Inactivity timer bugging in Heart of Thorns

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

I was fighting the Wyvern Patriarch when i saw in my chat that I was inactive and no longer going to receive participation in the event. I don’t know how this happened when I was gliding to avoid being damaged and to grab an egg. This happened in an earlier event where I was doing a quick clearing of inventory so i can grab loot while defending the pact rally point. If the inactivity timer really is only 30 seconds, then I would like to disagree with that rule in defense of trying to inventory.

Most of us do take weekends off, so please don’t be alarmed if we don’t post over the weekend.

We think we’ve found a fix for this issue and it’s currently in the testing phase. If all goes well, it should be out in next Tuesday’s patch.

Thanks to all of you who have been patient with us on this one.

Whenever you get a duplicate (as a gift or whatever), contact Support and see if they can help with an exchange. Sometimes they can, sometimes not.

As inculpatus cedo said, players can choose to add a note (although it doesn’t automatically add their name) or choose to write nothing. That allows for Secret Santas and other anonymous types of gifting, which is in my opinion a good thing. Still, although it’s not a “bug,” maybe it would be better if the default were to include the player’s name and allow for gifters to opt-out instead.

how about the chosen tier 1 about event mighty oouo to kill champion frainn?seriously the chosen already broke when tier 1?

I cannot reproduce an issue here. Could you please answer the following questions?
- Do you have the “Anthology of Villains” item in your inventory as instructed in the hint for the “Frainn” item?
- Have you completed the entire event (not just killed Frainn)? All of the enemies in the area must be defeated for the event to be completed. You must have participation in the event in order for you obtain the “Frainn” Collection item.

You need only report the player in-game, or create a Support Ticket. I’m afraid it is against the rules to Name and Shame on the forums.

Good luck.

Report is impissible beacose this players are under texture =)

There are two ways to /report someone who you cannot select:

  • Add them to your /friends or /block list and use that to /report.
  • Take a screenshot and (your choice) create a support ticket or email exploits@arena.net.

This does the same thing that the more convenient option (target, right-click, /report) does: it starts the investigation.

I’ve been working out a few bugs for the legendary collections, and just wanted to let you all know how things stand. Assuming everything goes as scheduled, when Wintersday turns off (1/12) the following things will be in:

  • Dwarven Spell Trap: if you have collected all of the magics, but it hasn’t “charged” you can double-click it to charge it
  • Temple of Dwayna: there are 2 collectibles for capturing the temple of Dwayna, Malchor’s Notes (Bolt I) and Malchor’s Demise (Twilight I). Defending the temple will also grant these items.
  • Magnification Lens: Defending the “Gates of Arah” will also grant this collectible
  • Any collectible where you need to charge something at a place of power will now give priority to that over charging quartz. This wasn’t really a blocker, but it was pretty annoying.

Here are some things that I’m working on, but didn’t feel comfortable with my changes until I can get someone else to look at them. It has been a few years since I worked on events, so in the spirit of not messing up other people’s work, I’d like to get another set of eyes. There is a chance that can happen soon, and if so we could see these as soon as 1/12, otherwise it will take a little longer:

  • Branded Siege Devourer: it will take me much longer to untangle this event chain and figure out why it is stalling, but what I’d like to do in the mean time is add the drop to the Giant Branded Devourer in Fields of Ruin. Unfortunately, as I was getting that worked out I noticed that event only starts on another event failing. I’m reworking the chain slightly, but I need someone else to double-check and make sure I’m not breaking something else.
  • Hope IV: Risen Crystalline Phial: what I’m trying to do is make the wraith spawn more reliably, and without having to stall the event for a long time. Again, I just need a second set of eyes to make sure I’m not introducing new bugs.

Here are a couple of player questions with answers:

Can you please look at the Dune Soarer? This mob is a rare spawn in Dry Top, and its drop is required for the Kraitkin I collection. I have camped there for a long time (2h+) on multiple occasions next to its spawn point and have yet to encounter it a single time.
I looked into this! It does spawn every time, but not always in the same location. That being the case I’m not going to muck around with it at this time. If this continues to be a problem, or there is more to it I’ll take another look, but at least for the 1/12 release nothing will change.

