Living Story Has Killed the Game for me

in Living World

I’ve been playing GW2 since launch. There was a lot of great things about this game. The graphics, the stories, the non competition for resource nodes, helping get players up that were hurt, respectable fair pvp, etc. There was a lot. Unfortunately once I got to 80, I could never find anything to do. So I leveled another 80, and another. Then the living story stuff started, and it was very cool, new and fun for an MMO – at first.

Fast forward a few updates, and the whole thing has seemed to slip into rapid fire and I can’t keep up – the whole story doesn’t even make sense to me anymore and I’m totally lost. I log in and Lion’s Arch is destroyed, and I’m in the ruins with no direction or explanation, and people are yelling “red, blue” etc. in map chat and I have no idea what is happening.

Furthermore every single expansion has had a pretty cinematic, and then it thrusts you into a zoned area where if you’re not in a zerg you are instantly dead, there is no explanation and everyone has already done everything and has the boss on repeat. There is virtually nothing you can do alone, and everything is one giant zerg after another.

To finish it all off, the kill on Scarlet was totally rushed and didn’t explain anything! Why did she gather the molten alliance, etc.? No one knows. In fac,t no one knows why she did anything at all.

I have to respect Anet for trying to keep us pulled into this game and not getting bored, but for me they killed it for the above reasons – total backfire. I am done with Guild wars 2 for good. At base, if your game has no point or reason to play, you can’t cover that up with poorly designed rapid fire expansions, because so far, they still haven’t given me a reason to play beyond running around in a zerg and collcting the latest “drop” to make yet another set of armor.

I really like this game. I’ve made no secret about it, but the idea of limited time content, combined with bugs makes the game as frustrating as it is fun.

I’m not sure what the solution is, but three days into a two week patch is too late in my opinion for the event to be what its supposed to be.

Perhaps the two week cycle is just too rushed and it should be made longer. I, for one, would prefer avoiding a couple of days of frustration in order to get a working event.

I really really want player housing- I don’t care about guild halls but some people do and they should have that too.
Did I say I want player housing?
PLease!

For people who do not understand it, you don’t have to get one if you don’t want- many people have been asking for this since launch

Why the hell would Braham tell Scarlet “it doesn’t matter now” when she was about to tell us why she did what she did?! I really wanted to know. I want questions answered! I mean come on, who interrupts the classic villain when they are about to tell us all about their plot? This makes me want to run my sword through Braham where he stands!

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

I no longer “play” this game anymore. I come to the forums from time to time and occasionally log on in hopes there new updates that drastically overhaul the game entirely. My first game was gw1, I loved that game so much and when I heard there was a 2nd one coming, it was like Jesus was coming back to save us all (ok, not to that extent but, you get what I meant). After a year of playing, I can now see this was a totally different game. Why the hell did they call it Guild Wars 2? Totally false advertising. I am very disappointed like a lot of other people who came from gw1, it was a gem..

Guild Wars 2 is more of a generic MMO than Guild Wars 1 ever was.
It’s not a sequel, It’s a completely new game.
Almost all core aspects that made original game unique were removed.

Largos and Tengu are the only races I see that have a big chance to become playable in the future, specially Tengu.
Make a Largos sounds really awesome, and I love the voice acting of them.

Charter Vanguard [CV] – HoD
Bardy Belzebuson – Ranger Sir Belzebu – Herald
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)

I love the idea of the Great Houses and would love to see more of their culture.

Only the Tethyos Houses are mentioned and their motto seems a bit limiting for playable characters.

They would be my number one choice as a new playable race- also under water region whoo-hoo.
Underwater combat would have to be overhauled though because not everyone plays an Engi :p

this game, the game I have been playing, it doesn’t deserve the title of ‘Guild Wars’.

Quoted because it sums up my feelings perfectly. Doesn’t even feel like Guild Wars anymore. Not trying to be a party pooper, it’s just depressing.

Scarlet is a terrible plot device. I don’t hate Scarlet. I hate the poor writing and implementation. I hate the lack of in-game storytelling. I just really feel that the LS writers and developers completely missed the mark.

I look back on the past year and I find myself wishing that it were all a bad dream and that GW2 hadn’t been released yet. Because, this game, the game I have been playing, it doesn’t deserve the title of ‘Guild Wars’.

Low success event + no loot from mobs = Time/Gold sink ?

Having events that basically require the same people turning up to all servers & running them is in no way any form of “balance”. This game is further & further from the grasp of the common player. The toil of making ascendeds is bad enough, then we find out that there will be stat changes which will potentially make a particular set unviable for the toon you busted your butt to create.

Now we have an event with a high failure rate where there is a multitude of mobs but no loot. Since when did obtaining loot for efforts become a no no?

Farming mobs instead of trying to do an event is one thing, getting no loot from an event that is expected to fail is totally unfair.

Its a game , its meant to be fun, This is more like work than fun.

Good, this game hands out too many free achievements. We need more titles/achievements that require difficult feats, with reward points to match.

This is a well designed achievement. It encourages you to actually try to do well at the event, in stead of chasing some meta gizmo that can actively hurt it. (I’m looking at you tequatl chest/failure achievements)

Except this achievement has almost no bearing on your individual skill what so ever. If the other people on the platforms fail, you do not get credit for the achievement, even if your platform kicks butt, takes names, and you dodge everything ever.

