I also want to add to my previous post that HOM took a lot of time and patience for most of us an I know that some’s patience is starting to dwindle. I know mine is… We just want to know what the hell is going on… we are not asking for an eta, just some info on your progress… something as simple as “hey guys, just fixed [this issue] but I still have to work on [this other issue]” would work…

As above, every single dev and the forum managers should read MooseOfLegend’s reasonable posting.

It is not unreasonable to ask that we be given weekly updates, especially when so many mechanics across the spectrum are just not working.

Devs, a weekly update on what is going on is not unreasonable… If there is an issue/obstacle, tell the community so we don’t go insane in the dark… Staying quiet just causes the community to get angry over time… a refresher every week will help keep us sure that you are working on it and not postponing till forever.

I agree…..Anet is NOT being very open about this at all and that is VERY poor customer service. They screw up BIG TIME and we are suppose to wait patiently and blindly while they decide when it would be convenient for them to fix and relauch HOM, all the while throw Heart of Thorns stuff EVERYWHERE!!!. In the “real world” if you make such a big mess up such as this, you make it a TOP priority to fix it ASAP so you can keep your customers happy. Instead, they only stick only ONE person on this, have us wait 4 months (and who knows how much longer), give us updates whenever it is convenient for them, and at the same time; try to get more money from the customers (the very people they have wronged the the first place by THEIR mistake) by posting “pre-purchase HOT” and giving news articles about HOT. THAT IS JUST NOT RIGHT!

It worries me that ArenaNet supposedly is very close to resolving this, but it has been almost 20 days since the last time they updated us. I really hope they give us some more information soon which is not just repeating that they are close! Why can they not tell us if something has gone wrong, or some unexpected obstacles have appeared? It seems almost certain that something along those lines has happened, since this remains unfixed.

I hope I am not too whiny, and I know they probably have a lot on their hands right now, but this is a very important issue for many people. Postponing a fix until Heart of Thorns just seems unfair.

The point person working on the fix probably has nothing directly to do with HoT; their job is probably writing and running scripts that run on the database, since that is likely a big part of the solution. Writing scripts is usually easy. Testing them, so they don’t do anything unexpected, is usually hard; I’ve seen a lot of programmers get it wrong, even though the scripts were otherwise solid, efficient, and well targeted tools. Usually, the problem was there was an unexpected impact of changing a certain field from X to Y.

So when we got our last word on the topic nearly two weeks ago, they probably had a script that did everything it was supposed to do and were in the process of testing it. The reason it didn’t show up in the most recent scheduled update is that they probably uncovered something during testing. Even if that “something” was completely minor, given that we’ve waited ~4 months already, I’m sure they are erring on the side of caution: much better that we wait longer still than they make the change with any issues whatsoever.

Further, throwing more people on this particular issue isn’t likely to speed things up. It just takes time to identify & resolve issues that are caused by unexpected side-effects of scripts running on the entire player database.

tl;dr I am sure they are moving as fast as is possible (or nearly so) and that HoT isn’t affecting the fix.

I do, however, wish they would give us an update every week, even if it’s nothing more than, “soz, we don’t have an ETA yet.”

I understand that getting the scripts right when trying to fix this is a very difficult task, and as you say, some unexpected programming obstacle has probably occured. However, why do we have to speculate about that? Why can they not be more transparent, and confirm what we are guessing?

I agree that throwing more people at this issue probably would not help the progress towards a fix, and that is not what I am arguing. I simply wish that they could be more open about the whole thing, and show us that this is important to them by updating us regularly whenever something happens which postpones the solution.

Granted, I am not a computer programmer, but I do work in customer service. One cannot argue the fact that this problem isn’t going to go away on it’s own, no matter how much “Heart of Thorns hype” they stick everywhere. The HOM is a key part in linking the lore of GW1 to GW2 and ALOT of people like me worked hard to get all those goodies and now can’t get them because a develper blunder? Yet, in the past 4 months,we have had no update on it’s relaunch or progress other than the generic “soon” or “eventually.” The HOM needs to up, live and soon and WAY before the launch of Heart of Thorns.

