Still, there is a lot to talk about now…
…rangers react to other prof GM traits.

Well the defensive issues of the class would be resolved somewhat if there were actual CC immunities or diminished returns. Take stun break for example. The class has its fair share of options to break stuns, and while less than others, it’s still enough to succeed in dueling and the limited combat PvP has to offer. Breaking a stun just to have it followed by another stun in WvW gets you no where. The same can be said about the Ranger’s plentiful evades which gets them no where in WvW, their immobilizes that are removed instantly, etc. These mechanics simply don’t work at the WvW level largely due to the way they’ve designed the game and not necessarily because it’s WvW.
But even with that said, you still see these issues in PvP. Say the Ranger pushes for middle for example, he doesn’t excell at this role because they weren’t given the tools to do it. Especially not as a power build. the value of all those evades are largely lost because they don’t hold up when it’s more than 1v1 or 2v1. Immobilizes don’t hold up etc.
This leads into my overall complaint with the CDI thread though. Where you would expect ANet to bring the Ranger up to a level to fit into the game they’ve made, they appear to be treating this class as ‘business as usual’ and will take the 2 year plan of bringing the game down to the Ranger’s level.
The Ranger is a duelist (but only as a condi/bunker, not power) and all of their skills excell at only this one role. But where a Thief can still provide a lot of AE weakness and poison, or high burst to take out key targets etc, the Ranger doesn’t have a back-up plan. They’re forever a duelist. Stuck with tools that work in no other way. Left with no useful offensive tools. Provide utility that is simply too weak to take notice of.
I never played GW1, but from the descriptions you guys have, it honestly doesn’t sound that much different than a Ranger class in any other MMO.
Lower overall damage per shot, but higher rate of fire to maintain an elevated level of DPS with support skills to spike damage to apply pressure. All the while the majority of the class’s defense and offensive utility came from their ability to kite their opponents with limited on demand skills for emergencies and to escape from CC.
Sound about right? And then compare that model to GW2…
I’m not sure they’ve covered any of those area sufficiently enough for the class to handle anything remotely close to ogranized group play. Certainly enough for dueling or small scale roaming. But groups of 5-10 all the way up to zergs?
i personally think the Basic stones should give 1 charge, and the Crystals should give 5 charges. all armor changes below 80 should cost 1 charge, and level 80 armor changes cost 5 charges. this way, basic stones still allow SOME use for level 80 armor sets, but still dont end up costing us a ton.
Naked /untraited ranger LB AA =
212 @ 0-500
265 @ 500-1000
317 @ 1000-1200
this is per second (because of after cast)
(see : http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vMAQFADAA-w for numbers used)
Naked / untraited GS mesmer (closest for comparison)
(couldn’t find after cast value, took it at 0.5 sec, so 2 sec per AA)
201 (3x) @ 0-300
249 (3x) @ 300-600
300 (3x) @ 600-900
348 (3x) @ 900-1200
(see: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vgAQFABAA for numbers used)
So, per two seconds,
Range ……………………..Ranger…………..Mesmer
0-300 ………………………..414……………………..603
300-500……………………414……………………..747
500-600…………………..530………………………747
600-900…………………..530………………………900
900-1000…………………530…………………..1044
1000-1200……………..634…………………….1044
Yep, according to these numbers, Mesmer’s GS is really overpowered….
I agree, we should totally nerf it!
1) “READ THE WIND” LONGBOW AUTO-ATTACK WILL NOW HIT TARGETS (already announced)
2) “MASTERY OF DODGE” DODGE WILL NOW WORK WHILE USING SWORD
3) “BASIC TRAINING” AXE WILL NOW DO APPRECIABLE DPS
4) “CHANCE IN HELL” PETS WILL NOW SURVIVE ZERG AOE 10% OF THE TIME
5) “OBEDIENCE SCHOOL” PET ATTACKS WILL NOW HIT TARGETS
The sad thing is that Anet is probably going to do something like this.
