are being directed to all nearby events and especially since the mega servers went live this has meant that events are rarely failing. This is good!

However…I think an escalating system with a large map event at the end would be a terrific new mechanic. Take for instance the Brisban Wildlands; I was wondering around there and all of a sudden a flock of people run past me and go to defend the main hold. We hold off all the centaurs after a long battle and get a bit of karma. It was easy and the reward reflected that.

Now imagine if for every time we successfully defended the keep it increased in difficulty. Adding double mobs, extra hard hitting veterans etc. If we successfully united as a map and completed that defend event 10 times in a row then we would unlock a small new event with a large boss which dropped a chest for everyone.

This would be especially great when used in events like temple events where the boss could actually attack the temple on the 10th successful defend.

Anyone else think this would rock the hell out of Guild wars 2?

[Suggestion] Improve Ground Targeting system

I cant create topic in Suggestion sub-forum, so please if moderator can move it, will be great. If no – hope all will appreciate the idea and it will arrive to creators of game.

  • Idea is to add a check-box in menu, under ground targeting type, which will provide auto limit of skill range.
  • For example, you need to cast fast a mass spell at a maximum range and with this option we will be able to move fast mouse forward and ground circle will move until limit of maximum range and stop there even if you move mouse farther.
  • circle will stay green at a maximum range and wont go farther in red and stopping you to cast saying that is too far.

Similar control option have skills like: Whirlwind Attack and Fiery Whirl
Its so nice to execute quick without any delay and easy to implement in this idea, just to add possibility to set from closer range to max.

Would be great for things like Blink as well. I actually thought that this would be the default behaviour when I started playing and was surprised that there wasn’t even an option for it.

I really think Halloween is the most magical time of the year. I mean, the most magical time of the year in the game. Yeah, yeah, that’s what I meant.

The new rewards look good, the event is always fun, and it’s a great way to reconnect with guildies and friends. Hope to see y’all in the game!

There ya go ANET.. another fire to put out.. another Failtrain event exposed, another area to toxify and serve up with ya coffee.. fancy an exploit muffin with that??.

Sure it will get a nerfbat, but those same players have likely already sniffed the next one out ready to jump to when their loot bags dry up in Kessex.

Wonder how long before the anti-failtrain moves in and the soup begins to curdle once more.. happy times!

Well if the game was right a Fail should mean no reward at all… Not sure why it is set up that a fail is better then success??? I always try to do my best I hate failing at stuff…

Basically, it’s a double-edged design sword. Some events spawn a lot of mobs (especially Champions) if there are a ton of players present to scale it way up.

Normally, completing such an event means you kill whatever mobs spawn and then you move on to the next event. But some events end up with variations on: You can let the huge swarm of mobs kill any relevant NPCs (that would cause the event to succeed) and then kill the mobs after.

These events typically have a short reset timer for when they are “failed.” The double-edged part is because this is a great design choice in theory! If players fail, they quickly get another chance to succeed.

But then on the other stabby end, it gives players the opportunity to get rewards from killing some mobs, purposefully failing, and then repeating the process over and over. The design choice is not taking into account the manipulative organization of large groups of players to reap as many rewards as possible.

Essentially, the design choice is great for game design, but it isn’t designed to handle organized manipulation from the playerbase.

the basic problem is that they designed events wrong. They make most of the reward be based on the monsters you kill during the event, as well, the better the map is doing, the less events/conflict there is.

Now lets say people doing well on the map (succeeding events) caused a fighting pit/arena type area (or areas) to be well stocked with powerful monsters and non stop events, or special monsters with higher, or special drop rates. Perhaps if winning all the temples spawned special profitable events, etc. (there is a very light version of this with elementals spawning, but no events tied to them, and only a few people can profit off this, as well as drop rates being in general poor)
suddenly people would not be interested in having the map fall into disrepair, and failing events again and again would always be a poor choice.

basically the reward design for events encourages failure in many cases, so people fail them.

I’ve seen this a lot leveling alts in Kessex lately. Pretty much the mindset is the loot is better if you let it fail since you get more champion enemy spawns so you get more bags. Typical loot farming mindset.

I do think people act obnoxiously rude to people that may not know better. It is a low level zone after all. Since most of the farming herds moved out the starter zones new players are not subjected to that mindset until that zone really.

Either way if you are there before others and want to complete the event then go ahead. People will give you heat but that is just the aspect of the problem. In reality its just a side effect to a bigger issue that is hard to address properly it feels.

What happened to just being nice and explaining to people? I dunno. Its a strange breed of MMO player.

[Suggestion] More Options

Here’s a bunch of options I believe would improve my Guild Wars 2 experience.

General Options > User Interface

  • Hide My Story — While the Living Story is interesting, I don’t feel like going through it on each of my characters. The constant reminder on the upper right of my screen, not to mention on the mini-map, is distracting and unnecessary. Being able to remove it would help reduce clutter, as well.