Yet, we have been given a lot of information, far more than is normally given. On this issue, there has been very little ‘generic’ and quite a bit of specifics on what is going on. What more do people want? Well obviously miracles and forget about the risks involved.

This part is general and not targeted at an individual: If you think Anet is going to just sweep it under a rug and forget about it, that they would rather throw out hype to distract, and ignore what they’ve promised, then why are you playing the game if you have such a low opinion of the developer?

They were able to fix the bug that allowed the GWAMM to be given to non gw1 players within a few hours. It’s taking the titles & AP that were given to those same players that is the hard part. Also, just imagine you played gw1; got all 50 HoM points then HoM is reopened but alas, you have no credibility to it. You cannot access it at all because you were accidentally considered one of those people who were unfortunately bugged & given the AP & titles. That is also what the Anet person working on this is trying to keep from happening once the fix goes live.

There is a big misunderstanding here. The bug has been fixed within a day or so.

We are not waiting for a bug fix, we are waiting for the solution to remove the rewards from people who earned them during the period when the bug was live.
The two things are quite different. Fixing the bug was probably simple, while devising a plan to remove titles, achievement points, HoM rewards from people who have gotten it because of the bug but not from people who have gotten them properly is definitely more difficult.
They cannot make mistakes there, imagine the uproar if they remove these from someone who has actually earned the rewards.

I have also heard that they were suppose to fix this soon or “eventually”…..
I am not sure that the Dev. team realize how much of a BIG DEAL this is to Veteran players of GW1. It’s like saying “screw you” to all of us who really worked REALLY hard to get all those goodies in the HOM. I am under the impression that the “HOT hype” has taken over which I think is a TOTAL INJUSTICE to those who have been faithful to the game since GW1.
I wonder of ANET realizes that if it wasn’t for the loyal GW1 players, there would not even BE a GW2 , much less the HOT expansion.

This. I feel like HoT is taking way too much of Anets resources based on how they talk about it. They’re forgetting more and more about the current game, SW is bugged, class mechanics still need work (I know they said they’ll be working on this), WvW/EotM is veeery bugged. We can wait for HoT if it means we can have a better experience while we wait.

While I agree they made bad decision about these changes I think you were a bit rude on your statement. I believe there are even several new players that doesn’t even know what WoW is about. Yes, there are players who could need help figuring out that things even though they were pretty obvious for the most. It’s just that the way which Anet has chosen to help them was a bad one, there could be better ways for how this NPE could have been implemented as all these pages has showed. There are people from all levels out there, since from basic or very unexperienced (“noob” as some would call it) to hardcore or experienced players who would learn stuff in a eye blink. Someone having difficult learning things doesn’t mean the game isn’t for them, but then it’s what a well-designed tutorial (current NPE is miles away from that) is for if they intend to attract these type of players. Let’s try to keep it not offensive to any group of players.

Though he is right about the NPE doing exactly what GW2 throughout its entire history has strived not to do. Examples being the whole “I swing a sword! I swing a sword again! And again!” thing, “You shouldn’t have to get to max level to have fun,” among others.

I understand and agree with the idea of spreading things out so new players can encounter them gradually and without being overwhelmed. I also agree with the idea of pacing new abilities and skills to add to the sense of progression and accomplishment as new characters level up. I think the NPE does a good job of that.

I do think the NPE could use another pass, however, to ensure that the order in which things — especially interface elements — are unlocked better matches the order in which players will need or encounter them.

Do that, and the NPE will finally earn my official thumbs-up.

The problem is that the NPE does this without any regard to whether the player actually is “overwhelmed and confused” or not. Not to mention the fact that several things are actually more confusing now than they were before (such as the "Why can’t I use skill poins/vistas questions, that somehow “I finally found a staff! OMG now I have 5 weapons skills I never used before! I don’t know what to do!” is somehow less confusing that people unlocking weapon skills as they go, and the other threads that shadow keeps mentioning in here) and that the NPE actually interferes with people trying to help out new players (such as people trying to teach friends about skill points/vistas without realizing that the new player can’t see or use them).