If this was a personal thing of “You need to kill the champion and generator without taking damage on your platform to get credit”, I’d be inclined to agree with you.

Having to wait on four other groups that you can’t help or interact with to complete their platforms in order for you to get credit on yours is not an intelligent decision, at all, especially for content that’s temporary.

It’s basically forcing people to either have the luck of the saints in order to pull these off, or more accurately, give players a reason to come back every day to do a daily achievement for the LS to get credit for the meta, which in turn makes Anet look good in front of NCsoft and their investors, as they can turn around and say “look at how often people are logging into the game!”

In order to complete these achievements you have to succeed the Warden event (the entire event up on the platforms) without being hit by the Marionette. If you are hit, you don’t get it. If you fail the event, you don’t get it. Stay sharp and break that chain and you’ll have it.

So..in order to get what should be simple achievements, we have to not only complete the event without taking any damage from the Marionette while also dealing with the Champion Boss on our platform, but also rely on the other four groups to not fail their events, otherwise we get no credit what so ever.

…Oh sweet mother of poorly thought out achievements. Welp, guess I’ll be doing the Daily for the LS each day in order to get enough to credit to finish the meta.

Well, I defended these new events at first..

.. but I’ve found I’ve already gotten bored and moved back to doing other things. And that never usually happens for me with LW content.

I like the idea of a challenging boss that requires a lot of coordination from a group.. it is an MMO after all. But these events just aren’t fun to participate in after trying them a few times:
- Too much waiting around.
- Too much annoyance trying to get a party into an OF that actually has a decent number of players in it.
- Too much failure.
- Too little reward when you fail.

I’m glad they don’t give out oodles of drops for each kill, as that would just encourage farming rather than trying to beat the event. But spending an hour and getting almost nothing for the effort stinks. And while I felt we should wait a bit before passing judgment on the difficulty, I think it’s pretty obvious at this point that these are too difficult for most people to be able to participate in a team that actually beats them.

I hope this doesn’t become yet another example of what’s all too common in MMOs: great content that clearly took a lot of time and effort to make, that gets ignored by most players because it needs to be tweaked but isn’t.

Suffering Through The Story

I recently returned back to GW2 and I’m enjoying myself for the most part, until I do something in the Personal Story that is. My character is so bland it makes me want to strangle them. Show some LIFE! Get angry, sad, anything! Who was directing these voice actors?

“Ok, I want you to deliver these next lines with absolutely no emotion whatsoever. YES! That’s perfect!” -Voice Director

The world is beautiful and the exploration and gameplay have always been fun to me, but DANG that story stuff stinks. The human actors are especially cringeworthy. The only reason I find myself playing the story is for the XP only. And you have to play through your personal story to do anything (story-wise) later in the game. Correct? It’s been a while.

Please. It’s an MMO. Whats this no loot mentality thats been going on a bit too long? These events feel very empty aside from just having an incredible quantity of dps sinks that don’t even reward you. I don’t understand this anymore. The gameplay isn’t good enough to completely drain the loot from the events like this.

Not talking content here but what’s up with all the giggling and poor presentation skills?

Tbh this was the first one I watched and it was a big turn-off and really makes me questions anet’s professionalism as a company. Is it always like that?

My recommendation, please get some more senior / serious ppl out.

as i didn t find a thread talking specifically about it except for old ones and struggles about manifesto, and i think it s “legal” to express my opinion pacifically…

i think that vertical progression hurts my gaming experience.
i feel forced doing dailies, world events, etc…because it s necessary to craft ascended, to avoid any “handicap” when playing with other better geared ppl.
don t care if it s relevant or not that stats difference in wvw o pve. just hate that.

i loved to grind for a title. for skins. i felt really motivated and found it a free choice.
vertical progression binds me to a sense of inferiority, grind like a necessary work to be done for a mandatory aim.
my two cents.

[Interview] Living Story Plans Changing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Vol.7601

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-14-you-thought-that-was-it-for-guild-wars-2

Extremely good article all around that touches a lot of topics. Big one here:

“Concern: ArenaNet won’t stop banging on about the Living World update plan and so will stick with it even if it’s not working.

Not true. ArenaNet is changing it this year.

The original idea was to have four story teams making a month’s worth of content each, to be released in fortnightly bumps, and whatever mechanical features were ready at that time could be rolled in and included. ‘An online world updated more frequently than any other’ was the dream, but the reality was confusion.

“It’s very distracting to players,” observed Johanson. “It’s almost a muddled message, where we put these releases out and we want them to be excited about the story, to follow the story, and we also want them to be excited about the features that are coming with it. And either one or the other tends to be the thing that people cling onto.” And the other thing, people ignore.

“What we’re going to do this year is we’re actually separating the two of those out.”

All the big mechanical features ArenaNet is working on will be held back for a bumper update presumably in the spring/summer.

“When [Living World Season One] ends [on 4th March], we’re going to take a break for a little bit and then we’re going to do one really big feature patch that is more akin to what people see from some of our [MMO] competitors,” said Johanson, "where they bundle a lot of features together into a really big patch every now and then.

“We’re going to provide that experience and have this huge feature build that has a whole lot of gameplay-changing elements, a lot of quality of life improvements, a lot of features bundled together into one big patch. And that’ll come some time not too far after Season One completes.”

tldr: expansion in summer