Why can’t ANet be creative with Ranger, since we’re dealing mediocre damage with LB and SB which is why some people chose Ranger is because we’re supposed to be unparalleled archers, can’t we get traits that make us deal #% of foes maximum health per hit with our bows? could be put into skirmishing trait or better yet, why can’t our auto attack on bows 3rd skill chain deal 2% pure damage plus actual damage. That’s wearing down your opponent Ranger should have access to % damage!
Warriors were complained about early on because no one ran toughness and Warriors were mobile as all hell. They came out of no where like a freight train, knocked you down, and then popped frenzy (or whatever that attack speed skill was) + 100b and pretty much 1 shot anyone with that combo. they would then run away after taking out their target with near immunity from any harm.
What’s funny is they still do this to this very day, but it’s no where near as problematic as the hammer trains, insane condi meta, and this crazy hambow point denial everyone runs in PvP.
The Warrior is the perfect example of ANet listening to the wrong crowd though when it comes to overall balance. They were listening to the supposed Warrior experts in PvP talking about how inferior the class was and they rolled out change after change after change in short order. All the while they completely ignored the state of the class in every other aspect of the game (They’ve never been weak in WvW) and we’re at the point we are now.

Kal Spiro, you are missing the entire point of my post. Yes all who are crit based are going to feel it, tell me though, whats a viable alternative to playing a RANGED ranger in WvW in zerg fights? One that has enough damage capabilities to keep up with other characters? I am choosing the play the class as it is CALLED ITS CALLED A kitten RANGER. My anger is based off of the fact that when we finally were able to begin to keep up with other classes in PvP/WvW situations, we are now being nerfed again. Yes its across the entire board, but other classes have better options to deal with this kind of damage nerf, we as rangers do not, for those who actually want to play the ranger as a RANGED character. And not be a condi bunker build.
First of all, I am not a bear bow, and if you play that way especially in a zerg your worthless. This is a discussion on PvP/WvW viability and them screwing with our builds to stay ranged. I am a commander in IoJ, as well as in a reputable WvW guild, and I provide decent dmg output and CC for my team. But with the changes coming to the ranger and my dmg output being lowered by 10% when another class who doesn’t rely on crit dmg isn’t going to have there damage lowered makes us a weaker class. Its only across the board to those who rely on crit dmg to keep up. Precision and crit dmg is our bread and butter to staying viable on the dmg scale for classes. An extra sigil that melee classes have had since release is not going to change that for us. Show me a viable damage based build built around only power and no precision or crit damage for the ranger, with enough survivability to last in a zerg bust. You can’t. Now show me viable power based builds for the warrior, ele, guardian, ect. I understand perfectly what is going on, and across the board or no, its the rangers that are going to feel this 10% hit the most.
In my opinion, the real issue is that there’s so little variation for each armor class (the old trenchcoat discussion). I’d much rather see the time invested in making a variety of new armors. I’m not against eles wearing heavier-looking armor, the HotW light dungeon armor goes in that direction and I love it, or warriors wearing more slimmed down armor. I’d just rather have more armor. A lot more.
I really want some feedback, and opinions here. I want to know if people feel the same way I do about how unappealing the Gem Store is.
If I’m going to spend real world cash that I had to work my butt off for, then I’d like something worth buying. I put aside lots of money for gaming. I’ve literally spent thousands on “Free” to play games. Champion skins for LOL, and Premium tanks in WOT, etc… Now here I am in GW2, and I’m looking to support ANET. I honestly feel that this is the best MMO going right now. I want to support them, and keep this thing going. The gem store sadly has little to nothing to offer.
$10 armor, and weapon skins that are one time use? Who needs em? Almost everything in the store is one time use or expires. I want permanent account upgrades, and items. Yeah, I bought bank tabs, and character slots, but now what? I got excited when I saw the Watchwork mining pick. I couldn’t wait to equip my characters with that. Then I saw that you couldn’t just “withdraw” it for each character. You had to either switch it over to each character when you log or buy like $100 worth of them for all your characters. It’s easier just to use the 4 silver ones. Why spend money on garbage like this?