Pre-NPE the game did just that: while admittedly a few things could have been explained better coughcombofieldscough, it at the same time gave players credit for figuring out the game on their own.

Also giving me a “reward” consisting of something that I could have done 10 levels earlier pre-NPE, or even worse, at the beginning of the game is very… unrewarding. There’s a difference between “Congratulations! You are now level X! Have you checked out Y yet, it’s awesome!” and “Congratulations! You are now level X! We’ve arbitrarily decided that players aren’t experienced enough to learn about Y until level X, so you can now do Y!”

People also tend to be put off by ANet’s attitude of “pretending that this thread doesn’t exist, so that everyone will just give up and go away” that they’ve shown ever since this thread was created.

New Possibilities for Everyone

My advice is to get every single skill point you can while leveling, because the more you get, the faster you can unlock everything.

This is very good advice, and what I’m doing now with my new Norn Mesmer (my fifth Mesmer; I have four of each of the other professions), who I ginned up with one of my new HoT slots, since I already had four empty slots set aside for Revenants for quite a while.

Having already taken 27 characters to level 80 under the original system from launch (and loved leveling every single one of them), I found last year’s combination of trait revamp and NPE able to take all the fun completely out of the process for me.

Despite my distaste for last year’s changes, I still did my best to give that system a fair go, and still have three characters I started last year sitting in their 30s. That was where they tended to peter out under that interim system, and where I just couldn’t push myself to continue.

They are still on hiatus, this time because the recent transition assigned all of them utilities and traits I didn’t want, left me no unspent points to compensate, and fixing that is going to take a lot of extra effort.

I eventually will take all of them to 80, because I do like the characters, but wanted a fresh start to evaluate the current state of affairs, hence the new Mesmer.

NPE: The Good

My new Norn Mesmer is now level 27, and on the way up, I’ve gotten a good look at the NPE process for new players. While my previous criticism still stands, I do think it’s important to acknowledge what’s good about the NPE, which happens to be a lot.

The NPE gives level-appropriate advice and rewards every step of the way, and lets players know what to expect from future levels. By combining the rewards and tutorial messages, the NPE makes it less likely new players will skip important information, and mixes the sugar with the medicine, so to speak.

To the extent the NPE does that smoothly and without causing confusion, which it does most of the time, I think it’s excellent.

NPE: The Bad

My only remaining complaint about the NPE is that the order in which some key elements of the interface, such as map icons, and other game mechanics are unlocked, doesn’t always occur in a manner consistent with when players will need or encounter them. Information new players need is, in some cases, held back in such a way that it ends up causing more confusion than clarity.

So. Since the trait system has been reworked along with the way utilities are unlocked… which turns out to be an even more gated system than before. What do people think about that now.

I’m not very much for this “unlock all other skills of the same type instead of hand picking the ones you actually want” and feel it’s another step in the wrong direction. But I have no clue how it actually plays out. Also there’s traits you need to pick with the same linear system which make your point allocation rather limited and well linear.( no matter that it’s displayes as a circle)

While it probably doesn’t matter on the long tun as you will unlock everything anyway. I’m not looking forward to leveling through a system that doesn’t at all let me progress naturally through the world of Tyria.

Then again the NPE was turning the game from “almost sandboxy” to jump through these hoops to unlock basic functionalities" and now they made even bigger hoops. (I guess that’s why the unlock system is displayed circular)

Ofcourse it probably works. But that feeling of a living and breathing world they were advertising is hidden more and more by the UI of levelling up “rewards”, skillwindows and taking away immersive and sort of realistic interactions with the world.

Tyria is more and more a game and less and less a living world with a soul.

Dear Moderator!

Please don’t merge TOTALLY UNRELATED threads together!

Whats the point in merging several postings regarding people unable to leave (thus “being stuck”) a PvP map and people not being able to progress (thus, “being stuck”) in the “Victory or Death” personal story step into a thread regarding Map-Art and Terrain issues!?!?

Those things have absolutely nothing to do with what this thread here is about.