General Options > Combat/Movement

  • Automatically Stow Weapons — When out of combat, characters automatically stow their weapons after a few seconds. While it would be enabled by default, I’d love being able to disable this feature so I can have my weapons out at all times.

General Options > Content

  • New Player Experience — A simple option to enable or disable level gating. It simply does not make any sense that a veteran player is forced to go through a feature intended for new players every time they create a new character. It should be optional, or only active on the account’s first character.

Hero > Equipment

  • Hide/Unhide Boots — We can already hide headgear, shoulders and gloves. On multiple characters, I’d love being able to also hide boots.

Hero > Dyes

  • Underwear — This might sound silly, but being able to customize a character’s underwear could be some sort of alternative to the popularly demanded swimsuits. Plus, more character customization is always good!

Black Lion Trading Company > Trading Post

  • Only Show Locked Skins — To make life easier for skin collectors, being able to browse equipment that have potentially unlockable skins would be a nice addition to the Trading Post.

Player Conduct Report

  • New reason options:
    • Inactive in PvP — Players going AFK in base after getting the minimum score requirement for match rewards is a recurring issue, especially in Hot-join and Solo Arena. Being able to report players with this behavior would probably discourage them from doing so.
    • Exploiting or Hacking — I sometimes encounter players in PvP who use lag switching or speed hacks to gain an unfair advantage. This is unacceptable and should be much more easily reportable.
  • Comment — Adding a small, optional comment box could help the support team understand the cause of report and clear up potential confusion.

That’s all I’ve got for now. Thoughts?

I was.. I say WAS, looking forward to moving to WvW during our lull in new content. In the meantime I choose to try for and see if I could get world complete.

A little story about that. You see I set a goal for my character. With as little help as possible I would get the world complete on my own. As in all by myself. I know I know it seems silly , actually trying being proud that I completed Orr all on my own and every nook and cranny of the PVE experience and the surprises it held.

The surprise I was not ready for was the WVW part of it, I had played a bit in the beginning got quickly bored with the same ol Zerg , And I never felt right turning the random people it fell upon like a horde of army ants as.. well .. sporting. I loved big battles and 1 on 1’s But just mowing through people like an unstoppable wave of hate

Not my sort of fun.

I had heard a lot had changed and looked forward to seeing what the new WvW had to offer . But .. That world completion thing , you know the one where you have to clear all the WvW maps to be “worthy” Unfortunately unless you are in a Zerg you can fugging forget it.

In short.. my seething desire to just flip a fuggin table is at its highest right now. Exactly who on your team thought it would be a good idea to put vistas and poi’s INSIDE enemy fortresses, he must go home and kick kittens at night..

There is no way, none , unless you time the flip just right on the right days to get in without getting turned into a smear to get the completes over all the maps. its stupid and it kittenes me off. Having to rely on the army ant zerg to finish something I had done on my own up to that point is ridiculous

I would ask you to change it . but I think I have more luck winning the lottery tonight than it being changed.. But indeed I now hate WvW .. love the fact that the mists maps are not always available either ..

Im out. all that work and now it is going to take me weeks and luck and Zergs to someday get the complete.

Ill be hating every step of it

It’s always going to be a part of MMOs, love it or hate it. Some of us are just wired with preferences for more speedy, hardcore play. Something to do with getting bored otherwise, perhaps.

Like I said though, find people you can relate to. You aren’t gonna change the world on this one.

True, perhaps that is just what you have to do. I guess rushing through everything, even for little to no reward, just seems so pointless to me. I would think you’d want to enjoy the ride during those less rewarding circumstances at least.

snip

Spoken like a person who doesnt make their own groups and expects all others to cater to his whims.

Just like you can take your time and watch cutscenes
so can everyone else do whatever it is they want to do in their groups.

be it speed, naked, all necro, RP walking, ERP

Thank you for making gross assumptions about me. I’m glad I could make you feel good about yourself at my expense.

For one, you’re wrong. I always make my own groups, primarily because most of the runs that I see on the LFG tool are “All Zerkers Lvl 80 Exp Only” and that’s an environment I’d rather not submit myself to, so I actually am making groups to fit my play-style. My one fault in making them (which has already been pointed out by others) is that I neglected to mention that I wanted to view the cutscenes. But I always put “All Welcome” in my descriptions, so one would assume that would imply a more laid-back atmosphere. Nevertheless, I’ll make sure to be overly specific next time, lest I be viewed as “a person who doesn’t make their own groups and expects others to cater to his whims”. You clearly didn’t read my post very thoroughly if you came to that conclusion, since I specifically mentioned altering my preferred play-style in AC out of consideration for my teammates due to a computer issue I had at the time (The one exception being the end, and only because I didn’t realize that they had to stay until I was finished).