Please Arena Net, consider re working the Gem Store, so it’s worth spending some money. I am willing to throw a ton of cash at this game, once there’s something to buy. The basic ore node is a cool idea. I’d like to see more stuff like that. Home instance upgrades, or maybe even an entire new home instance that you can buy, and upgrade. I’d gladly buy a Pick, Axe, and Sickle that was designed to be withdrawn from a special items tab on each character. I’d purchase tons of armor, and weapon skins if they could be withdrawn the same way. Remote bank, and trading post access on a permanent basis would definitely get me spending money.
I’m sitting here, with cash in hand just waiting for a reason to spend it. Anyone feel the same way?
This is a suggestion. Since I am unable to create a new topic in the Suggestion sub-forum, I don’t really know where else to put this so I will add it here and hope for the best. I apologize if this is in the wrong section but since I don’t see any actual suggestion forum section…
Why am I suggesting this?
I would like to see more variety in armor sets (armors, boots, head pieces, gloves, pants, shoulders) by allowing players to be able to transmute item skins across classes. The item would not transmute the item’s stats, but just the look. Currently, I am bored with the armors, which I have noticed that most of them look the same, regardless of level, even though they have different names.
It would be nice to see more variety in styles and I think a lot of people might actually enjoy being able to do this, especially with the fact that we can mix and match items. For example, wearing the medium Guild Armor set’s shoulders, pants and boots with a Swindler coat, mask and gloves.
In addition, this would also give people more freedom of choice when creating a new character and selecting a new profession. Some people may not necessarily like a particular profession’s look, that being the armor set(s), and may not want to play that profession based on how it looks. It may seem silly to some and even though most may not admit it, or want to, it does actually happen, a lot. If how things looked weren’t important to players, we wouldn’t spend money on fashion items, new hairstyles, etc, nor would it matter if every armor set looked exactly the same.
But it does matter, and more variety and freedom in styles is a positive addition to any game. Player customization is a big deal in MMO’s today; people will spend a lot of money customizing their character’s look.
Skin Transmutation.
These could be bought in the Black Lion Trade, created in a forge by combining X number of Transmutation items and X number of other materials, such as tier 6 materials, or given as quest/mission/event rewards, like the normal Transmutation items and be accessible by all characters on a single account.
What is Skin Transmutation?
This item would allow the transfer of the skin only from one item to another of the same kind (weapon with weapon, boots with boots, gloves with gloves, etc) across professions. For example, if I wanted to transfer the skin of a Mesmer mask to a Hunter mask so that my Hunter could wear a Mesmer mask, whilst still retaining the stats of the main Hunter mask item. This could also be applied to weapons so long as they follow the same rules as armors: Guns with guns, bows with bows, swords with swords.
The Main item would also retain it’s type, that being light/medium/heavy, regardless of the type of the Secondary item. This would insure that the Skin Transmutation can truly be done across all professions.
How would it work?
~ Have Skin Transmutation item in your inventory.
~ Click on the Skin Transmutation item in your inventory and a box will appear on your screen. The box will have two sides; Main Item (the item you wish to transfer the skin into) and the Secondary item (the item you wish to transfer the skin from).
~ You would add the main item into the Main box and the secondary item into the Secondary, which will show you the skin icon at top and the two stat boxes below for each item. There is an arrow between the two skin icons which points away from the Secondary toward the Main so as to make it clear that you’re transfering the skin from the Secondary to the Main.
~ Upon clicking on OK, a second box will pop up asking you if you are certain and explaining in short detail that clicking on Accept, any stats of the Secondary item will be lost and not retrievable in any manner. If you understood that the secondary item’s stats will be completely lost and you only wish to trasnfer the look of the item, click Accept.
~ You now have successfully transmuted an item’s Skin and are now able to dye it in any color(s).