Although I appreciate you looking into this. What about the numerous other instances in the game which have the same problem? Such as breaking the (almost never appearing) crystal prisons of the Shatterer.
Well, certain things take very little time to figure out and fix (like this issue) and I can squeeze it in between other things I’m working on. The Lyssa temple stuff is an example of a thing that will take me a considerable amount more time to fix, so I can’t just fit it in. The shatterer stuff is a further wrinkle, because anything I do could conflict or interfere with something that someone else is working on, but the crystal thing is getting fixed. I just can’t say for certain when the fix will be out.

QA Testing

This isn’t a bug report… but I have to explain:

It looks like a bug report, couple with a complaint about how how long it takes some bugs to get fixed.

I’m wondering how a high priority quest that people pay gems for that involves mastery points and is super lengthy and annoying has one of the most ridiculous bugs (basically trolls you RIGHT at the end saying HAH! go back to start for no reason and do this most annoying maze again)… goes unfixed for so long?

It’s a reasonable question and the answer isn’t as simple as “well if it costs gems…” Developers look at all sorts of things, primarily:

  • how many people are affected?
  • how badly are they affected? i.e. is it annoying or is it game breaking?
  • is there a work-around?
  • does it have economic implications?
  • do we know why it happens?
  • does the potential fix affect other things?
  • and sure, did people pay gems for access

And so on.

There’s no software in the world without bugs and every company has it’s own process for prioritizing and resolving bugs. Gaming software tends to have more bugs (for the reasons Vayne states among others) and so new content comes out before old bugs get resolved, which means they fall in priority relative to newer problems.

I almost quit this game right there. I should’ve… I anticipate this won’t be the first time I get a brain aneurysm.

Yeah, I hear that. I try not to worry too much about bugs — something happens, I try a different way or do something else for a while. Even so, I’ve run into bugs in this game that drive me nuts.

tl;dr
I’m sorry that this bug blocked your progress and I hope that you can step around the issue the next time, so that it won’t also block your enjoyment. Bugs are, alas, a fact of gaming, though, so as you say: this won’t be the first or the last one.

You make it sound like a hundred views is a lot of views. Yes it’s a known bug. However, it’s never happened to me or my wife.

One of the problems with testing is you get a certain amount of time to test everything. So if that doesn’t happen to you, you just play through the scenario.

I mean if a couple of hundred people are testing there’s a chance it doesn’t happen to anyone. Maybe it only happens to 1 in 1000 people or one in 10,000 or one in 100,000. We don’t really know.

Saying that testing should catch something like this is all well and nice, but very often, things that are intermittent or don’t happen often won’t be caught in testing.

This the precisely the type of bug that will often get by testers.

Not to mention when testing software, there are bugs that occur in the live server that never occur on the test server.

How about actively test your game patch before releasing, you know like every other game companies do, no matter the size of the team?

Who’s to say they didn’t? The bug fix for mesmers was to fix a stuck continuum rift when the ability expired naturally. So imagine if you would a QA member makes a mesmer, F5’s, then waits. Ability expires, rift disappears. Retest a few times to confirm the result. Bug marked as fixed.

What you’re asking for is impossible, for any development or QA team with a large project. A specific bug is entered. That specific bug is fixed. That specific fix is tested.

Also I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I don’t buy that it can’t use a party because it is tied to PvP excuse one bit. I can queue for pvp with my party. Parties work in PvP, this is a cop-out and we shouldn’t let them get away with it. Honesty is key, I’d much prefer a “We just don’t want to put resources into this because we feel blah, blah and blah are more important.” over what sounds like something a PR person came up with that means nothing.

To keep things as they are, there should be a note at least in the UI stating that the gift would be sent anonymously by default.