But the grand point of my post, which you seem to have missed, is that this hasty mentality doesn’t make sense in every aspect of the game. I’ve already stated that I understand why people would do this in explorable dungeons. I mean, even I skip the cutscenes in those (though I’m not bothered if other people don’t). They’re meant to be a means of attaining loot. Rushing through them makes sense. But Story mode and personal story quests aren’t like that. They are meant to be played FOR THE STORY. When I decide to join a story run on my lvl 80 alts for the hell of it, sure I may skip the cutscenes, but I don’t look at it as if it’s something to be raced through. That’s because it doesn’t make sense. What are you rushing for? The silver coins at the end? (Or in the case of another player’s PS, nothing?) Again, this isn’t to say vets can’t play a story run. I do it all the time. But why approach it with a “speed-run” mentality when there’s nothing truly worth getting at the end of it?

There’s the rub. Where once the desire to race through content was only present in specific, more hardcore aspects of the game, it is now not only prevalent in the other game modes, but apparently the dominant way do do things, even if it doesn’t make sense given the setting. My question is why? Why does this desire to speed clear bleed over into things that are clearly more leisurely in nature? Why is it that generally speaking, fun = fast in the GW2 community as a whole?

I’m always a little annoyed when people watch the cut scenes in the dungeons, I never say anything though.

You say that the issue goes beyond this specific incident. What else is there?

Well I appreciate that you at least allow people to watch if they want. And like I said, it’s seeping into every aspect of the GW2 culture. It started in explorable dungeons and in that context, its fine. You rush because there is a specific goal to be attained; one that may require hours of running the same dungeon over and over again. But story mode doesn’t have that incentive. In fact it doesn’t really have much incentive period. Just that you get to run explorable mode. And if you are going into a story dungeon with a " I just want to get this done" mentality, why even bother running it? It’s clearly not your first walk around the block and if you’re that desperate to get into the explorable paths, why not just switch to an alt and skip the dungeon altogether? And now you can’t even run a personal story quest with certain people without complaints. And criticizing an open world build for not being efficient enough? That’s just silly.

I guess my main gripe is that it seems like everything has become “gotta finish as fast as I can”. It’s like a factory assembly line. You aren’t allowed to take your time when assembling a product. And since this is supposed to be fun, I don’t get how such a mentality took root in the less intense aspects of the game.

The reward for the dungeon (the pop-up) will not happen until the final cutscene is over for everybody. That’s what they were waiting for and getting annoyed with.

That so? I had always thought that that all the rewards were given post final boss. You learn something new everyday. Anyway, even if I concede that fact, that doesn’t change that we’re playing story mode. The rewards aren’t THAT amazing that it HAS to be rushed. The only thing worth getting from them is the ability to play explorable, which you can skip entirely by playing on an alt if you’re in that much of a rush to get tokens. And what if you’re with playing someone who is new? Shouldn’t they be allowed to see the story?

The issue I have goes beyond just this incident though. I’ll admit that I was a bit irritated at being rushed, but why is it that these kinds of things are being rushed in the first place? Again, isn’t enjoying your playtime important at all? Are roleplaying and soaking in the “feel” of the story worth nothing at all?

Well…there were centaur slaves in the past. GW1’s Nightfall even allowed us to visit a Kournan camp where there were centaur slaves/prisoners and we freed them in one of the missions.

Palawa Joko was noted to have centaurs as slaves and you could see the effects as some of the Ancient resembled undead centaurs. There isn’t a great deal of lore about it, but there is enough lore to justify a belief that perhaps these centaur were also slaves at one point.

I could get on board with this because quite frankly, I have yet to really touch WvW (unless you count EotM karma train) and I feel like I’m wasting a map slot to do my mapping, when I have no interest at the time in doing actual WvW content. It’s not like the mapping in there is even WvW content – it’s just PvE mapping in an instance, with a few blockades based on who controls what.

So really, it’s not that I don’t want to WvW (cause I can easily avoid that anyway). It’s that I don’t want to get in the way of serious WvW, just so that I can do my PvE crap. Every time I step in there to map complete, I feel like a spectator walking onto an NBA basketball court to pick daisies.

I did WvW maps 99.9% solo. It was not 100% because I saw map chat pop up that they were headed to take a place I needed. I never once asked for help. It’s possible to do solo. It just takes a lot more patience to do so.

Unless you took down all the gates, defeated all the champions and capped the locations all on your own, I would argue that you didn’t do it solo. Your path had to be cleared by other players. I’m fine with that from a pvp perspective but, again, map completion is a personal reward. You shouldn’t need others to gain a personal reward.

Well, tbh, a lot of map completionists dont understand this one thing, wvw is not a solo game. Join a group/commander and take objectives, and you will get most of the things you need in a couple of days, maybe in a server that doesnt do well you have to wait for colours to rotate… But wvw map completion isn’t supposed to be like regular map completion, so removing other borderlands or eb makes no sense, where is the challenge if you just visit places you own? Objective of wvw is to take objectives.

The problem I have with your reasoning is that map completion is a personal achievement. What sense does it make to need a group in order to obtain a personal achievement? That’s like gathering 30 people to help you pick out a new car.