I appreciate any feedback on this subject.

Since they are bringing some of the GW1 ranger skills (in name only) to GW2…what are some of the ones the community would like to see?
For me:
Frozen Soil – Creatures in range cannot activate resurrection skills. Does not affect spirits.
Favorable Winds – Arrows move twice as fast and hit for +6 damage for creatures in range. Does not affect spirits.
Preparations such as:
Apply Poison – Your physical attacks inflict Poisoned condition (3…13…15 seconds).
I personally think if they would incorporate some of these into the game (fully, not like what Read the Wind will be) Rangers could be a pretty potent force.
40 new traits. 8 professions. 5 new traits for each classes.
1.) Read the Wind
Ranger: Your arrows are swift and deadly, but in some scenarios they are not as fast as they need to be and your enemies can dodge them easily. With Marksmanship’s new Read the Wind, your longbow arrows will fire at twice their base velocity, allowing for supreme accuracy at long range.
2.) Empowered Training
Beastmaster: Your pets will now be able to hit any moving foes within its 300 radius without missing.
3.) Tree-jutsu
Nature Magic: You will be transformed into a Seed Pod for 260 seconds to heal nearby allies and cure conditions on them.
4.) Arrowcart-jutsu
Skirmishing: You will be transformed into an Arrowcart for 260 seconds to provide real impact in WVW. Ally friendly.
5.) Ranger’s Gift
Nature Magic: You and your pet sacrifice your lives to resurrect down allies to 100% health and 100% stamina. Max 5.
Number 5 is my fav.
I was there when the dev. officially responded to this. He said the names were stored server side and it would take almost an entire server on its own to store every single characters’ pets’ names. They didn’t comment any further on it after that.
Everyone knows that line was utter BS
Say Worse case scenario:
20 exotic UTF-8 characters per name
40 pets per ranger
5 rangers per account
10 million players
That’s 80GB
More realistically
10 common UTF-8 characters per name
5 pets per ranger
1 ranger per account
1 million players
That’s 50 MB
That won’t even make a dent on a cheap usb flash drive, let alone a server.
3/5
We got 3 nice traits (WS, NM, BM) and 2 bad traits:
- Read the Wind – This trait is simply to fix longbow’s inability to hit targets at longer ranges. It’s not a worthless trait (I want my arrows to hit after all) but surely not GM tier trait in itself.
- Strider’s Defense – No matter how effective this trait might be, 15% proc chance is just pure RNG. Because of that I’ll never be choosing this trait, ever.
Suggestion for RtW:
They could merge Eagle Eye with Read the Wind and have it include short bow as well. New GM trait:
- Read the Wind – Increases short bow, longbow and harpoon gun range and projectile velocity. (300 units / 100%)
This is because the accuracy problems really start to bother after you’ve taken Eagle Eye. Well ok, it’s bothersome even at smaller ranges I admit but at 1500 range it becomes really obvious. In any case, I think these two traits would go nicely together. Anet has also mentioned that if short bow would ever get it’s 1200 unit range back it would be with a GM trait.
(edited by Taushullu.6180)
Ok, here is the no QQ version.
Marksmanship: As they mentioned on the stream this is a wvw/pvp trait. Apart from 1v1 where your opponent will mind your LRS at all, I don’t see the improvement here. And harpoon gun? Its a condi weapon, who would take a 30 point MM trait to buff their harpoon gun projectile speed?
Skirmishing: With the vision of rangers being survivalists I just don’t see this being used ever. Its in a precision/crit damage trait line, so for power builds obviously (or trappers). It is RNG with a low chance, and requires you to be attacking with a melee weapon (sword/GS basically). In sword you have evades on 2,3 in GS you have evade on auto attack, and a block to deal with projectiles. I don’t think anyone with more than 2 brain cells will consider taking this trait.