As it stands, it’s like saying, “An email application doesn’t have to say who the message sender is. The sender can put their name in the message body.” Imagine if this applies to text messages…

With regards to character name constraints, I’m sure a toon’s name would fit up there, as well as anyone’s account name.

If it can’t be fixed to be an actual group activity (or they simply dont want to dedicate more resources to fixing it), I would rather they scrap it next year and give us something new we can do in a party.

I think most people only do it now for the achievements, which should never be the primary motivator for players – it just isn’t fun without the ability to go in with friends.

I thought I remembered playing it with a friend before, but figured I was misremembering. All I know is that as it currently stands where party members are not joined in together, it isn’t really that enjoyable and far more difficult to get a group that actually stays for the entire instance.

Lost story ???

lynspottery.6529

It tells you that you may lose progress. However this is slightly bugged. Here is my rather not helpful story about this. If you fly near that camp you trigger the dialogue. Then you lose prompts on what to do next. Then I remember running around trying to figure out what to do and eventually I figured it out… Then I felt dumb because it was rather evident after I figured it out. But I can’t remember what it was that seemed bugged and where you had to go.

Thanks for your insight. However, I was aware of the loss of the progress when I changed up the stories, after all it tells you right there on the page in bold letters.

But, my issue with bugged content is why do we the players have to jump through hoops just to get something to work correctly when it is the responsibility of the developers to make sure it works in the first place?

In many games if you abandon a quest, you can go back and pick it back up again and try again. This usually works in those instances, but it should not be such a frustrating experience for these story lines. But then again, most of those situations are single episodes and not an entire story line of quests.

Kinda begs the question.

I know I have to start this segment over…I am just NOT happy over the poor setup designed into these types of story bugs.

Open Letter to Anet (64-bit client crash)

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: acapela.8215

acapela.8215

The 64-bit client is more reliable for me than the 32-bit client. It crashes perhaps 3-5 times a week, as opposed to 3-5 times a day.

But (and I develop software professionally), a regularly “core-dumping” application is something EVERY development team should consider their HIGHEST priority, in terms of defect mitigation/resolution. Nevertheless, the problem persists…

So, if resolution is not feasible (due to unreliable 3rd-party technology, like Microsoft Windows, or whatever), workarounds to minimize the impact on the user should become the development team’s highest priority. I don’t see any evidence of these workarounds either (?!?), beyond the issue of the 64-bit client (which, granted, has been a major improvement).

I grow unutterably weary of the game crashing, kicking me off a map (like a Dragon Stand map in which I have an hour of my time invested, and which I must for all practical purposes wait another hour to restart in any meaningful way), only to find the map is full when I attempt to reconnect 10-15 seconds later. The recommended expedient, that of being in a party/squad so that we can taxi back to the map, is rarely viable.

I would suggest that Anet implement some sort of “map recovery” capablility. Keep track of which users (in terms of client IPs/accounts/characters) have been connected to each map recently. Hold a population slot open on relevant maps for all such users. If a connection arrives for a recently connected user, deliver them to the same map (to occupy the reserved population slot), restoring them to the state that applied when they crashed. Time out reserved population slots rapidly (30-60 seconds… long enough to allow a crashed user to restart and reconnect, but perhaps not long enough for a user whose system has crashed or whose internet connection has dropped completely, due to reasons beyond Anet’s control).

Something like that.

The fact that nothing like this has been delivered, given the well-known and long-standing issues of unreliability in the GW2 game client, is (IMO) unconscionable.

They could have as MadRabbit says, but they did not. It seems that they are pushing for people to work together in ever larger groups with HoT and the total WvW workover just to provide fodder for their ESport aspirations while putting consideration for smaller groups and solo players on the back burner. While playing in HoT recently, there was a small guild advertising for and offering payment for extra players to come help them with getting a guild hall. For my part when they put some things guild related out of reach that were paid for using cash to gems to guild related purchases, at that point I stopped spending.

DX12 would take a lot of resources (money) to be implemented into GW’s ancient tech.