It would be nice if you either restore those threads or merge them with appropiate threads:

I’m really hopeful this gets fixed soon. I don’t know if it’s intentional or not, or if it’s only affecting certain people—I can’t imagine it being intentional, as the ‘auto hover’ doesn’t even seem to work reliably. It makes setting specific prices nearly impossible. Before, you could click to select the currency input box you wanted to easily type in a price, but this doesn’t work at all anymore. As others mentioned, clicking instead adjusts the value.

Are other people still experiencing this? I haven’t seen any other descriptions of the issue other than in this thread.

Also i’ve just noticed the little typo (hidden easter egg?) in Lauren’s comment about the Gods Walking Amongs Mere Morals. Wow.

Nothing was broken before but it is now. Leveling is horrible since NPE.
So why not just use to old leveling system but keep the rewards?
This way everyone would be happy.

Because that would actually make sense, which is just too overwhelming and confusing *wink*wink*nudge*nudge* for ANet.

Why this seems to be a common plague amongst MMO developers (SOE and Bioware also come to mind) is beyond me.

Hey guys!

No release date yet, but it looks REALLY promising right now. Not for next release though, I don’t want to get your hopes up and dash them on tuesday.

FWIW the programmer doing the fix is extremely meticulous and wants this to be 10000% right when it goes out. It is not an easy fix and it has been being worked on since it broke.

If we can all be patient just a little bit longer then we will have more Gods Walking Amongs Mere Morals in the future… but sadly one of them won’t be me.

So a couple of conclusions we can take from this update:
1 - For those wondering, the fix probably won’t come out for about another month. Since we’ve been told they will only release the fix in a scheduled patch, and since Miss Lauren has told us it won’t go live next Tuesday, maybe by the end of July (best scenario). Just speculating on what’s been told…
2 - Like someone else suspected, in a different thread about this issue, we now have confirmation that only 1 programmer has been assigned to deal with this fix and that, probably, he’s been bashing his head against this issue, for 3 months now, with little to no help.

My question is as follows: Why has ANet assigned so few resources towards fixing this situation? Since HoM is a big part of GW2 (because it rewards players with exclusive skins, pets and minis) and since it’s a critical link between the only 2 MMO’s ANet has ever made, why is 1 guy enough? Everyone tells us that it isn’t an easy fix, that it’s really risky and that it’s a programming nightmare, still they assign this to 1 programmer (No offense intented, towards him. I’m sure, whoever was put in charge of this fix is a very talented programmer. Keep up the good work lad! ).

Go figure out corporate priorities… Sigh… Anyhow, thanks for the update.

To be honest, if they wanted to lie about it, they could have done so weeks ago. Enable the HoM and say they fixed it.

If they were going to lie why would they lie like that? A much better lie would be too say they were close to finishing it and then just not release the fix for over a month because it would get people off there backs. btw, they said they were close, seriously. to the fix about 33 days ago

I suppose you’ve never done something and thought you were close to being finished, then discovered you only just started? Things happen, and there were responses after that one that you are referring to, I’ve given links to 2 of them before Lauren responded.

Personal Story Restoration update

Having now played through the solo instance of Victory or Death here’s my thoughts for what it’s worth

> I miss the champ bags and the little bit of loot you get from the chests. Had hoped to get something for finishing the instance, but you don’t. I know that the mobs won’t drop loot due to it being a story instance now, but it would have been nice to at least leave the dungeon chest spawns in there so you get something along the way. (or give players 3 champ bags plus a couple “bags of loot” at the end after you kill Zhaitan)

> Overall, the Kill Zhaitan mission feels shorter with a lot less standing around.
> The giants were a bit of a pain on my elementalist, but doable.
> The two dragon fight gets really bad when you’re by yourself if you die or are really squishy as I was on my ele. It felt very overwhelming at times and was hard to get back to having things dead so I could operate the canon at the dragons. Tough, but still doable solo.

> I like that you get the arah headpiece for the mission after arah story, and the other loot for finishing personal story is appropriate and nice to get. Though I don’t have much use for lvl 17 anythings, it’s nice you can salvage what you get.