Wilderness survival: I saw some comments on a new poison ranger being the new meta in Twitch chat, probably trolls though. No bunker ranger will take this skill over empathic bond. And comparing it to the Guardian more powerful burning skill (which I might as well take having rampager armor everything else berserker I have 1200 condition damage) it is just sub par. On a 2000 condition damage ranger this trait gives 140 damage per second. On 1200 condition damage you get 100, while guardians get more than 200. Thes have extreme burning uptime and great synergy with burning application. Again, I don’t think anyone will take this.
Nature magic: This sounds good on paper, but not sure if as a bunker ranger you would want to load up on survival skills. Again, who will take this and why?
BM: This is the only one I see ever being used, may it be BM rangers, or someone trying to heal others on their ranger (is there anyone?)
Elona Bonechill – Necro / Fionna Gymirdottier – Guard /// RoF
Don’t like any of them personally. Also disappointed they further reinforce the already powerful bunker and regen builds instead of ever branching us out into a working power build.
Skirmishing: Anyone use this tree but trappers? And to lose potency? Doubt it.
WS: Empathic Bond is still mandatory and poison doing bleed x 3 instead of x2 isn’t anything to write home about.
NS: I like it as muddy terrain is at least more valuable than guard.
BM: Depends on the heal, but could work if you play BM bunker still.
Only thing I got excited about in the entire presentation was lightning reflexes.
Somehow other MMOs I’ve played did not have that issue from day 1 till present day.
If they can’t deal with this problem, how can we even expect anything from them?
Hire back GW1 devs.

From what we can see, they clearly want us to stick to condibunkers and don’t even dare to try anything else.

Most people don’t even think Rangers are viable in WvW or GvG as is. In fact its a rarity to see a decently played Ranger, yet I can command on my Ranger, as well as contribute quite a bit to a GvG team and a WvW zerg, I do so often, and had a lot of minds in my guild changed. But this new patch.
This patch is an insult and a slap in the face to most viable ranger builds. We are already a kitten class, and it takes a lot of work to become viable, but go ahead a-net screw us over yet again. 10% loss for zerker builds? Screw you. Do you know how long it took me to learn survivability playing that way? Exact positioning in a zerg in order to be the most effective and still have a dmg output that keeps up with everyone else while not dying 80% of the time?
This also means for my zerg busting build I am going to have to rework… Superior runes of divinity are now going to be kitten.
Thanks for making my hard work and class absolutely useless. Are you ever going to get around to making the Ranger class viable without screwing us over?
Precision is our bread and butter if you want to play ranged. Crit damage is next to that, and what do you go and do? REWORK THE kittenING THING. 10% decrease is no small thing, especially to a class that has to work hard at keeping up with the rest of them. Now, an ele or necro can do my job and be better at it, as it stood I was just keeping par with them.
Unfortunately, no.
Because of the new Survival of the Fittest trait, it can cure 2 conditions in addition to immobilize (and the usual evade and stunbreaker). It would be OP if it removed 5 conditions on use.
My ele clears more condi with just a single heal, and I don’t have to trait anything. When I trait for water and EA, I can get rid of 3 more on top of that….
And the Ele has lower overall health, and lower overall armor. More Condi removal is kind of a requirement for that class. (Also, Ether Renewal is somewhat vulnerable to interrupts, even though it can remove alot of conditions. Most Ranger Survival Skills (as well as signet of renewal) are instant and wont be weak to that.) While people want a profession to have more of this and that, I would say the balance is not that bad right now.
You speak as if there’s reason behind that balance. Pray tell, how do you explain the warrior then which has better HP/Armor/Condi removal than the ranger? You’re projecting things that are not really there.
I don’t know what game you’ve been playing if you think the classes are balanced.
No one cares about spvp so please don’t bring that up.
This has always been and will be my litmus test: can you solo roam as a power ranger on wvw and do is successfully? The answer is a resounding no, ever since the inception of this game.
I think what you, and many others would like to see is ..