Since HoT was a failure, there isn’t any money. Buy more gems and maybe they will get to DX12 after hell freezes over.

Go on SW near the training dummies in the starting area and look towards the waypoint, or go to an active boss event like Karak or Frozen Maw, or go to the start of Verdant Brink, and show a print screen with your settings and FPS please.
Because there’s no way you get 60fps there with all maxed at 1080p. All maxed includes Supersample and reflections set to All aswell btw.

Small Guilds, stop complaining about GHls

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MadRabbit.3179

I get it Guild Halls are ridiculously expensive and almost impossible for small guilds to obtain and upgrade.

That was the point from the very start. People knew it was gonna be expensive so why all the complaining?

Guild halls are suppose to be meant mainly for large guilds. Why? Incentive.
Let’s be honest in a large guild, if a person gets kicked not many people are gonna care. If its a higher up or an officer there may be some drama but people get over it. If its someone of the lower ranks the people kicking and many of the other members wouldn’t really care. This is the downside of a large guild who don’t have the emotional/personal incentive of a small guild.

Smaller guilds are a tightly knit unit that have grown strong bonds as they have grown attached to the other members as there only a few so its easy to know everyone and be friends with them. And you could have a fully upgraded guild too if you pulled enough money which was not hard to earn pre-HoT. So why join a large guild when you can be a small guild with your close friends? Benefits from the large guilds.

Large Guilds have numbers and vast amount of resources to back up their large numbers/presence. With the old guild system the incentive of repping and earning influence for large guilds meant 24 hour buffs like exp, karma, harvesting, wvw upgrades, etc. But even small guilds could accomplish this feat pretty easily if they earned enough and farmed things and did events together which they most likely did as they would do everything together.

With the new guild system the only way to keep members from constantly leaving (or at least to constantly recruit to fill those that left) is the guild hall and its various upgrades. So of course large guild will get those upgrades and flesh out their guild hall easier and faster than the small guilds.

If you really want a fully upgraded guild hall and those buffs and stuff, merge into a big guild. If you don’t like them or how they conduct things, leave. Otherwise don’t complain about a system that was clearly intended from the very beginning to benefit to large guilds hold their communities together. Guild Halls are suppose to represent the effort of hundreds of players and their dedication to the guild as a whole.

tl;dr GH meant for large guilds not for small guilds

Only problem is this continue bullkitten, since if they wanted to design it for both types of guilds. They could have.

It could be tied directly into completing guild missions and then scaled so it took 9 months to complete.

But, they didn’t, since their agenda in HoT is less about the enjoyment of their game by their player base, but rather fixing their own broken economy via numerous insane economic dumps that penalize players.

Report via a support ticket or email exploits@arena.net. Provide the details you do have:

  • Time & Date
  • Map instance (via in-game /ip)
  • Location (as specific as you can)

The in-game /report tool just does that automatically, so it’s easier for us to alert ANet. However, the same thing happens afterwards: someone from the appropriate team checks the logs and tries to document whether it’s botting or something else.

tl;dr report however you are able; every bit helps.

Hi

Sorry I know this is a bit of a late reply to this thread but I have read the 4 pages of comments and felt the need to reply.

A of comments on here referring to big guilds as the way forward yet people seem to be completely missing the point, as I believe do anet.

Every big guild once started out as a small guild. If you take away the ability for a small guild to become a big guild, which I am convinced this new system does for all the obvious reasons, then there will be no new big guilds created.

This of course means that as the current big guilds break up and disappear as most guilds do then there will be no new big guilds to take their place. Ultimately this means the death of guilds in gw2 with this new guild system in place.

I must admit I am staggered that anet. 1. Cannot see this obvious conclusion and 2. Implemented this system which in my view goes completely against what gw2 stands for and I might add has made it hugely successful.

You only need to look at what happened to wows sub numbers after they introduced needless grind behind gated content to know what’s in store for gw2 if this system persists in its current form.

Gw2 was about freedom to “play your way”. It needs to get back to what made it successful before it’s too late.