1. Pick a class. It really doesn’t mater what class because it’s just a name…because there is only:
-1 trait tree in the game
-You can use every weapon in the game
- You can use any armor you want. Light, medium or heavy.
That way everyone would be the same (except for the class name). Everyone would be welcome in groups in all phases of the game.
Sounds fantastic !
I mean bloody hell, Simply look at the chat during the Event to see what we’re talking about..Every class was getting “Wow that’s op” spammed down it..Not a single person was like said anything remotely like that during the Ranger ones..Everyone was pretty much like “meh”
because everyone think they are crap to begin with, realized that whatever buffs we got only got us “to the level i imagine my current warrior being at” and then looked at others buffs and went “lulz, but we are still ahead so np np”
oh and bye bye atherakia, skitz and the other haters. Was nice to see you try out the ranger. I’ll still play mine as it will forever be viable for the way i play (havoc/blobbing)
I’m glad that it still works for you, but what about others? Not even being sarcastic: do you believe that the changes we got were fair compared to the other professions?
I’m also expecting a nerf to regen ranger so that we’re further shoehorned into a limited choice of builds. Poison ranger looks interesting, but other professions have/received pretty good active condi cleanse so I’m not confident in the viability of that.
no, i was expecting some more, especially from the Skirmishing line. I was hoping we could finally get some nice stuff going for us in terms of crit damage and direct damage. However, this new trait is 99% PvE and 1% PU mesmer friendly to stop the iDuelist from killing you instantly, just gonna need one more shot.
However, immob cleanse on LR, and 5 options for Active condi cleanse, sure we need a 30p (6p new system) trait to get that effect. But Active removal is what we need so badly. Also nice to see us get it on Survival skills. Not to mention the added fury is nice and considering the fury is in NM, thanks to Fortifying Bond, it will automatically be applied to pets too.
I can see the spirit-ranger becoming slightly viable in WvW with this change to NM.
Remains to see how badly we get screwd over by the bugfixes. The passive heal on Spirit of Nature is known, and i agree that considering we can run shouts + spirit can give a 5 man crew over 810 hp/second healing, active condi cleanse and rezz. That is over the top by far. Getting that combo tuned down to a more sensible 650 hp/second is not bad. 650hp/second for a 5 man team is still very very strong.
Currently @ some T1 server in EU
Ranger: Read the Wind
Ranger: Your arrows are swift and deadly …
When I first read this, I immediately lol’ed and stopped reading because I knew Anet was trolling us again …
I think I’ve got an explanation on this. They looked at the power of the other marksmanship grandmasters and made something similarly powerful. Unfortunately, our grandmasters in marksmanship are either weak and overspecialized (remorseless), or something we should have by default (signet of the beastmaster). Therefore, they made something else that we should already have by default.
I especially liked the first sentence. “Your arrows are swift and deadly, but in some scenarios they are not as fast as they need to be and your enemies can dodge them easily.” Since when is something swift and deadly easily dodged? Also, as unparalleled archers, shouldn’t we already have supreme accuracy at long range?
Face it.
We got the ugly stick.
We’re so tired of being laughed at not only by our peers in the game but also, seemingly, by devs who don’t play Ranger much and don’t know the issues – and if they do play why are they accepting OP players who can down and kill them in two hits or less?
This isn’t forwarding Rangers, this is putting another nail in our collective coffins.
We needed a bit of what the Mesmer and Necromancer just got but NO, we got the arrows that we should have by default, as many have already noted.
These are sad days for Rangers in any game, not just this one.
Rangers, if they were as good in WvW as they are in PvE, would be a viable force.
As they are and will be, they get walked on, laughed at and spit upon.
Once again Anet show what utter contempt they hold rangers in- either that or they listen way too much to a few spvp players who would hate to see rangers be useful elsewhere.
This new GM trait should be part of piercing arrows, or just a general improvement to ranger’s LB abilities. Having it as a stand alone means it’s not going to be used.
My god, we need trait COMPRESSIONS. I’m not ok with four longbow traits.
